• When/Why ( if ever ) should i think about doing Generic Programming/Meta Programming

  Hi there IMHO to me OOPS, design patterns make sense and i have been able to apply them practically. But when it comes to "generic programming /meta programming" of the Modern C++ kind, i am left confused. -- Is it a new programming/design paradigm ? -- Is it just limited to "library development"? If not, What design/coding situations call for using meta programming/generic programming. -- Does using templates mean i am doing generic programming? I have googled a lot on this topic but do not grasp the BIG PICTURE fully. Also see this post. After reading dicussions here under, up till now, I am sure ( might still not be correct): a) Generic programming and meta programming are two different concepts.

• What is everything involved from typing in code to executing a program?

  I realized, when just asking a question, I don't understand all the components that are part of the coding process. This seems a silly question, but I can't find a definitive answer on Google, Wiki, nothing. What exactly are all the parts called, and how do they work and intertwine? I'm talking whatever you type code into, whatever checks that for errors, compiles it, and runs it. I'd appreciate any links, repeats, etc. I apologize for such a bland, stupid question.

• Is Alpha Five Version 10 really all that its reported to be?

  I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database devlopment tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

• Aop, Unity, Interceptors and ASP.NET MVC Controller Action Methods

  Using log4net we would like to log all calls to our ASP.NET MVC controller action methods. The logs should include information about any parameters that were passed to the controller. Rather than hand-coding this in each action method we hope to use an AoP approach with Interceptors via Unity. We already have this working with some other classes that use interfaces (using the InterfaceInterceptor). However, we're not sure how to proceed with our controllers. Should we re-work them slightly to use an interface, or is there a simpler approach? Edit The VirtualMethodInterceptor seems to be the correct approach, however using this results in the following exception: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. • Pure-JavaScript projects in NetBeans?

  This seems like it ought to be obvious, yet I can't figure it out. I do a lot of JavaScript coding, and I really like NetBeans. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to create a "JavaScript" project in NetBeans. If I go to File - New Project, my only options are "Java", "Ruby", and "NetBeans Modules". I don't want any of these. My project consists mostly of JavaScript, with a little bit of CSS. I ususally just end up creating a "Ruby" project, but this seems retarded, since I don't actually have any Ruby code. Why isn't there an option to create a "JavaScript" or "Web" project, or at least a "Generic" project that doesn't revolve around a specific language? Am I missing something here?

• Keeping iPhone application in sync with GWT application.

  Hi, I'm working on an iPhone application that should work in offline and online modes. In it's online mode it's supposed to feed all the information the user enters to a webservice backed by GWT/GAE. In it's offline mode it's supposed to store the information locally, and when connection is available sync it up to the web service. Currently my plan is as follows: Provide a connection between an app and a webservice using Protobuffers for efficient over-the-wire communication Work with local DB using Core Data Poll the network status, and when available sync the database and keep some sort of local-db-to-remote-db key synchronization. The question is - am I in the right direction? Are the standard patterns for implementing this? Maybe someone can point me to an open-source application that works in a similar fashion? I am really new to iPhone coding, and would be very glad to hear any suggestions. Thanks

• Rectangular BackColor of selection in RichTextBox

  Background: I'm going to start studying/coding at the local university's library. Since I'm not a student, I won't be able to utilize their wireless internet access. Since StackOverflow is such a great resource, I want to be able to take it with me, so I'm building a small desktop application to load/search/display the most recent data dumps. Problem: I want to display code blocks in the same sort of rectangular block as this site does, so I played with the RichTextBox control to try to create this effect. Unfortunately, the RichTextBox.SelectedBackColor property only colors the actual text, when what I want is a rectangle reaching to the outer limits of the selection. Example: This is what I am able to produce with the RichTextBox: This is what I would like to create: Questions: Is there any way to produce this effect using the RichTextBox? If not, are there any other controls I could use to create this effect?

  Yes/no-question: Is there a Groovy GDK function to capitalize the first character of a string? I'm looking for a Groovy equivalent of Perl's ucfirst(..) or Apache Commons StringUtils.capitalize(str) (the latter capitalizes the first letter of all words in the input string). I'm currently coding this by hand using .. str = str[0].toUpperCase() + str[1 .. str.size() - 1] .. which works, but I assume there is a more Groovy way to do it. I'd imagine ucfirst(..) being a more common operation than say center(..) which is a standard method in the Groovy GDK (see http://groovy.codehaus.org/groovy-jdk/java/lang/String.html).

• How to code a batch file to copy and rename the most recently dated file?

  I'm trying to code a batch file to copy only the most recently dated file in a given folder to another directory on the local machine, and simultaneously rename it as it does. I've found a very similar question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/97371/batch-script-to-copy-newest-file and have managed to cobble together the below code from other forums too, but have hit a brick wall as it only results in the batch file itself being copied to the destination folder. It doesn't matter to me where the batch file itself sits in order for this to run. The source folder is C:! BATCH and the destination folder is C:\DROP The code is below, apologies if this is a glaringly obvious answer but it's literally the first foray into coding batch files for me... • how to handle it if the management just keep on giving me spec after spec non-stop?

  As a programmer, I feel burnt out if the management give me spec after spec, day after day. I think I can code 6 hours a day very focused, but non-stop coding does burn me out a little, especially it is 1 year or 18 months non-stop. A mere 1 week or 2 week vacation per year isn't going to help much. Sometimes I want to take some time to learn new things, or just to take a break for a month so as to re-charge, like back in college when we have holidays for 1 month during winter or 2.5 months during summer. What do you think?

• What some good PHP jobs?

  I am no professional PHP coder or anything, in fact I am fairly new. I can develop sites but nothing too crazy or fancy with PHP,Mysql,CSS,HTML,javascript. Up to now, all I have been doing is practice coding from books and websites. I am now looking for a 'real-life' experience. Besides going to a company and getting an interview, are there any other options in which I can get paid to code? I have posted some ads on craiglists but that's about it. And because this is my first time going to the 'real-word' and can make mistakes, am I liable if...a site I made for someone gets hacked and that person losses information?

  I am coding MS SQL 2005 trigger. I want to make some logging during trigger execution, using INSERT statement into my log table. When there occurs error during execution, I want to raise error and cancel action that cause trigger execution, but not to lose log records. What is the best way to achieve this? Now my trigger logs everything except situation when there is error - because of ROLLBACK. RAISERROR statement is needed in order to inform calling program about error. • Table View Page Control Code

  Hi Everyone this is what i want to achieve 1) Have a page control that allows user to do a swipe to 6 different pages 2) each page is a table view controller 3) everything is done via code NOT IB The tutorials that are i find either use VIEW CONTROLLER or is done via IB. I am not very good with IB and prefer to have everything done via coding. I have a TableViewController.h and TableViewController.m When the user navigate to the TableViewController view, my application will display a table view (filled with some information), when the user swip to the next page, another page (table view) will appear with another set of information... I am very new to objective-c and iphone programing...can some one pls guide me on how to achieve the above or is there another way to doing things? oh yar....i have a tab bar controller as my root controller...and for one of the tab (tab A) i have a navigation controller and my TableViewControllers falls inside tab A. • Dot Net Nuke app_offline randomly being generated

  We have had multiple DNN sites running for quite a few months now without any issues. Twice in the last 3 days our sites have gone offline by the addition of the app_offline.htm file in the root dir. There is only one developer with access to the sites at a coding / directory viewing level and the file is generated at weird times times when he is NOT accessing our network. We are not publishing anything to the server ( and have not published any .net code in days ), upgrading, changing code, or even modifying content. Has anyone run into this issue?

• Learning C++ from scratch in Visual Studio?

  I need to get up to speed with C++ quite quickly (I've never used it previously) - is learning through Visual Studio (i.e. Managed C++) going to be any use? Or will I end up learning the extensions and idiosyncracies of C++ in VS, rather then the language itself? If learning in VS is not recommended, what platform / IDE do you guys suggest? Edit: Can anyone elaborate on what VS will hide or manage for me when coding unmanaged C++? I really need to be learning things like pointers, garbage collection and all the nuts and bolts of the low level language.. does VS abstract or hide any of this kind of stuff from you? • How do you go from an abstract project description to actual code?

  Maybe its because I've been coding around two semesters now, but the major stumbling block that I'm having at this point is converting the professor's project description and requirements to actual code. Since I'm currently in Algorithms 101, I basically do a bottom-up process, starting with a blank whiteboard and draw out the object and method interactions, then translate that into classes and code. But now the prof has tossed interfaces and abstract classes into the mix. Intellectually, I can recognize how they work, but am stubbing my toes figuring out how to use these new tools with the current project (simulating a web server). In my professors own words, mapping the abstract description to Java code is the real trick. So what steps are best used to go from English (or whatever your language is) to computer code? How do you decide where and when to create an interface, or use an abstract class?

I have tried a half dozen quoted-printable parsers, but none handle this correctly. Honestly, for now, I'm coding: //TODO WTF encoded = encoded.Replace("=C2=A0", ""); Because I can't figure out why that text is there randomly within the MIME content, and isn't supposed to be rendered into anything. By just removing it, I'm getting the desired effect - but WHY?!

I'm developing a social networking site that will allow users to send an email to an email address that is for posting. This is the same thing Blogger does. This allows me to take a picture with my phone and send it to [email protected] and have it posted to my profile. The site is running IIS6 and I have full access to the server. Emails are currently being processed using the SMTP service that comes with Windows 2003 Server, but I can switch to another system without any issues. I am assuming I would have to somehow have the incoming emails either go into a folder that my application is watching or cause incoming emails to trigger a script. can anyone point me in the right direction?

  I am trying to implement a multi-tenant application, that is - data of all clients in a single database - each shared table has a tenant_id field to separate data I wish to achieve data separation by adding where('tenant_id = ', $user->getTenantID()) {pseudoc-code} to all SELECT queries I could not find any solution up-front, but here are possible approaches I am considering. 1) crude approach: customizing all fetchAll and fetchOne functions in every class (I will go mad!) 2) using listeners: possibly coding for the preDqlSelect event and adding the 'where' to all queries 3) override buildQuery(): could not find an example of this for front-end 4) implement contentformfilter: again need a pointer Would appreciate if someone could validate these & comment on efficieny, suitability. • [grails] attaching multiple files to a domain class

  I've seen various Grails plugins which allow easier handling of file uploads, however these tend only to support a single file per form-submit. I'd like a multi-attach form where as soon as you pick one file, an extra field and button is added using JS (various sites do it like this). Do you know of any good plugins which provide elegant uploading of multiple files without excessive coding? A progress bar either per-file of for the whole process would also be very nice. I don't know to what extent I can allow GORM to handle a java.io.File field (or in this case a Collection<File>).
