• Is there any functional difference between immutable value types and immutable reference types?

  Value types are types which do not have an identity. When one variable is modified, other instances are not. Using Javascript syntax as an example, here is how a value type works. var foo = { a: 42 }; var bar = foo; bar.a = 0; // foo.a is still 42 Reference types are types which do have an identity. When one variable is modified, other instances are as well. Here is how a reference type works. var foo = { a: 42 }; var bar = foo; bar.a = 0; // foo.a is now 0 Note how the example uses mutatable objects to show the difference. If the objects were immutable, you couldn't do that, so that kind of testing for value/reference types doesn't work. Is there any functional difference between immutable value types and immutable reference types? Is there any algorithm that can tell the difference between a reference type and a value type if they are immutable? Reflection is cheating. I'm wondering this mostly out of curiosity.

• Commands don't have permission when using absolute path

  I have folders set up this way: /srv/samba/video getfacl /srv/samba/video # file: srv/samba/video # owner: root # group: nogroup user::rwx group::--- group:sambaclients:rwx group:deluge:rwx mask::rwx other::--- default:user::rwx default:group::--- default:group:sambaclients:rwx default:group:deluge:rwx default:mask::rwx default:other::--- That means, user deluge has rwx to folder /srv/samba/video. However, when running command as user deluge, I am getting weird permission errors. When in folder /srv/samba/video: sudo -u deluge mkdir foo works flawlessly. But when using absolute path: sudo -u deluge mkdir /srv/samba/video/foo I am getting permission denied. When running sudo -u deluge id, I get output uid=113(deluge) gid=124(deluge) skupiny=124(deluge) which shows that user deluge is indeed in group deluge. Also, the behavior was the same when I gave the permissions also to user deluge not just group deluge. When executing as non-system user, it does work. The reason that I want to use absolute paths is that I am using automatically triggered post-download script which extracts some files into the folder. I have spent way too many hours to solve this problem myself. mkdir isn't the only command that fails, touch is doing the same thing, so I suspect that it's not mkdir's fault. If you need more info, I will try to put it in here, just ask. Thanx in advance. Edit: It seems that the root of the problem is acl set on perent folder /srv/samba, which indeed does not grant permissions to deluge (but neither denies it). getfacl /srv/samba # file: srv/samba # owner: root # group: nogroup user::rwx group::--- group:sambaclients:rwx mask::rwx other::--- default:user::rwx default:group::--- default:group:sambaclients:rwx default:mask::rwx default:other::--- If I grant the permission also to this folder, it suddenly starts to work so I believe that the acl on /srv/samba is somehow denying the permissions to deluge. So the question is: how do I set acl to both /srv/samba and /srv/samba/video so that sambaclients have access to whole /srv/samba and subdirectories and deluge has access only to /srv/samba/video and subdirectories?

• Booting Ubuntu 12.04 in Unity the Windows Theme & Icon Theme reversed back to and always locked to Ubuntu default

  I did set up last year Faience-Ocre as my Icon Theme and Adwaita Cupertino L Unity as my Windows Theme (the GTK+ thme was unchanged to Adwaita (default)). It has worked perfectly well until 3 days ago when starting my PC I saw the Ubuntu default showing up for Windows & Icon Theme. I noticed that at start-up the disk access LED is not lit up continuously as before but at moment stops reading for a few seconds (up to 15 s) then complete the disk reading process. When all was working well this LED would lit up continuously. Another thing is that GNOME applications are as well not working well as previously Nautilus and Gedit now don't use the global menu in the system bar but a local window menu. Nautilus - Nemo before the incident Nautilus - Nemo now ... I did open dconf to check the desktop settings in org-gnome-desktop-wm-preferences and everything is looking good. When I change the settings in the app Advanced Settings in the Theme folder I see the respective value changing in dconf. However, there is no change on my desktop. It looks like it's crippled and GNOME related. [Update 1]: I have the same defect as referenced @ ubuntu theme suddenly changed to default and it's not coming back! instead of my GTK theme I get a classic, Windows-95-like grayish theme ... However one of the solution mentionned: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/06/fix-ubuntu-linux-mint-theme-changing-to.html is not working at all, even for 20 s up to 60 s delay.

  Adding a value to a 'datetime' column caused overflow. Came across this error today. So thought of posting the same. Whenever you try to do a dateadd like this  dateadd(mm,12,datefield) you might face this error if the value in your records in the datefield is not a valid date or if u add some months or date to this value and the output of that will exceed the date range In my case i was just thinking what would be the error here. But unfortunately there was some data in the table which was there with the value (Ex:date of joining column) 1-1-9999 So my sql statement has tried to add 12 months to this and it had caused this error.

• How do I restore default menu/top panel text color in Gnome Classic?

  The default text/icon color in my top panel has changed from white to a very dark grey, making my menus virtually unreadable against the black of the Ambiance theme. This includes even the login screen menu. I used Gnome Tweak to change the theme to Adwaita, but while some text has gone light grey (e.g. Date/Time), the login menu text remains dark grey, as do most icons (e.g. dropbox, wireless, battery indicator...) in the top panel after I log in. I tried deleting the top panel altogether but the option of deleting under Super + Alt + Right Click is blocked off. I tried running a panel from the terminal, but it came up in strange colors too, plus icons had moved around and some parts of the panel were opaque and other parts transparent. Deleting the panel wouldn't solve the basic problem anyway, as my login menu would still be very dark grey and unreadable against the default (black) Ambiance background. I would like to keep Ambiance but I want to reset the color to default (white) again. Can anyone help me?

• JBoss Seam: In ScopeType.PAGE I get: java.lang.IllegalStateException: No conversation context active

  Hi all, I have a page-scoped component, which has an instance variable List with data, which I display in a datatable. This datatable has pagination, sorting and filtering. The first time gate into the page, I get this appended in my URL: ?conversationId=97. The page works correctly, and when I change datatable pages no now component is created. After a minute or two, and at seamingly random time, I get an exception saying that there is no context. I have not used @Create in my code or my navigation files. So, I have two questions: Why do I get this suffix in my URL? Why did a conversation start? Why the exception? The component is scoped to PAGE. If I received an exception, it should not be related to a conversation. Right? Or is the conversation the exception is referring a temporary conversation? Cheers!   I noticed in Firefox when viewing the cookies that the values I am saving are not encrypted. The CakePHP Book states that values are encrypted by default on write(). I can't seem to find any gotchas in the doc Anyone else experience this problem? I am sure I am missing something.. Would it matter that the value being set is a integer?

  Hi, I have made a static html page (called start.jsp) containing a form where the user select 2 date ranges and this form has date pickers for those text boxes. When the user submits the form, it should take them to the BIRT report that I have designed. It SHOULD pass the 2 parameters that my report needs (start date and end date). Here is the querystring that gets appended to the URL birt-viewer/run__report=Business_Activity_Monitoring.rptdesign &FilterStartDate=2000-01-01&FilterEndDate=2009-01-01 I get an invalid date error: org.eclipse.birt.report.exception.ViewerValidationException: The parameter "FilterStartDate" is invalid. The value "06-08-2010" is invalid with the type "dateTime". How is it that if I remove the querystring completely, then BIRT will prompt me to enter the start date and end date (screenshot attached). I enter the exact same data that the form tries to send and it works!? This proves that my date string is correctly formatted but yet it will not accept them if they are sent to the BIRT report via the querystring? Seems like it has a problem with the fact that its a string in the first place. I have correctly set up these report parameters in my BIRT report. I have also tried changing them by specifying the "Format as" value to be a "custom" YYYY-MM-dd but this didnt work. Is it even possible to send date parameters to a birt report via querystring? Im guessing the solution will involve converting these strings to dates within the birt report's "script" tab. but I dont know how to access querystring variables from here or how to set report parameter variables.   I have the following two classes: public class Address { public string AddressLine1 { get; set; } public string AddressLine2 { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } public string State { get; set; } public string Zip { get; set; } } public class Employee { public string FirstName { get; set; } public string MiddleName { get; set; } public string LastName { get; set; } public Address EmployeeAddress { get; set; } } I have an instance of the employee class as follows: var emp1Address = new Address(); emp1Address.AddressLine1 = "Microsoft Corporation"; emp1Address.AddressLine2 = "One Microsoft Way"; emp1Address.City = "Redmond"; emp1Address.State = "WA"; emp1Address.Zip = "98052-6399"; var emp1 = new Employee(); emp1.FirstName = "Bill"; emp1.LastName = "Gates"; emp1.EmployeeAddress = emp1Address; I have a method which gets the property value based on the property name as follows: public object GetPropertyValue(object obj ,string propertyName) { var objType = obj.GetType(); var prop = objType.GetProperty(propertyName); return prop.GetValue(obj, null); } The above method works fine for calls like GetPropertyValue(emp1, "FirstName") but if I try GetPropertyValue(emp1, "Address.AddressLine1") it throws an exception because objType.GetProperty(propertyName); is not able to locate the nested object property value. Is there a way to fix this?

• Mathematically Find Max Value without Conditional Comparison

  ----------Updated ------------ codymanix and moonshadow have been a big help thus far. I was able to solve my problem using the equations and instead of using right shift I divided by 29. Because with 32bits signed 2^31 = overflows to 29. Which works! Prototype in PHP $r = $x - (($x - $y) & (($x - $y) / (29))); Actual code for LEADS (you can only do one math function PER LINE!!! AHHHH!!!) DERIVDE1 = IMAGE1 - IMAGE2; DERIVED2 = DERIVED1 / 29; DERIVED3 = DERIVED1 AND DERIVED2; MAX = IMAGE1 - DERIVED3; ----------Original Question----------- I don't think this is quite possible with my application's limitations but I figured it's worth a shot to ask. I'll try to make this simple. I need to find the max values between two numbers without being able to use a IF or any conditional statement. In order to find the the MAX values I can only perform the following functions Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Add, NOT, AND ,OR Let's say I have two numbers A = 60; B = 50; Now if A is always greater than B it would be simple to find the max value MAX = (A - B) + B; ex. 10 = (60 - 50) 10 + 50 = 60 = MAX Problem is A is not always greater than B. I cannot perform ABS, MAX, MIN or conditional checks with the scripting applicaiton I am using. Is there any way possible using the limited operation above to find a value VERY close to the max?
