• Protecting an Application's Memory From Tampering

  We are adding AES 256 bit encryption to our server and client applications for encrypting the TCP/IP traffic containing sensitive information. We will be rotating the keys daily. Because of that, the keys will be stored in memory with the applications. Key distribution process: Each server and client will have a list of initial Key Encryption Key's (KEK) by day If the client has just started up or the server has just started up, the client will request the daily key from the server using the initial key. The server will respond with the daily key, encrypted with the initial key. The daily key is a randomly generated set of alphanumeric characters. We are using AES 256 bit encryption. All subsequent communications will be encrypted using that daily key. Nightly, the client will request the new daily key from the server using the current daily key as the current KEK. After the client gets the new key, the new daily key will replace the old daily key. Is it possible for another bad application to gain access to this memory illegally or is this protected in Windows? The key will not be written to a file, only stored in a variable in memory. If an application can access the memory illegally, how can you protect the memory from tampering? We are using C++ and XP (Vista/7 may be an option in the future so I don't know if that changes the answer).

• problem with evolutionary algorithms degrading into simulated annealing: mutation too small?

  i have a problem understanding evolutionary algorithms. i tried using this technique several times, but i always ran into the same problem: degeneration into simulated annealing. lets say my initial population, with fitness in brackets, is: A (7), B (9), C (14), D (19) after mating and mutation i have following children: AB (8.3), AC (12.2), AD (14.1), BC(11), BD (14.7), CD (17) after elimination of the weakest, we get A, AB, B, AC next turn, AB will mate again with a result around 8, pushing AC out. next turn, AB again, pushing B out (assuming mutation changes fitness mostly in the 1 range). now, after only a few turns the pool is populated with the originally fittest candidates (A, B) and mutations of those two (AB). this happens regardless of the size of the initial pool, it just takes a bit longer. say, with an initial population of 50 it takes 50 turns, then all others are eliminated, turning the whole setup in a more complicated simulated annealing. in the beginning i also mated canditates with themselves, worsening the problem. so, what do i miss? are my mutation rates simply too small and will it go away if i increase them? here's the project i'm using it for: http://stefan.schallerl.com/simuan-grid-grad/ yeah, the code is buggy and the interface sucks, but i'm too lazy to fix it right now - and be careful, it may lock up your browser. better use chrome, even thought firefox is not slower than chrome for once (probably the tracing for the image comparison pays off, yay!). if anyone is interested, the code can be found here. here i just dropped the ev-alg idea and went for simulated annealing. ps: i'm not even sure about simulated annealing - it is like evolutionary algorithms, just with a population size of one, right?

• css layout for footer at bottom with dynamic ajax content changing height of page

  [Update] I actually compromised on this problem for now by foregoing the fixed footer design. It seems that there is no problem with dynamic content moving the footer and resizing containers appropriately unless the footer is fixed to the browser bottom initially. I hope others will eventually provide a great solution that encompasses the best of both worlds. I spent all day trying to get the footer to move down the page to accommodate dynamically added (via ajax) content. I really need some pointers or links because I haven't found anything that helps. Basically: My site has some pages that begin with only a text box and a button so that the total height of the content area is only a few inches beneath the header area. I don't have any problem getting the sticky footer working so that the footer appears at the bottom of the browser window even when there is very little content on screen. That same css layout works fine for other pages that have content that extends beneath the browser window. The catch: The content has to be rendered and passed to the browser with the initial load. The Problem: Any content that is added to the page via AJAX after the initial load paints down the page correctly -- but the footer remains in its initial location. Please tell me there is a fix for this. I can't post the css until checking with my boss first - if possible - and if needed, I will later - but it's just a very basic version of the many sticky footer css solutions floating around the web. • Stop functions in 5 minutes if they dont end running

  I want to add a feature in my project. I have 2 functions running in a for-loop because I want to find the solution of the functions in random arrays. I also have an function that makes random arrays. In each loop the array that is made by the random_array fun are the input of the 2 functions. The 2 functions print solutions in the screen , they dont return an argument. int main(){ for (i=0;i<50 i++) { arr1=ramdom_array(); func1(arr1) func2(arr1) } } I need to stop the functions running if they have not ended in 5 minutes. I have thought that I have to put in the functions something like this : void func1(array<array<int,4>,4> initial) { while (5minutes_not_passed) { //do staff if(solution==true) break; } } But I dont know what to put in the 5minutes_not_passed. the declaration of the functions are like this: void func1(array<array<int,4>,4> initial) void func2(array<array<int,4>,4> initial) I have found that I can use the thread library but I dont think meshing up with threads in a good idea. I believe something like a timer is needed. Note that the functions sometimes might end before 5 minutes.

• Basic Ajax Cache Issue

  I have a single page that I need to on occasion asynchronously check the server to see if the status of the page is current (basically, Live or Offline). You will see I have a function with a var live that is set when the page initially loads. I then do an ajax request to the server to retrieve whether the status of live is true or false. I compare the initial live variable with the newly returned data json object. If they're the same I do nothing, but if there different I apply some css classes. I recursively run it with setTimeout (Is there a better way to recursively do this?). My Problem: data.live doesn't change from it's initial time it runs even when it has changed in the db. I know my mysql is working because it returs the right value on the initial load. It seems like a caching issue. • Process for configuring network settings on a headless rack mount device

  I'm with a small company that plans to sell a rack mounted network appliance which is configurable via a web interface (think of a router configuration page sort of deal), and I'm wondering in large data center like environments what the process usually is for the initial setup of such systems. The main question is, if the system is headless, how do you get initial remote access to it? Do companies usually first plug a server into a monitor/keyboard/mouse in order to configure the network settings before mounting it in a rack? How else would they know what the IP address of the machine was if DHCP (and it can't be hard coded because of IP conflict potential)?

  I have setup mirroring on my MSSQL server it is an automatic fail over. Lets say the SQL server goes down. I have found connection strings to reconnect the site to the mirror database for MSSQL 2008 Data Source=myServerAddress;Failover Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;Integrated Security=True; OR Provider=SQLNCLI10;Data Source=myServerAddress;Failover Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;Integrated Security=True; OR Driver={SQL Server Native Client 10.0};Server=myServerAddress;Failover_Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Database=myDataBase; Trusted_Connection=yes; Is there something similar I can use for PHP to do the same sort of thing. This way if only the database goes down the site instantly fails over to the mirror database as soon as it is online. Thoughts/Suggestions/Comments All appreciated. • Return cell reference as result of if statement with vlookups.

  I have two sets of data in excel. One contains a set of data which represents the initial step of a process. The other set of data represents the additional steps which take place after the first step is completed. Each of the data records in the "additional step data" has an id in a column. I need to find the identifying codes of the "additional step data" which correspond with the initial step data records. The problem is that I have to match the data in 4 columns between the two data sets and return the id of the "additional step data". I started by doing a combination of an if and vlookup functions, but I got stuck when I tried to figure out how to get the if statement to reference the id of the matching "additional step data". Basically I am trying to avoid having to search by manually filtering between two sets of data and finding corresponding records. Does anyone have any idea about how to do this?

• How to force Debian to boot new Kernel?

  I'm running Debian 6, Debian GNU/Linux, with Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 under Grub2 ( 1.98+20100804-14+squeeze1) on a remote system (no possibility to view the pre-boot messages). I compiled and installed a new kernel, but I can not get it to boot. What I have done: Installed the packages via: dpkg -i linux-headers-3.5.3.20120914-amd64_3.5.3.20120914-amd64-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb linux-image-3.5.3.20120914-amd64_3.5.3.20120914-amd64-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb This updated the Grub configuration. Would there be any hints regarding problems with a kernel? Is there a way to enable debug-logging in grub? What am I doing wrong? How can I force the system to boot the new kernel? • Hard link not works under MacOS in GUI mode

  Hi, i faced a little strange behavior, while using hard links. From terminal, i create a text file 1.txt and a hard link "to this file" nano 1.txt mkdir dir ln 1.txt ./dir/ I check the resulting hard link and see that its contents are the same as of the original file. less ./dir/1.txt I change the initial file ... nano 1.txt ... and see, that changes was reflected in hard-link less ./dir/1.txt I change content of hard-link (more correct, of course - file, being referenced with hard-link) ... nano ./dir/1.txt ... and see, that changes are reflected in initial file less 1.txt Until now, all going well... Now, I close terminal and start playing with created files (1.txt and ./dir/1.txt) from Finder. When i change on this two files with TextEdit, changes are not reflected in another file. Just like the hard link was teared off... What is going on here ?

• Windows Explorer Jumplist delay

  I've begun to have an issue with the Jump list for Windows Explorer (Windows 7). What happens is that when i gesture click, or right click on the explorer icon the first time after rebooting the initial menu (Windows Explorer, Unpin) and the Jump List with my pinned folders and frequent folders works fine. Any subsequent attempt will open the initial menu, but the jump list will experience a long delay (10-20 seconds) before the pinned and frequent folders will pop up. Initially my frequent folders would grab a networked drive which I thought might be the cause. I have removed that from the list and there is still no change. I really enjoy being able to quickly hit directories i use often and this is quite frustrating. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

• Avoid cache overflow in Atempo LiveBackup

  When attempting the initial backup of a new client, Atempo LiveBackup seems to require a very large cache. For instance, a 20 GB cache is not enough to back up a computer that has 100 GB of data. It appears that LiveBackup is adding new files to the cache at a faster rate than it can send them to the server. When the cache fills up, the backup fails. Aside from removing most data from the computer and then add them back gradually after the initial backup, is there a good workaround? Is it possible to make LiveBackup slow down its scan so as to not fill the cache? Or is it possible to place the cache on an external drive?

• Is it possible to continue torrent downloads from other client

  I have downloaded a torrent file but I downloaded it using bitlord. And because bit lord doesnt have the ability like initial seeding. I decided to use utorrent. Ive already tried to continue it. What I did was to: Opened the original torrent file in utorrent. Target where the incomplete bitlord incomplete file was. But it seems that utorrent isn't detecting the file and it makes another copy of it and start to download from the beginning. Im at about 80 percent and there are only 18 seeds but there's 17 leech. And my connection is slow so I really have to initial seed. Other details: I've reformatted the original machine where I downloaded it. Also didn't copy the original application.

• Infinite sharing system (PHP/MySQLi)

  I'm working on a discount system for whichever customer shares a product and brings in new customers. Each unique visit = $0.05 off, each new customer = $0.50 off (it's a cheap product so yeah, no big numbers). When a new customer shares the site, the customer initially responsible for the new customer (if any) will get half of the new customer's discount as well. The initial customer would get a fourth for the next level and the new customer half of that, etc, creating a tree or pyramid that way that could be infinite. Initial customer ($1.35 discount: 2 new+3 visits + half of 1 new+2 visits) Visitor ($0) Visitor ($0) New customer ($0.60) Visitor ($0) Visitor ($0) Newer customer ($0) New customer ($0) Visitor ($0) The customers are saved along with their IP addresses (bin2hex(inet_pton)) in a database table (customers) with info like a unique id, e-mail address and first date/time the purchased a product (= time of registration). The shares are saved in a separate table within the same database (sharing). Each unique IP addresses that visits the site creates a new row featuring the IP address (also saved as bin2hex(inet_pton)), the id of the customer who shared it and the date/time of the visit. Sharing goes via URL, featuring a GET element containing the customer's id. Visits and new customers overlap, as visits will always occur before the new customer does. That's fine. The date/times are used just to make it a little more secure (I also use the IP along with cookies to see if people cheat the system). If an IP is already in the sharing or customer tables, it does not count and will not create a new entry. Now the problem is, how to make the infinity happen and apply the different values to it? That's all I'd need to know. It needs to calculate the discount for each customer separately, but also allow for monitoring altogether (though that's just a matter of passing all ID's through it). I figured I'd start (after the database connection) with $stmt = $con->prepare('SELECT ip,datetime FROM sharing WHERE sender=?'); $stmt->bind_param('i',$customerid); $stmt->execute(); $stmt->store_result(); $discount = $discount + ($stmt->num_rows * 0.05); $stmt->bind_result($ip,$timeofsharing); to translate all the visits to $0.05 of discount each. To check for the new customers that came from these visits, I wrote the following: while ($sql->fetch()) { $stmt2 = $con->prepare("SELECT datetime FROM users WHERE ip=?"); $stmt2->bind_param('s',$ip); $stmt2->execute(); $stmt2->store_result(); $stmt2->bind_result($timeofpurchase); Followed by a little more security comparing the datetimes: while ($stmt2->fetch()) { if (strtotime($timeofpurchase) < strtotime($timeofsharing)) { $discount = $discount + $0.50; } But this is just for the initial customer's direct results. If I'd want to check for the next level, I'd basically have to put the exact same check and loop in itself, checking each new customer the initial customer they brought to the site, and then for the next level again to check all of the newer customers, etc, etc. What to do? / Where to go? / What would be the correct practice for this? • Scoring/analysis of Subjective testing for skills assessment

  I am lucky in the sense that I have been given the opportunity to be a 'Technical Troubleshooter' for our offshore development team. While I am confident and capable of dealing with most issues, I have come across something that I am not. Based on initial discussions with various team members both on and offshore, a requirement for a 'repeatable, consistent' skills assessment has been identified. In my opinion, the best way to achieve this would be a combination of objective and subjective tests. The former normally being an initial online skills assessment on various subjects, for example General C#, WCF and MVC. The latter being a technical test where the candidate would need to solve various problems and (hopefully) explain the thought processes involved with the solution whilst doing so. Obviously, the first method is consistent, repeatable and extremely accurate. The second is always going to be subjective and based on the approach, the solution (or possibly not) and other factors. The 'scoring' of this is also going to be down to the experience and skills of the assessor and this is where my problem lies; The person that is expected to be the assessor initially (me) has no experience. The people that will ultimately continue this process for other people will never remain the same due to project constraints and internal reasons, this changes the baseline for comparison. I am not aware of any suitable system that can be classed as consistent and repeatable for subjective tests with the 2 factors above, let alone if those did not exist. So anyway, I have to present a plan that will ultimately generate a skills/gap analysis and it is unlikely that I will be able to use an objective method (budget constraints most likely reason). The only option left is the subjective methods and the issues above. Does anyone have any suggestions for an approach that may tick all the boxes?
