• Cloning my Windows boot drive--Windows hangs on booting off new drive.

  I copied my Windows XP partition to a new drive using GParted live CD (using the GUI). I made sure to flag it as boot, and then used my XP disc to enter Recovery Console and ran fixboot and fixmbr on it. Now, it will boot up to the Windows flash screen, but hangs at that point. Any suggestions on how to proceed? I am just trying to come up with a quick way to clone my system and make the drive bootable, and gParted seemed like the easiest way, but now I've been working on it for over an hour.

• How can I display host name on windows desktop

  I do a lot of work on Windows Server 2008 remote desktops and often lose track of which host I am currently logged on to. Is there a way of displaying (without installing any non-standard apps) the host name or IP address of the host I am connected to in either the wallpaper or the notification area? I tried creating files in the desktop with the name of the machine - but my roaming profile shows the same set of desktop files on every machine, so that was scuppered. Duh! In shell windows this is easy: just set the prompt to display the host name. Surely there is a simple way of doing the same for the graphical desktop.

• Remotely start VNC server on computer with no Admin password

  I'm trying to remotely access a particular computer of mine and it seems that VNC has stopped. I can tell that the computer is still running because I can VNC into another machine on the same network and can see my target machine under the Network section in Windows Explorer and can also ping it succesfully. To summarize: I own the target computer I am currently too far to physically access it Remote Desktop Connection feature of Windows is not enabled The computer normally runs a VNC server, but it seems to have stopped The computer is definitely on and connected to the network The computer has no password on the Admin account I can VNC into other computers on the same LAN Given these conditions how can I get into the target to open VNC server, or even just reboot the target (VNC should open on startup)? I have tried PsExec and get "access is denied", and also tried "Connect to another computer.." from the Computer Management console and also get "access is denied".

• Is there any chance that my data will get silently corrupted with a robocopy SMB network transfer?

  I'm setting up a NAS box for the first time. At the moment, I have most of my data backed up to a few local hard drives, and I intend to transfer all the data to my NAS over ethernet once the RAID array is setup. Since this is all happening over the network, I'm a bit worried about my data getting corrupted silently during transfer. From what I understand, data generally doesn't get corrupted without notice on local transfers because a checksum is performed at some point by the drive or the OS. (This could be totally wrong.) Does the same thing happen with SMB, or is it up to the transferrer to check the integrity of their data? And if it doesn't happen with SMB, is there a protocol that does ensure data integrity? I know that rsync can checksum a transfer, but I'm on Windows and I already have a robocopy configuration that I like. Will my data be safe or do I have to use an external checksum tool to make sure?

• Rsync fails for files that start with underscore when destination is zfs

  everyone. I'm using rsync3.1.0pre1 on Mac OS X 10.8.5, and am trying to rsync one folder to another. The destination is a ZFS volume mounted via SMB. The problem I'm having is that files that start with underscore (e.g., '_filename.jpg') are not being successfully synced to the destination. I get the following error message: rsync: mkstemp "/path/to/destination/._filename.jpg.NUgYJw" failed: Permission denied (13) In this case, '_filename.jpg' does not make it to the destination. I understand that rsync creates hidden, temporary files at the destination which are preceded with '.' and have a random file extension appended on the end. But the original filename starts with '', not '.', and I haven't asked rsync to copy extended attributes / resource forks over (unless it always does it). The rsync command I'm using is: rsync -avE --exclude='.DS_Store' --exclude '.Trash' --exclude 'Thumbs.db' --exclude '._*' --delete /source/ /destination/ Has anyone found a way around this problem?   I have a core Hyper-V Server 2012 that I am remotely managing from a Windows 8 client. I can connect in Hyper-V Manager, Server Manager, and MMC. However, I don't understand how I can manage the physical hard drive (for ex, deleting vhdx files, creating folders, etc) from my Windows 8 client. I tried to attach the remote share as follows: q: \\MyServer\c$ It said command completed successfully, but I don't see the drive on my client's Explorer. • Amazon S3: allow users to upload on a restricted basis (per bucket maybe)?

  Hi there, I'm thinking about signing up to the Amazon S3 storage service. What I want to do is create a service where other people can register their own bucket with a certain amount of storage. These users will install my software, which then uploads their files. Of course, the users may only upload what they have paid for. For this to work I would like to create a separate bucket for each customer, each with its own properties. Question 1: is this possible with the API? How? This means that the installed software must have the rights needed to upload to my Amazon S3 account. Question 2: can I create individual authentication IDs for each bucket or customer, so that they can only upload with restrictions I have set? Thanks in advance.

• Suggestions for hosted file sharing services

  Before I pose my question, I will give some insight as per my scenario: I work for a small business (cost is an important factor) Our bandwidth is limited and would not support an in-house FTP server We need to share files (mostly pdf, inDesign, Illustrator documents) to our clients, and as we expand, we are finding that our current locally-hosted FTP solution is too slow and is becoming a detriment to our sales team. What we need is a remotely hosted solution to share files with our clients, specifically with the following features: Greater than 100gb of secure storage The Ability to distribute unique log in credentials to clients, granting access to a personalized directory or folder, while limiting access to other files on the server. A relatively simple web-based UI for clients with limited computer knowledge We have considered a dedicated remote server, and web-based services (box.net, yousendit.com, onehub.com, filesanywhere.com) but I am unsure as per the direction we should be taking - have I left another solution out? The computer on that network drive is running Windows XP. I want to back up data on Windows 7. How would I do so? I'd like something similar to Mac OS X' time machine. So copy of data every hour, day, week. Then thinning out, data gets deleted automatically as time goes by. For example, the data for last day is kept as hourly snapshots. For last week, as daily snapshots every day. And for last month as weekly snapshots. How can I achieve this?

• Wondering about the Windows 7 serial number my laptop has, and its uses.

  So that's the serial number of my pre-installed windows copy, I take it. But am I allowed to use it again when, say, I don't know, my system gets crippled by a sneaky virus? • time on files differ by 1 sec. FAIL Robocopy sync

  I am trying to use Robocopy to sync (/IMG) a folder on my PC and a shared network drive. The problem is that the file attributes differ by 1 sec on both locations (creation,modified and access). So every time I run robocopy, it syncs the file again... BTW, problem is the same if I delete the target file and robocopy it from new... still, new file has 1 sec different properties. Env Details: Source: Win 7 64 bit Target: WD My Book World Edition NAS 1TB which takes its time from online NTP pool.ntp.org (I don't know if file system is FAT or not)

• Automatize uploading the YouTube

  Here's the problem: I would like to keep lots of home made videos. Of course, they are subject to being lost, or somebody could steal the the computer, or water or fire could destroy them. Secondly, I have to plug in my hard drive every time I want to watch something, which I find slow and cumbersome. I was thinking that perhaps I could upload the videos to Youtube with the privacy set to invite only and then delete the video from the hard drive automatically. Could this be done?

• Using Dropbox API instead of a FTP server.

  This is a small aplication scenario. Usually, when you have to do some backups of source code/database on your server, you use a second ftp server, a cronjob to tar.gz your db dumps and source files, and send this file to your ftp server from your application server. Dropbox created an API to use it's infrastrucutre. Since they provide 2gb for free accounts, I thought about being able to upload to it instead of a ftp server. So, if you do some freelance work, you can create a free account for each client and use this approach, maybe encrypting the files you send. You even gain a revision for each sent file, like a revison control system, for free, from the last 30 days. What do you think of this approach? Is it possible? And, more importantly: what are the security risks involved? (That's why I'm asking this on serverfault, since this POV from sysadmins will be more accurate). Thanks!

  I have a custom Powershell module that I wrote for various tasks. Now I want to craft a workflow whose activities will use commands from the module. Here's my test workflow: workflow New-TestWorkflow{ InlineScript { Import-Module custom.ps1 New-CommandFromTheModule } } Then I run the workflow with: New-TestWorkflow -PSComputerName remoteComputer When I do this, the import fails because it can't find the module. I imagine this is because the workflow is executing on the remote machine, where my module does not exist. I can see myself running this across many machines so I'd really rather not have to install this module and maintain it on all of the machines. Is there some way to have my module in a central place and use it in workflows?

• RDP - Sharing shortcuts and/or toolbars

  I often have to work across several virtual machines through RDP. I used to work with Terminals, and recently changed to mRemote NG. As of now, I have a checklist that I run on each new VM I create, in order to populate the desktop with the shortcuts and apps that I use regularly. Then, I create a checkpoint and use that when I need to revert to a "clean" machine. However, it's not always practical, and the VMs I have to use are not always created by me so that checkpoint is not always available. I know that I could use a template when creating the VM, but it doesn't solve the problem when I have to use VMs that I do not own. Does anyone know of a way to setup one set of shortcuts/apps and be able to launch them on a remote desktop connection easily? Kind of like a toolbar that is present wherever I'm logged on...

• Will 5 Terabyte NAS drive be compatible with Windows XP SP3 32 bit?

  (NOTE: The operating system (in this case Windows XP SP3 32 bit) we are using is not a choice.) I am trying to setup a short term storage device. First, I found a large 5 Terabyte NAS drive that would IMO fulfill my storage requirements. Second, I also found that Windows XP seems to have a hard drive size limit (see 'Is there a limit to the size of a hard drive for Windows XP pre-SP1?'): XP should handle up to 2 TB per volume after the service packs are applied. You are correct. There was a 137gb limit on the orginal pre service pack windows xp. This was addressed/fixed in SP1. My question is, will my Windows XP SP3 32 bit machine see the 5 Terabyte NAS and be able to read/write properly to the NAS drive?

  I've got a low-end machine for testing our software. It needs to be tested under various versions of Windows, so I was planning installing each one on its own partition. Then I realized that after testing our software, I'd want to roll back to the previous, clean state. I don't want to use any virtualization software because it tends to interfere with the workings of our app. That said, what's the best way to achieve my goal? Norton Ghost? Edit: I work for a pretty monstrously huge organization. Money is no object here (and sometimes, if the wrong people get wind of it, "open source" software is bad).

I'm primarily an Mac admin working in a college, but I have recently taken over responsibility for about 30 student workstations running Windows 7. For the Macs I have Apple Remote Desktop, where I can logon to machines in a session,check for any nefarious student activity and if necessary, log off or lock users out of machines. Could anyone give me a suggestion for an equivalent Windows system manager where I can do these tasks - e.g. not just a vnc client but one with more management options?

• Automate BESR 8.5 Deployment

  I have been searching for a way, script, rain dance, to automate the deployment of several BESR 8.5 created images (v2i file extension). Does anyone have any experience on how to pull this off? I have tried Ghost Solution Suite 2.5, but it doesn't seem to work with images that are password protected. Any help, tool, 3rd party program, etc, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

• Hyper-V can't connect from host to guest via RDC

  As the title describes I would like to connect via Remote Desktop Connection to my VM. I want to use it as a Dev-machine and therefore would like to work full screen, as far as I understand RDC is the way to go. I have created an internal network connection within Hyper-V, assigned it to my VM, set a static IP/Subnet on guest (Win7 Pro) and host(Win8.1 Enterprise). It worked good for the first couple of times but now it seems to be broken or I have to do odd enable/disable network connection "dances" to get it running. Ping also doesn't work always so it does seem as if the guest and host would be "disconnected".. Is there something I can do so that the network connection always will be established?

• RDP windows key jamming

  There is a known bug in RDP; if you lock the screen while connected to a computer the computer you are connected to will have its windows key jammed. There are a few work arounds that involve hammering the windows key and re-locking the screen but this isn't a bug I want to put up with anymore. Microsoft has said they wont fix this bug because it's XP specific and they are only working on security bugs now because XP is at end of life. Is there any way I can fix this or am I just going to have to find an alternative remote desktop software.

• BackupPC back-up has not been finished in 12 hours(!)

  I installed BackupPC toda on a server and set it to do a back-up 12 hours ago... while it's been backing up since, it seems very very slow and it's not completed yet. It's just backing up a testserver with a total disk usage of 1.8GB. What could cause the back-up process to be so slow? rsnapshot always worked wonderfully fast, but I want to improve my back-up solution. df shows that the size on the back-up disk is actually still increasing.
