  Excel add-ins Data Explorer and GeoFlow work well together, mainly because they just work. Simple, fast, and powerful. I started Excel 2013, used Data Explorer to search for, examine, and then download latitude-longitude data and finally used GeoFlow to plot an interactive 3-D visualization. • Does NASA license the software that it develops?

  NASA provides a visualization software called Panoply. There is a Credits and Acknowledgments page that acknowledges and lists the licenses of software dependencies, but provides no information about its own license. I have looked at other software produced by NASA, including the source code for GISS and can not find any information about a licence. The closest information that I can find is in the FAQ for the global climate model EdGCM Global that says the code is in the "public domain" is it standard practice at NASA to release code into the public domain? are there exceptions? Can I assume that Panoply is public domain and can be used without restriction other than than those imposed by licenses of software dependencies? Is the absence of specific permission to reuse the code a concern (this issue was raised in the answer to a separate question) How common is this practice across government agencies?

  Adam Bien launched LightFish, a light-weight monitoring and visualization application for GlassFish. It comes with a introduction and a screencast to get you started. The tool provides monitoring information about threads and memory (such as heap size, thread count, peak thread count), transactions (commits and rollbacks), HTTP sessions, JDBC sessions, and even "paranormal activity". • How to get audio spectrum analysis?

  I need to find or create a tool that analyzes the audio spectrum of a sound file (like a .wav or .mp3). I need to output the "volume" or power of x number of frequency bands and output the data as text. This will be used to produce a visualization, a graphic equalizer like you'd see on a stereo. I am currently looking at python to do it. My question is are there some tools out there that would do this (signal processing), like math works or others? I don't have any experience with them so any advice would be appreciated.

• Can I virtualize a pre-installed Windows 7?

  I am considering buying a new computer with Windows 7 (64-bit) pre-installed. Would it be possible to install Ubuntu (preferably 64-bit) dual-boot on such a machine, and then, using VirtualBox / VMWare, etc. under Ubuntu, make a virtual machine that "points to" the existing Windows 7 OS (without making a copy of it)? Just to be clear... at the end of this process: I would have a machine that dual-booted both Windows 7 (64-bit) and Ubuntu (64-bit). If I choose to boot Ubuntu, I would then have the possibility of running a visualization of Windows 7 within Ubuntu. There would only be 1 copy of Windows 7 on the hard disk.

• Making video from 3D gaphics in OpenGL

  What are some of the preferred methods or libraries for creating video from an OpenGL graphics simulation? For example, I want to create a visualization(video) of an N-Body gravity simulation by rendering non-real-time OpenGL frames. The simulation is already coded, I just don't know how to convert it to video. EDIT: I am also interested in providing the described functionality: The user can adjust parameters including the time step between captured frames and then initiate the simulation. The user waits for the simulation to complete, and then can watch the results. The user is able to increase or decrease the playback speed of the simulation whereas in slow motion, more frames are used i.e., you see higher resolution time steps, and when the speed is increased, you see lower resolution time steps at a higher rate, but the frames per second flashing on the screen is constant.

Is this a legitimate use of eval? How could I get rid of eval? I want the user to be able to execute any function of the following forms: a x^i with a,i in R sin, cos, tan b^x with b in R any combination that you can get by adding (e.g. x^2 + x^3 + sin(x)), multiplying (e.g. sin(x)*x^2) or inserting (e.g. sin(x^2))

  I have a problem with the funnels in Google Analytics. So I have a e-commerce website that I want to track the user path to a purchase. I want GA to track if a user goes trough these steps [Item page]-[Purchase]-[Checkout]. I thought this could be done by funnels and my setup currently now consist of: Step 1: [Item page] (Required) Step 2: [Purchase] Goal: [Checkout] But when I go to the "Funnel Visualization Report" the following shows. [Item page] Visits: 150 [Purchase page] Visits: 170 [Checkout] Visits: 32 How can the [Purchase page] be higher than the [Item page]? I searched the internet over, and found something called Horizontal Funnels but this doesn't show the correct numbers, again the purchase and checkout steps are higher than the item page. So somehow it doesn't need step 1, to fulfill the funnels/goals. What am I doing wrong?

I have 2 years at college left. 2) If I am to pursue a career in game programming, and I select to go only with c++ and DirectX, is it enough? is assembly language necessary? 3) is Visual C++ or MFC dead? should I invest in it or not? 4) I am unable to find any reference book for Visual C++ 2008 or later (just like C++ the complete reference book) I need a book that covers the basic fundamentals and covers the most of the libraries etc.

• Which run-time charting tools produce the best time axes?

  I need to generate and embed a time series chart into an ASP.NET application. Most run-time charting tools generate poor time axes, especially if the time scale is dynamic ie the user may choose to view data over a time scale of days, weeks, months or years. I'm looking for recommended tools that can be integrated into my app. Two that show promise are Chart Director and Google's annotated timeline visualization. Both are quite different in their implementation and have pros/cons.

• Flash computeSpectrum() unsynchronized with audio

  I am using Flash's (CS4, AS3) SoundMixer.computeSpectrum to visualize a DFT of what supposed to be, according to the docs, whatever is currently being played. However, there is a considerable delay between the audio and the visualization (audio comes later). It seems that computeSpectrum captures whatever is on it's way to the buffer, and not to the speakers. Any cure for this?

• dotted stroke in <canvas>

  I guess it is not possible to set stroke property such as CSS which is quite easy. With CSS we have dashed, dotted, solid but on canvas when drawing lines/or strokes this doesn't seem to be an option. How have you implemented this? I've seen some examples but they are really long for such a silly function.   I'm a big fan of JGraphT, a Java library for graphs. Could anyone recommend a similar Java library for trees? Preferrably FOSS. What I need is a good API, preferrably typesafe with generics which allows modelling different kinds of trees (with some user data attached to verticies/edges) and run different algorithms and operations on these trees.
