  • DialogBox in Win32 - Prevent multiple instance

    - by UK
Hello all, I have a program which creates DialogBox window when user clicks the menu item from tray icon, case ID_OPTIONS: DialogBox ( GetModuleHandle ( NULL ), MAKEINTRESOURCE ( IDD_SETUP_DIALOG ), hWnd, reinterpret_cast<DLGPROC>(SetupDlgProc) ); return 0; But the problem here is everytime when users clicks item from tray , a new instance of the dialogbox appears. Is there anyway to prevent this multiple instance ? BTW, my SetupDlgProc looks like this, BOOL CALLBACK SetupDlgProc ( HWND hwnd, UINT Message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam ) { switch ( Message ) { case WM_INITDIALOG: ... } } Thanks for your help.

  • Premature optimization is the root of all evil, but can it ever be too late?

    - by polygenelubricants
"We should forget about small efficiencies, say about 97% of the time: premature optimization is the root of all evil" So what is that 3% like? Can the avoidance of premature optimization ever be taken too extreme that it does more harm than good? Even if it's rare, has there been a case of a real measurable software engineering disaster due to complete negligence to optimize early in the process? Bonus question: is software engineering pretty much the only field that has such a counter intuitive principle regarding doing something earlier rather than later before things potentially become too big a problem to fix? Personal question: how do you justify something as premature optimization and not just a case of you being lazy/ignorant/dumb?

  • Integer output in Java method not same as pre-converted char value.

    - by David
I'm trying to parse a simple text file in an integer method and then output an integer from such file so that other parts of the program can use it. For testing purposes it also displays the character value (9 in this case). The integer value for some reason is 57. I've also tried it with another part of the text file (which in that case should be 5, but is instead 53). After looking at an ASCII chart, I see that 57 is the ASCII version of the "symbol" 9 and that 53 is the ASCII version of the "symbol" 5. Is there any simple way I can fix this? I'm getting kind of frustrated as I'm a Java newbie (I've mostly only used FreePascal before this).

  • jQuery live() and stopPropagation() issue

    - by colourandcode
I know that the live() event handles event bubbling different than all other jQuery events. jQuery recommends using 'return false', but in my case that doesn't work. The issue is: I have a DIV which contains an anchor tag. The DIV is bound using live(). Whenever I click the anchor tag inside this DIV it bubbles and calls the DIV's event. If I bind an event to that A tag which returns false it prevents the link from opening. Neither stopPropagation() or return false work in this case. Are there any other options? Ideally I'd like to keep the live() event around.

  • SQL Server WHERE Clause using Temporary Columns

    - by AbeP
    Hi all, I have the following query, which uses a CASE statement. Is there anyway to add into the where clause WHERE IsBusinessDayFinal = 0? without using a temporary table? thanks so much! SELECT ac.DateTimeValue, CASE WHEN pc.IsBusinessDay IS NOT NULL THEN pc.IsBusinessDay ELSE ac.IsBusinessDay END AS IsBusinessDayFinal, ac.FullYear, ac.MonthValue, ac.DayOfMonth, ac.DayOfWeek, ac.Week FROM [dbo].[AdminCalendar] ac LEFT JOIN [dbo].ProjectCalendar pc ON ac.DateTimeValue = pc.DateTimeValue AND pc.ProjectId = @projectId WHERE ac.DateTimeValue >= @startDate AND ac.DateTimeValue <= @finishDate;

  • An exception to avoid copy and paste code?

    - by Jian Lin
There are many files in our project that would call a Facebook api. And the call is complicated, spanning usually 8 lines or more, just for the argument values. In this case, we can make it into a function, and place that function in a common_library.php, but doing so would just change the name of the function call from the Facebook API function to our name, and we still need to repeat the 8 lines of arguments. Each time, the call is very similar, but with slight variations to the argument values. In that case, would copy and paste be needed no matter what we do?

  • how to translate Haskell into Scalaz?

    - by TOB
One of my high school students and I are going to try to do a port of Haskell's Parsec parser combinator library into Scala. (It has the advantage over Scala's built-in parsing library that you can pass state around fairly easily because all the parsers are monads.) The first hitch I've come across is trying to figure out how Functor works in scalaz. Can someone explain how to convert this Haskell code: data Reply s u a = Ok a !(State s u) ParseError | Error ParseError instance Functor (Reply s u) where fmap f (Ok x s e) = Ok (f x) s e fmap _ (Error e) = Error e -- XXX into Scala (using Scalaz, I assume). I got as far as sealed abstract class Reply[S, U, A] case class Ok[S, U, A](a: A, state: State[S, U], error: ParseError) extends Reply[S, U, A] case class Error[S, U, A](error: ParseError) extends Reply[S, U, A] and know that I should make Reply extend the scalaz.Functor trait, but I can't figure out how to do that. (Mostly I'm having trouble figuring out what the F[_] parameter does.) Any help appreciated! Thanks, Todd

  • Unable to Calculate Position within Owner-Draw Text

    - by Jonathan Wood
I'm trying to use Visual Studio 2012 to create a Windows Forms application that can place the caret at the current position within a owner-drawn string. However, I've been unable to find a way to accurately calculate that position. I've done this successfully before in C++. I've now tried numerous methods in C#. Originally, I tried using .NET classes to determine the correct position, but then I tried accessing the Windows API directly. In some cases, I came close, but after some time I still cannot place the caret accurately. I've created a small test program and posted key parts below. I've also posted the entire project here. The exact font used is not important to me; however, my application assumes a mono-spaced font. Any help is appreciated. • Implicit parameter in Scalaz

    - by Thomas Jung
    I try to find out why the call Ø in scalaz.ListW.<^> works def <^>[B: Zero](f: NonEmptyList[A] => B): B = value match { case Nil => Ø case h :: t => f(Scalaz.nel(h, t)) } My minimal theory is: trait X[T]{ def y : T } object X{ implicit object IntX extends X[Int]{ def y = 42 } implicit object StringX extends X[String]{ def y = "y" } } trait Xs{ def ys[T](implicit x : X[T]) = x.y } class A extends Xs{ def z[B](implicit x : X[B]) : B = ys //the call Ø } Which produces: import X._ scala> new A().z[Int] res0: Int = 42 scala> new A().z[String] res1: String = y Is this valid? Can I achieve the same result with fewer steps?

  • counting number of new entries in guest book

    - by Lucka
I want to display the number of new(unseen) guest entries in the guest book of a user. I was thinking to count it so that, total number of entries in guestbook minus entries in guestbook at time of last login. However, I think that is not a good approach, because if the user logs in but does not go to his guestbook, in that case, the entries should be still "new", also if some new entry is posted in the user while he is online, it does not work in that case too. Any suggested please?

  • what is wrong: "value Parsers is not a member of package scala.util.parsing.combinator"?

    - by Nick Fortescue
I've got the above odd error message that I don't understand "value Parsers is not a member of package scala.util.parsing.combinator". I'm trying to learn Parser combinators by writing a C parser step by step. I started at token, so I have the classes: import util.parsing.combinator.JavaTokenParsers object CeeParser extends JavaTokenParsers { def token: Parser[CeeExpr] = ident } abstract class CeeExpr case class Token(name: String) extends CeeExpr This is as simple as I could make it. The code below works fine, but if I uncomment the commented line I get the error message given above: object Play { def main(args: Array[String]) { //val parser: _root_.scala.util.parsing.combinator.Parsers.Parser[CeeExpr] CeeParser.token val x = CeeParser.token print(x) } } In case it is a problem with my setup, I'm using scala 2.7.6 via the scala-plugin for intellij. Can anyone shed any light on this? The message is wrong, Parsers is a member of scala.util.parsing.combinator.

  • How to hide certain elements on a page using jQuery

    - by Ankur
    I am trying to implement something that is similar to a faceted search. My data is a series of objects and relationships. The idea is that you click an object (in this case "95 Theses" and then the possibly relationships are displayed, in this case "author" and clicking the relationship shows the object that matches the relationship, in this case "Martin Luther". My clicking of objects and relationsips (predicates) works fine. What I need to do is allow users to click an object or relationship and have all those that extend from it removed. This is what I thought of adding when a object or relationship 'tag' is clicked (every time I add another object or relationship I increment the global attribute called 'level'): if($(".objHolder,. preHolder").filter("[level>'"+level+"']").filter("[holderId='"+holderId+"']").length) { $(".objHolder,. preHolder").filter("[level>'"+level+"']").filter("[holderId='"+holderId+"']").remove(); } <table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="2"> <tbody><tr> <td class="objHolder" objid="1" holderid="1" level="1"> <table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="2"> <tbody><tr class="objItemRow" objid="1" holderid="1" level="1"> <td class="objItem" objid="1" holderid="1" level="2" bgcolor="#eeeeee" nowrap="nowrap">95 Theses</td> </tr></tbody> </table></td> <td><img src="images/right.jpg" alt="" height="10" width="16"></td> <td class="preHolder" level="2" holderid="1"> <table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="2"><tbody> <tr><td class="preItem" level="3" subid="1" preid="1" holderid="1" bgcolor="#eeeeee" nowrap="nowrap">author</td></tr> </tbody></table></td> <td><img src="images/right.jpg" alt="" height="10" width="16"></td> <td class="objHolder" level="3" holderid="1"> <table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="2"><tbody><tr><td class="objItem" level="4" objid="3" holderid="1" bgcolor="#eeeeee" nowrap="nowrap">Martin Luther</td></tr></tbody></table> </td> </tr></tbody> </table>

  • symfony 2 verify type of data stored in a single column

  • How to null a translation in gettext system?

    - by Evgeny
Suppose a simple phrase "In" in English needs to be interpreted as "" - empty string in Russian. Is is possible to specify that in the .po file? What normally happens if you set msgstr "" - you'll get the untranslated key, but I want to get nothing in that specific case. Here is a use case: I have underneath a giant search bar a set of buttons to select questions (for a Q&A site) from particular scopes - like so: (in English) In: [all] [unanswered] [my own] (in Russian I want) [???] [??? ???????] [???] It just sounds more natural. Yes I can leave out In for english, but I don't want to and I do not want to put button (things in [] are buttons) html into the 'po' file. Thanks!

  • When is it appropriate to use C++ exceptions?

    - by krebstar
I'm trying to design a class that needs to dynamically allocate some memory.. I had planned to allocate the memory it needs during construction, but how do I handle failed memory allocations? Should I throw an exception? I read somewhere that exceptions should only be used for "exceptional" cases, and running out of memory doesn't seem like an exceptional case to me.. Should I allocate memory in a separate initialization routine instead and check for failures and then destroy the class instance gracefully? Or should I use exceptions instead? The class won't have anything useful to do if these memory allocations should fail.. EDIT: The consensus seems to be that running out of memory IS an exceptional case. Will see how to go about this.. Thanks.. :)

  • iPhone memory management

    - by Prazi
I am newbie to iPhone programming. I am not using Interface Builder in my programming. I have some doubt about memory management, @property topics in iPhone. Consider the following code @interface LoadFlag : UIViewController { UIImage *flag; UIImageView *preview; } @property (nonatomic, retain) UIImageView *preview; @property (nonatomic, retain) UIImage *flag; @implementation @synthesize preview; @synthesize flag; - (void)viewDidLoad { flag = [UIImage imageNamed:@"myImage.png"]]; NSLog(@"Preview: %d\n",[preview retainCount]); //Count: 0 but shouldn't it be 1 as I am retaining it in @property in interface file preview=[[UIImageView alloc]init]; NSLog(@"Count: %d\n",[preview retainCount]); //Count: 1 preview.frame=CGRectMake(0.0f, 0.0f, 100.0f, 100.0f); preview.image = flag; [self.view addSubview:preview]; NSLog(@"Count: %d\n",[preview retainCount]); //Count: 2 [preview release]; NSLog(@"Count: %d\n",[preview retainCount]); //Count: 1 } When & Why(what is the need) do I have to set @property with retain (in above case for UIImage & UIImageView) ? I saw this statement in many sample programs but didn't understood the need of it. When I declare @property (nonatomic, retain) UIImageView *preview; statement the retain Count is 0. Why doesn't it increase by 1 inspite of retaining it in @property. Also when I declare [self.view addSubview:preview]; then retain Count increments by 1 again. In this case does the "Autorelease pool" releases for us later or we have to take care of releasing it. I am not sure but I think that the Autorelease should handle it as we didn't explicitly retained it so why should we worry of releasing it. Now, after the [preview release]; statement my count is 1. Now I don't need UIImageView anymore in my program so when and where should I release it so that the count becomes 0 and the memory gets deallocated. Again, I am not sure but I think that the Autorelease should handle it as we didn't explicitly retained it so why should we worry of releasing it. What will happen if I release it in -(void) dealloc method In the statement - flag = [UIImage imageNamed:@"myImage.png"]]; I haven't allocated any memory to flag but how can I still use it in my program. In this case if I do not allocate memory then who allocates & deallocates memory to it or is the "flag" just a reference pointing to - [UIImage imageNamed:@"myImage.png"]];. If it is a reference only then do i need to release it. Thanks in advance.

  • Element point map for html5 canvas element, need algorithm

    - by Artiom Chilaru
I'm currently working on a pure html 5 canvas implementation of the "flying tag cloud sphere", which many of you have undoubtedly seen as a flash object in some pages. The tags are drawn fine, and the performance is satisfactory, but there's one thing in the canvas element that's kind of breaking this idea: you can't identify the objects that you've drawn on a canvas, as it's just a simple flat "image".. What I have to do in this case is catch the click event, and try to "guess" which element was clicked. So I have to have some kind of matrix, which stores a link to a tag object for each pixel on the canvas, AND I have to update this matrix on every redraw. Now this sounds incredibly inefficient, and before I even start trying to implement this, I want to ask the community - is there some "well known" algorithm that would help me in this case? Or maybe I'm just missing something, and the answer is right behind the corner? :)

So I need to know is this will work in controlView or must write it in NSObject class ? + seconde question : I want to open Mail app from my app and copy the content in the view to mail body, then the user choice the contact from his contacts list ! Public Property Let DataControl_Value(ByVal Value As Variant) Public Property Get DataControl_Value() As Variant This property is editable at design time if i use it VB6.0 Applications. Same thing is read only in case if i use it in vc++ MFC applications. I have defined one more property like below. Public Property Let DataControl_DataItemDef(ByVal Value As DTMDATACONTROLLib.IXMLDOMNode) Public Property Get DataControl_DataItemDef() As DTMDATACONTROLLib.IXMLDOMNode In this case the "DataControl_DataItemDef" property will not be available at design time.[not displaying in control's property window.] Kindly help me to resolve the issue.

  • Feature categories for a social network

    - by mafutrct
Not sure if this question belongs on SO. Anyway, please let me try to clarify the issue. I'm currently planning a social program. It's basically a chat server with the major additional ability to play games. I'd like to create categories of features that are offered to users. My question is, are there any useful standard feature categories? Does not have to be specific to my case, I'm interested in the general case as well. Just to give you an idea of what I'm thinking: functional e.g. play games social e.g. chatting operational e.g. 24/7 service availability I'm entirely unsure if this is the right place to ask, if you know of any better site to ask please don't hesitate to add a comment.

  • What are the advantages to use StringBuilder versus XmlDocument or related to create XML documetns?

    - by Rob
This might be a bit of a code smell, but I have seen it is some production code, namely the use of StringBuilder as opposed to XmlDocument when creating XML documents. In some cases these are write once operations (e.g. create the document and save it to disk) where as others are passing the built string to an XmlDocument to preform an XslTransform to a document that is returned to the client. So obvious question: is there merit to doing things this way, is it something that should be done on a case-by-case basis, or is this the wrong way of doing things?

  • Typical text encoding and EOL behavior on mobile devices

    - by Dan W
Typical things to worry about when dealing with text are the BOM/signature, encoding, and the end of line (EOL) char/chars. I know that Windows often favours \r\n (CR+LF) and Mac/Linux favours \n (LF), but how about popular mobile devices such as the iPhone and Android? Do typical apps on those platforms favour one or the other (or maybe even \r for iOS)? I'll supply both types to the user just in case, but I'd like to choose one as default. Also, which text encodings are mobiles most likely to use - UTF-8, iso-8859-1, Windows 1252 (or other default codepage) or maybe even UTF-16? And if they use UTF-8/16, are they likely to need (or require not having) a BOM/signature? What is the typical behavior here? Once again, I'll supply a range of encodings to the user just in case, but I'd like to prioritize or use certain encodings as default if it's appropriate.

  • Insert into a generic dictionary with possibility of duplicate keys?

    - by Chris Clark
Is there any reason to favor one of these approaches over the other when inserting into a generic dictionary with the possibility of a key conflict? I'm building an in-memory version of a static collection so in the case of a conflict it doesn't matter whether the old or new value is used. If Not mySettings.ContainsKey(key) Then mySettings.Add(key, Value) End If Versus mySettings(key) = Value And then of course there is this, which is obviously not the right approach: Try mySettings.Add(key, Value) Catch End Try Clearly the big difference here is that the first and second approaches actually do different things, but in my case it doesn't matter. It seems that the second approach is cleaner, but I'm curious if any of you .net gurus have any deeper insight. Thanks!
