  • Can rails test speed be increased?

    Hi all, I'm a recent convert to TDD but as my codebase grows in size and complexity, I find myself waiting longer and longer periods for the framework to load every time I want to run a test. I am aware of rspec's spec_server but I'm using Test::Unit with shoulda. I tried Snailgun (http://github.com/candlerb/snailgun) but noticed very little increased in speed. I have also tried spork-testunit (http://github.com/timcharper/spork-testunit) but it's not fully compatible with my existing tests. The delay in running tests is a definite pain point and is putting me of TDD (at least with rails). Is anyone aware of any other options? thanks Sam

  • Visual Studio Unit Test failure to start

    Hi, I am having an issue when starting the tests under debug mode in Visual Studio 2008 Team Test where it gives the following error: "Failed to queue test run '{user@machinename}': Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I googled for the error but no joy. Don't even understand what it means as it is too brief. Has anyone come across this? Note that I can run tests fine if I am not debugging and I get the same error irrespective of the test I run.   • Faking user interaction on CMS

    I'm working with a CMS and need to import data to it using typical html forms. The data itself is in csv files with one page per row. Such is the CMS that importing directly to db isn't possible due to the complexity of the design. It's pretty important that i "fake" usual user interaction because the CMS does a lot of background work that's crucial for the import. Basically, for each row in the csv file, I need to copy a csv column to a html textfield, or select a checkbox, or click a certain button. One major issue is mapping the data in the csv to actions in the CMS. So if one column contains the string 'foobar' is really means "set the firstName dropdown widget to 'foobar'". Is there a tool to automate this? I´ve been looking at AutoHotKey, Selendium, Web-Harvester and many other tools but I'm not convinced they are the correct tools. The main problem is being able to interact with the html pages in a easy way.

  • How can I write a unit test to determine whether an object can be garbage collected?

    In relation to my previous question, I need to check whether a component that will be instantiated by Castle Windsor, can be garbage collected after my code has finished using it. I have tried the suggestion in the answers from the previous question, but it does not seem to work as expected, at least for my code. So I would like to write a unit test that tests whether a specific object instance can be garbage collected after some of my code has run. Is that possible to do in a reliable way ?   • Test if string is URL encoded in PHP

    Hey guys, I've looked through the PHP Docs and can't see anything to do with this, so how can I test if a string is URL encoded? Is it better to search the string for characters which would be encoded, which aren't, and if any exist then its not encoded, or use something like this which I've made function is_urlEncoded($string){ $test_string = $string; while(urldecode($test_string) != $test_string){ $test_string = urldecode($test_string); } return (urlencode($test_string) == $string)?True:False; } $t = "Hello World how are you?"; if(is_urlEncoded($sreq)){ print "Was Encoded.\n"; }else{ print "Not Encoded.\n"; print "Should be ".urlencode($sreq)."\n"; } Which works, however not in instances where this might occur $t = "Hello%2BWorld%2B%253E%2Bhow%2Bare%2Byou%253F"; I.e. where the string has been doubly encoded, or maybe this string $t = "Hello+World%2B%253E%2Bhow%2Bare%2Byou%253F"; I.e. where most has been doubly encoded, except for one space. (Yes I don't know when this string would ever occur, but you never know)

    Yes, it is possible to generate tests on boundary values for functions like "Sum" or "Divide". Pex is a good tool here. But more often we create tests on business behaviour. Let's consider example from classic Beck's tdd book: [Test] public void ShouldRoundOnCreation() { Money money = new Money(20.678); Assert.AreEqual(20.68,money.Amount); Assert.AreEqual(2068,money.Cents); } Can this test be generated? No :) 95 % of tests in my projects check business logic, and can not be generated. Pex (Especially in pair with Moles) can give 100% code coverage, but a high code coverage rate of a test suite does never indicate, that code is well tested - It only gives false confidence that everything is tested. And this is very dangerous. So, the question is - Is Pex really usefull tool?

  • How do I test how my client program will react to a web server error?

    I have a client program based on LibCurl. I have run into a situation where on some occasions a program on the server runs longer than the configured IIS timeout. IIS then terminates the program and returns a 502 error status to the client. I have added code to the client to capture this issue. Now, I need to find a way to prove that the change will work. I haven't been able to reliably reproduce the issue, so don't have a good test case. Any suggestions?

    I have been using MSpec to write my unit tests and really prefer the BDD style, I think it's a lot more readable. I'm now using Silverlight which MSpec doesn't support so I'm having to use MSTest but would still like to maintain a BDD style so am trying to work out a way to do this.     I'm running a unit test using the Django framework and get this error. Running the actual code does not have this problem, running the unit tests creates a test database on the fly so I suspect the issue lies there. The code that throws the error looks like this member = Member.objects.get(email=email_address) and the model looks like class Member(models.Model): member_id = models.IntegerField(primary_key=True) created_on = models.DateTimeField(editable=False, default=datetime.datetime.utcnow()) flags = models.IntegerField(default=0) email = models.CharField(max_length=150, blank=True) phone = models.CharField(max_length=150, blank=True) country_iso = models.CharField(max_length=6, blank=True) location_id = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True) facebook_uid = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True) utc_offset = models.IntegerField(null=True, blank=True) tokens = models.CharField(max_length=3000, blank=True) class Meta: db_table = u'member' there's nothing too odd there i can see. the user running the tests has the same permissions to the database server as the user that runs the website where else can I look to see what's going wrong, why is this table not being created?

    Hello, I'm writing a UI test case (using ActivityUnitTestCase) and would like to check if at a given time a View subclass is visible to the user. I've found the View#isShown() method, which claims to do exactly this - checking the visibility field of this element and all its parents - but somehow it always returns "false" for all the elements. I'll be grateful for some help. If it makes it easier, I can paste some code. Also, I found ViewAsserts#assertOnScreen(View origin, View view) but it doesn't seem to do the right thing either - always returns true. Am I perhaps calling it wrong: assertOnScreen(viewImTesting.getRootView(), viewImTesting)? Thanks, Jan

  • Google Web Optimizer -- How long until winning combination?

    I've had an A/B Test running in Google Web Optimizer for six weeks now, and there's still no end in sight. Google is still saying: "We have not gathered enough data yet to show any significant results. When we collect more data we should be able to show you a winning combination." Is there any way of telling how close Google is to making up its mind? (Does anyone know what algorithm does it use to decide if there's been any "high confidence winners"?) According to the Google help documentation: Sometimes we simply need more data to be able to reach a level of high confidence. A tested combination typically needs around 200 conversions for us to judge its performance with certainty. But all of our conversions have over 200 conversations at the moment: 230 / 4061 (Original) 223 / 3937 (Variation 1) 205 / 3984 (Variation 2) 205 / 4007 (Variation 3) How much longer is it going to have to run??
