• purpose of 3rd party mvc ?

  ive seen many third party mvcs or frameworks such as codeignitor , cakephp, and so on. what i want to know is what are their purposes? ive created my own framework call it an mvc or framework (in my opinion their all the same). in my framework i have all the classes in one folder called classes and all functions in another. its all organized and when a new project comes in i am able to complete it fast. i have looked at the applications that i mentioned and it seems to have huge articles and tutorials to study. what is the purpose? why not study the main language such as php, javascript/ajax or jquery, and so on then build something that you know the ins and outs of so that any project comes your way you know what to do. ive known some people who use cakephp and for every project they get stuck and need to figure out what to do. another guy i knew worked with joomla and every basic company website that came his way he would reverse engineer joomla to make it work with the site. are people using these applications because they lack knowledge in the languages? or sometimes have no choice but to make a site while lacking language and put something together.

• Suppress Eclipse compiler errors in in a plug-in

  Hi, I'm currently working on a plug-in for Eclipse that translates some custom Java code (which doesn't necessarily run/compile), to runnable Java code. In particular, the plug-in allows code to be written using classes created or imported during the translation. In general, the pre-translation code runs/compiles fine provided the writer uses import statements at the top of their class files. However, it would be convenient for my users if it was not necessary to import these classes. At the moment, the lack of import statements results in (obvious) compiler errors. Would it be possible to empower my plug-in to either a) suppress/ignore these errors, or b) have Eclipse find these classes automatically, without the use of import statements? I should point out that the translated code would these include the required import statements--but this is not a problem for me. I'm also aware that this could lead to lazy programmers and some bad habits. To clarify, consider the following example of pre-translated code: File f = new File("Somefilename.txt"); which clearly requires the possibly imported class File. Without an import statement (import java.io.File;), Eclipse reports that File can not be resolved to a type. This is the error I'd like to hide in files pertaining to projects created for use with my plug-in. (The translated code would include import java.io.File; so that it would be runnable) In closing, I should point out I'm not necessarily looking for code (though I wouldn't be opposed to it), but rather some links to some relevant tutorials (if they exist), or helpful tips/ideas. Also, as this is my first plug-in, it's entirely possible that what I'd like to do is not possible and that I don't realize it--if this is the case, please let me know, preferably with some justification. • jQuery dialog breaking after closing - I'm using dialog destroy

  I've got a few demo videos I've been making as tutorials, and I'm using a link to open a dialog box and put the demo video in that box. I use the same div to show other notes on the page when a user selects to view a complete note. The code I use to show the notes is jQuery('span.Notes').live('click', function(){ var note=jQuery(this).data('note'); jQuery('div#showNote').text(note); jQuery('div#showNote').append(''); jQuery('div#showNote').dialog({ modal: true, close: function(){ jQuery('div#showNote').dialog('destroy').empty(); } }); }); The code I use for the demo videos is VERY similar. jQuery('a.demoVid').click(function(){ var videoUrl=jQuery(this).attr('href'); jQuery('div#showNote').dialog({ modal: true, height: 400, width: 480, close: function(){ jQuery('div#showNote').dialog('destroy').empty(); } }); swfobject.embedSWF(videoUrl,'showNote','480','390','8.0.0'); return false; }); I can click on as many notes as I want, and the dialog opens up and shows the note. However, when I click the demoVid, the dialog opens, but then closing the dialog kills any other 'showNote' dialogs on the page, so I can't open any more notes, or demo videos.

• Why can't I create a database in an empty ASP MVC 2 project using Project->Add->New Item->SQL Server

  I'm diving head first into ASP MVC and am playing around with creating and manipulating a database. I did a search and found this tutorial for creating a database, however when I follow it, I get this error when trying to add a new database to my fresh, empty ASP MVC 2 project... A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) The only requirement the tutorial mentioned was SQL Server Express, but when I went to download it, it said it was already installed. I'm assuming it was part of the VS 2010 RC I installed and am running. So I don't know what else I need if I am missing something. This is all new to me, so I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here and after I'm done posting this question, I plan to do some more research into the topic of databases and how they work with ASP MVC. In the meantime, I was you could help me answer a couple high level questions... What am I missing/forgetting to do that is causing this error? Any suggestions for good resources/tutorials that focus on using databases with ASP MVC? I've done a lot of database programming in the past, so I'm familiar with the concepts of relational databases and the SQL language. I wish I could find a good resource for learning how to work with them in an ASP dev environment, as well as a good breakdown of all the related technologies used for working with them (i.e. LINQ to SQL). Thanks so much in advance for all your help! I'm going to start researching these questions right now.

• How to arrange business logic in a Kohana 3 project

  I'm looking for advice, tutorials and links at how to set up a mid-sized web application with Kohana 3. I have implemented MVC patterns in the past but never worked against a "formalized" MVC framework so I'm still getting my head around the terminology - toying around with basic examples, building views and templates, and so on. I'm progressing fairly well but I want to set up a real-world web project (one of my own that I've been planning for quite some time now) as a learning object. I learn best by example, but example-based documentation is a bit sparse for Kohana 3 right now - they say so themselves on the site. While I'm not worried about learning the framework as I go along, I want to make sure the code base is healthily structured from the start - i.e. controllers are split nicely, named well and according to standards, and most importantly the business logic is separated into appropriately sized models. My application could, in its core, be described as a business directory with a range of search and listing functions, and a login area for each entry owner. The actual administrative database backend is already taken care of. Supposing I have all the API worked out and in place already - list all businesses, edit business, list businesses by street name, create offer logged in as business, and so on, and I'm just looking for how to fit the functionality into a MVC pattern and into a Kohana application structure that can be easily extended. Do you know real-life examples of "database-heavy" applications like directories, online communities... with a log-in area built on Kohana 3, preferably Open Source so I could take a peek how they do it? Are there conventions or best practices on how to structure an extendable login area for end users in a Kohana project that is not only able to handle a business directory page, but further products on separate pages as well? Do you know any good resources on building complex applications with Kohana? Have you built something similar and could give me recommendations on a project structure?

• Is there a Standard or Best Practice for Perl Progams, as opposed to Perl Modules?

  I've written any number of perl modules in the past, and more than a few stand-alone perl programs, but I've never released a multi-file perl program into the wild before. I have a perl program that is almost at the beta stage and is going to be released open source. It requires a number of data files, as well as some external perl modules -- some I've written myself, and some from CPAN -- that I'll have to bundle with it so as to ensure that someone can just download my program and install it without worrying about hunting for obscure modules. So, it sounds to me like I need to write an installer to copy all the files to standard locations so that a user can easily install everything. The trouble is, I have no idea what the standard practice would be for this. I have found lots of tutorials on perl module standards, but none on perl program standards. Does anyone have any pointers to standard paths, installation proceedures, etc, for perl programs? This is going to be complicated by the fact that the program is multi-platform. I've been testing it in Linux, but its designed to work equally well in Windows.

• Interactive Web Collaboration Platform

  I am currently unsatisfied with most, if not all, web-based collaboration tools I've ever used. Examples of what I'm considering a "web-based collaboration tool" are TWiki, WebEx, etc. What I have in mind of developing is to develop my own. The target "market" is for software/hardware developers who will likely be working on separate projects linked by a common goal. Example: You work at a company who is designing a brand new printer. So, one man is working on the ink cartridge, another on the paper feed, one on the circuitry of the printer and one more is working on the drivers. What I would like to make (unless it already exists) is a website that, upon loading, presents the user with a web that has each project within it's own bubble, graphically. These bubbles would all be linked to the central bubble of "[Company Name]". Upon selecting an individual bubble the browser would focus and zoom in on that project bubble and expand more information (in bullets or with more affiliated bubbles) about subprojects, progress, setbacks, etc. Then, at a terminal "node" (i.e. a bubble with no sub-bubbles) a selection would then load a page with information relevant to that node. That's a lot of monologue. In short, I want to know how I might approach this. My background is with algorithmic use of Python and C++. I've never done interactive web design like this; though, I have gone through the W3C tutorials on HTML4/5. I'm willing to learn a new language I'm just wondering which language/set of languages seem(s) most appropriate for this project. Thanks, world, for imparting your knowledge to me. • How do I select the last XHTML <span> element with a particular class in XPath?

  My target XHTML document (simplified) is like the following: <html> <head> </head> <body> <span class="boris"> </span> <span class="boris"> </span> <span class="johnson"> </span> </body> </html> I'm trying to select the last of class "boris." The XPath expression //span[@class="boris"] selects all spans of class boris. How do I select the last one of these? I've tried //span[@class="boris" and last()] which doesn't work because last() here refers to the last span in the WHOLE DOCUMENT. How do I select all the spans of class boris... and then the last one of these? I've read 5 or 6 XPath tutorials and done a lot of Googling and I can't find a way to do this in XPath alone :( Thanks in advance for help :)

• Need Advice on designing ATL inproc Server (dll) that serves as both a soure and a sink of events.

  Hi, I need to design an ATL inproc server that besides exposing methods and properties, also can fire events (source) and serve as a sink for a third party COM control that fires events. I would assume that this is a fairly common requirement. I can also foresee several "gotchas" that I would like to read up on before commencing the design. My questions/concerns are: Can someone point me to an example? Which threading model to use? Should I have a seperate COM object for the sink? Should I, and how do I, protect certain memory. For example, my server will receive data from the third party control. It will save this, and in some cases, fire an event to interested clients. The interested clients will request the data through a standard method or property. I did try to research this myself. I can find many examples of COM servers that are soures, and some that are sinks, but never both. • Configure WebLogic MDB to listen to Foreing AMQ Server

  I'm trying to create an MDB(EJB 3.0) on WebLogic 10.3.5. to listen to a Queue in an external AMQ server. but after much work and combination of tutorials i get the followin error when deployin on WwebLogic. [EJB:015027]The Message-Driven EJB is transactional but JMS connection factory referenced by the JNDI name: ActiveMQXAConnectionFactory is not a JMS XA connection factory. Here is a brief of the work i have done: I have added the corresponding libraries to my WLS classpath (following thos tuturial http://amadei.com.br/blog/index.php/connecting-weblogic-and-activemq) and I have created the corresponding JMS Modules as indicated in the tutorial. As connection factory I have used ActiveMQConnectionFactory initially and ActiveMQXAConnectionFactory later, I also ignome the jms. notation an just put plain names as testQueue. Then create a simple MDB whit the following structure. I explicitly defined "connectionFactoryJndiName" property because otherwise it assumes a WebLogic connection factory which is not found an then raises an error. @MessageDriven( activationConfig = { @ActivationConfigProperty(propertyName = "destinationType", propertyValue = "javax.jms.Queue"), @ActivationConfigProperty(propertyName = "destination", propertyValue = "testQueue"), @ActivationConfigProperty(propertyName = "connectionFactoryJndiName", propertyValue = "ActiveMQXAConnectionFactory") }, mappedName = "testQueue") public class ROMELReceiver implements MessageListener { /** * Default constructor. */ public ROMELReceiver() { // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub } /** * @see MessageListener#onMessage(Message) */ public void onMessage(Message message) { System.out.println("Message received"); } } At this point I'm stuck with the error mentioned above. Even though I use ActiveMQXAConnectionFactory instead of simply ActiveMQConnectionFactory, JNDI resources tree in web logic server shows org.apache.activemq.ActiveMQConnectionFactory as class for my configured connection factory. am i missing something? or is this just a completely wrong way to connect WebLogic whith AMQ? • Is there a standard lexer/parser tool for Python?

  A volunteer job requires us to convert a large number of LaTeX documents into ePub format. It's a series of open-source fiction book which has so far only been produced only on paper via a print on demand service. We'd like to be able to offer the book to users of book-reader devices (such as Kindle) which require the ePub format for best results. Fortunately, ePub is a very simple format, however there's no trivial way for LaTeX to produce the XHTML outut required. We experimented with alternative LaTeX compilers (e.g. plastex) but in the end we figured that it would probably be a lot easier to simply write our own compiler which understands a tiny subset of the LaTeX language and compiles directly to XHTML / ePub. Previously I used a tool on Windows called GOLD. This allowed me to go directly from BNF grammars to a stub parser. It also alllowed me to implement the parser in any language I liked. (I'd choose Python). This product has to work on Linux, so I'm wondering if there's an equivalent toolchain that works as well under Ubutnu / Eclipse / Python. The idea is that we will take the grammar of TeX and just implement a teeny subset of that, but we do not want to spend a huge amount of time worrying about grammar and parsing. A parser generator would obviously save us a great deal of time. Sal UPDATE 1: Bonus marks for a solution with excellent documentation or tutorials.

• Throttling outbound API calls generated by a Rails app

  I am not a professional web developer, but I like to wrench on websites as a hobby. Recently, I have been playing with developing a Rails app as a project to help me learn the framework. The goal of my toy app is to harvest data from another service through their API and make it available for me to query using a search function. However, the service I want to pull data from imposes a rate limit on the number of API calls that may be executed per minute. I plan on having my app run a daily update which may generate a burst of API calls that far exceeds the limit provided by the external service. I wish to respect the performance of the external site and so would like to throttle the rate at which my app executes the calls. I have done a little bit of searching and the overwhelming amount of tutorial material and pre-built libraries I have found cover throttling inbound API calls to a web app and I can find little discussion of controlling the flow of outbound calls. Being both an amateur web developer and a rails newbie, it is entirely possible that I have been executing the wrong searches in the wrong places. Therefore my questions are: Is there a nice website out there aggregating Rails tutorials that has material related to throttling outbound API requests? Are there any ruby gems or other libraries that would help me throttle the requests? I have some ideas of how I might go about writing a throttling system using a queue-based worker like DelayedJob or Resque to manage the API calls, but I would rather spend my weekends building the rest of the site if there is a good pre-built solution out there already.

• OpenPeak Flash app XMLSocket Security Problem

  We're trying to create an app for OpenPeak. The Flash app will act as a client to a Java server on another computer on another domain. The Flash app client connects via XMLSocket. The Java Server uses ServerSocket to receive a request and send back a message. In order to trust the server, the Flash client needs a socket master policy file to tell it that the server comes from a trustworthy domain. According to an article on Adobe, when a connection has succeeded, the Flash client automatically requests the cross-domain policy or socket master policy file on port 843. Still, even when we implement it according to the tutorials and recommendations we have read, the Flash client continues to throw the following security error: SecurityErrorEvent type="securityError" bubbles=false cancelable=false eventPhase=2 text="Error #2048" We've tried logging the policy file request during testing to see if there was any call made to port 843. There was not. Interestingly, even without a policy file, the Flash client still manages to send the first data message to the server successfully. It's just when the server tries to send back a reply that the entire thing hangs for about 10 seconds before the security error above is displayed. Any ideas / suggestions?

• Running directx SDK samples on a Windows Mobile 6.1 device

  I tried to run the directx samples from ..\Windows Mobile 6 SDK\Samples\PocketPC\CPP\win32\directx\d3dm\tutorials on a Samsung Omnia and on the emulator and it doesn't work because of a deployment error. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and have installed Windows Mobile SDK Standard and Professional refresh. The device is correctly plugged in and set up for active sync (I know this because other samples work, also a creating Win32 smart device application and running it works). When I try to run a directx sample application it compiles without errors but the message: " There were deployment errors, Continue? Yes/No" appears If I manually copy the application from the debug folder to the device and run it from there, it works. The same deployment error message appears if I try it on an emulator. Other applications are deploying successfully. Is there any way to make the deployment work? Maybe there is an obscure option I need to set... What I do is: Connect the Mobile device to the PC, Open Visual Studio 2008, Open a directx sample project, Click Run (in Debug or Release mode).

• objective C architecture question

  Hey folks, I'm currently teaching myself objective C. I've gone through the tutorials, but I find I learn best when slogging through a project of my own, so I've embarked on making a backgammon app. Now that I'm partway in, I'm realizing there's some overall architecture things I just don't understand. I've established a "player" class, a "piece" class, and a "board" class. A piece theoretically belongs to both a player and the board. For instance, a player has a color, and every turn makes a move; so the player owns his pieces. At the same time, when moving a piece, it has to check whether it's a valid move, whether there are pieces on the board, etc. From my reading it seems like it's frowned upon to reach across classes. For instance, when a player makes a move, where should the function live that moves the piece? Should it exist on board? This would be my instinct, as the board should decide whether a move is valid or not; but the piece needs to initialize that query, as its the one being moved, no? Any info to help a noob would be super appreciated. Thanks guys!

  I've followed some tutorials on how to use Mod_Rewrite, but it's not working out. • Getting a "No default module defined for this application" exception while running controller unit t

  I have an application with the default directory structure, for an application without custom modules (see structure figure at the end). I have written a ControllerTestCase.php file as instructed in many tutorials, and I've created the appropriate bootstrap file as well (once again, see figures at the end). I've written some model tests which run just fine, but when I started writing the index controller test file, with only one test in it, with only one line in it ("$this-dispatch('/');"), I'm getting the following exception when running phpunit (but navigating with the browser to the same location - all is good and working): 1) IndexControllerTest::test_indexAction_noParams Zend_Controller_Exception: No default module defined for this application Why is this ? • How to wrap a thirdparty library COM class for notifications in a C++ project

  A thirdparty vendor has provided a COM interface as an external API to their product, and for sending instructions to it, it's fine with the mechanism of generating class wrappers with visual studio by importing from the dll, then creating instances of the created classes, calling their CreateDispatch(), using the access functions and releasing when done. For return notifications, I'd normally create an EventsListener class derived from IDispatch using the Invoke function to handle events returning from the interface. This vendor has created an Events lass which I have to wrap and expose, then explicitly tell the installation where to look. all the example are given is C# where it's really easy, but I'm struggling on how to do it in C++ in the C# example, the interop dll provided is simply added as a reference and derived into a class like so: using System; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; using System.Windows.Forms; using System.Text; using <THIER INTEROP LIB> namespace some.example.namespace { [ComVisible(true)] public class EventViewer : IEvents //where IEvents is their events class { public void OnEvent(EventID EventID, object pData) //overridden function { //event handled here } } } In broad terms I assume that I must create a COM interface, since they require a ProgID from me to instantiate, but how do I derive that's been wrapped by the import and then expose the created class to COM I'm just not sure where to even start, as all the tutorials I've seen so far talk in terms of creating brand new classes not wrapping a third party one

  For a new project I am thinking about whether to use OpenGL or Unity3d. I have a bit of experience with OpenGL, but I am completely new to Unity. I already read through the Unity documentation and tutorials on the Unity Website. However, I could not find a way to draw a simple Line-Strip with Unity. I want when this button is clicked that the data returned by the function search are displayed in the datagrid. • Using PHP to display button with hyperlink or greyed out button if no URL in database

  I've got a webpage that I'm working on where you click on a letter or category and it displays records matching that query from a database. One of the things I want to display is a hyperlinked button that says "Website" if the database record contains a URL in the 'URL' field, and if there is no value in that field, it will display a greyed out version of that button. I tried using an if...else statement, but was absolutely unable to get the syntax correct trying to get php to call up the 'URL' value in the middle of an "echo " So here's what I did: <?php if($row_rsmemalpha['URL'] != NULL) ?><a href="http://<?php echo ($row_rsmemalpha['URL']);?>"><target ="_blank"><img src="web_button_on.gif" alt="Website" border="0" height="18" width="103" /></target></a> <?php if($row_rsmemalpha['URL'] == NULL) echo "<img src=\"web_button_off.gif\" alt=\"No Website Available\" height=\"18\" width=\"103\" />"; ?> If there is a URL available it shows the button properly. But if there isn't a URL in the database it shows both buttons. I have spent a few days studying examples and tutorials on the web, but haven't found too much that helps. The buttons were completely non-functional when I started, so I'm pretty proud of getting this far with it! I've just run out of time and patience for more trial-and-error experimenting. • GridView: How can I get rid of extra space from my GirdView object?

  Hello, I'm writing an application for Android phones for Human vs. Human chess play over the internet. I was looking at some tutorials, to learn how to develop Android applications and found a very nice example of making galleries (it was a GridView usage example for making a gallery about dogs) and the idea came to draw the chess table using a GridView, because the example project also handled the point & click event and I intended to use the same event in the same way, but for a different purpose. The game works well (currently it's a hotseat version), however, I'm really frustrated by the fact that whenever I rotate the screen of the phone, my GridView gets hysterical and puts some empty space in my chess table between the columns. I realized that the cause of this is that the GridView's width is the same as its parent's and the GridView tries to fill its parent in with, but there should (and probably is) be a simple solution to get rid of this problem. However, after a full day of researching, I haven't found any clue to help me to make a perfect drawing about my chess table without a negative side effect in functionality. The chess table looks fine if the phone is in Portrait mode, but in Landscape mode it's far from nice. • What is your preferred tool stack for PHP development in the Windows Environment?

  I have been developing basic web sites for awhile now with some PHP thrown in for getting dynamic stuff done. However, I recently decided that it was time I got my hands a little dirtier so I wanted to start to play with the underpinnings of Wordpress and other such apps. I work on a Mac at home and have been using Coda for most of my editing needs and I love it. Also, to manage the services stack I use MAMP at home. However, I've begun to realize that for heavy PHP and Web work (AJAX, etc.), more is needed. I'm very interested to hear the kinds of tools more experienced web developers use on a day to day basis to manage the entire work flow. I found this article over on developer tutorials and decided to go with XAMPP (for the moment) for managing the services. However, IDE, Source Control, Debugger, etc. are all up for grabs. Anyway, your thoughts are much appreciated. And, if at all possible, try to describe your entire stack with what each tool fulfills for your development process.

It runs upon app startup when initializing the Core Data stack. I understand that a fix is to switch this to manual mapping and migration. What is the recipe to do that? The long way for me would be to go through all Apple docs, but I don't recall there being good examples and tutorials specifically for schema migration.
