    In MVC, should each model be a globally accessible singleton accessible to any view/controller? Or should the models be singletons that are dependency injected into any component that requires them? Or should a new model instance be created for each component that needs one, in which case events would be used to propagate changes across model instances of the same class?

  • Spring MVC: easiest way to see incoming requests

    I am debugging a Spring MVC (3.0) app, deployed on tomcat. I want to see in my console or log files all the incoming requests. Including 404s, both generated by my app or by spring because it didn't find an appropriate controller. I'd like to see something like this: GET /index.html GET /img/logo.png GET /js/a.js GET /style/b.css POST /ajax/dothis?blah=yes POST /ajax/dothat?foo=np GET /nextpage.html ... What is the easiest way to see that.

    How do I cache an individual user control with ASP.NET MVC? I also need the VaryByParam etc support that usually comes with ASPX Output Caching. I don't want to cache the entire action though, only one of my user controls in the view. An example would be nice :) Thank you!

    HI there I was wondering if there is a better way of testing that a view has rendered in MVC. I was thinking perhaps I should render the view to a string but perhaps there are simpler methods? Basically what I want to know if that the view for a given action has rendered without errors I m already testing the view model but I want to see that rendering the view giving a correct ViewData.Model works

    Hi guys, I have a View with a Master Page. The user control makes use of a Model: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<BudgieMoneySite.Models.SiteUserLoginModel>" %> This user control is shown on all screens (Part of the Master Page). If the user is logged in, it shows a certain text, and if the user isn't logged in, it offers a login box. That is working OK. Now, I am adding my first functional screen. So I created a new view... and, well, i generated the basic view code for me when I selected the controller method, and said 'Create View'. My Controller has this code: public ActionResult Transactions() { List<AccountTransactionDetails> trans = GetTransactions(); return View(trans); } private List<AccountTransactionDetails> GetTransactions() { List<AccountTransactionDto> trans = Services.TransactionServices.GetTransactions(); List<AccountTransactionDetails> reply = new List<AccountTransactionDetails>(); foreach(var t in trans) { AccountTransactionDetails a = new AccountTransactionDetails(); foreach (var line in a.Transactions) { AccountTransactionLine l = new AccountTransactionLine(); l.Amount = line.Amount; l.SubCategory = line.SubCategory; l.SubCategoryId = line.SubCategoryId; a.Transactions.Add(l); } reply.Add(a); } return reply; } So, my view was generated with this: <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Views/Shared/Site.Master" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage<System.Collections.Generic.List<BudgieMoneySite.Models.AccountTransactionDetails>>" %> Found <%=Model.Count() % Transactions. All I want to show for now is the number of records I will be displaying. When I run it, I get an error: "The model item passed into the dictionary is of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List`1[BudgieMoneySite.Models.AccountTransactionDetails]', but this dictionary requires a model item of type 'BudgieMoneySite.Models.SiteUserLoginModel'." It looks like the user control is being rendered first, and as the Model from the controller is my List<, it's breaking! What am I doing wrong?

    I'm creating a custom ActionResult class and I need it to be able to operate on a UserControl. All of the examples I've found so far pass in the full path like so: return MyResult("~/ControllerName/UserControlName.ascx", myModel); But I'd like it to operate the same way as calling View(), i.e. I just pass in the name and MVC determines the correct route: return MyResult("UserControlName", myModel); Is there a way I can find out the correct route to the control without specifying it manually?

    Hello guys, I would like to ask what is the ideal folder structure for a MVC framework that should be able to support multiple installations. For example, I install xyz framework and i run two or more sites based on this single installation of xyz framework rather than installing the framework for each site. This is probably done in Codeigniter too but i don't know much about CodeIgniter, so i need your suggestions. I know some of you might even have better idea than what is done by CodeIgniter, so please share.

  • User roles - why not store in session?

    I'm porting an ASP.NET application to MVC and need to store two items relating to an authenitcated user: a list of roles and a list of visible item IDs, to determine what the user can or cannot see. We've used WSE with a web service in the past and this made things unbelievably complex and impossible to debug properly. Now we're ditching the web service I was looking foward to drastically simplifying the solution simply to store these things in the session. A colleague suggested using the roles and membership providers but on looking into this I've found a number of problems: a) It suffers from similar but different problems to WSE in that it has to be used in a very constrained way maing it tricky even to write tests; b) The only caching option for the RolesProvider is based on cookies which we've rejected on security grounds; c) It introduces no end of complications and extra unwanted baggage; All we want to do, in a nutshell, is store two string variables in a user's session or something equivalent in a secure way and refer to them when we need to. What seems to be a ten minute job has so far taken several days of investigation and to compound the problem we have now discovered that session IDs can apparently be faked, see http://blogs.sans.org/appsecstreetfighter/2009/06/14/session-attacks-and-aspnet-part-1/ I'm left thinking there is no easy way to do this very simple job, but I find that impossible to believe. Could anyone: a) provide simple information on how to make ASP.NET MVC sessions secure as I always believed they were? b) suggest another simple way to store these two string variables for a logged in user's roles etc. without having to replace one complex nightmare with another as described above?     I'm completely new to JQuery and MVC. I'm working on a pet project that uses both to learn them and I've hit my first snag. I have a date field and I want to add the JQuery datepicker to the UI. Here is what I have done: Added <script src="../../Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> to the site.master Inside my Create.aspx (View), I have <asp:Content ID="Create" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2> Create a Task</h2> <% Html.RenderPartial("TaskForm"); %> </asp:Content> and inside "TaskForm" (a user control) I have: <label for="dDueDate"> Due Date</label> <%= Html.TextBox("dDueDate",(Model.Task.TaskID > 0 ? string.Format("{0:g}",Model.Task.DueDate) : DateTime.Today.ToString("MM/dd/yyyy"))) %> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $("#dDueDate").datepicker(); }); </script> As you can see, the above checks to see if a task has an id 0 (we're not creating a new one) if it does, it uses the date on the task, if not it defaults to today. I would expect the datepicker UI element to show up, but instead I get: "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method" on the $("#dDueDate").datepicker(); Ideas? It is probably a very simple mistake, so don't over-analyze. As I said, this is the first time I've dealt with MVC or JQuery so I'm lost as to where to start.

    Hello Guys, I'm trying to figure how to config StructureMap for ASP.NET MVC3 I've already using NuGet and I notice that it creates App_Start Folder with a cs file named as StructuremapMVC, so I check it and notice that is the same code but simplified that will be written manually on App_Start section placed on Global.asax... My Question is when I inject some IoC on my Controllers as the follow (I use this pattern : Entity Framework 4 CTP 4 / CTP 5 Generic Repository Pattern and Unit Testable) : private readonly IAsambleaRepository _aRep; private readonly IUnitOfWork _uOw; public AsambleaController(IAsambleaRepository aRep, IUnitOfWork uOw) { _aRep = aRep; this._uOw = uOw; } public ActionResult List(string period) { var rs = _aRep.ByPeriodo(period).ToList<Asamblea>(); return View(); } I got an Exception Exception Details: System.MissingMethodException: No parameterless constructor defined for this object.

(1) A weak-typed view: Index.aspx <% Html.RenderPartial("ArticalList", ViewData["AllArticals"] as List<Artical>); %> (2) A strong-typed partical view: ArticalList.ascx <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<List<Artical>>" %> <% foreach (Artical a in Model) { %> <%= Html.ActionLink(a.Title, "About", new { id = a.ID })%><br /> <%} %> (3) Here is the HomeController.cs public ActionResult Index() { ViewData["AllArticals"] = Artical.GetArticals(); return View(); } public ActionResult ArticalList() { return PartialView(Artical.GetArticals()); } Sorry I'm using a Web-Form "angle", because if I'm using a Web-Form, when I visit Index.aspx, rendering ArticalList.ascx will call public ActionResult ArticalList(). But here I need to write Artical.GetArticals() twice in two actions. How can I put them in one?
