  • R: simple and short if clauses for combind statements

    - by jorgusch
    Hello, TRUE/FALSE if clauses are easily and quickly done in R. However, if the argument gets more complex, it also gets ugly very soon. For instance: I might want to execute different operations for a row(foo) dependent on the value in one cell (foo[1]). Let the intervals be 0:39 and 40:59 and 60:100 Something like does not exit: (if foo[1] "in" 40:60){... In fact, I only see ways of at least two if clauses and two else statements and the action for the first interval somewhere at the bottom of the code. With more intervals(or any other condition) it is getting more complex. Is there a best practice (for this purpose or others) with a simple construction and nice design to read? Thanks a lot!

  • C++ include header conventions

    - by user231536
    Suppose I have a file X.h which defines a class X, whose methods are implemented in X.cc. The file X.h includes a file Y.h because it needs Y to define class X. In X.cc, we can refer to Y because X.h has already included Y.h. Should I still include Y.h in X.cc ? I understand that I don't need to and I can depend on header guards to prevent multiple inclusions. But on the one hand, including Y.h makes X.cc a little more independent of X.h (can't be completely independent of course). What is the accepted practice? Another example: including <iostream> in both .h and .cc files. I see some people do this and some don't.

  • How many databases to support eCommerce?

    - by Terry Lorber
    I have a system with two databases, one that the customer-facing website uses, the second that is used by the "backroom" order-fulfillment system. I've been asked to run queries from the website to the backroom system. I'd rather not, it seems risky to allow web-based request to run unheeded on the internal system. Additionally, this means opening up routing in the firewall to allow external connections to the internal server. What's the best practice for eCommerce? Run the entire company off of one database? Or individual databases for each system, and middleware to connect them? Sometimes it might be necessary for the web application to pull date from the internal system, but not based on an HTTP request from the internet. I'm sure the best answer is "it depends!" So, if people have a rule of thumb for when to use middleware and when not to, I'd like to here it.

  • Using static strings to define input field names in JSPs - good idea or not?

    - by Derek Clarkson
    Hi all, I've just be asked to work on a large portal project and have been looking through the established code. I keep finding this in the jsps: <input class="portlet-form-button" name="<%=ModifyUserProfile.FORM_FIRST_TIME_LOGIN_SUBMIT%>" type="submit" ... The authors are using static strings defined in classes to define the names of input fields and buttons in jsp forms. I've never seen this done before and was wondering if this is common practice. I'm inclined to think not, but I'm asking because, apart from centralising names which I would have thought are not likely to change, I can't see the reason why. Any thoughts on this?

  • Alert visualization recipe: Get out your blender, drop in some sp_send_dbmail, Google Charts API, add your favorite colors and sprinkle with html. Blend till it’s smooth and looks pretty enough to taste.

    - by Maria Zakourdaev
      I really like database monitoring. My email inbox have a constant flow of different types of alerts coming from our production servers with all kinds of information, sometimes more useful and sometimes less useful. Usually database alerts look really simple, it’s usually a plain text email saying “Prod1 Database data file on Server X is 80% used. You’d better grow it manually before some query triggers the AutoGrowth process”. Imagine you could have received email like the one below.  In addition to the alert description it could have also included the the database file growth chart over the past 6 months. Wouldn’t it give you much more information whether the data growth is natural or extreme? That’s truly what data visualization is for. Believe it or not, I have sent the graph below from SQL Server stored procedure without buying any additional data monitoring/visualization tool.   Would you like to visualize your database alerts like I do? Then like myself, you’d love the Google Charts. All you need to know is a little HTML and have a mail profile configured on your SQL Server instance regardless of the SQL Server version. First of all, I hope you know that the sp_send_dbmail procedure has a great parameter @body_format = ‘HTML’, which allows us to send rich and colorful messages instead of boring black and white ones. All that we need is to dynamically create HTML code. This is how, for instance, you can create a table and populate it with some data: DECLARE @html varchar(max) SET @html = '<html>' + '<H3><font id="Text" style='color: Green;'>Top Databases: </H3>' + '<table border="1" bordercolor="#3300FF" style='background-color:#DDF8CC' width='70%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='3'>' + '<tr><font color="Green"><th>Database Name</th><th>Size</th><th>Physical Name</th></tr>' + CAST( (SELECT TOP 10                             td = name,'',                             td = size * 8/1024 ,'',                             td = physical_name              FROM sys.master_files               ORDER BY size DESC             FOR XML PATH ('tr'),TYPE ) AS VARCHAR(MAX)) + '</table>' EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail @recipients = '[email protected]', @subject ='Top databases', @body = @html, @body_format = 'HTML' This is the result:   If you want to add more visualization effects, you can use Google Charts Tools https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/interactive/docs/index which is a free and rich library of data visualization charts, they’re also easy to populate and embed. There are two versions of the Google Charts Image based charts: https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/image/docs/gallery/chart_gall This is an old version, it’s officially deprecated although it will be up for a next few years or so. I really enjoy using this one because it can be viewed within the email body. For mobile devices you need to change the “Load remote images” property in your email application configuration.           Charts based on JavaScript classes: https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery This API is newer, with rich and highly interactive charts, and it’s much more easier to understand and configure. The only downside of it is that they cannot be viewed within the email body. Outlook, Gmail and many other email clients, as part of their security policy, do not run any JavaScript that’s placed within the email body. However, you can still enjoy this API by sending the report as an email attachment. Here is an example of the old version of Google Charts API, sending the same top databases report as in the previous example but instead of a simple table, this script is using a pie chart right from  the T-SQL code DECLARE @html  varchar(8000) DECLARE @Series  varchar(800),@Labels  varchar(8000),@Legend  varchar(8000);     SET @Series = ''; SET @Labels = ''; SET @Legend = ''; SELECT TOP 5 @Series = @Series + CAST(size * 8/1024 as varchar) + ',',                         @Labels = @Labels +CAST(size * 8/1024 as varchar) + 'MB'+'|',                         @Legend = @Legend + name + '|' FROM sys.master_files ORDER BY size DESC SELECT @Series = SUBSTRING(@Series,1,LEN(@Series)-1),         @Labels = SUBSTRING(@Labels,1,LEN(@Labels)-1),         @Legend = SUBSTRING(@Legend,1,LEN(@Legend)-1) SET @html =   '<H3><font color="Green"> '+@@ServerName+' top 5 databases : </H3>'+    '<br>'+    '<img src="http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?'+    'chf=bg,s,DDF8CC&'+    'cht=p&'+    'chs=400x200&'+    'chco=3072F3|7777CC|FF9900|FF0000|4A8C26&'+    'chd=t:'+@Series+'&'+    'chl='+@Labels+'&'+    'chma=0,0,0,0&'+    'chdl='+@Legend+'&'+    'chdlp=b"'+    'alt="'+@@ServerName+' top 5 databases" />'              EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail @recipients = '[email protected]',                             @subject = 'Top databases',                             @body = @html,                             @body_format = 'HTML' This is what you get. It can be used for applicative reports if you need high levels of customization that you cannot achieve using standard methods like SSRS. If you need more information on how to customize the charts, you can try the following: Image Based Charts wizard https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/image/docs/chart_wizard  Live Image Charts Playground https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/image/docs/chart_playground Image Based Charts Parameters List https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/image/docs/chart_params Java Script Charts Playground https://code.google.com/apis/ajax/playground/?type=visualization Use the above examples as a starting point for your procedures and I’d be more than happy to hear of your implementations of the above techniques. • CSS, HTML issue. How would I get the main body of the document to be a certain way down from the top?

    - by orano10000
    Basically I have a navbar and a title, that both have the properties, position: fixed; top: (VALUE I INSERTED); My problem is that obviously when I write the main body of the document the text is underneath the title/navbar. I need to get the text to be underneath the title and navbar, but without it having a fixed position. If any more information with code is needed, just comment saying so. Thanks in advance.

  • Array with nested values. Display in ul list. php html.

    - by btwong
    i have a record set returned from a data base that is looking like this: id | level | lft | rgt | title --------------------------------- 1 |    | 1 | 8 | title 1 2 | -  | 2 | 5 | sub title 1-1 3 | -- | 3 | 4 | sub sub title 1 4 | -  | 6 | 7 | sub title 1-2 5 |    | 9 | 12 | title 2 6 | -  | 10 | 11 | sub title 2 AS you can see its a hierarchy list, with left n right values. I am trying to display this record set in a list with the correct indentation, so that it appears like this: Title 1 Sub title 1-1 Sub sub title sub title 1-2 Title 2 sub title 2 Any pointers to do this with the one record set? Or should i use multiple queries to display this?

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 strange behavior

    - by Voice
    Hi Recently I installed VS 2010 Release (migrated from RC) and my MVC application is not working anymore. More concrete: I have a wizard with several steps for new customer account creation (Jquery form wizard, but it doesn't really matter). Each step contains a typed partial View for each part of account: Company, Customer, Licence, etc. When I submit the form I see really strange thing in ModelState. There are duplicate keys for Company: with "Company" prefix and without it. Something like this: [6] "Company.Phone" string [12] "Phone" string My model state for all these keys is not valid because Company is actually null and validation fails. When it was RC there were no such keys with "Company" prefix. So these keys in ModelState with prefix "Company" appeared after I installed VS Release. Here is my code: Main View <div id="registerSteps"> <div id="firstStep" class="step"> <fieldset> <legend><%=Html.Encode(Register.CustomerInfo) %></legend> <% Html.RenderPartial("CustomerInfo", ViewData["newCust"]); %> </fieldset> </div> <div id="secondStep" class="step"> <fieldset> <legend><%=Html.Encode(Register.CompanyInfo) %></legend> <% Html.RenderPartial("CompanyInfo", ViewData["newComp"]); %> </fieldset> </div> <div id="thirdStep" class="step"> <fieldset> <legend><%=Html.Encode(Register.LicenceInfo) %></legend> <% Html.RenderPartial("LicenceInfo", ViewData["newLic"]); %> </fieldset> </div> <div id="lastStep" class="step"> <fieldset> <legend><%=Html.Encode(Register.PrivacyStatement) %></legend> <% Html.RenderPartial("PrivacyStatementInfo"); %> </fieldset> </div> <div id="registerNavigation"> <input class="navigation_button" value="Back" type="reset"/> <input class="navigation_button" value="Next" type="submit"/> </div> </div> Two partial views (to show that they are actually identical): Company: <div id="dCompanyInfo"> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(company => company.Name, Register.CompanyName) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(company => company.Name) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(company => company.Name) %> </div> </div> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(company => company.Phone, Register.Phone) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(company => company.Phone) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(company => company.Phone) %> </div> </div> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(company => company.Fax, Register.Fax) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(company => company.Fax) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(company => company.Fax) %> </div> </div> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(company => company.Size_ID, Register.CompanySize) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.ValueListDropDown(company => company.Size_ID, (CodeRoad.AQua.DomainModel.ValueList)ViewData["CompSize"], (string)ViewData["Culture"]) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(company => company.Size_ID) %> </div> </div> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(company => company.Industry_ID, Register.Industry) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.ValueListDropDown(company => company.Industry_ID, (CodeRoad.AQua.DomainModel.ValueList)ViewData["Industry"], (string)ViewData["Culture"]) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(company => company.Industry_ID) %> </div> </div> </div> And for Customer <div id="dCustomerInfo"> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(customer => customer.Email, Register.Email) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(customer => customer.Email) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(customer => customer.Email) %> </div> </div> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(customer => customer.Male, Register.Gender) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.ListBoolEditor(customer => customer.Male, Register.Male, Register.Female, Register.GenderOptionLabel) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(customer => customer.Male) %> </div> </div> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(customer => customer.FirstName, Register.FirstName) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(customer => customer.FirstName) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(customer => customer.FirstName) %> </div> </div> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(customer => customer.LastName, Register.LastName) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.TextBoxFor(customer => customer.LastName) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(customer => customer.LastName) %> </div> </div> <div> <div> <%=Html.LocalizableLabelFor(customer => customer.Role_ID, Register.Role) %> </div> <div> <%=Html.ValueListDropDown(customer => customer.Role_ID, (CodeRoad.AQua.DomainModel.ValueList)ViewData["OrgRole"], (string)ViewData["Culture"]) %> <%=Html.ValidationMessageFor(customer => customer.Role_ID) %> </div> </div> </div> There are some home made extension methods, but they worked pretty well in previous version (VS RC). Html which is generated is also ok, no "Company.Phone"-like stuff. So I wonder, where all these keys with "Company" came from and what can I do with that? I appreciate any solution.

  • Html string replace a span's class doesn't work in IE?

    - by SeanJA
    Someone tried to recreate smarty in js: // actually from a template file, not hardcoded in the javascript html = '<span class="{test}">yay</span>'; html = change(html, 'test', 'foo bar'); function change(html, key, value){ html = html.replace('{'+key+'}',value); html = html.replace('%7B'+key+'%7D',value); return html; } element.innerHTML = html; In FF this works fine (as expected): yay In IE 7/8 and probably 6... it gives me this: <span class="foo" bar="">yay</span> Why does it create the extra attribute instead of doing what I expected it to do?

  • MVC's Html.DropDownList and "There is no ViewData item of type 'IEnumerable<SelectListItem>' that has the key '...'

    - by pjohnson
    ASP.NET MVC's HtmlHelper extension methods take out a lot of the HTML-by-hand drudgery to which MVC re-introduced us former WebForms programmers. Another thing to which MVC re-introduced us is poor documentation, after the excellent documentation for most of the rest of ASP.NET and the .NET Framework which I now realize I'd taken for granted. I'd come to regard using HtmlHelper methods instead of writing HTML by hand as a best practice. When I upgraded a project from MVC 3 to MVC 4, several hidden fields with boolean values broke, because MVC 3 called ToString() on those values implicitly, and MVC 4 threw an exception until you called ToString() explicitly. Fields that used HtmlHelper weren't affected. I then went through dozens of views and manually replaced hidden inputs that had been coded by hand with Html.Hidden calls. So for a dropdown list I was rendering on the initial page as empty, then populating via JavaScript after an AJAX call, I tried to use a HtmlHelper method: @Html.DropDownList("myDropdown") which threw an exception: System.InvalidOperationException: There is no ViewData item of type 'IEnumerable<SelectListItem>' that has the key 'myDropdown'. That's funny--I made no indication I wanted to use ViewData. Why was it looking there? Just render an empty select list for me. When I populated the list with items, it worked, but I didn't want to do that: @Html.DropDownList("myDropdown", new List<SelectListItem>() { new SelectListItem() { Text = "", Value = "" } }) I removed this dummy item in JavaScript after the AJAX call, so this worked fine, but I shouldn't have to give it a list with a dummy item when what I really want is an empty select. A bit of research with JetBrains dotPeek (helpfully recommended by Scott Hanselman) revealed the problem. Html.DropDownList requires some sort of data to render or it throws an error. The documentation hints at this but doesn't make it very clear. Behind the scenes, it checks if you've provided the DropDownList method any data. If you haven't, it looks in ViewData. If it's not there, you get the exception above. In my case, the helper wasn't doing much for me anyway, so I reverted to writing the HTML by hand (I ain't scared), and amended my best practice: When an HTML control has an associated HtmlHelper method and you're populating that control with data on the initial view, use the HtmlHelper method instead of writing by hand.

  • Emails from web site sometimes blank or gibberish

    - by John Gardeniers
    Our company has one web site with an online store based on osCommerce. The system sends emails for various reasons, such as password changes, order confirmations, etc., using PHP's mail() function. We occasionally have customers report that the email they received is either blank (email is plain text format) or gibberish (email is in HTML format). In the latter case it's really just HTML that's being displayed as raw text but of course the customers can't read it. In this case the first opening tag's <, and sometimes a few more characters, has gone missing. In an attempt to determine whether this was happening only for certain customers or email systems I configured the web site to send a CC of each message to a service account at my end. Those CC'd messages always arrive intact and display correctly in Outlook. For what it's worth, it seems to happen a little more frequently to Hotmail users but is certainly not limited to them. As the web site is on a shared (Debian) host there's precious little I can do about debugging things from that end, although if I made the right request I feel the hosting company staff would help me, even though they have limited resources to spend on such matters. Any suggestions on what else I might do to try and determine just why those emails are not being received correctly by some customers, yet a CC copy arrives just fine?

So, when I run this script, I want to make sure there is no html files in current dir. This is what I got: if ls *.html >/dev/null 2>&1; then echo 'clear HTML files first' exit fi Is there any easy way to check?

  • How do you keep your business rules DRY?

    - by Mario
    I periodically ponder how to best design an application whose every business rule exists in just a single location. (While I know there is no proverbial “best way” and that designs are situational, people must have a leaning toward one practice or another.) I work for a shop where they prefer to house as much of the business rules as possible in the database. This requires developers in many cases to perform identical front-end validations to avoid sending data to the database that will result in an exception—not very DRY. It grates me anytime I find myself duplicating any kind of logic—even lowly validation logic. I am a single-point-of-truth purist to an anal degree. On the other end of the spectrum, I know of shops that create dumb databases (the Rails community leans in this direction) and handle all of the business logic in a separate tier (in Rails the models would house “most” of this). Note the word “most” which implies that some business logic does end up spilling into other places (in Rails it might spill over into the controllers). In way, a clean separation of concerns where all business logic exists in a single core location is a Utopian fantasy that’s hard to uphold (n-tiered architecture or not). Furthermore, is see the “Database as a fortress” and would agree that it should be built on constraints that cause it to reject bad data. As such, I hold principles that cause a degree of angst as I attempt to balance them. How do you balance the database-as-a-fortress view with the desire to have a single-point-of-truth?

  • Php mail pulling form data from previous page

    - by Mark
    So I have a form being filled out on one php like so: <p> <label for="first_name">First Name: </label> <input type="text" size="30" name="first_name" id="first_name"/> </p> <p> <label for="last_name"> Last Name:</label> <input type="text" size="30" name="last_name" id="last_name"/> </p> <p> <label for="address_street">Street:</label> <input type="text" size="30" name="address_street" id="address_street"/> </p> <p> <label for="address_city">City:</label> <input type="text" size="30" name="address_city" id="address_city"/> </p> <p> <label for="address_state">State/Province:</label> <input type="text" size="30" name="address_state" id="address_state"/> </p> <p> <label for="email">Your e-mail: </label> <input type="text" size="30" name="email" id="email"/> </p> <p> <label for="phone">Your phone number: </label> <input type="text" size="30" name="phone" id="phone"/> </p> This is on one php page. From here, it goes to another php which part of it contains script to send a html email to recipient. Problem is, I cannot seem to get it to pull the variables even though I thought I declared them correctly and mixed them into the html correctly. <?php $first_name = $_POST['first_name']; $last_name = $_POST['last_name']; $to = "[email protected], [email protected]"; $subject = "HTML email for ALPS"; $message .= ' <html> <body> <div style="display: inline-block; width: 28%; float: left;"> <img src="http://englishintheusa.com/images/alps-logo.jpg" alt="ALPS Language School" /> </div> <div style="display: inline-block; width: 68%; float: right;"> <p style="color: #4F81BD; font-size: 20px; text-decoration: underline;">Thanks You For Your Inquiry!</p> </div> <div style="padding-left: 20px; color: #666666; font-size: 16.8px; clear: both;"> <p>Dear $first_name $last_name ,</p> </br > <p>Thank you for the following inquiry:</p> </br > </br > </br > </br > <p>****Comment goes here****</p> </br > </br > <p>We will contact you within 2 business days.   • Get Checked RadioButtons using JavaScript

    - by Rudi
    so I’m trying to build a win 8 app, which includes a WebView. The WebView contains the HTML code (+JavaScript) below. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC " -//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"> <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='yes'?> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv='Content-Type' content='text/html; charset=utf-8' > <script type='text/javascript'> function get_radio_value() { for (var i=0; i < document.myForm.frage1.length; i++) { if (document.orderform.frage1[i].checked) { var rad_val = document.myForm.frage1[i].value; return rad_val; } } } </script> <title>Kundenfragebogen</title> </head> <body> <h1>Kundenfragebogen</h1> <div id='myDiv'>Hello</div> <form name='myForm' action=''> <table border='2'> <tr> <td></td> <td>sehr gut</td> <td>gut</td> <td>schlecht</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Wie geht es Ihnen?</td> <td><input type='radio' name="frage1" value='1'/>Mir ging es noch nie besser!</td> <td><input type='radio' name="frage1" value='2'/>Es geht mir so wie immer.</td> <td><input type='radio' name="frage1" value='3'/>Heute geht einfach gar nichts…</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Können Sie Auto fahren?</td> <td><input type='radio' name="frage2" value='1'/>Ja</td> <td></td> <td><input type='radio' name="frage2" value='3'/>Nein</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Möchten Sie unseren Newsletter abonnieren?</td> <td><input type='radio' name="frage3" value='1'/>Ja</td> <td></td> <td></td> </tr> </table> <input type='button' value='Formular absenden' onclick="return get_radio_value()"/> </form> </body> </html> So the html contains some radio buttons and a button. I’ve used JavaScript ~2 years ago (just a little), so I don’t really know how to write the exact code. I’ve found something on the internet, but it doesn’t do what I want. I want to have the following: The user can check the RadioButtons. When the user clicks the Button, the JavaScript function should return all the checked radio buttons (I only need to know which RadioButton is checked). Since I know the name of the RadioButtons in my Windows 8 App, I can do the following: var object = WebView.InvokeScript("JavaScriptFunctionNAME", NameOfRadiobutton); So the WebView invokes the script and should get as a return the VALUE of the RadioButton, which is checked. “JavaScriptFunctionNAME” = name of the function in Javascript NameOfRadiobutton = the name of the RadioButton as a parameter (for example “frage1”). Currently I’m returning the value of the radiobutton, which is checked in the RadioGroup “frage1”. How can I check every RadioButton by it’s parameter? By this I mean I have a parameter “frage1” and return the value of the checked RadioButton. After this, I call the function again with the parameter “frage2” and return the checked RadioButtons value. Could anyone help me out with the JavaScript-function?

  • Expand <div> tag to bottom of page with CSS

    - by typoknig
    Hi all, I know this question gets asked a lot because I have looked at many "solutions" trying to get this to work for me. I can get it to work if I hack up the html but I want to use all CSS. All I want is a header with two columns below it, and I want these three items to fill the entire page/screen, and I want to do it with CSS and without frames or tables. The XAMPP user interface looks exactly how I want my page to look, but again, I do not want to use frames. I cannot get the two orangeish colored columns to extend to the bottom of the screen. I do have it so it looks like the right column extends to the bottom of the screen just by changing the body background color to the same color as the background color of the right column, but I would like both columns to extend to the bottom so I didn't have to do that. Here is what I have so far: HTML <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html dir="ltr" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>MY SITE</title> <meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="Content-Type" /> <link href="stylesheet.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> </head> <body> <div id="container"> <div id="masthead"> MY SITE</div> <div id="left_col"> Employee Management<br /> <a href="Employee%20Management.php">Add New Employee</a><br /> <a href="Employee%20Management.php">Edit Existing Employee</a><br /> <br/> Load Management<br /> <a href="Load%20Management.php">Log New Load</a><br /> <a href="Load%20Management.php">Edit Existing Load</a><br /> <br/> Report Management<br /> <a href="Report%20Management.php">Employee Report</a><br /> <a href="Report%20Management.php">Load Report</a></div> <div id="page_content"> <div id="page_content_heading">Welcome!</div> Lots of words</div> </div> </body> </html> CSS #masthead { background-color:#FFFFFF; font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:xx-large; font-weight:bold; padding:30px; text-align:center; } #container { min-width: 600px; min-height: 100%; } #left_col { padding: 10px; background-color: #339933; float: left; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: large; font-weight: bold; width: 210px; } #page_content { background-color: #CCCCCC; margin-left: 230px; padding: 20px; } #page_content_heading { font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:large; font-weight:bold; padding-bottom:10px; padding-top:10px; } a { color:#0000FF; font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size:medium; font-weight:normal; } a:hover { color:#FF0000; } html, body { height: 100%; padding: 0; margin: 0; background-color: #CCCCCC; }

    Here’s a list of sources of information for the different elements that comprise the 70-480 exam: General Resources http://www.w3schools.com (As pointed out in David Pallmann’s blog some of this content is unverified, but it is a decent source of information. For more about when it isn’t decent, see http://www.w3fools.com ) http://www.bloggedbychris.com/2012/09/19/microsoft-exam-70-480-study-guide/ (A guy who did a lot of what I did already, sadly I found this halfway through finishing my resources list. • What is the best practice to move sprites using mouse order in Tile games?

    - by Robin-Hood
    I am trying to make my first Tile-game using XNA. I have no problem drawing the map layers using TiledLib from codeplex, but, now I want to give sprite an (order) to move to a specific position on map, by selecting the sprite (left mouse click) and then right mouse click somewhere on the map to specify the target position. I don’t know what is the best practice to move sprite this way, considering that there may be collision objects in the direct path. what is the best practice to do this? Is there any demo covering this issue? thanks. BTW: I couldn’t upload snapshot because of my low score :(

  • Is reference to bug/issue in commit message considered good practice?

    - by Christian P
    I'm working on a project where we have the source control set up to automatically write notes in the bug tracker. We simply write the bug issue ID in the commit message and the commit message is added as a note to the bug tracker. I can see only a few downsides for this practice. If sometime in the future the source code gets separated from the bug tracking software (or the reported bugs/issues are somehow lost). Or when someone is looking in the history of commits but doesn't have access to our bug tracker. My question is if having a bug/issue reference in the commit message is considered good practice? Are there some other downsides?

  • Is using Javascript/JQuery for layout and style bad practice?

    - by Renesis
    Many, but not all, HTML layout problems can be solved with CSS alone. For those that can't, JQuery (on document load) has become very popular.* As a result of its ease, many developers are quick to use JQuery or Javascript for layout and style — even without understanding whether or not the problem can be solved with CSS alone. This is illustrated by responses to questions like this one. Is this bad practice? What are the arguments for/against? Should someone who sees this in practice attempt to persuade those developers otherwise? If so, what are the best responses to arguments in favor of JQuery saying it's "so easy"? * Example: Layouts that wish to use vertical layout flow of some kind often run into dead ends with CSS alone — this would include layouts similar to Pinterest, though I'm not sure that's actually impossible with CSS.

  • Is it a bad practice to include all the enums in one file and use it in multiple classes?

    - by Bugster
    I'm an aspiring game developer, I work on occasional indie games, and for a while I've been doing something which seemed like a bad practice at first, but I really want to get an answer from some experienced programmers here. Let's say I have a file called enumList.h where I declare all the enums I want to use in my game: // enumList.h enum materials_t { WOOD, STONE, ETC }; enum entity_t { PLAYER, MONSTER }; enum map_t { 2D, 3D }; // and so on. // Tile.h #include "enumList.h" #include <vector> class tile { // stuff }; The main idea is that I declare all enums in the game in 1 file, and then import that file when I need to use a certain enum from it, rather than declaring it in the file where I need to use it. I do this because it makes things clean, I can access every enum in 1 place rather than having pages openned solely for accessing one enum. Is this a bad practice and can it affect performance in any way?

  • What is the best practice to develop a visual component in Flex Hero?

    - by gavri
    What is the best practice to develop a visual component in Flex Hero? I do it like this: I consider a component has 2 "parts", the declarative part (the visual sub-components) which I define in the skin (just mxml) and the code part (event handlers...) which I define in an action script class. I load the skin in the ctor of the action script class. I also define skin parts, states, and I bind event handlers in the partAdded function. I am having an argument about this; that I should define the component purely in an .mxml, with listeners in the script tag, and maybe attach a skin (but the skin should be loose - maybe for reuse :-?) I come from .NET and maybe I am biased with the code behind pattern, and I am wondering from your experience and Adobe's intent, what is the best practice to usually implement a visual component?
