  While there is a similar question focused on Java, I've been in debates with utilizing Task objects. What's the best way to handle returns on CRUD methods (and similar)? Common returns we've seen over the years are: Void (no return unless there is an exception) Boolean (True on Success, False on Failure, exception on unhandled failure) Int or GUID (Return the newly created objects Id, 0 or null on failure, exception on unhandled failure) The updated Object (exception on failure) Result Object (Object that houses the manipulated object's ID, Boolean or status field to with success or failure indicated, Exception information if there was one, etc) The concern comes into play as we've started moving over to utilizing C# 5's Async functionality, and this brought the question up of how we should handle CRUD returns large-scale. In our systems we have a little of everything in regards to what we return, we want to make these returns standardized... Now the question is what is the recommended standard? Is there even a recommended standard yet? (I realize we need to decide our standard, but typically we do so by looking at best practices, see if it makes sense for us and go from there, but here we're not finding much to work with)

• Google Bot trying to access my web app's sitemap

  Interesting find today...   I was perusing the event log on our web server today for any unexpected ASP.NET exceptions/errors. Found the following:   Exception information: Exception type: HttpException Exception message: Path '/builder/builder.sitemap' is forbidden. Request information: Request URL: https://www.bondwave.com:443/builder/builder.sitemap Request path: /builder/builder.sitemap User host address: 66.249.71.247 User: Is authenticated: False Authentication Type: Thread account name: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE   At first I thought this was maybe an attempt by a hacker to mess with the sitemap. Using a handy web site (www.network-tools.com) I did a lookup on the IP address and found it was a Google bot trying to crawl the application. In this case, I would expect an exception or 403 since the site requires authentication anyway.

• Understanding exceptional cases

  I've been studying the use of exceptions in various php projects (such as Doctrine and Zend Framework). Exceptions seem to be thrown when unordinary input/state occurs. A perfect example is Doctrine throwing an exception when you try to use a invalid query string. I think the creators of the doctrine api understood that first, you can't query data by using an invalid DQL statement, and a developer should immediately be warned that an error has occurred, rather then letting execution continue with the possibility of an error code going un-checked. I also bet that this simplifies reading the code. I can't think of a situation where you would want to use an invalid DQL statement, except unit testing. Since this is true, it's better to avoid plaguing a bunch of code with null/error checks and use exceptions. I've read in books that exceptions shouldn't be thrown when validating dating user input. I've seen examples where of where the guideline is broken. One example is the Zend framework. If supplying an invalid controller or action name, an exception is thrown. Unlike doctrine, the user has more direct control over this sort of input. I know you can configure an error controller and set up a 404 message or what have you, but I'm curious why they have used an exception in this scenario? I guess you can argue the Zend Framework does not know how to continue processing the quest. One last example Is I wrote a function to return some html based on a given resource type. This resource type is hard-coded and sent when a user interacts with a web site (such as clicking a button to display the form to input data). I don't expect users to be mucking around with the request type. Under normal operating conditions, the resource type should be valid. To clean up some logic, I was going to throw an exception if a particular form wasn't found. This is mainly to find the correct form associated with a resource type so proper validation can occur. Does this sound like a valid use case for an exception? Right now it's pretty trivial, but I do plan to implement a restful consumer and re-using a function to map resources to their validation services would be very useful. I can then catch the exception and based on the consumer, return an error message suitable for the request type...

  I am making my second application for the Windows 7 Phone Series platform and I cannot seem to connect to a SharePoint server using https. 99% of the following is not my code. If you dig down into the error output it says access is denied. I have tried various methods of sending credentials but none seem to work. "ClientCredentials.Windows" is not supported and ClientCredentials.UsersName.Username is read only.

  My situation is that I have agreed on a per-project proposal with the client. The proposal is vague, but still names functionality in a way that can be argued as to whether it's included or not, while leaving some room for interpretation. I originally pressed as much as I could to get a per-month contract, arguing that the project is mostly non-predictable, but the client refused. Being a small company, I had to fold and signed a contract on an estimate based on my group's estimations. At this point we have reached completion on about 85% of the features (we think) but we ran out of budget. We have been working for almost two years with this client in previous contracts, and we have delivered a good product that they are happy with, so we have a good standing relationship. More info: -There has been a bit of scope-creep, but I don't think enough for me to hide behind that argument -We've been delivering partial releases about monthly. -We don't have systematic user-testing in place.

  Beginners and professional, on blogs, in forums and chatrooms - people say it everywhere: C++ oh dear god no The short form of the question: For what reason is C++ so widely disliked and people are horrified by the imagination of using it for some project? I have been using a lot of different languages, including C++ by now, and I can only say that I really like it. I'm far more horrified by Delphi than by C++. Actually, I find it's an almost perfect, compiled language! I've been doing a lot of different projects in C++ as well, ranging from 3D video games to webservers and emulators for old video game consoles. And I still do not see the problem everyone else seems to have with it!

  Hi, I wrote an IHttpModule that compress my respone using gzip (I return a lot of data) in order to reduce response size. It is working great as long as the web service doesn't throws an exception. In case exception is thrown, the exception gzipped but the Content-encoding header is disappear and the client doesn't know to read the exception. How can I solve this? Why the header is missing? I need to get the exception in the client.   I encountered an exception in our application that isn't handled at all. I really don't know what to look for to debug this problem since the application close immediately when this peculiar exception is thrown (even running from VS). Even if I catch the problematic exception and throw it again, the application closes silently. None of the 3 handlers (ApplicationExit, ThreadException, UnhandledException) get fired (breakpoints not hit). I have no idea what or why that new exception is throwing? 2) Now that a different exception is throwing on the server side instead of the file not found, it would seem I can't use this set up for the application, because back on client side, any exception is assumed to be filenotfound. Any help, especially info on why this ThreadAbortException is throwing!?!? greatly appreciated. Cheers

  I thought I had a working solution for converting .mdi files to PDF using the Microsoft Office Document Imaging object model. The solution is in a Windows Service, but now I'm running into some errors that I'm having trouble tracking down info on. The exception I get is: The server threw an exception. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT)) System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80010105): The server threw an exception. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT)) at MODI.DocumentClass.Create(String FileOpen) at DocumentStore.Mdi2PDF(String path, String newPath) Then, in the Event Viewer there is the following Application error: Faulting application MyWindowsServiceName.exe, version 1.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4b97f185, faulting module mso.dll, version 12.0.6425.1000, time stamp 0x49d65443, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000bd8e, process id 0xa5c, application start time 0x01cac08cf032914b. Here's the method that is doing the conversion: private int? I also built a a console apps converting hundreds of documents and DID NOT get the exception. So, it seems to be caused by creating too many instances of the MODI object, but only instantiated within a Service? Doesn't quite make sense. Anybody have any clues about these errors and how to debug them further?

• Data in J2ME RecordStore does not persist across sessions

  I'm building a mobile app with J2ME, and I've found that the data I write into a RecordStore can be accessed while the program is still running but it is lost after quitting and restarting it. No exception is thrown, the data is simply lost. UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm using NetBeans on Windows 7. I'm not sure if it is using the WTK version I have previously installed or another one it has installed somewhere else. I've checked my WTK folder for the files Pavel wrote about, but couldn't find them. This is the error I'm testing with: Dim i As Integer = 5 i = i / 0 The problem is SL is banging on with this message: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException was unhandled by user code Message=There was an error while trying to serialize parameter :bug. The InnerException message was 'Type 'System.OverflowException' with data contract name 'OverflowException:http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/System' is not expected. Add any types not known statically to the list of known types - for example, by using the KnownTypeAttribute attribute or by adding them to the list of known types passed to DataContractSerializer.'. Please see InnerException for more details. Is there some trick to get a generic .NET Exception (any InnerException) to serialize properly? The problem is that my code was always working in 32-bit environments, but when I try THE SAME executable in a 64-bit computer it crashes with a System.OverflowException exception. • What's the deal with the hidden Throw when catching a ThreadAbortException?

  I'm going through a book of general c# development, and I've come to the thread abort section. The book says something along the lines that when you call Thread.Abort() on another thread, that thread will throw a ThreadAbortException, and even if you tried to supress it it would automatically rethrow it, unless you did some bs that's generally frowned upon. It’s the same as if you had rethrown the exception yourself. Therefore, any outer exception handlers or finally blocks will still execute normally. In the example, the call to Join won’t be waiting forever as initially expected. So i wrapped a try catch around the Thread.Abort() call and set a break point, expecting it to hit this, considering the text says "any outer exception handlers or finally blocks will still execute normally". BUT IT DOES NOT. I'm racking my brain to figure out why. Anyone have any thoughts on why this isn't the case? Is the book wrong? Thanks in advance.

• multiple vlans routed on one nic? trunk?General? or Access?

  ok for the last week I've tried racking my head around this... I have a SRW208P with 802.1q support, and a virtual endian appliance. I would like to be able to have 3 vlans having everything routed through the endian appliance.. i.e. The Virtual server has 2 bridged NIC's to the switch. This is where I'm getting confused .. On the 8 port switch I've got the 3 vlans set up ok (all being untagged as they are not going to be vlan aware), it's the port I'm connecting the endian firewall to the switch I'm having trouble with (second nic goes to the adsl modem and NAT'd) Is it meant to be a trunk, "Genereal" or "Access" then untagged or tagged? the end goal is to have vlan traffic routing through the single NIC and have endian route vlan traffic according to the rules. Any one have any ideas on the cisco small business stuff? Thanks

  Pre-note: This is not a problem I am having with Minecraft. All answers I can find seem to be Minecraft issues. Error: could not create the Java Virtual Machine. Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit. I get this error when I try to do something Java related. I cannot launch a .jar without this error coming up and when I try to install JDK, I get this error. This has been plauging me for a while and I was not able to research an answer so I thought I would ask it myself. EDIT: Windows 7 (x64) Dell Studio Laptop, 4GB RAM, external Radeon HD 6950 Graphics Card. I have tried uninstalling all JVMs and reinstalling but it didn't work, although I cannot remember how thorough I was so I may try again.
