  • producing pixel-identical images of text between Sun Java and OpenJDK

    - by yuvi
My release script produces images of the version number to save me the trouble of manually going into the MoinMoin wiki software and changing it by hand for each release. Unfortunately, since the fonts look a little different on each platform's JVM, the result is ugly. I solved the the font inconsistency by using Lucide Sans (comes with every Java system). (Loading Fonts from TTF files was another option, but was buggy on Mac Java). The result is much better, producing the exact same image on Mac/Windows (), but a slightly different one on OpenJDK (). I believe this is caused by OpenJDK having a different font rendering system (as opposed to different fonts). Is there any way I can get all three of my target platforms (Sun Windows, Mac, OpenJDK Linux) to produce images of text that look identical?

  • Why does Java read its default settings from the system

    - by Bozho
Java is reading the locale, timezone and encoding information (and perhaps more) from the system it is installed on. This often brings bad surprises (brought me one just yesterday). Say your development and production servers are set to have TimeZone GMT+2. Then you deploy on a production server set to GMT. a 2-hour shift may not be easy to observe immediately. And although you can pass a TimeZone to your calendars, APIs might be instantiating calendars (or dates) using the default timezone. Now, I know one should be careful with these settings, but are easy to miss, hence make programs more error-prone. So, why doesn't Java have its own defaults - UTF-8, GMT, en_US (yes, I'm on non-en_US locale, but having it as default is fine). Applications could read the system settings via some API, if needed. Thus programs would be more predictable. So, what is the reason behind this decision?

  • Detecting your application's install path in Java?

    - by Danny King
Hi, I have made a small application in Java and I would like to make a windows installer for it using the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page). The application I made needs to save user preferences somewhere and it currently saves it in the user's home directory (e.g. c:\Users\danny or /home/users/danny). However if the windows installer installs the application to e.g. c:\Program Files\whatever\ I should probably save the preferences file there too, right? How would I detect that directory path in Java? What would be a good cross-platform approach to this without losing the benefits of a windows uninstaller for windows users e.g. start menu icons, installer option, etc? Should I just continue saving my preferences in the user's home path and clutter it up? Thanks very much,

  • Java Windows Service with Procrun, StopMethod problem

    - by mcdon
My Java class contains the following methods: public static void main(String[] argv) //start the service public static void stop() //stop the service I'm using Procrun from Apache Commons Daemon to setup the Java class as a Windows Service. I get an error when I try to stop the service "[618 javajni.c] [error] Static method 'void main(String[])' in Class com/caphyon/service/JavaService not found". The problem is I am trying to call the stop method when the service is shutting down, but it appears to override the StopMethod with 'void main(String[])'. Here are the stop and start parameters I am using when setting up the service: prunsrv.exe //US//JavaService --StartClass=com.caphyon.service.JavaService --StartMode=jvm --StartPath="C:\JavaService" prunsrv.exe //US//JavaService --StopClass=com.caphyon.service.JavaService --StopMode=jvm --StopPath="C:\JavaService" --StopMethod="void stop()" How do I set the StopMethod prunsrv will call when shutting down the service?

  • Java: why is declaration not sufficient in interface?

    - by HH
    Big class contains Format-interfcase and Format-class. The Format-class contains the methods and the interface has the values of the fields. I could have the fields in the class Format but the goal is with Interface. So do I just create dummy-vars to get the errors away, design issue or something ELSE? KEY: Declaration VS Initialisation Explain by the terms, why you have to init in interface. What is the logic behind it? To which kind of problems it leads the use of interface? Sample Code having the init-interface-problem import java.util.*; import java.io.*; public class FormatBig { private static class Format implements Format { private static long getSize(File f){return f.length();} private static long getTime(File f){return f.lastModified();} private static boolean isFile(File f){if(f.isFile()){return true;}} private static boolean isBinary(File f){return Match.isBinary(f);} private static char getType(File f){return Match.getTypes(f);} private static String getPath(File f){return getNoErrPath(f);} //Java API: isHidden, --- SYSTEM DEPENDED: toURI, toURL Format(File f) { // PUZZLE 0: would Stack<Object> be easier? size=getSize(f); time=getTime(f); isfile=isFile(f); isBinary=isBinary(f); type=getType(f); path=getPath(f); //PUZZLE 1: how can simplify the assignment? values.push(size); values.push(time); values.push(isfile); values.push(isBinary); values.push(type); values.push(path); } } public static String getNoErrPath(File f) { try{return f.getCanonicalPath(); }catch(Exception e){e.printStackTrace();} } public static final interface Format { //ERR: IT REQUIRES "=" public long size; public long time; public boolean isFile=true; //ERROR goes away if I initialise wit DUMMY public boolean isBinary; public char type; public String path; Stack<Object> values=new Stack<Object>(); } public static void main(String[] args) { Format fm=new Format(new File(".")); for(Object o:values){System.out.println(o);} } }

  • Try-Catch-Throw in the same Java class

    - by Carlos
Is it possible to catch a method in the current class the try-catch block is running on? for example: public static void arrayOutOfBoundsException(){ System.out.println("Array out of bounds"); } ..... public static void doingSomething(){ try { if(something[i] >= something_else); } catch (arrayOutOfBoundsException e) { System.out.println("Method Halted!, continuing doing the next thing"); } } If this is possible how will it be the correct way to call the catch method? If this is not possible, could anyone point me in the right direction, of how to stop an exception from halting my program execution in Java without having to create any new classes in the package, or fixing the code that produces ArrayOutOfBoundsException error. Thanks in Advance, A Java Rookie

  • RegEx for MetaMap in Java

    - by Christian
MetaMap files have following lines: mappings([map(-1000,[ev(-1000,'C0018017','Objective','Goals',[objective],[inpr],[[[1,1],[1,1],0]],yes,no)])]). The format is explained as mappings( [map(negated overall score for this mapping, [ev(negated candidate score,'UMLS concept ID','UMLS concept','preferred name for concept - may or may not be different', [matched word or words lowercased that this candidate matches in the phrase - comma separated list], [semantic type(s) - comma separated list], [match map list - see below],candidate involved with head of phrase - yes or no, is this an overmatch - yes or no ) ] ) ] ). I want to run a RegEx query in java that gives me the Strings 'UMLS concept ID', semantic type and match map list. Is RegEx the right tool or what is the most efficent way to accomplish this in Java?

  • Throw of a die in Java

    - by Arkapravo
The throw of a die is a popular program in Java, public class Die { /* This program simulates rolling a die */ public static void main(String[] args) { int die; // The number on the die. die = (int)(Math.random()*6 + 1); System.out.println (die); } // end main() } // end class What I wish to do is make it repeat, 500 times. I have not been able to put this program into a loop of 500. I usually program in Python, thus I guess my Java has rusted ! Any help is most welcome !

  • Out of memory error in java

    - by Anuj
I am getting OutOfMemoryError: java heap snippets of the method: { // step 1: I am creating a 2 dim array int totalCombination = (int) Math.pow(2.0, (double) vowelCount); here vowelCount > 10 // step2: initializing my array // step3: and using that array } My Question: each time this method is called, that array is getting created. Is it possible that the array is not getting released . In windows taskmanager i can see memory used by java is purely incremental. So it is not that at a point heap size is less, but memory is repetitively used and not released somehow. Please let me know if you need more detal. Please help to debug the error. Anuj

  • java regex illegal escape character error not occurring from command line arguments

    - by Shades88
This simple regex program import java.util.regex.*; class Regex { public static void main(String [] args) { System.out.println(args[0]); // #1 Pattern p = Pattern.compile(args[0]); // #2 Matcher m = p.matcher(args[1]); boolean b = false; while(b = m.find()) { System.out.println(m.start()+" "+m.group()); } } } invoked by java regex "\d" "sfdd1" compiles and runs fine. But if #1 is replaced by Pattern p = Pattern.compile("\d");, it gives compiler error saying illegal escape character. In #1 I also tried printing the pattern specified in the command line arguments. It prints \d, which means it is just getting replaced by \d in #2. So then why won't it throw any exception? At the end it's string argument that Pattern.compile() is taking, doesn't it detect illegal escape character then? Can someone please explain why is this behaviour?

  • Java Preprocessor in C#

    - by Olaseni
Say I want to create a sort of Pre-processor for existing java code, so I can get the language specific keywords and objects, and then create routines that convert them to their Csharp equivalents, using Csharp code - what route should this take? I'm thinking of Regular Expressions, but I'm fuzzed. I have a bunch of about a 100 .java files and I need to convert them to csharp code in record time. I have manually done just about five of them and I have serious headaches already. Or are there any tools out there that already do that?

  • Objective-C to Java cross compiler

    - by mvid
It is clear that cross compilers will not be allowed by the Apple App Store, so a developer will need to be familiar with Objective-C to create applications for the iPhone. I was wondering, is there a cross compiler that will take Objective-C application code and rebuild it into a similar Java application that can be packaged for Android? That way, a developer could still learn just one language (obj-c) but put out applications on many devices. I understand that the Java port would be less optimal than a natively coded application, but could conceivably save a developer some time.

  • How to debug Java code when using ANT script in Eclipse

    - by zengr
Hi, I have a java class and I need to debug it (put breakpoints and continue using F6). I am using ANT script to init, build, deploy and run the code. I am using: <javac srcdir="${src.dir}" destdir="${classes.dir}" debug="true" debuglevel="lines, vars, source"> .......... </javac> But when I place the breakpoint in a line in my foo.java class and I run the ant script (the run part, Right Click on run--Debug As--Ant Build), Eclipse does not stop at that line of code. What am I missing out?!

  • java equivalent to php's hmac-SHA1

    - by Bee
I'm looking for a java equivalent to this php call: hash_hmac('sha1', "test", "secret") I tried this, using java.crypto.Mac, but the two do not agree: String mykey = "secret"; String test = "test"; try { Mac mac = Mac.getInstance("HmacSHA1"); SecretKeySpec secret = new SecretKeySpec(mykey.getBytes(),"HmacSHA1"); mac.init(secret); byte[] digest = mac.doFinal(test.getBytes()); String enc = new String(digest); System.out.println(enc); } catch (Exception e) { System.out.println(e.getMessage()); } The outputs with key = "secret" and test = "test" do not seem to match.

  • Rewrite arrays using collections

    - by owca
I have a task, which I was able to do with the use of simplest methods - arrays. Now I'd like to go further and redo it using some more complicated java features like collections, but I've never used anything more complicated than 2d matrix. What should I look at and how to start with it. Should Tower become a Collection ? And here's the task : We have two classes - Tower and Block. Towers are built from Blocks. Ande here's sample code for testing: Block k1=new Block("yellow",1,5,4); Block k2=new Block("blue",2,2,6); Block k3=new Block("green",3,4,2); Block k4=new Block("yellow",1,5,4); Tower tower=new Tower(); tower.add(k1,k2,k3); "Added 3 blocks." System.out.println(tower); "block: green, base: 4cm x 3cm, thicknes: 2 cm block: blue, base: 6cm x 2cm, thicknes: 2 cm block: yellow, base: 5cm x 4cm, thicknes: 1 cm" tower.add(k2); "Tower already contains this block." tower.add(k4); "Added 1 block." System.out.println(tower); "block: green, base: 4cm x 3cm, thicknes: 2 cm block: blue, base: 6cm x 2cm, thicknes: 2 cm block: yellow, base: 5cm x 4cm, thicknes: 1 cm block: yellow, base: 5cm x 4cm, thicknes: 1 cm" tower.delete(k1); "Deleted 1 block" tower.delete(k1); "Block not in tower" System.out.println(tower); "block: blue, base: 6cm x 2cm, thicknes: 2 cm block: yellow, base: 5cm x 4cm, thicknes: 1 cm block: yellow, base: 5cm x 4cm, thicknes: 1 cm" Let's say I will treat Tower as a collection of blocks. How to perform search for specific block among whole collection ? Or should I use other interface ?
