  • Improving sound quality with remote ESD server

    Hi, I'm investigating low-budget ways to get audio from my PC (Ubuntu) to HiFi without wires. I'm currently testing a setup where Asus WL-500gP wireless router runs ESD daemon and has attached USB soundcard which is then plugged into HiFi. I'm testing playback on PC with mpg123-esd and Spotify under Wine. The sound is there, latency is unexpectedly low, but I also hear occassional clicks and some distortion from time to time. I suppose that's because of the low latency and wireless streaming of uncompressed audio--any packet drops, CPU temporarily being busy etc. will cause clicks in sound output. Is there a way around this problem, increasing latency / buffer size somehow perhaps? Streaming using shoutcast protocol seems to be a way out but I have feeling that would be a complex and brittle setup.

    I'm curious if their is some python magic I may not know to accomplish a bit of frivolity given the line: csvData.append(','.join([line.split(":").strip() for x in L])) I'm attempting to split a line on :, trim whitespace around it, and join on , problem is, since the array is returned from line.split(":"), the for x in L #<== L doesn't exist! causes issues since I have no name for the array returned by line.split(":") So I'm curious if there is a sexy piece of syntax I could use to accomplish this in one shot?     If you have a wide screen monitor then you may want to make better use of Internet Explorer’s browser window area. Now you can split the browser window into dual-panes as needed with the IE Split browser plugin. Note: Requires .NET Framework 2.0 or higher (link provided below). IE Split in Action If you are using an older version of this software here is something to keep in mind before upgrading to the 2.0 release. Once you have installed IE Split you will notice a new toolbar added to your browser. As seen here, you can condense it down tightly and access it using the drop-down bar. A closer look at the drop-down bar. Notice the address bar…this will be for the left pane when you split the browser window. Here is our browser split into dual-panes. There are two address bars and two tab/title bars each corresponding to their appropriate pane. It may look slightly backwards at first but is not hard to get used to. A better view of the left pane with the IE Split navigation & title bars showing. Note: The title bar can be hidden if desired. And the right pane. You can also have multiple “split” tabs open if needed. There is nothing quite like getting double the value for the same amount of space. When you no longer need dual-panes open just click on the “x” to close IE Split down. All back to normal again. Conclusion While might not be for everyone this can still be useful for those who need side-by-side access to websites without using multiple separate windows.   • Java sound doesn't work under Linux

    Help! I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms! I just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions. Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) can somebody help me figure out what's wrong?

  • If I want to play the same sound 10 times per second, must I have 10 copies of that sound in memory?

    I have a sound that needs to get played 10 times per second. The sound is 1 second long. So it does overlap like 10 times. However, as far as I understand the Finch sound library, I would need 10 different instances of a sound in place so that I can play it 10 times at almost the same time. When I have just one instance, the sound would stop and play from the beginning on every iteration, but not overlap with itself. How to do that?

The format of the split function I am using is also the same except, of course, for the delimiting character. What causes this variation?

  • Android Loading & Playing Sound Based on String

    I'm currently working on a simple Android app, and right now I am trying to get it to load in and play sounds. The problem I am faced with is that I want the sound it uses to be based on a string (With the same name as the sound file). The reason for this is simplicity in both the code and adding on to it. Now unfortunately I can't just slap a string in place of referencing the actual sound, but is there some way for me to compare a string to the entire raw folder to find the matching sound, or some other alternative short of defining every sound manually?   • Is there another way to restart Ubuntu 12.04's sound system if pulseaudio/ALSA don't work?

    I was listening to music, and my sound suddenly went dead in all my applications. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, which uses pulseaudio, so I tried sudo /etc/init.d/pulseaudio restart, but nothing happened. According to lsof | grep pcm, nothing is using the soundcard at the moment, although I'm not entirely sure if my source for that command is applicable. Is there a way another way to restart Ubuntu 12.04's sound system from the command line without rebooting the system?

  • Splitting HDMI sound to 2 devices under Windows 7

    Okay, this is a strange set-up and is frustrating me. I have an HDMI signal from my PC being split to my audio receiver and my HDTV. I need to split it to both so that I can choose to either play audio from the HDTV or from the surround sound speakers in the room. The problem that I am having is in Windows 7, the output is listed under "Playback Devices" and is auto-populated with the HDTV, which only has the option for stereo sound. If I unplug the HDTV from the splitter it will populate with my receiver information and let me set it to 5.1 surround, but as soon as I plug the HDTV back in it reverts. I tried reversing the order of the HDMI cables in the splitter and this seemed to work for a short while, then Windows must have polled the devices again or something because it reverted. It will work as long as Windows identifies the reciever, thereby unlocking the 5.1 surround option, otherwise I am stuck with stereo, which it assumes is all the HDTV is capable of. Is there a way to manually override this and set my own options? Or any other solutions?

  • Force Juniper-network client to use split routing

    I'm using the Juniper client for OSX ('Network Connect') to access a client's VPN. It appears that the client is configured to not use split-routing. The client's VPN host is not willing to enable split-routing. Is there a way for me to over-ride this configuration or do sometime on my workstation to get the non-client network traffic to by-pass the VPN? This wouldn't be a big deal, but none of my streaming radio stations (e.g. XM) work will connected to their VPN. Apologies for any inaccuracies in the terminology. ** edit ** The Juniper client changes my system's resolve.conf file from: nameserver 192.168.0.1 to: search XXX.com [redacted] nameserver 10.30.16.140 nameserver 10.30.8.140 I've attempted to restore my preferred DNS entry to the file $ sudo echo "nameserver 192.168.0.1" >> /etc/resolv.conf but this results in the following error: -bash: /etc/resolv.conf: Permission denied How does the super-user account not have access to this file? Is there a way to prevent the Juniper client from making changes to this file?

    I just changed my Apache log behavior because it was making me having very BIG files... So I now use cronolog to split my logs to log/httpd/2012/11/access_2012.11.30.log for exemple, pattern : %Y/%m/access_%Y.%m.%d.log I now want to split my old 42GB file to the same structure but really don't know how to do that efficiently. I tried some simple commands with cat, egrep, awk... but really don't know how to handle all that in a more powerful script. Here is how the log looks like : x.x.237.134 - - [08/Apr/2011:14:43:09 +0200] "GET... x.x.50.15 - - [08/Apr/2011:14:43:09 +0200] "GET... [...] x.x.254.19 - - [28/Feb/2012:15:24:48 +0100] "GET...   • ffmpeg: video file played OK on Ubuntu, but no sound on XP

    I created a video clip using ffmpeg (vcodec: mpeg2video, acodec: AC3 5.1). The file can be played normally on Ubuntu, but when I play it on an XP machine, there is no sound. I can play AC3 files and other movies with AC3 sound. I already tried many codec packs and many players. When I compare the MediaInfo tab of the Properties window of the file with another playable movie, I see that the Audio Identifier of the audio stream in my file is 0x80 while it is 0x02 in the other movie. So I guess that's why players on XP can't recognize the audio codec. When I use an MKV container instead of MPEG (still mpeg2video codec), then the result is OK on both Ubuntu and XP (with the correct Audio ID). I really need MPEG though. Any idea?   • Need help finding a program to split PDFs based on text in specific areas

    I reeeeally need help with this. I work for a University in the admissions office and we get large PDFs of every document that an applicant uploads to us. What I need to do is split these PDFs into separate documents. Each of the separate documents has a head at the top of what type of document it is (Statement of Purpose, Transcript, etc). I found a program a few weeks ago that at first seemed to work great (A-PDF Splitter). It would look for every type of document in a combined PDF (eg. Statement of Purpose), and if it saw that heading it would create a new PDF named "ORIGINALFILENAME-Statement of Purpose". I soon discovered though that the program breaks for no reason on certain PDFs, and I have to take the time to take that PDF out of the queue and start the splitting over again (and we get 250 a day). I contacted their support and they basically told me I was SOL. So please, if you can find me a program to split PDFs into smaller PDFs based on if it finds particular text in a region, then I would be forever in dept to you. If I don't find one soon then I'm going to be spending the entire day splitting PDFs by hand and my boss isn't going to be happy.

    I seem to be missing drivers for my Gateway laptop MA7. I have looked in System-Admin-Hardware Drivers, but it does not show up in there.There are also no devices listed in Sound-Hardware. I'm guessing at this point that I don't have the driver installed.
