• Setting the values of a struct array from JS to GLSL

  I've been trying to make a structure that will contain all the lights of my WebGL app, and I'm having troubles setting up it's values from JS. The structure is as follows: struct Light { vec4 position; vec4 ambient; vec4 diffuse; vec4 specular; vec3 spotDirection; float spotCutOff; float constantAttenuation; float linearAttenuation; float quadraticAttenuation; float spotExponent; float spotLightCosCutOff; }; uniform Light lights[numLights]; After testing LOTS of things I made it work but I'm not happy with the code I wrote: program.uniform.lights = []; program.uniform.lights.push({ position: "", diffuse: "", specular: "", ambient: "", spotDirection: "", spotCutOff: "", constantAttenuation: "", linearAttenuation: "", quadraticAttenuation: "", spotExponent: "", spotLightCosCutOff: "" }); program.uniform.lights[0].position = gl.getUniformLocation(program, "lights[0].position"); program.uniform.lights[0].diffuse = gl.getUniformLocation(program, "lights[0].diffuse"); program.uniform.lights[0].specular = gl.getUniformLocation(program, "lights[0].specular"); program.uniform.lights[0].ambient = gl.getUniformLocation(program, "lights[0].ambient"); ... and so on I'm sorry for making you look at this code, I know it's horrible but I can't find a better way. • Can a candidate be judged by asking to write a complex program on "paper"?

  Sometime back in an interview, I was asked to write following program: In a keypad of a mobile phone, there is a mapping between number and characters. e.g. 0 & 1 corresponds to nothing; 2 corresponds to 'a','b','c'; 3 corresponds to 'd','e','f'; ...; 9 corresponds to 'w','x','y','z'. User should input any number (e.g. 23, 389423, 927348923747293) and I should store all the combinations of these character mapping into some data structure. For example, if user enters "23" then possible character combinations are: ad, ae, af, bd, be, bf, cd, ce, cf or if user enters, "4676972" then it can be, gmpmwpa, gmpmwpb, ..., hnroxrc, ..., iosozrc Interviewer told that people have written code for this within 20-30 mins!! Also he insisted I have to write on paper. If I am writing a code then my tendency is as of I am writing production code, even though it may not be expected from me. So, I always try to think all the aspects like, optimization, readability, maintainability, extensible and so on. Considering all these, I felt that I should be writing on PC and it needs decent 2 hours. Finally after 25 mins, I was able to come up with just the concept and some shattered pieces of code (not to mention of my rejection). My question is not the answer for the above program. I want to know that is this a right way to judge the caliber of a person ? Am I wrong / too slow in the estimates ? Am I too idealistic ?

• How can I pass an external instance to the constructor of an object that's being created using the default XNA XML content loader?

  I'm trying to understand how to use the XNA XML content importer to instantiate non-trivial objects that are more than a collection of basic properties (e.g., a class that inherits from DrawableGameObject or GameObject and requires other things to be passed into its constructor). Is it possible to pass existing external instances (e.g., an instance of the current Game) to the constructor of an object that's being created using the default XNA XML content loader? For example, imagine that I have the following class, inheriting from DrawableGameComponent: public class Character : DrawableGameComponent { public string Name { get; set; } public Character(Game game) : base(game) { } public override void Update(GameTime gameTime) { } public override void Draw(GameTime gameTime) { } } If I had a simple class that did not need other parameters in its constructor (i.e., the Game instance), then I could simply use this XML: <XnaContent> <Asset Type="MyNamespace.Character"> <Name>John Doe</Name> </Asset> </XnaContent> ...and then create an instance of Character using this code: var character = Content.Load<Character>("MyXmlAssetName"); But that won't work because I need to pass the need to pass the Game into the constructor. What's the best way to handle this situation? Is there a way to pass in things like the current Game using the default XNA XML content loader? Do I need to write my own XML loader? (If so, how?) Is there a better object-oriented design that I should be using for my classes? Note: Although I used Game in this example, I'm really just asking how to pass any type of existing instance to my constructors. (For example, I'm using the Farseer Physics Engine, and some of my classes also need a reference to the Farseer World object too.) Thanks in advance.

• I cannot change the grub Default item from OS-1, but I can from OS-2 (dual-boot 10.04 on both)

  My 10.04 system (OS-1) got into a tangle the other day, so I installed a second, dual-boot 10.04 (OS-2), so that I could trouble-shoot the hung system... In case it is relevant to my question, I'll mention that since I got OS-1 working again, it has shown a few battle wounds from its ordeal (.. actually the ordeal was mine ... trying to figure it all out ;) ... I lost some custom settings, but not all. (For the curious: the hangup was caused by rsync writing 600 GB to OS-1's 320 GB drive.. The destination drive was unmounted at the time, and rsync dutifully wrote directly to /media/usb_back; filling it to capacity... I have since, ammended my script :) Because the dual-boot MBR was prepared by OS-2, it is first on the grub list.. However, I want OS-1 to be the default OS to boot... From OS-1, I tried two methods to change the grub-menu's defaule OS. eg. Directly editing /etc/default/grub (then update-grub) Running 'Startup Manager' (then update-grub) Neither of these methods had any effect... so I started OS-2, and tried method 1... It worked! Why can I not change the grub menu from OS-1? .. or if it can be done, How?

• How do I create the "Gnome-Desktop-Item-Edit" program's launch icon with root privileges and more?

  I personally dont prefer running commands in terminal to achieve a task and prefer apps to execute the job. Creating launcher for apps is one such command where I prefer the gnome-desktop-item-edit application for creating launchers. If the gnome package is installed, just searching "create launcher" opens the app. But, it doesnt serve any purpose, because for starters the application cannot create launchers for various apps without root permission and the location where the apps have to be created. Usually the launcher apps with root permission can be created at /usr/share/applications and without root permission at /.local/share/applications. I dont prefer the latter location as it is vulnerable to deletion. Hence, in order to create the launchers through gnome with root, everytime I am forced to open this through terminal using the below command! $ sudo gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/.local/share/applications --create-new I dont want to open terminal everytime I want to create an application launcher on unity! I am able to lock the "Create Launcher" App in the Launcher, but not with root privileges So I want to be able to create the "Create Launcher" app shortcut on unity with default root privileges and for the app to create the launchers at usr/share/applications by default! Please help! P.S. I dont have enough rep points to add screenshots to help with the question!

• "Default approach" when creating a class from scratch: getters for everything, or limited access?

  Until recently I always had getters (and sometimes setters but not always) for all the fields in my class. It was my 'default': very automatic and I never doubted it. However recently some discussions on this site made me realize maybe it's not the best approach. When you create a class, you often don't know exactly how it's going to be used in the future by other classes. So in that sense, it's good to have getters and setter for all of the fields in the class. So other classes could use it in the future any way they want. Allowing this flexibility doesn't require you to over engineer anything, only to provide getters. However some would say it's better to limit the access to a class, and only allow access to certain fields, while other fields stay completely private. What is your 'default' approach when building a class from scratch? Do you make getters for all the fields? Or do you always choose selectively which fields to expose through a getter and which to keep completely private?

• Batch file to wait for other program to load/initialize, then execute command?

  I need some assistance writing what should be a fairly basic .BAT file. I load my main program, but that program takes ~20secs to load and be initialized. I have another command-line API I can execute to interact with this above program, but obviously until the above program is loaded and initialized there's no point in trying. If the program isn't running the command-line API returns a string stating exactly this - otherwise it just works and exits. Easy. So I want to wait until the above is loaded/initialized before firing my API command(s) at it. I could place a sleep/wait in there, but I want something more solid. The ~20sec wait is not necessarily consistent. Any way to execute the command-line API over and over until the response is satisfactory, then exit? J

What I want is run cucumber features and this translate to cucumber features --format pretty I tried to do this editing the config/cucumber.yml file (on a rails project). Edited the line: default: <%= std_opts % features resulting on: default: <%= std_opts % --format pretty features But it make some erros happen: Using the default profile... All but one formatter must use --out, only one can print to each stream (or STDOUT) (RuntimeError) What I can do to make this option "--format pretty" default? Also, is there any other good option to put as default to make result more clear? Thank you.

• Is there a standard practice for storing default application data?

  Our application includes a default set of data. The default data includes coefficients and other factors that are unlikely to ever change but still need to be update-able by the user. Currently, the original default data is stored as a populated class within the application. Data updates are stored to an external XML file. This design allows us to include a "reset" feature to restore the original default data. Our rationale for not storing defaults externally [e.g. XML file] was to minimize the risk of being altered. The overall volume of data doesn't warrant a database. Is there a standard practice for storing "default" application data?

So the 'default' branch in the 'development' clone is always release-ready. Now suppose I'm developer1 working on feature2. And let's say also that feature2 takes several months. It's pretty obvious that I'm going to want to keep my 'feature2' branch up to date with the 'default' branch. Does this make sense? How would I go about doing this with Mercurial?

If I call myfile.open("xpo.dll") I might get an error because I am not passing the [fullpath + name + extension]. The program that is being executed can vary paths depending on the installation path. Therefore, I was wondering if there is a way to get the application path [where the application is located] and set it so that when another program executes from another path everything might work properly...? • What's the proper size of Default png's for iPad?

  I am confused by conflicting information. Most commonly I see these being the sizes quoted for the various Default images: Launch image Portrait Default-Portrait.png 768 x 1004 Launch image Portrait [email protected] 1536 x 2008 Launch image Landscape [email protected] 2048 x 1496 Launch image Landscape Default-Landscape.png 1024 x 748 Seemed like slightly unusual sizes, but I went along with it and dragged the images into the Launch images section in XCode. XCode however promptly puts little yellow triangles over these images and tell me that the sizes should be: 768x1024, 1536x2048, 1024x768 and 2048x1536 Oh and one last important bit. Do I really need to have all these images for submission to the app store? It's really not clear which images are required and which are just recommended. Mine is a Universal app btw if that makes any difference.

• Problem interfacing GSM USB modem to Java application

  I am working on an open-source application called FrontlineSMS which can be interfaced with GSM modems to send and receive SMS. The windows installer that is available through their website works fine. Since i wanted to modify it, I got the source code and built the jar and tried to launch it. When I plug in the GSM modem and launch the application, it sometimes detects the GSM device and i am even able to send and receive SMS. Or else 1.) • How to support 3-byte UTF-8 Characters in ANT

  I am trying to support UTF-8 characters in my ANT script. As long as the character string are made up of 2-byte UTF-8 characters, such as: Lògìñ Ùsèr ÌÐ Then things work fine. When I use Unicode Han Character: ? Which, according to this site: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/6211/index.htm Has a UTF-8 encoding of 0xE6 0x88 0x91 I can see in UltraEdit, my input properties file has the values "E6 88 91" all in a row, so I'm fairly confident that my input is correct. And When I open the same file in Notepad++ I can see all the characters correctly. • Why does my Delphi program's memory continue to grow?

  I am using Delphi 2009 which has the FastMM4 memory manager built into it. My program reads in and processes a large dataset. All memory is freed correctly whenever I clear the dataset or exit the program. It has no memory leaks at all. Using the CurrentMemoryUsage routine given in spenwarr's answer to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/437683/how-to-get-the-memory-used-by-a-delphi-program, I have displayed the memory used by FastMM4 during processing. What seems to be happening is that memory is use is growing after every process and release cycle. e.g.: 1,456 KB used after starting my program with no dataset. 218,455 KB used after loading a large dataset. 71,994 KB after clearing the dataset completely. If I exit at this point (or any point in my example), no memory leaks are reported. 271,905 KB used after loading the same dataset again. 125,443 KB after clearing the dataset completely. 325,519 KB used after loading the same dataset again. 179,059 KB after clearing the dataset completely. 378,752 KB used after loading the same dataset again. It seems that my program's memory use is growing by about 53,400 KB upon each load/clear cycle. Task Manager confirms that this is actually happening. I have heard that FastMM4 does not always release all of the program's memory back to the Operating system when objects are freed so that it can keep some memory around when it needs more. But this continual growing bothers me. Since no memory leaks are reported, I can't identify a problem. Does anyone know why this is happening, if it is bad, and if there is anything I can or should do about it?

  I am trying to experiment with GNUS email in Emacs, in Windows (EDIT: x64 bit). I've got it to work in Ubuntu, but struggling with it in Windows. I have downloaded and unzipped the gnutls-3.0.9-w32-bin package, but am not sure what to do with it. I have tried putting it in Program Files (x86), which is "the same directory as Emacs". I have tried putting it in the emacs-24.3 folder. I consider merging all the folders in between the two, but am hesitant as that seems a difficult troubleshoot attempt compared to my knowledge on these matters. I think Emacs needs to somehow see the gnutls binaries and/or dlls. My knowledge is limited on this. I've also struggled to understand PATHs for sometime now, and am not sure if that approach is relevant here. FYI, the emacs directory contains folders labeled bin, etc, info, leim, lisp and site-lisp. The gnutls directory contains folder labeled bin, include, lib and share. Hmm, now I'm finding lots of links on adding paths. Still, I'm skeptical that I would only add gnutls.exe path, as it seems the dlls are needed. Some additional data for Ramhound's first comment I have been attempting the (require 'gnutls) route. This seems to be the most relevant parts in the log: Opening connection to imap.gmail.com via tls... gnutls.c: [1] (Emacs) GnuTLS library not found Opening TLS connection to `imap.gmail.com'... • Is it possible that a single-threaded program is executed simultaneously on more than one CPU core?

  When I run a single-threaded program that i have written on my quad core Intel i can see in the Windows Task Manager that actually all four cores of my CPU are more or less active. One core is more active than the other three, but there is also activity on those. There's no other program (besided the OS kernel of course) running that would be plausible for that activitiy. And when I close my program all activity an all cores drops down to nearly zero. All is left is a little "noise" on the cores, so I'm pretty sure all the visible activity comes directly or indirectly (like invoking system routines) from my program. Is it possible that the OS or the cores themselves try to balance some code or execution on all four cores, even it's not a multithreaded program? Do you have any links that documents this technique? Some infos to the program: It's a console app written in Qt, the Task Manager states that only one thread is running. Maybe Qt uses threads, but I don't use signals or slots, nor any GUI. If they do, how does this technique work? EDIT Do you know any tools to do a better analysis of single and/or multi-threaded programs than the poor Windows Task Manager?

• How can I get the Name of the Program associated with a file extension using Delphi?

  I need to get the name of the program currently associated with a file extension for the current user. If you right-click on a file and select properties, then what I need is the program name that is to the right of the "Opens with" line. e.g. For ".xls", I want to be able to get the answer "Microsoft Office Excel", or whatever program the user has as their default program to open .xls files. I have determined it's not as easy as just going into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and picking it out, since it may also be specified in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER or HKEY_USERS. Maybe all I need to know is the pecking order used by Windows to determine this and how to get to each of the locations. Of course, a Windows API call to do this would be ideal. This is a similar question to: How to get icon and description from file extension using Delphi? but that question only answered how to get the description of the extension and the icon of the associated program. I couldn't find a way to extend that to also get the name of the associated program.

  Hi, I am trying to add my program run in Windows 7 startup, but it doesn't work. My program has an embedded UAC manifest. My current way is by adding a string value at HKCU..\Run. I found a manual solution for Vista from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/81c3c1f2-0169-493a-8f87-d300ea708ecf Click Start, right click on Computer and choose “Manage”. Click “Task Scheduler” on the left panel. Click “Create Task” on the right panel. Type a name for the task. Check “Run with highest privileges”. Click Actions tab. Click “New…”. Browse to the program in the “Program/script” box. Click OK. On desktop, right click, choose New and click “Shortcut”. In the box type: schtasks.exe /run /tn TaskName where TaskName is the name of task you put in on the basics tab and click next. Type a name for the shortcut and click Finish. Additionally, you need to run the saved scheduled task shortcut to run the program instead of running the application shortcut to ignore the IAC prompt. When startup the system will run the program via the original shortcut. Therefore you need to change the location to run the saved task. Please: Open Regedit. Find the entry of the startup item in Registry. It will be stored in one of the following branches. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Double-click on the correct key, change the path to the saved scheduled task you created. • Pull/Clone a svn repository into hg with new default branch name?

  I'm forking a project's SVN repo and need to integrate into my Mercurial repo. To keep things simple I have a local hgsubversion repo and a local hg repo. However both the mercurial and hgsubversion repo uses default as their default branch name. My goal here is to put the original code and updates on one branch and my code on the default branch However I have yet to be able to do this. Is there any suggestions on how to pull changes from an SVN repo and rename the branch to something else?
