    Concatenating  string is one of the most common tasks in SQL Server and every developer has to come across it. We have to concat the string when we have to see the display full name of the person by first name and last name. In this video we will see various methods to concatenate the strings. SQL Server 2012 has introduced new function CONCAT which concatenates the strings much efficiently. When we concat values with ‘+’ in SQL Server we have to make sure that values are in string format. However, when we attempt to concat integer we have to convert the integers to a string or else it will throw an error. However, with the newly introduce the function of CONCAT in SQL Server 2012 we do not have to worry about this kind of issue. It concatenates strings and integers without casting or converting them. You can specify various values as a parameter to CONCAT functions and it concatenates them together.   • SQL SERVER – Identify Most Resource Intensive Queries – SQL in Sixty Seconds #028 – Video

    During performance tuning conversation the very first question people often ask is what are the queries offending the server or in another word let us identify the queries which are the most resource intensive. The resources are often described as either Memory, CPU or IO. When we talk about the queries the same is applicable for them as well. The query which is doing lots of reads or writes are for sure resource intensive as well query which are taking maximum CPU time. Performance tuning is a very deep subject and we all have our own preference regarding what should be the first step to tuning and what should be looked with the salt of grain. Though there is no denying that a query which uses more resources than what it should be using for sure require tuning. There are many ways to do identify query using intense resources (e.g. Extended events etc) but in this one we will go by simple DMV. There is a small gotcha we all have to remember about usage of DMV is that it only brings back results from existing cache. So if you have a query which is very resource intensive but is not cached or if you have explicitly removed the query from the cache it will be not part of the result returned by this DMV. It is quite possible that a query is aged and removed from the cache if your cache is not huge. If your cache is large you may want to be careful in running this query during business hours as this query itself can be resource intensive.     Every developer once in a while facing an unfortunate situation where they have not yet saved the work and their SQL Server Management Studio crashes. Well, you can minimize the loss by optimizing auto recovery settings. In this video we can see how to set the auto recovery settings. Go to SSMS >> Tools >> Options >> Environment >> AutoRecover There are two different settings: 1) Save AutoRecover Information Every Minutes This option will save the SQL Query file at certain interval. Set this option to minimum value possible to avoid loss. If you have set this value to 5, in the worst possible case, you can loose last 5 minutes of the work. 2) Keep AutoRecover Information for Days This option will preserve the AutoRecovery information for specified days. Though, I suggest in case of accident open SQL Server Management Studio right away and recover your file. Do not procrastinate this important task for future dates.     There are a few questions I often get asked. I wonder how interesting is that in our daily life all of us have to often need the same kind of information at the same time. Here is the example of the similar questions: How many user created tables are there in the database? How many non clustered indexes each of the tables in the database have? Is table Heap or has clustered index on it? How many rows each of the tables is contained in the database? I finally wrote down a very quick script (in less than sixty seconds when I originally wrote it) which can answer above questions.   • Issue encondig java->xls

    This is not a pure java question and can also be related to HTML I've written a java servlet that queries a database table and shows the result as a html table. The user can also ask to receive the result as an Excel sheet. Im creating the Excel sheet by printing the same html table, but with the content-type of "application/vnd.ms-excel". The Excel file is created fine. The problem is that the tables may contain non-english data so I want to use a UTF-8 encoding. PrintWriter out = response.getWriter(); response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel:ISO-8859-1"); //response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel:UTF-8"); response.setHeader("cache-control", "no-cache"); response.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=file.xls"); out.print(src); out.flush(); The non-english characters appear as garbage (áéíóú) Also I tried converting to bytes from String byte[] arrByte = src.getBytes("ISO-8859-1"); String result = new String(arrByte, "UTF-8"); But I Still getting garbage, What can I do?.     I trying to make automatic variables available to Excel VBA (like ActiveSheet or ActiveCell) also available to PowerShell as 'automatic variables'. PowerShell engine is hosted in an Excel VSTO add-in and Excel.Application is available to it as Globals.ThisAddin.Application. I found this thread here on StackOverflow and started created PSVariable derived classes like: public class ActiveCell : PSVariable { public ActiveCell(string name) : base(name) { } public override object Value { get { return Globals.ThisAddIn.Application.ActiveCell; } } } public class ActiveSheet : PSVariable { public ActiveSheet(string name) : base(name) { } public override object Value { get { return Globals.ThisAddIn.Application.ActiveSheet; } } } and adding their instances to the current POwerShell session: runspace.SessionStateProxy.PSVariable.Set(new ActiveCell("ActiveCell")); runspace.SessionStateProxy.PSVariable.Set(new ActiveSheet("ActiveSheet")); This works and I am able to use those variables from PowerShell as $ActiveCell and $ActiveSheet (their value change as Excel active sheet or cell change). Then I read PSVariable documentation here and saw this: "There is no established scenario for deriving from this class. To programmatically create a shell variable, create an instance of this class and set it by using the PSVariableIntrinsics class." As I was deriving from PSVariable, I tried to use what was suggested: PSVariable activeCell = new PSVariable("ActiveCell"); activeCell.Value = Globals.ThisAddIn.Application.ActiveCell; runspace.SessionStateProxy.PSVariable.Set(activeCell); Using this, $ActiveCell appears in my PowerShell session, but its value doesn't change as I change the active cell in Excel. Is the above comment from PSVariable documentation something I should worry about, or I can continue creating PSVariable derived classes? Is there another way of making Excel globals available to PowerShell?

  • visual studio attaching to a process in debug mode

    i have a strange problem. the dll that i built (lets call it my.dll) in c++ visual studio 2010 uses a third party library (say tp.lib) which in turn calls a third party dll (say tp.dll). for debugging prupose i have in configurationProperties-debugging-command: Excel.exe and configurationProperties-debugging-commandArguments: "$(TargetPath)" in my computer i also set PATH variable to the directory where tp.dll resides now when i hit the F5 in visual studio excel opens up with my.dll and crashes giving me a "cannot open in dos mode" error. the reason this happens is tp.dll is not deployed when debug version of my.dll is deployed. when i open an instance of excel seperately and manually drop the debug version of my.dll then everything works fine and i can see all my functions that i wrote in my.dll the only issue is now i do not know how to debug becuase i do not know how to attach visual studio to the instance of excel i opened up seperately. my question is: 1 how can i attach visual studio to an already opened instance of Excel or 2 how can i hit F5 and still make Excel pick up the required tp.dll from the directory specified in the PATH variable before it starts to deploy my.dll. any of these two will allow my to step through the code for the purpose of debugging. thanks in advance.

    This is what I think about Microsoft Windows Phone. If Microsoft were in our shoes looking at various phones available their configurations, memory, front facing cameras etc. Microsoft disappointed the USA customer base again by not getting Nokia Lumia 800. The Past: If we talk few years ago, few business people were on their Blackberry’s and few Gadget lovers were on crappy Windows OS devices. The world was all going right till Apple came with a revolutionary device iPhone, which completely changed our perception towards phone and how great a smartphone can be. It’s not just phone but the whole technology industry. The romantic appealing of the phone and smooth touch and feel of it made everyone to get one of those bad boys. The sales went up for not just Apple for AT&T too. Even though everyone complained about the signal strength of AT&T, everyone wanted to be on it because they have iPhones. All world wanted iPhone back then except Microsoft with few comments on how it is not going to be in market. But it did great and rocked the industry. A few years later with iPhone and Android taking over the smartphone market Microsoft realized that it should be in the game too. Worked on the design of it, and gave us the best Mobile OS ever. Everyone thinks that iOS is a great OS for phones but if you have touched a Windows Phone and use it for real then you will realize the strengths of it. so last year we welcomed Windows Phone 7 The Present : Windows Phone 7 has the fastest growing market. The phones are cheap, you can buy from any carrier out there. The phone became smarter and smarter with the recent update “Mango (7.5)” and with the collaboration with Nokia, Microsoft created a new eco-system for smartphones with the best smartphone hardware and best smartphone software. Everyone in the world was excited about the collaboration. As we fly over cloud 9 imagining about Nokia made Windows Phones we all heard a good news from Nokia “Nokia World”. Nokia showed the world what a best hardware making company can do with Windows Phone 7.5 OS. Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 took the spotlight. Everyone here in USA and all over the world wanted to own a Nokia Lumia 800 because of the design, software, proprietary apps from Nokia (maps, ESPN, drive and music). If USA market had Nokia Lumia 800, then it would have been the best step Microsoft and Nokia had ever made in their history of smartphone market. With all the numbers going to Android and IPhone, its not clear on why Microsoft/Nokia did not release Lumia 800 here in USA. Its unclear if Microsoft had learnt the lesson or not. if it had learnt the lesson I guess Microsoft needs to get the Nokia Lumia 800 to the USA. The Future: This is where we hope we get the best form Microsoft. I was an iPhone user, I used 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4 and then moved to Windows Phone and never felt so happy with my iPhones’. From the day when Nokia announced the partnership with Microsoft and said that they going to come up with a new Nokia windows phone, I was dreaming for my Nokia Phone. but looks like it is not going to happen any time soon. My thoughts about the Market :  Nokia has the biggest market base in the world. Even though people moved to Android or iPhone over the years in other parts of the world like India and China, people still love to use Nokia. Everyone who uses a Windows Phone now will wait for that day when Nokia Lumia comes to the USA but what either or both of the companies should do for a better market share is to make a very aggressive move with the hardware and bet on the devices. I am pretty sure that it will work. everyone here in the USA will like to have a dual core windows phone with front facing camera and all other crazy things that android/apple phones offer. All apps launch from 1 program, Word for example has this link: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft Word 2010 (Beta) 2014006204190000" Or OneNote: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft OneNote 2010 (Beta) 2014006204190000" Because of that I can't associate files with Office programs in file properties, they actually associate with “Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler” (CVH.EXE). Anyone know another way to do that?

    During the keynote of the PASS Business Analytics Conference, Amir Netz presented the new forecasting capabilities in Power View for Office 365. I immediately tried the new feature (which was immediately available, a welcome surprise in a Microsoft announcement for a new release) and I had several issues trying to use existing data models. The forecasting has a few requirements that are not compatible with the “best practices” commonly used for a calendar table until this announcement. For example, if you have a Year-Month-Day hierarchy and you want to display a line chart aggregating data at the month level, you use a column containing month and year as a string (e.g. May 2014) sorted by a numeric column (such as 201405). Such a column cannot be used in the x-axis of a line chart for forecasting, because you need a date or numeric column. There are also other requirements and I wrote the article Prepare Data for Power View Forecasting in Power BI on SQLBI, describing how to create columns that can be used with the new forecasting capabilities in Power View for Office 365.

Such a column cannot be used in the x-axis of a line chart for forecasting, because you need a date or numeric column.   • Reinstall of Microsoft Office 2010 beta isn't prompting me for upgrade vs. side-by-side installation

    I'm running Office 2007 on Windows 7. When I ran the Microsoft Office 2010 beta installation, it asked if I wanted to upgrade the existing 2007 installation or install along side 2007. I later uninstalled 2010 and rebooted. When I re-ran the Office 2010 setup program, it no longer asked if I wanted to upgrade or install side by side. It just did a side by side install by default. How can I get it to re-prompt me, as I'd now like to upgrade my 2007 install.

  • Microsoft Outlook 2007 - General Failure. The URL was: "<http:/something.com>". The parameter is incorrect

    For the last two days, Outlook has decided it doesn't like URL's. Any email message that comes in containing an URL will show the following in an error dialogue message box when I click on the link: General Failure. The URL was: "http:/something.com/somewhere/". The parameter is incorrect If I copy the link into a browser, it works correctly. OS is Windows XP SP 3, Microsoft Office 2007 (Outlook), Internet Explorer 8 (also Chrome). I have, of course, Googled this and the two most popular solutions are: Solution 1: Add/Remove programs Set Program Access and Defaults Custom tab Make sure a default browser is selected Solution 2: Add/Remove Programs Select the MS Office 2007 item Click Change Click Repair I have tried both of these and I still get the problem. Has anyone else had this problem and solved it with a solution other than those listed above?
