  • How does ruby's rb_raise stop the execution of the c function calling it?

    - by Adrian
If you write a ruby method as a function in C that uses rb_raise, the part of the function after the call will not get excecuted and the program will stop and you will think that rb_raise used exit(). But if you rescue the exception in ruby, like: begin method_that_raises_an_exception rescue end puts 'You wil still get here.' The ruby code will go on, but your function will stop excecuting. How does rb_raise make this happen?

  • What are the most active Ruby forums/blogs on the web?

    - by MOZILLA
I have just spent 2 days with Ruby, and my observation in last two days is that it is very difficult (as compared to say .NET/Java) to find an active forum/blogs which are helpful for Ruby (or maybe I don't know them since I am new). Which are the most common forums/blogs developers visit when they need help with Ruby (other than Stack Overflow)?

  • What's the best way to mix Ruby and other languages? (Especially C++)

    - by Andy
Hi, I'm learning Ruby, and I'm starting to play with building extensions in C. I have Programming Ruby The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide and so I can follow that for the basic nuts and bolts. What I was wondering is if there already existed some nifty frameworks/whatever to help interoperability between Ruby and other languages, with C++ being the most important for me. I've tried googling, but the results focus on language comparisons, rather than language interoperability. TIA, Andy

  • Why isn't my Ruby object deleted when the last reference goes out of scope?

    - by Andrew Clegg
Hi gurus, I've found a weird effect when trying to track down a memory leak in a Rails app. Can anyone explain what's going on here? Save this script as a plain Ruby script (Rails not necessary): class Fnord def to_s 'fnord' end end def test f = Fnord.new end test GC.start sleep 2 ObjectSpace.each_object do |o| puts o if o.is_a? Fnord end When I run this via ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i486-linux] I get the following: bash $ ruby var_test fnord Although the variable f is out of scope, there are no other references to the single Fnord object, and I've garbage collected, the object still seems to exist. Is this a nefarious memory leak of some sort, or am I completely missing something about Ruby? Further, if I change the test method to this: def test f = Fnord.new f = nil end I get no output. But surely this should not change the semantics here? Many thanks!

  • How do you pipe output from a Ruby script to 'head' without getting a broken pipe error

    - by dan
I have a simple Ruby script that looks like this require 'csv' while line = STDIN.gets array = CSV.parse_line(line) puts array[2] end But when I try using this script in a Unix pipeline like this, I get 10 lines of output, followed by an error: ruby lib/myscript.rb < data.csv | head 12080450 12080451 12080517 12081046 12081048 12081050 12081051 12081052 12081054 lib/myscript.rb:4:in `write': Broken pipe - <STDOUT> (Errno::EPIPE) Is there a way to write the Ruby script in a way that prevents the broken pipe exception from being raised?

  • Using Ruby on Rails, can a polymorphic database be created in a few steps (with polymorphic associat

    - by Jian Lin
I thought it could be created in a few steps but it can't yet: rails poly cd poly ruby script/generate scaffold animal name:string obj_type:string obj_id:integer rake:migrate ruby script/generate scaffold human name:string passportNumber:string rake:migrate ruby script/generate scaffold dog name:string registrationNumber:string rake:migrate and now change app/models/animal.rb to: class Animal < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :obj, :polymorphic => true end and run ruby script/server and go to http://localhost:3000 I thought on the server then if I create an Michael, Human, J123456 and then Woofie, Dog, L23456 then the database will have entries in the Dogs table and "Humen" or "Humans" table as well as in the Animals table? But only the Animals table has records, Dogs and "Humen" do not for some reason. Is there some steps missing?

  • Is ASP.net MVC a direct copy of Ruby on Rails concepts?

    - by Greg
Hi, I'm been developing Ruby on Rails previously. I'm now looking at an ASP.net web app and I'm looking at WebForms and MVC. As I look at MVC it feels as if I'm looking at the result of something a Ruby on Rails developer implemented after being forced to work in MS land. So I'm wondering: Was MVC more or less taken directly from Ruby on Rails and it's concepts? (either intentionally or unintentionally)

  • void foo(int &x) -> Ruby? Passing integers by reference?

    - by Earlz
Hello, as a way to spice up my C++ programming homework, I've decided to instead of typing the C++ from the book onto my computer, instead reforming it in Ruby. Yes it's a bit silly, but I'm bored. Anyway, I'm having trouble converting this kind of function to Ruby void swap(int &a,int &b){ int c=b; b=a; a=c } What would the equivalent ruby code looking inside a function ?

  • Can I use RVM to maintain a single version of Ruby for all users?

    - by Trevor Burnham
I love RVM. I realize that the main use case for it is letting different users switch between different versions of Ruby. But let's say I'm deploying a Rails app to a server and I just want a single version of Ruby running. In particular, I want 1.9.2, which is a breeze to install with RVM but a pain without it. Is there a way that I can say "I want this to be the canonical Ruby installation for all users" (along with all of its gems) without having to create a bunch of symlinks by hand and change them every time I update to a newer Ruby release?

  • Does Ruby have a special stack for returning a value?

    - by prosseek
The following Ruby code def a(b,c) b+c end is the same as follows with Python def a(b,c): return b+c It looks like that ruby has the special stack that stores the final evaluation result and returns the value when a function is called. If so, what's the name of the stack, and how can I get that stack? If not, how does the Ruby code work without returning something?

  • Is there anything like Zope Page Templates for Ruby on Rails?

    - by dan
I have a Ruby on Rails app that I built myself, but which needs a redesign by a professional designer. I know most designers just give you Photoshop mockups and slices, but I would like to hire someone to implement the design as well, which means rewriting the css style sheets and the erb and haml templates. The problem is that I want someone else to implement the redesign without exposing my business logic code to the redesign implementer. Also, I wish there was a way to allow a designer to implement a redesign on a Ruby on Rails site without having to know anything about Ruby on Rails. Are either of these scenarios possible using any combination of software tools? I guess I'm looking for something like Zope Page Templates, but for Ruby on Rails. http://quintagroup.com/cms/zpthttp://quintagroup.com/cms/zpt

  • Convert Markdown text to RTF, using Ruby and Pandoc?

    - by niteshade
    Playing with Ruby and Ruby-Pandoc. Seems like a nice tool, if I can get it to work. I'd like to convert some Markdown text (with embedded lists and other fanciness) to Rich Text. Here's the text I'm converting: Title === This is a paragraph. Hallelujah. Here comes a nested list. --- * List item 1 * List item 1.1 * List item 1.2 * List item 2 * List item 2.1 Here's my Ruby code... require 'pandoc-ruby' input = File.read(test.md) converter = PandocRuby.new(input, from: :markdown, to: :rtf) puts converter.convert ... which (after saving the output to a file) produces a document without anything but a title: Here's the code of the RTF file: {\pard \ql \f0 \sa180 \li0 \fi0 \b \fs36 Title\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa180 \li0 \fi0 This is a paragraph. Hallelujah.\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa180 \li0 \fi0 \b \fs32 Here comes a nested list.\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 1\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 1.1\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 1.2\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 2\par} {\pard \ql \f0 \sa0 \li360 \fi-360 \bullet \tx360\tab List item 2.1\sa180\par} In addition, even if it did show up in my RTF viewer (Mac TextEdit), the RTF code seems to have lost all list nesting. I don't know how to diagnose this, whether I have not stated necessary header information or something in Ruby-Pandoc. Thanks in advance!

  • Getting Rails Application Running Under IronRuby Rack

    - by NotMyself
Anyone else playing with ironruby? I have successfully got the IronRuby.Rails.Example project running on my local machine under IIS 5.1. I am now attempting to get my own demo rails site running in the same way. My web.config is slightly different from the example project. I am attempting to only use what was distributed with IronRuby 1.0 and what I have installed using gems. I am getting the following error which doesn't give me a lot to go on: D:/demo/config/boot.rb:66:in `exit': exit (SystemExit) After trying many different things, I think it is having a problem finding gems. • A good example project to 'prove' my skills [closed]

    - by David Archer
I've been a commercial programmer for about 3 years now but all of my commercial work is based upon PHP (with Cake PHP, Wordpress and Wildfire) and ASP.Net (on C#, including MVC 3, Umbraco and Kentico) as well as plenty of HTML/CSS/jQuery examples to show. A future employer has asked me to show my Ruby on Rails potential. I've done Ruby on Rails before for fun, but nothing worthy of commercial showing. What I'd like to know, from a group of programmers, is what would be a good 'portfolio demo' piece for you? What have you seen in the past that impressed you? What are you looking for? For Ruby lead developers specifically, what sort of things are you looking to see in the code? Cheers!

ERROR: Error installing guard: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 extconf.rb /usr/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require': cannot load such file -- mkmf (LoadError) from /usr/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/custom_require.rb:36:in `require' from extconf.rb:4:in `<main>' Gem files will remain installed in /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/ffi-1.9.3 for inspection. Results logged to /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/ffi-1.9.3/ext/ffi_c/gem_make.out Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks for any help.

  • Cannot install passenger with Nginx

    - by Luc
Hello, I have a rack application that I want to migrate from Ruby 1.8.7 + Apache + passenger to Ruby 1.9.1 + Nginx + passenger. I have made up the following script for a quick install all in one, and it raises an error... Here is the installation script: (basic one with all the steps I need to install everything on a Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx fresh box) Nginx sources cd /tmp wget http://nginx.org/download/nginx-0.7.66.tar.gz tar xzf nginx-0.7.66.tar.gz cd nginx-0.7.66 openssl required for SSL/TLS sudo apt-get install openssl sudo apt-get install libssl-dev Compilation stuff sudo apt-get zlib1g-dev Ruby interpreter 1.9.1 sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.1 ruby1.9.1-dev rubygems1.9.1 irb1.9.1 ri1.9.1 rdoc1.9.1 build-essential nginx libopenssl-ruby1.9.1 Make sure default ruby uses version 1.9.1 sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/ruby ruby /usr/bin/ruby1.9.1 400 --slave /usr/share/man/man1/ruby.1.gz ruby.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/ruby1.9.1.1.gz --slave /usr/bin/ri ri /usr/bin/ri1.9.1 --slave /usr/bin/irb irb /usr/bin/irb1.9.1 --slave /usr/bin/rdoc rdoc /usr/bin/rdoc1.9.1 sudo update-alternatives --config ruby Passenger (rake-0.8.7, fastthread-1.0.7, rack-1.1.0, passenger-2.2.14) sudo gem install passenger Activate Passenger in nginx, select option 2 to use nginx sources donwloaded above cd /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/bin sudo ./passenger-install-nginx-module And this is the error message I got: /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/ext/nginx/ContentHandler.c gcc -c -pipe -O -W -Wall -Wpointer-arith -Wno-unused-parameter -Wunused-function -Wunused-variable -Wunused-value -Werror -g -I src/core -I src/event -I src/event/modules -I src/os/unix -I /tmp/pcre-8.00 -I objs -I src/http -I src/http/modules -I src/mail \ -o objs/addon/nginx/StaticContentHandler.o \ /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/ext/nginx/StaticContentHandler.c /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/ext/nginx/StaticContentHandler.c: In function ‘passenger_static_content_handler’: /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/ext/nginx/StaticContentHandler.c:71: error: ‘ngx_http_request_t’ has no member named ‘zero_in_uri’ make[1]: *** [objs/addon/nginx/StaticContentHandler.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/nginx-0.7.66' make: *** [build] Error 2 -------------------------------------------- It looks like something went wrong Please read our Users guide for troubleshooting tips: /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/doc/Users guide Nginx.html I do not understand the reason of this error. Is this a compatibility problem ? Hope you have any clues :) Thanks a lot, Luc

  • A Reusable Builder Class for Ruby Testing

    - by Liam McLennan
My last post was about a class for building test data objects in C#. This post describes the same tool, but implemented in Ruby. The C# version was written first but I originally came up with the solution in my head using Ruby, and then I translated it to C#. The Ruby version was easier to write and is easier to use thanks to Ruby’s dynamic nature making generics unnecessary.  Here are my example domain classes: class Person attr_accessor :name, :age def initialize(name, age) @name = name @age = age end end class Property attr_accessor :street, :manager def initialize(street, manager) @street = street @manager = manager end end and the test class showing what the builder does: class Test_Builder < Test::Unit::TestCase def setup @build = Builder.new @build.configure({ Property => lambda { Property.new '127 Creek St', @build.a(Person) }, Person => lambda { Person.new 'Liam', 26 } }) end def test_create assert_not_nil @build end def test_can_get_a_person @person = @build.a(Person) assert_not_nil @person assert_equal 'Liam', @person.name assert_equal 26, @person.age end def test_can_get_a_modified_person @person = @build.a Person do |person| person.age = 999 end assert_not_nil @person assert_equal 'Liam', @person.name assert_equal 999, @person.age end def test_can_get_a_different_type_that_depends_on_a_type_that_has_not_been_configured_yet @my_place = @build.a(Property) assert_not_nil @my_place assert_equal '127 Creek St', @my_place.street assert_equal @build.a(Person).name, @my_place.manager.name end end Finally, the implementation of Builder: class Builder # defaults is a hash of Class => creation lambda def configure defaults @defaults = defaults end def a(klass) temp = @defaults[klass].call() yield temp if block_given? temp end end

  • (PHP vs Python vs Perl) vs Ruby [closed]

    - by Dr.Kameleon
OK, here's what : I've programmed in over 20 different languages and now, because of a large project I'm currently working on for Mac OS X (in Objective-C/Cocoa), I need to make a final decision on which language to use for my background scripting + plugin functionality. Definitely, one factor that'll ultimately influence my decision is which one I'm most familiar with, which is PHP (one of the ugliest languages around, which I however adore... lol), then Python / Perl (the "proven values"... )... and then Ruby (which, to me, is almost confusing and I've only played with it for some time.) Now, here's my considerations : (As previously mentioned) Being familiar with it (anyway, if X is better in my case, I really don't mind studying it from scratch...) Speed Good interaction with the Shell + ease of integration with my Cocoa application Btw, some of the reasons that made me wonder if Ruby would be a good choice is : The hype around it (although, I still don't get why; but that's probably just me...) My major competitor (we're actually talking about the same type of software here) is using Ruby for its backend scripting almost exclusively (ok, along with some BASH). Isn't Ruby considered slower e.g. than Perl? Why did he choose that? Simply, a matter of personal taste? So... your thoughts?

  • When to use Bash, when Python/Perl/Ruby? [closed]

    - by futlib
What's your rationale for when to write a Bash script and when to use a more powerful scripting language (Python, Perl, Ruby, ...)? I'm finding that very simple scripts are nicer with Bash, but many of those get quite fancy over time, and it never seems like a good idea to rewrite the whole thing. That's why I'm leaning towards always using Python for all scripting. But since Bash seems to be the the lingua franca of Linux scripting, is that something a responsible system administrator would do?
