• SCCM 2012 R2 - OSD Task Sequence failure on physical computers

  I'm trying to deploy windows 7 with SCCM 2012 R2 to physical desktops and laptops. But the task sequence keeps failing, no matter what I try. When I try it on a VM it works fine. However, when I try it on a physical computer it fails. So I think it has something to do with drivers, but I already tried both the "auto apply drivers" + wmi query for model method, and also the "apply driver package" + wmi query for model method. In the link below I added a zip file, containing two other zip files. One is a captured log from a failed osd on a desktop, the other is the export of my task sequence. Download zip-file with log and TS If anyone could resolve the issue, or share their own task sequence for such a task (pure sccm 2012 (R2), no MDT), that would be great.

• Robocopy Mirror Backup gone awry

  I have created a simple batch file script for running Robocopy. It is set to make a backup of my user account folder to my external hard drive. The size of my user account directory is 18.3 GB but the backup of it occupies over 30 GB. After reading the contents of the log generated, it is obvious that it's copying files more than once. Why is this happening? I'm running Windows Seven Home Premium 64-bit.

• Interesting sessions/tips from RMOUG

  One of the sessions I was at at last week's RMOUG was a session on Temp Tablespace Groups. I had a look because I had no experience with this and it seemed to help with parallel processing and the allocation/usage of temp. You can read the excellent write-up at Kellyn Pedersen's blog - who did the session and all the work - here. So for all of those who may be seeing lot's of waits like enq: TS - Contention when you are doing hash joins and sorts, do have a look at the above blog post. I also had the chance to listen in at Stewart Bryson's session on Restartability (he had 3 R-s) where he gave very useful tips about how to deal with your data warehouse loads. Questions like archive log mode - should I or should I not were well covered. Flashback archives, also nice to hear about. Very nice talk, very interesting. Unfortunately he hasn't blogged about it yes, so no pointers to that one. Got to see a couple of other interesting sessions, and as conferences go got to meet some interesting Oracle folks from the region. As usual RMOUG was useful and fun. Off to the drawing boards to design next year's session!

I would like to implement the following process: User opens up web app in browser In web app, user enters username + password, initiates RADIUS auth Phone factor calls user to complete auth Once user is authenticated, port 3389 is opened on user's IP on pfSense firewall. After some amount of time, firewall rule is removed for that IP I would like to know the following: Is this a typical setup? If it is a bad idea, please explain why. If it is possible, are there any packages that assist with this? Specifically, the third step, where the appropriate firewall rule would need to be added... Edit: I am aware of TS Web Gateway, but I want the users to be able to use the traditional RDP client...

• Apache 2.4.2 with PHP 5.4.4 crashes as soon as phpinfo() script is opened

  As soon as i open a phpinfo() script called version.php apache stops working. Here is the error.log file. • Active Directory theme policies

  Hey, I'm currently managing a terminal server in a domain. As the TS-service just got installed, previous users (I logged in with every user once to test it and set up a few things) use the default windows 2008 theme. New users automatically use the fancy Aero theme. Is there a way to push the Aero theme to all current users? I currently have something like this in my policies: However, when logging in with a user, the theme is not changed. Only if I disable "prohibit access to the control panel", the theme can be changed (doesn't seem to change automatically). But this gives them access to every other control panel feature as well. And giving users only access to "desk.cpl" CP-applet, gives them an access error as well when attempting to change the theme. Another question: can I, as admin, take over and/or log in as another user when that user is not logged in? Thanks

• Put a Windows computer to sleep remotely (from a Linux box)

  I'd like to have my Linux box (a QNAP TS-210 NAS) send the order to go to sleep (or hibernation) to my main Windows 7 computer. As the NAS is running Linux, I can't use psshutdown from SysInternals' PsTools. Is there any Linux equivalent? Or some "magic packet" that can order the Win7 computer to sleep. I know I could install a SSH daemon and trigger a shutdown command from the Linux box using ssh, but ideally I do not want to install anything on the Win7 computer. I can install Linux software on the NAS, no problem about this. PHP, python and perl are also available on it.

  The command shows the tcp receive buffer size in bytes. $ cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rmem 4096 87380 4001344 where the three values signifies the min, default and max values respectively.   I have a Dell R710 with 72GB of memory running Hyper-V. Within Hyper-V I have a Windows 2008 (32-bit) VM running Terminal Services. How do I allocate memory so that any user who connects to this Terminal Server (from their thin-client) is allocated 2GB (or whatever amount I choose) of memory? Currently I have provisioned the TS with 2GB of memory but it seems that this is shared among all that connect. Please let me know if there is further information I can provide. Thank you. Update 1: What I'm looking to accomplish with this server is setting up a VDI to allow users to connect from thin-clients from within our network. They will also have to connect from outside our network via VPN which is already in place. Am I able to set this up using Windows Server 2008 (not R2) because I have a 16-bit application which needs to be supported. Unfortunately it's not a candidate as a Remote App.

• Simple NAS setup for Ubuntu

  So, I want to connect my shiny new NAS (QNAP TS-210p II) to my Ubuntu 11.10 box. I have a 2nd Ubuntu machine, but I don't use that enough to be too worried about it. Use is ideally to offload all storage except for system (which can then run off a 30GB flash drive). The main machine also runs Myth front/backends. Both are on a wired network currently. I have got a basic setup working, mounted over NFS, but have some issues, and whenever I look for answers, I seem to get unto the UbuntuServer domain, with what seems like more detail than I want in an answer. Questions I have identified so far: 1) Sharing UIDs to get file permissions correct. LDAP or something else? What is necessary to make this work? 2) Mounting an NFS device reliably. Do I just add it in fstab or is some sort of auto-mount advisable? Its a wired network, but I shouldn't need to worry about reboot after power-outages and sequencing...

• Performance problems on RDC to our Terminal-Server Win2008 R2

  Hello, we have a new win2008-R2 (2x Xeon X5570, 32GB RAM). There I have installed the terminal-server roles, thats all OK. Currently 5 users are working at this server, but all get a very low performance in their remote-desktop session. Sometime it takes 1-2 seconds till the keyboard-inputs will be performed and shown. At the clients I run RDP v 6.1 We have also an older TS-server (based on Win2003 with an Opteron-CPU), there are working about 20 users at the same time. There I do not have the troubles with the inputs at the remote-desktop sessions. Both servers are connected to the same gigabit-switch. Any ideas what could cause the troubles at the Win2008 R2? • Is Windows Media Player able to play DTS audio?

  I'm trying to play DTS audio with Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7. For a MPEG-TS file with video and DTS audio, only video is played. A file containing only a DTS audio stream is rejected. But: WMP is able to play the DTS audio stream of a DVD. So, Is Windows Media Player able to play DTS audio, or not? And if: How do I make him play my DTS files? I did not find any good resources of the supported codecs. Just things like "WMP can play .mpg files, ..." VLC is able to play all of the above files. I do not want to install third party codec packs, thats not the question!

• Win Server 2008: Task Scheduler runs programs twice or late

  Hi, I need to restart a service every day. I have logon hours restricted at 3:00 am, and the server will logout existing TS connections. I have two tasks scheduled: "Daily At 3:20 am every day" "start a program" "c:\windows\system32\sc.exe stop myservice" "Daily At 3:22 am every day" "start a program" "c:\windows\system32\sc.exe start myservice" I came in today to notice that the service wasn't running. I've been digging in logs, and found these entries: For stop task, history: a) 3:29:35 am: Action Completed (sc result code 0) b) 3:20:00 am: Action Completed (sc result code 0) For start task, history: a) 3:29:35 am: Action Completed (sc result code ERROR_SERVICE_ALREADY_RUNNING 1056 (0x420)) b) 3:22:01 am: Action Completed (sc result code 0) Checking event logs shows me: a) 3:29:35 am, Application log, Source myservice, "The service was stopped" b) 3:29:25 am, System log, Source Service Control Manager, "The myservice service entered the stopped state" So, What would have caused both tasks to run at 3:29 am? Why don't I see a message from the SCM saying that the service entered the running state? Is this the preferred way to do this? Thanks!

• Domain users sometimes cannot access our NAS

  I'm using a QNAP TS-410 Turbo NAS and I've got domain users connecting to it frequently everyday. However, there are times when their connection to the NAS will seem to just drop and, suddenly, they cannot access their network drives (which I had set up our Domain Controller to automatically map to folders on the NAS). Could you please tell me what may cause this? I don't think it is a network issue as everything else seems to work just fine. (If more details are needed, please let me know so I can update this question.)

What I'd like to do is to monitor the email sent by the application. For this I need a dummy SMTP server which intercepts messages but won't send them further but save them locally on the hard disk. I've already found some of them like Papercut, SMTP4Dev. The problem with these that I have to be logged on the server all the time which is not suitable because the server has only 2+1 TS connections. I like to run a program like these as a windows service and check the mails when I need them.

• Best client and server antivirus for 5 user office?

  I'm setting up an Active Directory environment for 5 users (very small) and I'm wondering what is the best antivirus for clients (Windows 7) and servers (Server 2008 R2 x64)? I use Symantec Corp at my organization (50+ users) but I think that is overkill for this company. I wanted to use Microsoft Security Essentials for the clients (I use it for home machines and it's the best free AV in my opinion) but I don't think it will work on the Servers (3 servers, PDC, TS, and File). They are behind a Sonicwall TZ 200. What would be the best. Free would be even better. Thank you!

• Cannot view, use, or open CDs or DVDs in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am fairly new to Ubuntu 12.04 and I have encountered a rather irritating problem. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD (whether it have data, music, movies, or nothing at all), nothing pops up saying "you have inserted a CD", "play with Rhythmbox?" etc. It doesn't show the CD in the launcher/dock or anything of the sort. This is especially peculiar because not only do I have a standard IDE built-in optical drive, but I have an external USB optical drive. Neither work. In addition, whenever I go to "Computer///" and I click (double click, right click, or even left click) on "CD/DVD Drive" nothing happens, when I right click and select "Open" nothing happens either [for either of the two drives (both are listed in Computer///)] And if I insert a blank disk and go to a disk burning program such as Brasero, and try to burn to the drive it detects no CDs or DVDs of any kind. • Dual booted Windows 7 freezes after login screen

  First-time Linux user, using a Packard Bell Easy Note TS laptop. My problem arose after I dual boot installed Ubuntu 12.04 on Windows 7 via WUBI. I backed up all my data, and reinstalled Windows from factory settings on the recovery partition. When I first tried to install Ubuntu I mistakenly closed the lid at the start of the installation, stopping it. After that I rebooted, and my second installation attempt went without a hitch. Ubuntu works perfectly, the data on the partitions seem to be fine. My problem is I can't log back in to Windows 7. After selecting it in GRUB, and then in the Windows 7/ WUBI choice on boot, it loads up perfectly til the user log in screen. After the password is inputted, it stalls on the "Welcome" busy screen. This happens in Safe mode as well. Startup repair can't find a problem and neither can CHKDSK. System restore and Last known good config have no effect either. If anyone could help me out, I'd be real grateful. edit in response to the question below, since I don't know how to comment: Windows was installed first and its partitions are the first on the list. Should I move the windows partitions to after the Linux ones on the disk? Thanks for your help.

• Default user logon on Windows Server system

  I installed Remote Desktop Services role (ex Terminal Services) on my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. After installation when I try to logon locally, there's no default user as it used to be. Can I tweak group policy to have my default user back? I did enable to remember last logon user, but it didn't work... Obviously RDS (ex TS) ignores this policy setting. Additional note: I'm not connected to a domain. It's a standalone development machine running server OS. No domain needed for it.

• What is a descriptive name for a web service that responds with plain text?

  I'm looking for the proper name for a web service that responds with text as opposed to XML. As an example this "cardServer" service will return 5 cards for a poker hand. http://hostname:8080/cardServer/deal/Game=Poker&Qty=5 The result could look like this: Card1=Ad Card2=Kc Card3=Ts Card4=5d Card5=3d The real world example is not as trivial, but the concept is the same. Parameters if any are passed as POST variables. We currently parse the response into a string list and use the values. The process works just fine. What I'm wondering if this service method has a name that has easier tools to deal with the responses and therefore did we reinvent the wheel? For the record the service was provided and maintained by a customer.

• Lots of artifacts while streaming HD content with VLC 0.9.9 on CentOS

  I'm trying to stream (multicast) a x264 encoded file using VLC. This in itself succeeds, but the stream has a huge lot of artifacts. This seems to suggest that the data cannot be transported fast enough. If I check network usage, though, it's only using about 15 mbit. I have a similar SD stream which functions perfectly. I think I could improve stream performance by not streaming the raw data, but I cannot seem to get this working. It seems that on keyframes all artifacts are removed for a short while (less than a second). This is the command I use: vlc -vv hdtest.mkv --sout '#duplicate{dst=rtp{dst=ff02::1%eth1,mux=ts,port=5678,sap,group="Testgroup",name="TeststreamHD"}}' --loop Which is all one long line.
