    Hi, I'm trying to make an element draggable, like so: var element = $("<li id='test'>Hello</li>"); element.appendTo("#panelParent"); element.draggable("enable"); element.draggable("option", "connectToSortable", '#panelTarget'); element.draggable("option", "helper", 'clone'); element.draggable("option", "revert", 'invalid'); nothing happens when I try dragging this element. It works fine though if I embed the object in the page beforehand instead of trying to dynamically create the element. Any idea what I'm missing?   • How to dynamically set div size?

    I have a div container with a text that has been previously typed in by the user. I would like to adjust the size of the div to this text. I cannot have fixed size because I dont know the length of the text. If there is no size specified div takes the width of entire window. This cause some problems for me because I am using JQuery draggable plugin and the scrollbars appear immediately when the div is dragged. Any advice on that?

I'm associating each slider (several per page) with an hidden form so far, but I wonder if there's a "cleaner" way to do this. Related to the 1st question; I've some trouble with the script: var score = $(this).slider( "option", "value" ); $(this).closest("input[type=='hidden']").val(score); It doesn't set the value of the hidden input.   • Integrating jQuery autocomplete with Google site search

    I have a bit of an odd situation. I have to implement search on a public facing website -but, that search must be able to search both web pages and have an autocomplete/suggestion functionality that comes from a list of terms that are in a DB table. So, I'm wondering a couple things: 1) should I be looking at Google search and jQuery autocomplete? 2) is there something else I should be looking at instead? 3) if this is the right path to be heading down are the enough pointers on implementation? The crux of my problem is that the terms that I need to use for the autocomplete/suggest functionality reside within a database and not on the webpages. So, I thought Google would be appropriate for search the webpages and that I could sort of fill in the blanks so to speak with these terms from the DB. I'm going to say that there are roughly 20-40,000 terms or so that need autocomplete. But that is really just a very rough guess -it could be less. I'm open to ideas and not really married to any particular solution. However, I will admit to liking the ideas of offloading the search to Google. I hear they have a good algorithm ;) Any ideas, thoughts, or leads are greatly appreciated!

  • How can I connect DLNA devices through NAT?

    I have a Windows 7 PC running Serviio as a DLNA server. I have a Samsung I9100G running Skifta as a DLNA renderer (client). My network topology: At the moment, I can connect and watch my videos fine if the phone is on router #2. The server is on a wired network with #2. Router #1 is 192.168.1.1, router #2 is 192.168.2.1 (192.168.1.2) and router #3 is 192.168.3.1 (192.168.1.3). In other words, each router has its own subnet, using NAT - their "modem" port is connected with a "LAN" port on the modem/router 1. What I want to do is be able to connect to the DLNA server if the renderer is connected to router #1/#3 - #1 is on the WAN side of #2, while #3 is even further separated. I'll settle for just #1 working, though. Normally, I would just forward the appropriate ports, and everything would work fine. However, (apparently) DLNA uses UPnP, which I am unfamiliar with. I tried enabling UPnP on router #2, but that did not seem not change anything. It's a Belkin F5D7230-4 6000 - there's reported issues with UPnP on F5D7230-4 7000. UPnP is already enabled on router #1 - a Billion BiPAC 7700N. I've also tried the built in DLNA renderer/server/controller on my phone, Samsung AllShare. It can see the server on router #2 and browse files, but has issues playing or downloading them. It also can't see the server on the other two networks. I'm currently using Skifta/s "local" mode. "Remote" mode requires an account, which I don't really want to create if not necessary. Is it possible too do what I'm trying to do? If no, are there workarounds? If yes, how do I do it? Is my server the issue? The renderer (client)? The router(s)? My method? I can change just about anything except the routers.

  • Changing externally visible IP on a multi-IP router?

    I work at a public library and I'm trying to configure OCLC's EzProxy software. I've run into a problem and I think it's related to our network config. I'm punching above my weight here a little so I need some help. I think I'm trying to configure a 1:1 NAT, but not sure how or if our hardware supports it. The EzProxy machine is on an internet line which supports multiple external IPs. Our router is a Billion BiGuard30. There's another server on this line, let's say its IP is x.x.x.9. The EzProxy machine is x.x.x.11 I've set up port forwarding from x.x.x.11 on the http ports to the EzProxy machine. Trying to browse to x.x.x.11 from an external PC works fine - we get to the EzProxy page we are serving. However, if we go to something like WhatIsMyIP from the EzProxy machine, it says that its IP is x.x.x.9. This causes problems with our user authentication software. How do we make the rest of the internet see that the machine is x.x.x.11? There doesnt seem to be any "outbound port forwarding" on the Billion router, nor is there any "1:1 NAT" options in its config webpage. The EzProxy machine is running Ubuntu 12.04, if that helps.

    EDIT: This problem was resolved by my ISP - had to do with damaged fiber in one of their locations. Thanks to everyone that helped. Not sure if this is the right site (I'm a StackOverflow user) so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm having trouble connecting to certain sites on any of the 3 machines that are on my LAN. The following sites are returning "Problem Loading Page - The connection has timed out" Sourceforge.net CNet.com Microsoft.com OpenDNS.com even my company's webiste I was worried about possible malware/virus, but I don't think that is the case (given the inability to access my company's site and the fact that all 3 machines are having the same issues.) I've tried with IE8, FF, and Chrome I have reset my router (WRT54G) and my machine(s) multiple times. EDIT: It is also worth noting that this page spins constantly and no avatars show up (I'm assuming it is trying to access gravatar.com with no success.) EDIT: I have the same issues directly connected to the modem. So, any router config is probably not the issue I'm a programmer, not a network guy - any ideas?

  • VLAN across a router to give wireless access to remote sites?

    I've been looking online for this answer, but getting conflicting information. I was under the impression that you couldn't use a VLAN across a router, but maybe it's possible (according to some documentation I see online)? I was hoping someone could clear it up for me. Here's what I'm working with: We have a remote site with a handful of users. We recently gave them an access point (Cisco 1142n) for internal wireless. It's plugged into a switch and working fine (getting IPs from the same DHCP scope as the wired users are getting). Private wireless is set on VL50. At the home office we have private wireless for our internal network working and on VL50, with a test VLAN setup for VL60, which points to our DSL line for the time being. Both private and public wireless works fine internally (not crossing a router). VL50 is named the same at both sites for consistency in naming. If we wanted to give the remote site access to the public wireless (VL60), would that be possible across the routers? For more information, currently the site is connected to the home office via a T1 connection, Cisco routers on both ends. I didn't think it was possible due to the nature of VLANS being layer 2. But, I am from from an expert on this and would appreciate any instruction as to the actual truth of the matter. The end result I'm going for is, how to get our remote sites access to a public (outside) connection along with their private connection, without actually having a DSL (or similar type line) dropped at their location?   • How much detail is in a good UI regression test?

    We use a detailed step-by-step user-interface regression test for our commercial web application. It has a "backbone" test for the most used / most important parts of the system, with optional tests for specific areas of functionality. Using this plan has definitely helped us ensure high quality software. But, having very specific tests can be counter-productive. The tester concentrates on following the test and will completely miss usability issues, or not notice fairly obvious problems such as the bottom part of a page that is missing. By contrast, some of the best UI testing happens when building a demo of a new feature. I often do my own best testing by pretending to demonstrate the system to an imaginary prospect. Yet when I tell the testers, "Just demonstrate the system to yourself" they don't cover nearly as much functionality as they do with a detailed point-by-point test. I'm repeatedly asked to provide more and more detail in the test plan so that a new untrained tester can test with it without asking any questions. Yet details seem to be counter-productive. How much detail do you put in a regression test to make it effective? What techniques make the tester to focus more on the system than on checking off items on the test?

  • What is the correct UI interface to learn for creating Windows phone 8 apps? [closed]

    I am a veteran Delphi 6 programmer transitioning to C# development. My first project is a open source library that will have a minimal user interface since it is meant to be used as a Component primarily on desktop PCs running Visual Studio. My next project is going to be a Windows 8 phone app and I intend for that platform to be my primary focus for future C# development, not the desktop. My concern is that I waste as little time as possible learning a presentation framework that will benefit or distract me from writing Windows 8 phone apps. The plethora of framework names I have already encountered include, WinForms, WPF (Windows Presentation Framework), Silverlight, Silverlight Mobile, Metro and there may be others. Given my goal outlined in the first paragraph above, I have a few questions: 1) Which of the frameworks should I use for the small amount of UI work I will do with the desktop Component project that will help me the most, or hurt me the least, when I move to Windows 8 phone app development? 2) Which is the correct framework to study for developing Windows 8 phone apps? 3) Any awesome tutorials, resources or books you have run into targeted towards veteran programmers from other platforms? I read about the Portable Library Tools on this Stack Overflow thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5522355/windows-phone-7-wpf-sharing-a-codebase But the reply by Simon Guindon seemed to indicate to me that it's not the best solution for writing a competitive Windows 8 phone app.

  • How can I choose a Webapp UI Design/dev collaborative tool?

    I am working with a team that's building a webapp for internal use in an enterprise. It's basically a workflow app at heart, where there's a single "request". Each request flows through various stages, and at each stage, there's a person or role that is responsible for moving the request to the next stage. "Moving" the request to the next stage might involve adding more data, validating things, gathering input from some external source and correlating it to the data in the request, and so on. The workflow engine has been selected. The UI for the various roles and stakeholders is being designed. We have a distributed group of stakeholders. I'd like to employ a collaborative design/dev effort, where devs can produce and stand-up mockups or even working prototypes, then solicit feedback on those things. In a centralized team this could be done via design review meetings, with everyone gathered round a screen projector. That just is not going to work for us. So what I'd like is an app that can help with this. Any recommendations on apps or how to choose?

  • How to modify the style of jQuery DatePicker's disabled dates?

    Given this page: http://jqueryui.com/demos/datepicker/#min-max And viewing its source: http://jqueryui.com/themeroller/css/parseTheme.css.php I can change the following line (using Chrome's inspect element feature) and see those changes reflected: .ui-state-disabled, .ui-widget-content .ui-state-disabled { opacity: .35; filter:Alpha(Opacity=35); background-image: none; } However, if I try to override my own test page with something like... .ui-state-disabled, .ui-widget-content .ui-state-disabled { opacity: .99 !important; filter:Alpha(Opacity=99) !important; background-image: none !important; color:Red !important; } ...I do not see my changes reflected in the calendar. I can make other changes in my own test page and those are reflected for other classes in the datepicker. So, I'm not having any kind of path issue to the .js or .css files. What am I missing here? UPDATE/SOLUTION Firebug to the rescue...this took care of my styling needs: .ui-datepicker-week-end{color: #c0c0c0 !important;} div#ui-datepicker-div.ui-datepicker{color: #c0c0c0;} div#ui-datepicker-div.ui-datepicker:hover{cursor: default important;} .ui-datepicker-calendar th{color: #222222 !important;}
