• Excel Plug-In Assembly Loading Problem (Access Denied)

  I am developing an Excel 2003 add-in using Visual Studio 2008. My add-in loads fine; however, it loads plug-ins from other C# DLL's. I would like this to be done dynamically at run time so referencing them during development is something I would rather not do. Anyways, anytime I try to load a DLL from the Excel add-in at start up, it throws a security exception. This particular example is HTML Agility Pack. It's not a plug-in but a plug-in's dependency. • Cache Simulator in C

  Ok this is only my second question, and it's quite a doozy. It's for a school assignment, but no one (including the TAs) seems to be able to help me. It's kind of a tall order but I'm not sure where else to turn. Essentially the assignment was to make a cache simulator. This version is direct mapping and is actually only a small portion of the whole project, but if I can't even get this down I have no chance with other associativities. I'm posting my whole code because I don't want to make any assumptions about where the problem is.   WebForms web site upon first launch from VS2008 throws this exception on my dev machine, after clicking continue everything works. Also, everything works on server when deployed. What is this VJSharpCodeProvider, why is it being loaded in vb.net project and why did it start happening all of a sudden? • Understanding LinkDemand Security on a webserver

  Hi, After deployment an ASP.Net application on a webserver, I get this error message by using code from a external assembly: "LinkDemand The type of the first permission that failed was: System.Security.PermissionSet The Zone of the assembly that failed was: MyComputer the error ". The assembly is include in the \bin folder and not in the GAC. I try to know what linkdemand exactly is and why this message will raised. But looking for more information, I don't get exactly the problem. I try also to add the PermissionSetAttribute on the class where the exception message happens: [System.Security.Permissions.PermissionSetAttribute(System.Security.Permissions.SecurityAction.LinkDemand, Name = "FullTrust")] Then the exception will be raised on another class of the assembly. And so on.. My questions ares: - what exactly is going wrong here? Is it true that I understand that .Net cannot check the code during Jit? - Is there maybe a security policy that block this (machine.config)? - Can I set the PermissionAttribute for all classes between a assembly? • Cookies not present after using XMLHttpRequest

  I'm trying to make a bookmarklet to download videos off of YouTube, but I've come across a little problem. To detect the highest quality video available, I use a sort of brute force method, in which I make requests using the XMLHttpRequest object until a 404 isn't returned (I can't do it until a 200 ok is returned because YouTube redirects to a different server if the video is available, and the cross-domain policy won't allow me to access any of that data). Once a working URL is found, I simply set window.location to the URL and the download should start, right? Wrong. A request is made, but for reasons unknown to me, the cookies are stripped and YouTube returns a 403 access denied. This does not happen if the XML requests aren't made before it, i.e. if I just set the window.location to the URL everything works fine, it's when I do the XMLHttpRequest that the cookies aren't sent. The only downside is I can't automatically detect the highest quality, I just have to try every "fmt" parameter manually until I get it right. So my question is: why is the XMLHttpRequest object removing cookies from subsequent requests? This is the first time I've ever done anything in JS by the way, so please, go easy on me. ;)

• How to fix security exception when using recaptcha on MVC site

  I followed this excellent blog post to implement recaptcha on my MVC site: http://devlicio.us/blogs/derik_whittaker/archive/2008/12/02/using-recaptcha-with-asp-net-mvc.aspx I converted the code to VB, and everything seems to compile ok. However, when the code gets to the place where the recapture is about to be generated, I get a security exception. • DotNetOpenAuth OpenID on ISA 2006 Reverse Proxy problem

  I am trying to host my site that uses DotNetOpenAuth (OpenID) behind ISA 2006 (reverse proxy), and after it authenticated with a provider (such as Google), and it returns with a URL with %253A in the URL. However, ISA HTTP filter rejects the request. What I need to do is, on ISA web publishing rule, right click config HTTP policy properties uncheck "Verify Normalization" and it worked. Is this a problem on ISA 2006 generally? Are other firewalls having similar problems? Or, is it an OpenID or DotNetOpenAuth issue? Is it safe to disable Normalization checking on ISA? According to MSDN, quote "Web servers receive requests that are URL encoded. This means that certain characters may be replaced with a percent sign (%) followed by a particular number. For example, %20 corresponds to a space, so a request for http://myserver/My%20Dir/My%20File.htm is the same as a request for http://myserver/My Dir/My File.htm. Normalization is the process of decoding URL-encoded requests. Because the % can be URL encoded, an attacker can submit a carefully crafted request to a server that is basically double-encoded. If this occurs, Internet Information Services (IIS) may accept a request that it would otherwise reject as not valid. When you select Verify Normalization, the HTTP filter normalizes the URL two times. If the URL after the first normalization is different from the URL after the second normalization, the filter rejects the request. This prevents attacks that rely on double-encoded requests. Note that while we recommend that you use the Verify Normalization function, it may also block legitimate requests that contain a %."

• Allowed unicode characters in IDN host labels

  Hi all, Im currently working on a "proper" URI validator and currently it all comes down to hostname validation, the rest isnt that tricky. Im stuck at IDN hostname labels (e.g. containing unicode; possible punycode encoded strings have been decoded at this point). My first idea was basicly a regex for TLD's not supporting IDN and one for those who do (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/tld-idn-policy-list.html (?)). Respectively; ^[a-zA-Z0-9-]+$ and ^[a-zA-Z0-9-\p{L}]+$ However this is not an ideal situation, since every IDN registrar can decide which characters to allow and which not. What im looking for is a proper, consistent, up2date data table of unicode characters allowed in various TLD's; im getting this idea i have to find all the data myself at russian and chinese registry sites (which is quite difficult). So before spitting down the web.. i wondered is there such a list? Or are there better approaches, best/common practices etc? (I want the validation to be as strict as possible.) For whatever reason the contents of the partial class do not refresh even though i can step through the entire process and see the page being recalled and populated.   I am in the process of implementing the jqGrid and would like to be able to use the sorting functionality. I have run into some issues with sorting columns that are related to the base table. • Adobe AIR non-Administrator application installation/upgrade on Windows

  Is there any way to allow non-Administrator users to install, upgrade or uninstall an Adobe AIR application on Windows? I've made an Adobe AIR application and packaged it as a .air package using the standard AIR mechanism for creating deployment packages. If a normal or Power user tries to install this AIR application, the Application Event Log shows an error saying administrative rights are required. And even if the user elevates during installation, administrative rights are still required for an upgrade using the automated AIR upgrade system (since an upgrade is essentially, behind the scenes, an uninstallation of a .msi package followed by an installation of another .msi package). Is there any way around this? What I've tried so far is: Using the Group Policy editor, setting Windows Installer to elevate during installations. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. Specifying My Documents as the installation directory. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. Giving the user Modify access to the Program Files folder where the application would usually reside. Doesn't work, since this isn't a file permissions issue. Making the user a Power User. Doesn't work, since AIR attempts a "for all users" installation. I'm guessing that both installing and upgrading would work fine for a user if the AIR installer would attempt to make an "only for me" application installation instead of a "for all users" installation, and the user was a Power User, and possibly the application was installed to My Documents I'm also guessing that this problem doesn't exist on OSX and Linux, since they have more intuitive concepts for per-user application installations.

• Producing Mini Dumps for _caught_ SEH exceptions in mixed code DLL

  I'm trying to use code similar to clrdump to create mini dumps in my managed process. This managed process invokes C++/CLI code which invokes some native C++ static lib code, wherein SEH exceptions may be thrown (e.g. the occasional access violation). C# WinForms -> C++/CLI DLL -> Static C++ Lib -> ACCESS VIOLATION Our policy is to produce mini dumps for all SEH exceptions (caught & uncaught) and then translate them to C++ exceptions to be handled by application code. This works for purely native processes just fine; but when the application is a C# application - not so much. The only way I see to produce dumps from SEH exceptions in a C# process is to not catch them - and then, as unhandled exceptions, use the Application.ThreadException handler to create a mini dump. The alternative is to let the CLR translate the SEH exception into a .Net exception and catch it (e.g. System.AccessViolationException) - but that would mean no dump is created, and information is lost (stack trace information in Exception isn't as rich as the mini dump). So how can I handle SEH exceptions by both creating a minidump and translating the exception into a .Net exception so that my application may try to recover?

• How to protect/monitor your site from crawling by malicious user

  Situation: Site with content protected by username/password (not all controlled since they can be trial/test users) a normal search engine can't get at it because of username/password restrictions a malicious user can still login and pass the session cookie to a "wget -r" or something else. The question would be what is the best solution to monitor such activity and respond to it (considering the site policy is no-crawling/scraping allowed) I can think of some options: Set up some traffic monitoring solution to limit the number of requests for a given user/IP. Related to the first point: Automatically block some user-agents (Evil :)) Set up a hidden link that when accessed logs out the user and disables his account. (Presumably this would not be accessed by a normal user since he wouldn't see it to click it, but a bot will crawl all links.) For point 1. do you know of a good already-implemented solution? Any experiences with it? One problem would be that some false positives might show up for very active but human users. For point 3: do you think this is really evil? Or do you see any possible problems with it? Also accepting other suggestions.

  hi all !  In my app i need to download several plist.  to download a plist i use the NSURLconnection  in my code i use an UIAlertView with a UIActivityIndicator then when the download is finished i add a button to the alert to dismiss it.  To download the plist i use somewhere in my code an NSURL set to the adresse where the plist is, next i set a NSURLRequest with the url cache policy and a timeout interval.  Then i set my NSMutableData to the NSURL connection with a NSURLRequest.  In the delegate didReceiveData: i append data to my mutable data object, in the didFailWithError: i handle error. And finaly in the connectionDidFinishLoading  i serialize my data to a plist so i can write to file my plist, and release my alertview.  My problem is : how can i do if i have sevetal file to download because the connectionDidFinishLoading is called each time my NSURLConnection is finished but i want to release my UiAlert when everything is finished. • Dependency injection with web services?

  I've recently discovered a possible candidate for dependency injection in a .Net application I've designed. Due to a recent organizational policy, it is no longer possible to call smtp mail services from client machines on our network. So I'm going to have to refactor all the code in my application where it was previously calling the smtp object to send out mail. I created a new WCF web service on an authorized web server that does allow for smtp mail messaging. This seems to be a great candidate for dependency injection. I will create a new INotification interface that will have a method like 'void SendNotification(MailMessage msg)' and create a new property in my application where you can set this property to any class that implements this interface. My question tho, is whether it's possible, through dependency injection, to encapsulate the instantiation of a .NET WCF web service? I am fairly new at IoC and Dependency injection frameworks, so I am not quite sure if it can handle web service dependencies? I'm hoping someone else out there has come across this situation or has knowledge regarding this subject? cheers, John

  I've been looking into ways to compress PHP libraries, and I've found several libraries which might be useful, but I really don't know much about them. I've specifically been reading about bcompiler and PHAR libraries. Is there any performance benefit in either of these? Are there any "gotchas" I need to watch out for? What are the relative benefits? Do either of them add to/detract from performance? I'm also interested in learning of other libs which might be out there which are not obvious in the documentation? As an aside, does anyone happen to know whether these work more like zip files which just happen to have the code in there, or if they operate more like Python's pre-compiling which actually runs a pseudo-compiler? ======================= EDIT ======================= I've been asked, "What are you trying to accomplish?" Well, I suppose the answer is that this is all hypothetical. It is a combination of these: What if my pet project becomes the most popular web project on earth and I want to distribute it quickly and easily? (hay, a man can dream, right?) • Core data migration failing with "Can't find model for source store" but managedObjectModel for source is present

  I have a cocoa application using core-data, which is now at the 4th version of its managed object model. My managed object model contains abstract entities but so far I have managed to get migration working by creating appropriate mapping models and creating my persistent store using addPersistentStoreWithType:configuration:options:error and with the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption set to YES. NSDictionary *optionsDictionary = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObject:[NSNumber numberWithBool:YES] forKey:NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption]; NSURL *url = [NSURL fileURLWithPath: [applicationSupportFolder stringByAppendingPathComponent: @"MyApp.xml"]]; NSError *error=nil; [theCoordinator addPersistentStoreWithType:NSXMLStoreType configuration:nil URL:url options:optionsDictionary error:&error] This works fine when I migrate from model version 3 to 4, which is a migration that involves adding attributes to several entities. Now when I try to add a new model version (version 5), the call to addPersistentStoreWithType returns nil and the error remains empty. The migration from 4 to 5 involves adding a single attribute. I am struggling to debug the problem and have checked all the following; The source database is in fact at version 4 and the persistentStoreCoordinator's managed object model is at version 5. The 4-5 mapping model as well as managed object models for versions 4 and 5 are present in the resources folder of my built application. I've tried various model upgrade paths. Strangely I find that upgrading from an early version 3 - 5 works .. but upgrading from 4 - 5 fails. I've tried adding a custom entity migration policy for migration of the entity whose attributes are changing ... in this case I overrode the method beginEntityMapping:manager:error: . Interestingly this method does get called when migration works (ie when I migrate from 3 to 4, or from 3 to 5 ), but it does not get called in the case that fails ( 4 to 5 ). I'm pretty much at a loss as to where to proceed. Any ideas to help debug this problem would be much appreciated.

• Runtime Exception when using Custom Healthmonitoring event in medium trust

  Hi, I'm using custom healthmonitoring events in ASP.NET We recently moved to a new server with default High Trust Permissions. Literature says that healthmonitoring and custom events should work under Medium or higher trust (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb398933.aspx). Problem is it doesn't. In less than high trust I get a SecurityException saying The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy It works in Full trust or when I remove the inheritance of System.Web.Management.WebErrorEvent. Any suggestions anyone?
