• How to count the Chinese word in a file using regex in perl?

  I tried following perl code to count the Chinese word of a file, it seems working but not get the right thing. Any help is greatly appreciated. The Error message is Use of uninitialized value $valid in concatenation (.) or string at word_counting.pl line 21, <FILE> line 21. Total things = 125, valid words = which seems to me the problem is the file format. The "total thing" is 125 that is the string number (125 lines). The strangest part is my console displayed all the individual Chinese words correctly without any problem. • Is There a Better Way to Feed Different Parameters into Functions with If-Statements?

  I've been teaching myself Python for a little while now, and I've never programmed before. I just wrote a basic backup program that writes out the progress of each individual file while it is copying. I wrote a function that determines buffer size so that smaller files are copied with a smaller buffer, and bigger files are copied with a bigger buffer. • How to optimize shopping carts for minimal prices?

  I have a list of items I want to buy. The items are offered by different shops and different prices. The shops have individual delivery costs. I'm looking for an optimal shopping strategy (and a java library supporting it) to purchase all of the items with a minimal total price. Example: Item1 is offered at Shop1 for $100, at Shop2 for $111. Item2 is offered at Shop1 for $90, at Shop2 for $85. Delivery cost of Shop1: $10 if total order < $150; $0 otherwise Delivery cost of Shop2: $5 if total order < $50; $0 otherwise If I buy Item1 and Item2 at Shop1 the total cost is $100 + $90 +$0 = $190. If I buy Item1 and Item2 at Shop2 the total cost is $111 + $85 +$0 = $196. If I buy Item1 at Shop1 and Item2 at Shop2 the total cost is $100 + $10 + $85 + $0 = 195. I get the minimal price if I order Item1 at Shop1 and Item2 at Shop2: $195 Question I need some hints which algorithms may help me to solve optimization problems of this kind for number of items about 100 and number of shops about 20. I already looked at apache-math and its optimization package, but I have no idea what algorithm to look for.

• How to debug JBoss out of memory problem?

  Hello, I am trying to debug a JBoss out of memory problem. When JBoss starts up and runs for a while, it seems to use memory as intended by the startup configuration. However, it seems that when some unknown user action is taken (or the log file grows to a certain size) using the sole web application JBoss is serving up, memory increases dramatically and JBoss freezes. When JBoss freezes, it is difficult to kill the process or do anything because of low memory. When the process is finally killed via a -9 argument and the server is restarted, the log file is very small and only contains outputs from the startup of the newly started process and not any information on why the memory increased so much. This is why it is so hard to debug: server.log does not have information from the killed process. The log is set to grow to 2 GB and the log file for the new process is only about 300 Kb though it grows properly during normal memory circumstances.   Is it possible to calculate multiple aggregates based on differing where clauses? For instance: Let's say I have two tables, one for Invoice and one for InvoiceLineItems. The invoice table has a total field for the invoice total, and each of the invoice line item records in the InvoiceLineItems table contains a field that denotes whether the line item is discountable or not. I want three sum totals, one where Discountable = 0 and one where Discountable = 1 and one where Discountable is irrelevant. Such that my output would be: InvoiceNumber Total DiscountableTotal NonDiscountableTotal ------------- ----- ----------------- -------------------- 1 53.27 27.27 16.00 2 38.94 4.76 34.18 3... • System crashes/lockups + compiz/cairo/gnome-panel crashing due to cached ram, please help?

  Can someone help me to troubleshoot system crashes and lockups which result in compiz/cairo dock and gnome-panel crashing? I also get no window borders after the crash and a lot of kernel memory errors. Logs are telling me that apps were killed due to not enough memory, but the system is caching like 14GB of my ram so I'm a bit stuck on what/how to stop it. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on a 2011 Mac Mini with 16 GB ram. Here's some of the logs that look like they could be causing trouble. I woke up this morning to find chrome/skype/cairo dock and a few others had been killed and here is what the log said. I have a Radeon HD 6600M graphics card using the open source driver, not the proprietary one. I was wondering if perhaps using the proprietary one would solve the problem. Also, while writing this in Chrome rhythmbox and chrome just got killed while typing this, due to out of memory errors or so it reports, though I have 7 GB of free RAM at the time with 7 GB cached as well. • Process.Start() and ShellExecute() fails with URLs on Windows 8

  Since I installed Windows 8 I've noticed that a number of my applications appear to have problems opening URLs. That is when I click on a link inside of a Windows application, either nothing happens or there's an error that occurs. It's happening both to my own applications and a host of Windows applications I'm running. At first I thought this was an issue with my default browser (Chrome) but after switching the default browser to a few others and experimenting a bit I noticed that the errors occur - oddly enough - only when I run an application as an Administrator. I also tried switching to FireFox and Opera as my default browser and saw exactly the same behavior. The scenario for this is a bit bizarre: Running on Windows 8 Call Process.Start() (or ShellExecute() in Win32 API) with a URL or an HTML file Run 'As Administrator' (works fine under non-elevated user account!) or with UAC off A browser other than Internet Explorer is set as your Default Web Browser Talk about a weird scenario: Something that doesn't work when you run as an Administrator which is supposed to have rights to everything on the system! Instead running under an Admin account - either elevated with a User Account Control prompt or even when running as a full Administrator fails. It appears that this problem does not occur for everyone, but when I looked for a solution to this, I saw quite a few posts in relation to this with no clear resolutions. I have three Windows 8 machines running here in the office and all three of them showed this behavior. Lest you think this is just a programmer's problem - this can affect any software running on your system that needs to run under administrative rights. Try it out Now, in order for this next example to fail, any browser but Internet Explorer has to be your default browser and even then it may not fail depending on how you installed your browser. To see if this is a problem create a small Console application and call Process.Start() with a URL in it:namespace Win8ShellBugConsole { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Launching Url..."); Process.Start("http://microsoft.com"); Console.Write("Press any key to continue..."); Console.ReadKey(); Console.WriteLine("\r\n\r\nLaunching image..."); Process.Start(Path.GetFullPath(@"..\..\sailbig.jpg")); Console.Write("Press any key to continue..."); Console.ReadKey(); } } } Compile this code. Then execute the code from Explorer (not from Visual Studio because that may change the permissions). If you simply run the EXE and you're not running as an administrator, you'll see the Web page pop up in the browser as well as the image loading. Now run the same thing with Run As Administrator: Now when you run it you get a nice error when Process.Start() is fired: The same happens if you are running with User Account Control off altogether - ie. you are running as a full admin account. Now if you comment out the URL in the code above and just fire the image display - that works just fine in any user mode. As does opening any other local file type or even starting a new EXE locally (ie. Process.Start("c:\windows\notepad.exe"). All that works, EXCEPT for URLs. The code above uses Process.Start() in .NET but the same happens in Win32 Applications that use the ShellExecute API. In some of my older Fox apps ShellExecute returns an error code of 31 - which is No Shell Association found. What's the Deal? It turns out the problem has to do with the way browsers are registering themselves on Windows. Internet Explorer - being a built-in application in Windows 8 - apparently does this correctly, but other browsers possibly don't or at least didn't at the time I installed them. So even Chrome, which continually updates itself, has a recent version that apparently has this registration issue fixed, I was unable to simply set IE as my default browser then use Chrome to 'Set as Default Browser'. It still didn't work. Neither did using the Set Program Associations dialog which lets you assign what extensions are mapped to by a given application. Each application provides a set of extension/moniker mappings that it supports and this dialog lets you associate them on a system wide basis. This also did not work for Chrome or any of the other browsers at first. However, after repeated retries here eventually I did manage to get FireFox to work, but not any of the others. What Works? Reinstall the Browser In the end I decided on the hard core pull the plug solution: Totally uninstall and re-install Chrome in this case. And lo and behold, after reinstall everything was working fine. Now even removing the association for Chrome, switching to IE as the default browser and then back to Chrome works. But, even though the version of Chrome I was running before uninstalling and reinstalling is the same as I'm running now after the reinstall now it works. Of course I had to find out the hard way, before Richard commented with a note regarding what the issue is with Chrome at least: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=156400 As expected the issue is a registration issue - with keys not being registered at the machine level. Reading this I'm still not sure why this should be a problem - an elevated account still runs under the same user account (ie. I'm still rickstrahl even if I Run As Administrator), so why shouldn't an app be able to read my Current User registry hive? And also that doesn't quite explain why if I register the extensions using Run As Administrator in Chrome when using Set as Default Browser). But in the end it works… Not so fast It's now a couple of days later and still there are some oddball problems although this time they appear to be purely Chrome issues. After the reinstall Chrome seems to pop up properly with ShellExecute() calls both in regular user and Admin mode. However, it now looks like Chrome is actually running two completely separate user profiles for each. For example, when I run Visual Studio in Admin mode and go to View in browser, Chrome complains that it was installed in Admin mode and can't launch (WTF?). Then you retry a few times later and it ends up working. When launched that way some of the plug-ins installed don't show up with the effect that sometimes they're visible sometimes they're not. Also Chrome seems to loose my configuration and Google sign in between sessions now, presumably when switching user modes. Add-ins installed in admin mode don't show up in user mode and vice versa. Ah, this is lovely. Did I mention that I freaking hate UAC precisely because of this kind of bullshit. You can never tell exactly what account your app is running under, and apparently apps also have a hard time trying to put data into the right place that works for both scenarios. And as my recent post on using Windows Live accounts shows it's yet another level of abstraction ontop of the underlying system identity that can cause all sort of small side effect headaches like this. Hopefully, most of you are skirting this issue altogether - having installed more recent versions of your favorite browsers. • Zero downtime deployment (Tomcat), Nginx or HAProxy, behind hardware LB - how to "starve" old server?

  Currently we have the following setup. Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Tomcat on 8080 (TA) Box B running Tomcat on 8080 (TB) TA and TB are running behind LB. For now it's pretty complicated and manual job to take Box A or Box B out of LB to do the zero downtime deployment. I am thinking to do something like this: Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Nginx on 8080 (NA) Box A running Tomcat on 8081 (TA1) Box A running Tomcat on 8082 (TA2) Box B running Nginx on 8080 (NB) Box B running Tomcat on 8081 (TB1) Box B running Tomcat on 8082 (TB2) Basically LB will be directing traffic between NA and NB now. On each of Nginx's we'll have TA1, TA2 and TB1, TB2 configured as upstream servers. Once one of the upstreams's healthcheck page is unresponsive (shutdown) the traffic goes to another one (HttpHealthcheckModule module on Nginx). So the deploy process is simple. Say, TA1 is active with version 0.1 of the app. Healthcheck on TA1 is OK. We start TA2 with Healthcheck on it as ERROR. So Nginx is not talking to it. We deploy app version 0.2 to TA2. Make sure it works. Now, we switch the Healthcheck on TA2 to OK, switch Healthcheck to TA1 to ERROR. Nginx will start serving TA2, and will remove TA1 out of rotation. Done! And now same with the other box. While it sounds all cool and nice, how do we "starve" the Nginx? Say we have pending connections, some users on TA1. If we just turn it off, sessions will break (we have cookie-based sessions). Not good. Any way to starve traffic to one of the upstream servers with Nginx? Thanks!

• jquery performing calculation on dynamically generated elements

  I have a table made up of a row of 3 input elements: Price, Quanity, and Total. Under that, I have two links I can click to dynamically generate another row in the table. All that is working well, but actually calculating a value for the total element is giving me trouble. I know how to calculate the value of the first total element but I'm having trouble extending this functionality when I add a new row to the table. • Javascript auto calculating with (+) and (-)

  I need some help finding the error in my javascript calculation. I need to calculate the sum of my input boxes automatically and have my user be able to edit the calculation using + or - buttons. The code I have already does the calculation automatically if you manually enter the numbers, but pressing the + or - does not change the calculation.   I have several page methods defined in the code behind of an aspx page. I have several JS calls (see example below), one after the other, in the ready() method of JQuery to call these page methods. I noticed the javascript calls run asynchronously but the .NET page methods do not run in parallel. Page method 1 finishes first before page method 2 runs. Is there a way to get all the page methods to run all at the same time? I got the following results though for the different snippets: 1 - 0.022976 2 - 0.003656 3 - -0.196361 4- 0.006563 5- 7.2E-5 6- 0.847695 7- 0.005092 8- 7.6E-5 9- 0.08024 The first numbers represent the snippt and the following the time taken... I've forgotten whatever I learnt back in College on numerical methods :( - how big is 7.2E-5 microseconds?

  I need to read the location of the Temporary ASP.NET Files folder from VBScript as part of a post-installation task in an installer created using a Visual Studio 2008 deployment project. I thought I would do something like this: Set oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") strPath = oShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ASP.NET\2.0.50727.0\Path") and then concatenate strPath with "\Temporary ASP.NET Files" and be done with it. On an x64 system, however, I am getting the value from the WOW6432Node (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ASP.NET\2.0.50727.0), which gives me the 32-bit framework path (C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727), but on an x64 system, I actually want the 64-bit path, i.e. C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727. I understand that this happens because the .vbs file is run using the 32-bit script host due to the parent process (the installer) being 32-bit itself. How can I run the script using the 64-bit script host - or - how can I read the 64-bit values even if the script is run using the 32-bit script host?

  Specifically, I want to have my grails app under development to connect to an Oracle db defiined by an tnsnames.ora file. I have the tnsnames.ora file located in c:\drivers\Network\ on my PC. When I run the grails app via "grails run-war", the db connection string defined in the tnsnames.ora file doesn't seem to be picked up: grails prod run-war -Dserver.port=62215 -Doracle.net.tns_admin=C:\drivers\Netowrk\ It seems the name-value pair of oracle.net.tns_admin is not being passed to the JVM used by the the embedded Tomcat that comes with Grails 1.2.0. If not, what is the proper way of specify it, or pass any JAVA_OPTS to the underlying JVM?

• What is causing the unusual high load average and IOwait?

  I noticed on Tuesday night of last week, the load average went up sharply and it seemed abnormal since the traffic is small. Usually, the numbers usually average around .40 or lower and my server stuff (mysql, php and apache) are optimized. • Why is my Android app camera preview running out of memory on my AVD?

  I have yet to try this on an actual device, but expect similar results. Anyway, long story short, whenever I run my app on the emulator, it crashes due to an out of memory exception. My code really is essentially the same as the camera preview API demo from google, which runs perfectly fine. • What is causing the unusual high load average?

  I noticed on Tuesday night of last week, the load average went up sharply and it seemed abnormal since the traffic is small. Usually, the numbers usually average around .40 or lower and my server stuff (mysql, php and apache) are optimized.   When using the task manager in Windows XP Pro, the amount of RAM that is listed as being used by the individual processes is not adding up to the total memory used (as listed by the total commit on the performance page). The total sum of all the RAM being used the the processes: 195604 K The amount in use as listed by performance page and the status bar: 280028 K 1) Why is this? 2) How do I reduce the amount of memory used?
