    Right off the bat, Oracle's Senior Vice President, Server Technologies Development made his purpose very clear: demonstrate how the elements of the Oracle product stack are evolving (and integrating) together. There are some great details about the new functionality of each Oracle application line and how the different products sync and interact. The lifecycle charts in Kurian's presentation illustrate how data can flow from an Oracle Demantra into Oracle E-Business Suite and back out to an Oracle Agile system to support value chain planning. With so many products at play in the enterprise, Kurian shows that if you trust that your systems can work together, IT strategy becoming much more about managing business process than managing software product.

  • Parallelism in .NET – Part 17, Think Continuations, not Callbacks

    In traditional asynchronous programming, we’d often use a callback to handle notification of a background task’s completion.  The Task class in the Task Parallel Library introduces a cleaner alternative to the traditional callback: continuation tasks. Asynchronous programming methods typically required callback functions.  For example, MSDN’s Asynchronous Delegates Programming Sample shows a class that factorizes a number.  The original method in the example has the following signature: public static bool Factorize(int number, ref int primefactor1, ref int primefactor2) { //... .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } However, calling this is quite “tricky”, even if we modernize the sample to use lambda expressions via C# 3.0.  Normally, we could call this method like so: int primeFactor1 = 0; int primeFactor2 = 0; bool answer = Factorize(10298312, ref primeFactor1, ref primeFactor2); Console.WriteLine("{0}/{1} [Succeeded {2}]", primeFactor1, primeFactor2, answer); If we want to make this operation run in the background, and report to the console via a callback, things get tricker.  First, we need a delegate definition: public delegate bool AsyncFactorCaller( int number, ref int primefactor1, ref int primefactor2); Then we need to use BeginInvoke to run this method asynchronously: int primeFactor1 = 0; int primeFactor2 = 0; AsyncFactorCaller caller = new AsyncFactorCaller(Factorize); caller.BeginInvoke(10298312, ref primeFactor1, ref primeFactor2, result => { int factor1 = 0; int factor2 = 0; bool answer = caller.EndInvoke(ref factor1, ref factor2, result); Console.WriteLine("{0}/{1} [Succeeded {2}]", factor1, factor2, answer); }, null); This works, but is quite difficult to understand from a conceptual standpoint.  To combat this, the framework added the Event-based Asynchronous Pattern, but it isn’t much easier to understand or author. Using .NET 4’s new Task<T> class and a continuation, we can dramatically simplify the implementation of the above code, as well as make it much more understandable.  We do this via the Task.ContinueWith method.  This method will schedule a new Task upon completion of the original task, and provide the original Task (including its Result if it’s a Task<T>) as an argument.  Using Task, we can eliminate the delegate, and rewrite this code like so: var background = Task.Factory.StartNew( () => { int primeFactor1 = 0; int primeFactor2 = 0; bool result = Factorize(10298312, ref primeFactor1, ref primeFactor2); return new { Result = result, Factor1 = primeFactor1, Factor2 = primeFactor2 }; }); background.ContinueWith(task => Console.WriteLine("{0}/{1} [Succeeded {2}]", task.Result.Factor1, task.Result.Factor2, task.Result.Result)); This is much simpler to understand, in my opinion.  Here, we’re explicitly asking to start a new task, then continue the task with a resulting task.  In our case, our method used ref parameters (this was from the MSDN Sample), so there is a little bit of extra boiler plate involved, but the code is at least easy to understand. That being said, this isn’t dramatically shorter when compared with our C# 3 port of the MSDN code above.  However, if we were to extend our requirements a bit, we can start to see more advantages to the Task based approach.  For example, supposed we need to report the results in a user interface control instead of reporting it to the Console.  This would be a common operation, but now, we have to think about marshaling our calls back to the user interface.  This is probably going to require calling Control.Invoke or Dispatcher.Invoke within our callback, forcing us to specify a delegate within the delegate.  The maintainability and ease of understanding drops.  However, just as a standard Task can be created with a TaskScheduler that uses the UI synchronization context, so too can we continue a task with a specific context.  There are Task.ContinueWith method overloads which allow you to provide a TaskScheduler.  This means you can schedule the continuation to run on the UI thread, by simply doing: Task.Factory.StartNew( () => { int primeFactor1 = 0; int primeFactor2 = 0; bool result = Factorize(10298312, ref primeFactor1, ref primeFactor2); return new { Result = result, Factor1 = primeFactor1, Factor2 = primeFactor2 }; }).ContinueWith(task => textBox1.Text = string.Format("{0}/{1} [Succeeded {2}]", task.Result.Factor1, task.Result.Factor2, task.Result.Result), TaskScheduler.FromCurrentSynchronizationContext()); This is far more understandable than the alternative.  By using Task.ContinueWith in conjunction with TaskScheduler.FromCurrentSynchronizationContext(), we get a simple way to push any work onto a background thread, and update the user interface on the proper UI thread.  This technique works with Windows Presentation Foundation as well as Windows Forms, with no change in methodology.

  • Adobe flash player not working with Amazon Prime

    I have ubuntu 12.04 64bit using Google Chrome. I had chromium from the app center then today amazon prime video stopped working. It told me to update Flash. So I uninstalled chromium and installed Google Chrome. Didn't work. Then I downloaded flash for ubuntu via apt. That one gave me a "flash version isn't supported" message. The flash version was 11. Now I tried http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/flashplugin-installer It worked, but right in the middle of the video, it popped the error message again. Sorry we are unable to stream this video. This is likely because your Flash Player needs to be updated. So I don't know what happened.

  • flickr, other account types not appearing in online-accounts

    Using Shotwell, I discovered that to publish to Flickr I need to set up an online account. But the online-accounts system settings only has support for Google, Facebook, Windows Live, Microsoft Exchange and Enterprise Login (Kerberos). How do I add account types? These appear to be properly installed (dpkg-reconfigure returns silently): gnome-control-center-signon is already the newest version. account-plugin-yahoo is already the newest version. account-plugin-flickr is already the newest version.   • Ubuntu 12.10 MBR not loading from dual boot selector

    Since I am new to the forums here I cannot post pictures, but hopefully this link to my error screen will work. Error when selecting to boot the Ubuntu mbr Basically no matter what I do, windows boot manager wants to load windows and windows only. I tried running from my hard drive and also from a USB drive that had live installed. Both times I ended up with this message. I am running windows 7 with all the newest updates, on a Samsung series 7 Laptop. I have had many dual boot machines in the past and never seen this issue. I even had a dual booting windows 7 machine a few months ago and had no issues at all. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Justin

  • Phpmyadmin Not Working

    I recently installed phpmyadmin onto ubuntu server 10.04 using sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin The installation went fine and everything was working including phpmyadmin. I then performed a restart of the server and now apache2 starts up but when I navigate to http://192.168.1.72/phpmyadmin/ I am getting a 403 error.   • Visual Studio 11 not 2011

    A little pet peeve of mine is when people incorrectly refer to the Developer Preview (or the upcoming Beta) as Visual Studio 2011 instead of the correct Visual Studio 11. The "11" refers to the version number (internally we call it Dev11). What the product will be called when it is released is anyone's guess (it could keep the name or it could have a year appended to it, or it could be something else, who knows). Even if it does have a year appended to the name, I think it is a safe bet it won't be last year! For reference, version 10 was the previous version of Visual Studio which happened to be released in 2010, hence it got the name Visual Studio 2010. That is what confuses new people to this product I guess... they think that the two-digit number matches the year, just because it coincided like that last year. (btw, internally we called it Dev10). For further reference, older releases were: Visual Studio 2008 (v9) aka "Orcas", Visual Studio 2005 (v8) aka "Whidbey", Visual Studio .NET 2003 (v7.1) aka "Everett", and Visual Studio .NET 2002 (v7) aka "Rainier". Before that, we were in the pre-.NET era with Visual Studio 6 (where the version and the product name matched, without the year appended to the name). This DMV enables DBA to monitor query progress while it is being executed. Counters in the DMV are per operation per thread. So we’ll be able to monitor in real time which thread (even for parallel processing) processes which node in the plan. Or find heavy operations “post mortem”.   • Why does Ubuntu's Nautilus display a folder called "Examples" while the console displays "examples.desktop"

    These folders occur at /home/username. How does this name discrepancy arise? (Uppercase E versus lowercase e.) It seems to be a shortcut to /usr/share/example-content. How can I delete /usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase without using the command line? One possible answer is to make a privileged Nautilus using something like these SUSE instructions (link below). Unfortunately "gnomesu nautilus" gives me a "gnomesu: no such file" message and "sudo nautilus" does not do anything when added to the properties of the Launcher.   • Why would the Default Gateway constantly require resetting?

    I've had a (mostly) steady internet connection for the past two months. For the last hour, however, my connectivity has been dropping every 10 minutes or so, and must be reset. So far, I've always been able to fix the issue by running Windows network diagnostics (On Windows 7 64 bit), but the lack of constant internet is making it a pain to try and stream video, download games through steam, etc. Windows always reports a fix by "Resetting the Local Area Connector", telling me: Default Gateway Not Available. What's going on? Is the trouble on my end, or with my ISP? (Timewarner Cable) Things I've Tried: Reinstalling the motherboard's LAN drivers Manually setting a default gateway (gets cleared, reverts to default settings) Unplugged (Hard Reset) the router Unplugged / replugged ethernet cable.

I have an ebs-backed ec2 ubuntu server which is running but unreachable. ** There are very stupidly no recent backups ** I made a snapshot of the block, created a volume, spun up a new instance, attached the new volume. I see all the data from my site in the /opt/bitnami/mysql/data directory, but when I go into the mysql console, it shows only information_schema and test when I type show databases; How can I 'point' mysql to the correct folder? Anything specific I should look into to figure out what could be causing this? Edit: It seems that following the guide on the Intel e1000e drivers page allowed the card to start working. Is this a real fix or is there a better way?

  • Why do I get error, Invalid command 'PythonHandler'?

    I'm trying to deploy a Django application, but I've hit a brick wall. On Debian (latest), I've run these commands so far: apt-get install apache2 apache2-doc apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils libexpat1 ssl-cert libapache2-mod-python python-django I've tried adding the module manually in the Apache 2 config files, but to be honest I'm totally lost. It's totally different to Apache version 1 which I used years ago. Syntax error on line 7 of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default: Invalid command 'PythonHandler', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration I've added the following to my sites-available/default file, between the tags. <Location "/"> SetHandler python-program PythonHandler django.core.handlers.modpython SetEnv DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE hellodjango1.settings PythonDebug Off </Location> Here's what tutorials I've used so far, without much luck: Django | How to use Django with Apache and mod_python | Django Documentation How To Install Django On Debian Etch (Apache2/mod_python)

  • keyboard shortcut editor does not intercept keypresses

    I've been using suckless dwm for years and i really need to make the shortcuts look alike to feel at home ;) On ubuntu oneiric, the keyboard shortcut editor is opened with: system settings - keyboard - shortcuts. The help in the window specifies: 'To edit a shortcut, click the row and hold down the new keys or press backspace to clear' So I select the first row of the 'navigation' section and highlight 'Move window to workspace 1' Then i hold down ctrl+alt+1 for ten seconds but nothing happens. The shortcut still appears as 'disabled'. I'm unable to set any shortcut, i've tried many combinations. For example, a combination with Super key will be intercepted by unity instead of being catched by the keyboard shortcut editor window. Can anybody reproduce this with oneiric ? What am I doing wrong ?

    Running Win8 x64. C is an SSD with lots of free space (200GB). I run: recimg /createimage C:\CustomRefreshImages\Img121105 Output says: Source OS location: C: Recovery image path: C:\CustomRefreshImages\Img121105\CustomRefresh.wim Creating recovery image. Press [ESC] to cancel. Initializing The recovery image cannot be written. Error Code - 0x80070002 The paths specified in the command line are created, and I'm running this in an elevated command prompt, so it's not a permissions issue. I've googled this but could only find worthless results, including a particularly entertaining one where the "solution" included instructions for creating a screenshot (press PrtScreen). Any help would be most appreciated.

    I have a Asus EeePC with a GMA500 video card. I followed the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsbo/, which made the netbook boot correctly. Without any xorg.conf file, Xorg uses the VESA driver, which is quite slow. Manually specifying fbdev as driver in xorg.conf also works. Which one should I use? Are there any other drivers for Xorg that do better at 2d accelleration (since the kernel driver doesn't support 3d acceleration)?

  • Screen brightness control not working on Lenovo T530

    My brightness control doesn't work with a fresh install of 12.10 (brand new laptop). It is set to the brightest setting when I boot up and when I try to change it, I see the notification bar come up but the brightness doesn't actually change. I've tried all the solutions I could find around the Internet but none of them work. Things I have tried include: Editing /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness In /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-brightness-control.conf: Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" In /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" There is no xorg.conf file in 12.10 that I have found, so the solutions that suggest editing that file don't do me a whole lot of good. I am currently using the Nouveau driver, but switching to the Nvidia proprietary drivers made no difference. Any other ideas? When is this bug going to be fixed? With all the reports I've come across I would think it would get a lot of attention. Thanks.
