But when I use foreach it works perfect. Question Why is this like this? the SortBy is in the same model class as other fields in the view. The only difference is that SortBy is not being filled in the Index view with other fields, instead it's being filled in controller action. What is the explanation for this? Am I missing any C# definition or something such as dynamic objects or something?

• good practice for string.partition in python

• Problems with DNS propagation 10 days after a change was made

  The engineering team I work with has been in the process of moving equipment from one datacenter to another. Ten days ago we moved one of our name servers authoritative for our client's domains (ns1.faithhiway.com) and updated its IP address with its respective DNS provider (register.com) to point to the new datacenter. All tests done show that this name server is correctly running at its new location and when queried, returning the correct response for any domains it is responsible for. The problem is that well after 72 hours had gone by we were still seeing more DNS activity at its old IP address than at the new. The good news is that we kept a name server responding on the old IP address for the time being so we are not seeing any issues with the domains our nameserver is responsible for but the goal is to retire that as soon as possible. As you can see from WhatsMyDNS.net, a decent amount of propagation has occurred over the last 10 days since we made this change, but still there are some locations reporting our original IP. Considering that the TTL is only 3600 with the name servers responsible for this domain, it does not make any sense to myself or the other engineers working with me that we are having this issue. But a few (OpenDNS and SpeakEasy in the examples above) are still showing the old IP address. Considering the length of time that has gone by, it seems obvious to me that either we have made a mistake and not thoroughly handled the DNS changes on our end (likely) or there is a problem with either the DNS provider for this domain (Register) or with some of the DNS servers out in the wild (rather unlikely). Any advice on how I can proceed with this? UPDATE (January 31, 2011): First of all, I apologize for the length of both the original question and this update. I contemplated removing some of the excess from the original post but just in case this problem and its solution are helpful to someone else in the future I'm just going to leave everything as it is. Anyway, I've been doing some more research into this problem, and have discovered the following interesting occurrence. While running a check on the glue records for faithhiway.com always resolve correctly, if I go and check a client domain (where ns1.faithhiway.com is authoritative), I get a strange response. It looks like the root servers are returning nsX.faithhiway.com as their old IP addresses still (under Additional Section). Because we have a server still there responding to DNS queries, the trace finishes and returns the correct IP addresses as the final step (again, under Additional Section). • Cisco ASA: Allowing and Denying VPN Access based on membership to an AD group

  I have a Cisco ASA 5505 connecting to an Active Directory server for VPN authentication. Usually we'd restrict this to a particular OU, but in this case users which need access are spread across multiple OUs. So, I'd like to use a group to specify which users have remote access. I've created the group and added the users, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to deny users which aren't in that group. Right now, if someone connects they get assigned the correct group policy "companynamera" if they are in that group, so the LDAP mapping is working. However, users who are not in that group still authenticate fine, and their group policy becomes the LDAP path of their first group, i.e. CN=Domain Users,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com, and then are still allowed access. How do I add a filter so that I can map everything that isn't "companynamera" to no access?   Does anyone know how to either: Make ffmpeg set subtitle font size in the output video file Make mencoder produce an iPhone-compatible video file (with subtitles) I finally found out how to get Closed Captions video on iPhone, with mkv and srt files as source material. The secret was using the mov_text subtitle codec in ffmpeg (and turning on Closed Captions in the iPhone settings of course): ffmpeg -y -i in.mkv -i in.srt -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -map 1:0 -vcodec copy -acodec aac -ab 256k -scodec mov_text -strict -2 -metadata title="Title" -metadata:s:s:0 language=eng out.mp4 However, the font size appears very small on the iPhone, and I can't find out how to set it with ffmpeg (the iPhone has no option for this).   Have a strange problem in that I have a Rake task that seems to be using multiple versions of Ruby. When one fails, it seems to try another one. Details MacBook running 10.6.5 rvm 1.1.0 Rubies: 1.8.7-p302, ree-1.8.7-2010.02, ruby-1.9.2-p0 Rake 0.8.7 Gem 1.3.7 Veewee (provisioning Virtual Machines using Opcode.com, Vagrant and Chef) I'm not entirely sure the specific details of the error matter, but since it might be an issue with Veewee itself. So, what I'm trying to do is build a new box base on a veewee definition. The command fails with an error about a missing method- but what's interesting is how it fails. Errors I managed to figure out that if I only have one Ruby installed with RVM, it just fails. If I have more than one Ruby install, it fails at the same place, but execution seems to continue in another interpreter. Here are two different clipped console outputs. I've clipped them for size.   I'm using a Typed DataSet with an Insert statement; I have a table that has a smalldatetime field defined to accept null values. When I insert from a .NET 2.0 FormView, I get a "SqlDateTime overflow. Must be between 1/1/1753 12:00:00 AM and 12/31/9999 11:59:59 PM." Now, I've read this post, and the parameter as sent to the class constructor is defined as global::System.Nullable<global::System.DateTime> DoB So, it looks like it should accept a Nullable obj. Additionally, the generated code is testing the value sent. if ((DoB.HasValue == true)) { command.Parameters[6].Value = ((System.DateTime)(DoB.Value)); } else { command.Parameters[6].Value = global::System.DBNull.Value; } Specifically, the error is occurring when generated SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteScalar() runs: try { returnValue = command.ExecuteScalar(); } So, I guess my question is: how do I use a Typed DataSet to set a blank value (passed from a FormView on CommandName=Insert) to a null in a database?

• problems with user control page

  I am starting to give up troubleshooting this issue I had... I had an .ascx page and had the following user control in it: <td> <Club:DatePicker ID="dp1" runat="server" /> </td> however in my code behind when I tried to write methods: public System.DateTime startDateTime { get { return dp1.SelectedDate.Add(tp1.SelectedTime.TimeOfDay); } set { dp1.SelectedDate = value; tp1.SelectedTime = value; } } It can't reference dp1(dp1 is underlined in red) as well as tp1... why is this?? I've tried to convert the solution to a web application and yet it doesn't work. • iPhone: Grouped Table Confusion

  I'm trying to follow along with this UITableView tutorial and I'm afraid I'm getting confused. What I hope to accomplish is to create a grouped table, which resembles the look and feel of the following image (image source): For each "break" in the table, I assume that I need another section. I understand there is a global NSMutableArray, which acts as the data source to the UITableView. Inside this global array, there are dictionaries for sections and for data, but this is where I start getting confused. Should I create a unique table to store each section in addition to a new table for the rows that are part of that section? In other words, if I have five sections, will I end up with ten unique collections of data (one for each section and one to store the rows related to the section), which all eventually get stored in the global array?

  SQLServer int field. Value sometimes null. DataAdapter fills dataset OK and can display data in DatagridView OK. When trying to retrieve the data programmatically from the dataset the Dataset field retrieval code throws a StronglyTypedException error. • Why does this window object not have the eval function?

  I ran into an interesting (?) problem in the YUI rich edit demo on IE. When looking at the window object for the content editable frame used as the browser I see that the eval function is undefined (by running the following). javascript:alert(document.getElementById("editor_editor").contentWindow.eval) This only happens on IE (I checked on IE6 and IE8), and it doesn't happen on Firefox or Chrome. All the other window functions and properties seem to be in order, now I realise that eval is not really defined on the window but on the global object but my understanding was that in browsers the window is the global object (also eval does appear on all other windows so why not on this one?). Does anyone know if this is a know bug/limitation in IE and how I can get to eval in the context of the global object of this frame? (I need the side effects to be available to anything running from within this frame).

• How should I change my Graph structure (very slow insertion)?

  Hi, This program I'm doing is about a social network, which means there are users and their profiles. The profiles structure is UserProfile. Now, there are various possible Graph implementations and I don't think I'm using the best one. I have a Graph structure and inside, there's a pointer to a linked list of type Vertex. Each Vertex element has a value, a pointer to the next Vertex and a pointer to a linked list of type Edge. Each Edge element has a value (so I can define weights and whatever it's needed), a pointer to the next Edge and a pointer to the Vertex owner. I have a 2 sample files with data to process (in CSV style) and insert into the Graph. The first one is the user data (one user per line); the second one is the user relations (for the graph). The first file is quickly inserted into the graph cause I always insert at the head and there's like ~18000 users. The second file takes ages but I still insert the edges at the head. The file has about ~520000 lines of user relations and takes between 13-15mins to insert into the Graph. I made a quick test and reading the data is pretty quickly, instantaneously really. The problem is in the insertion. This problem exists because I have a Graph implemented with linked lists for the vertices. Every time I need to insert a relation, I need to lookup for 2 vertices, so I can link them together. This is the problem... Doing this for ~520000 relations, takes a while. How should I solve this? Solution 1) Some people recommended me to implement the Graph (the vertices part) as an array instead of a linked list. This way I have direct access to every vertex and the insertion is probably going to drop considerably. But, I don't like the idea of allocating an array with [18000] elements. How practically is this? My sample data has ~18000, but what if I need much less or much more? The linked list approach has that flexibility, I can have whatever size I want as long as there's memory for it. But the array doesn't, how am I going to handle such situation? What are your suggestions? Using linked lists is good for space complexity but bad for time complexity. And using an array is good for time complexity but bad for space complexity. Any thoughts about this solution? Solution 2) This project also demands that I have some sort of data structures that allows quick lookup based on a name index and an ID index. For this I decided to use Hash Tables. My tables are implemented with separate chaining as collision resolution and when a load factor of 0.70 is reach, I normally recreate the table. I base the next table size on this http://planetmath.org/encyclopedia/GoodHashTablePrimes.html. Currently, both Hash Tables hold a pointer to the UserProfile instead of duplication the user profile itself. That would be stupid, changing data would require 3 changes and it's really dumb to do it that way. So I just save the pointer to the UserProfile. The same user profile pointer is also saved as value in each Graph Vertex. So, I have 3 data structures, one Graph and two Hash Tables and every single one of them point to the same exact UserProfile. The Graph structure will serve the purpose of finding the shortest path and stuff like that while the Hash Tables serve as quick index by name and ID. What I'm thinking to solve my Graph problem is to, instead of having the Hash Tables value point to the UserProfile, I point it to the corresponding Vertex. It's still a pointer, no more and no less space is used, I just change what I point to. Like this, I can easily and quickly lookup for each Vertex I need and link them together. This will insert the ~520000 relations pretty quickly. I thought of this solution because I already have the Hash Tables and I need to have them, then, why not take advantage of them for indexing the Graph vertices instead of the user profile? It's basically the same thing, I can still access the UserProfile pretty quickly, just go to the Vertex and then to the UserProfile. But, do you see any cons on this second solution against the first one? Or only pros that overpower the pros and cons on the first solution? Other Solution) If you have any other solution, I'm all ears. But please explain the pros and cons of that solution over the previous 2. I really don't have much time to be wasting with this right now, I need to move on with this project, so, if I'm doing to do such a change, I need to understand exactly what to change and if that's really the way to go. Hopefully no one fell asleep reading this and closed the browser, sorry for the big testament. But I really need to decide what to do about this and I really need to make a change.
