  • Remote Debug Windows Azure Cloud Service

It introduced a lot of cool features but one of it shocked most, which is the remote debug support for Windows Azure Cloud Service (a.k.a. WACS).   Live Debug is Nightmare for Cloud Application When we are developing against public cloud, debug might be the most difficult task, especially after the application had been deployed. In order to minimize the debug effort, Microsoft provided local emulator for cloud service and storage once the Windows Azure platform was announced. By using local emulator developers could be able run their application on local machine with almost the same behavior as running on Windows Azure, and that could be debug easily and quickly. But when we deployed our application to Azure, we have to use log, diagnostic monitor to debug, which is very low efficient. Visual Studio 2012 introduced a new feature named "anonymous remote debug" which allows any workstation under any user could be able to attach the remote process. This is less secure comparing the authenticated remote debug but much easier and simpler to use. Now in Windows Azure SDK 2.2, we could be able to attach our application from our local machine to Windows Azure, and it's very easy.   How to Use Remote Debugger First, let's create a new Windows Azure Cloud Project in Visual Studio and selected ASP.NET Web Role. Then create an ASP.NET WebForm application. Then right click on the cloud project and select "publish". In the publish dialog we need to make sure the application will be built in debug mode, since .NET assembly cannot be debugged in release mode. I enabled Remote Desktop as I will log into the virtual machine later in this post. It's NOT necessary for remote debug. And selected "advanced settings" tab, make sure we checked "Enable Remote Debugger for all roles". In WACS, a cloud service could be able to have one or more roles and each role could be able to have one or more instances. The remote debugger will be enabled for all roles and all instances if we checked. Currently there's no way for us to specify which role(s) and which instance(s) to enable. Finally click "publish" button. In the windows azure activity window in Visual Studio we can find some information about remote debugger. To attache remote process would be easy. Open the "server explorer" window in Visual Studio and expand "cloud services" node, find the cloud service, role and instance we had just published and wanted to debug, right click on the instance and select "attach debugger". Then after a while (it's based on how fast our Internet connect to Windows Azure Data Center) the Visual Studio will be switched to debug mode. Let's add a breakpoint in the default web page's form load function and refresh the page in browser to see what's happen. We can see that the our application was stopped at the breakpoint. The call stack, watch features are all available to use. Now let's hit F5 to continue the step, then back to the browser we will find the page was rendered successfully.   What Under the Hood Remote debugger is a WACS plugin. When we checked the "enable remote debugger" in the publish dialog, Visual Studio will add two cloud configuration settings in the CSCFG file. Since they were appended when deployment, we cannot find in our project's CSCFG file. But if we opened the publish package we could find as below. At the same time, Visual Studio will generate a certificate and included into the package for remote debugger. If we went to the azure management portal we will find there will a certificate under our application which was created, uploaded by remote debugger plugin. Since I enabled Remote Desktop there will be two certificates in the screenshot below. The other one is for remote debugger. When our application was deployed, windows azure system will open related ports for remote debugger. As below you can see there are two new ports opened on my application. Finally, in our WACS virtual machine, windows azure system will copy the remote debug component based on which version of Visual Studio we are using and start. Our application then can be debugged remotely through the visual studio remote debugger. Below is the task manager on the virtual machine of my WACS application.   Summary In this post I demonstrated one of the feature introduced in Windows Azure SDK 2.2, which is Remote Debugger. It allows us to attach our application from local machine to windows azure virtual machine once it had been deployed. Remote debugger is powerful and easy to use, but it brings more security risk. And since it's only available for debug build this means the performance will be worse than release build.   • How to get Cinnamon working in Virtualbox?

    I installed Ubuntu 11.10 (32-bit) in VirtualBox 4.1.8. I wanted to install Cinnamon, so I did and I have the option to choose it from the login screen, as well as GNOME options. If I choose Ubuntu I get Unity, which works fine. GNOME also works. But when I choose Cinnamon, the screen goes black and nothing responds and I have to reset the virtual machine. I have already installed Ubuntu 11.10 (64-bit) onto the PC in a separate partition (currently running 10.10 but trying out 11.10) and in that Cinnamon works perfectly. In VirtualBox I have 3D settings enabled and gave the virtual machine 128 MB graphics RAM, and 1024 MB system RAM. What settings should I change or what should I do to get Cinnamon working in Ubuntu in VirtualBox? I have also tried doing it in LinuxMint 12, but I get the same problem, just a black screen when selecting Cinnamon. So are Cinnamon and VirtualBox incompatible?

  • DNS slowdowns on development environment

    I have a local development environment setup on my Mac. I am running an Ubuntu Web Server inside of a Virtual Box VM. I setup a host file on my Mac that points my dev site to the IP of the Ubuntu Virtual Server. Everything works good other than the fact a lot (not all) of the time it takes more than 5 seconds to load a page. I used firebug to track down where the problem is and when it's slow the DNS part of my request is taking over 5 seconds. Like I said it's not all the time. Sometimes it resolves and loads the page within milliseconds. The same page one click will be super fast and then the next time it takes over 5 seconds. It's really slowing me down and I am not sure what is causing it. Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be great. Thank

  • Role based access control in Oracle VM using Enterprise Manager 12c

    Enterprise Managers let’s you control any element in the environment and define which users can do what on each element. We will show here an example on how to set up RBAC (Role Base Access Control) for Oracle VM using Enterprise Manager, this will be a very simplified explanation  to help you get going. For more comprehensive explanations please refer to the Enterprise Manager User Guide. OK, first some basic Enterprise Manager terminology: Target – any element in the environment is a target – server, pool, zone, VM etc. Administrators – these are the Enterprise Manager users who can login to the platform. Roles – roles are privilege profiles which could be applied to Administrators. The first step will be to discover the virtual environment and bring it in to Enterprise Manager, this process is simple and can be done in two ways: Work on your Oracle VM manager, set it up until you feel comfortable and then register it in Enterprise Manager Use Enterprise Manager and build it all from there. In both cases we will be able to see the same picture from Oracle VM and from Enterprise Manager, any change made in one will be reflected in the other. Oracle VM Manager: Enterprise Manager: Once you have your virtual environment set up in Enterprise Manager it is time to start associating VMs with users (or Administrators as they are called in Enterprise Manager). Enterprise Manager allows us to connect to multiple different identity services and import users from them but the simplest way to add Administrators is just go to setup->security->Administrators and create new Administrator. The creation wizard will walk you through several stages and allow you to assign role(s) to your newly created Administrator, using roles can really shorten the process if done multiple times. When you get to “Target Privileges” stage, scroll down to the bottom to the “Target Privileges” section. In this section you can add targets (virtual machine in our case) and define the type of privileges you would like to assign to the Administrator which you are creating. In this example I chose one of the VMs and granted full privileges to the newly created Administrator. Administrator creation wizard "Target Privileges": Now when you login as the newly created administrator, you will only see the VM that was assign to you and will be able to have full control over it. That’s it, simple and straight forward, Enterprise Manager offers many more things which I skipped here but the point is that if you need role based access control Enterprise Manager can give it to you in a very easy way. Oh and one more thing, virtualization management in Enterprise Manager has no license cost, sweet.

  • Using Hadooop (HDInsight) with Microsoft - Two (OK, Three) Options

    Microsoft has many tools for “Big Data”. In fact, you need many tools – there’s no product called “Big Data Solution” in a shrink-wrapped box – if you find one, you probably shouldn’t buy it. It’s tempting to want a single tool that handles everything in a problem domain, but with large, complex data, that isn’t a reality. You’ll mix and match several systems, open and closed source, to solve a given problem. But there are tools that help with handling data at large, complex scales. Normally the best way to do this is to break up the data into parts, and then put the calculation engines for that chunk of data right on the node where the data is stored. These systems are in a family called “Distributed File and Compute”. Microsoft has a couple of these, including the High Performance Computing edition of Windows Server. Recently we partnered with Hortonworks to bring the Apache Foundation’s release of Hadoop to Windows. And as it turns out, there are actually two (technically three) ways you can use it. (There’s a more detailed set of information here: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/solutions-technologies/business-intelligence/big-data.aspx, I’ll cover the options at a general level below)  First Option: Windows Azure HDInsight Service  Your first option is that you can simply log on to a Hadoop control node and begin to run Pig or Hive statements against data that you have stored in Windows Azure. There’s nothing to set up (although you can configure things where needed), and you can send the commands, get the output of the job(s), and stop using the service when you are done – and repeat the process later if you wish. (There are also connectors to run jobs from Microsoft Excel, but that’s another post)   This option is useful when you have a periodic burst of work for a Hadoop workload, or the data collection has been happening into Windows Azure storage anyway. That might be from a web application, the logs from a web application, telemetrics (remote sensor input), and other modes of constant collection.   You can read more about this option here:  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsazure/archive/2012/10/24/getting-started-with-windows-azure-hdinsight-service.aspx Second Option: Microsoft HDInsight Server Your second option is to use the Hadoop Distribution for on-premises Windows called Microsoft HDInsight Server. You set up the Name Node(s), Job Tracker(s), and Data Node(s), among other components, and you have control over the entire ecostructure.   This option is useful if you want to  have complete control over the system, leave it running all the time, or you have a huge quantity of data that you have to bulk-load constantly – something that isn’t going to be practical with a network transfer or disk-mailing scheme. You can read more about this option here: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/solutions-technologies/business-intelligence/big-data.aspx Third Option (unsupported): Installation on Windows Azure Virtual Machines  Although unsupported, you could simply use a Windows Azure Virtual Machine (we support both Windows and Linux servers) and install Hadoop yourself – it’s open-source, so there’s nothing preventing you from doing that.   Aside from being unsupported, there are other issues you’ll run into with this approach – primarily involving performance and the amount of configuration you’ll need to do to access the data nodes properly. But for a single-node installation (where all components run on one system) such as learning, demos, training and the like, this isn’t a bad option. Read up on the best ways to use Hadoop for a given workload, understand the parts, write a little Pig and Hive, and get your feet wet. Then sign up for a test account on HDInsight Service, and see how that leverages what you know. If you're a true tinkerer, go ahead and try the VM route as well.   • Juju didn't configure rabbitmq for openstack?

    I have installed ubuntu Openstack HA with juju with all 24 servers. But my openstack is not working at all. On dashboard on every page I get errors saying "could not retrieve usage information", "could not retrieve volume information, "could not retrieve .....etc I spent hours and have discovered that juju has not done configuration correctly. I found that on cloud controller in nova.conf juju has added rabitmq vhost enrty, but that virtual host is not added in rabbitmq. Then how is its suppose to work? And on juju-gui canvas rabbimq is all green and is working fine, which in reality its not. I am really wondering if juju has really done correct configuration in all 24 servers now, I am getting the feeling that it would have been faster if I would have done openstack deployment manually instead of using juju. Why was the virtual host entry not added in rabbitmq? How should I solve this?

  • Installing Yaws server on Ubuntu 12.04 (Using a cloud service)

    I'm trying to get a Yaws web server working on a cloud service (Amazon AWS). I've compilled and installed a local copy on the server. My problem is that I can't get Yaws to run while running on either port 8000 or port 80. I've tried using paping to check if port 80 or 8000 is open(http://code.google.com/p/paping/) and I get a "Host can not be resolved" error, so obviously something isn't working.   • Trouble switching to Dvorak on Ubuntu 12.04

    I've decided to switch to Dvorak on my Ubuntu machine, but I'm having some trouble: First, I attempted to do this through the GUI -- System Settings - Keyboard Layout - add layout (plus sign) - English(programmer Dvorak). This didn't work at first, so I restarted my machine. It seemed to work at the password prompt (if only because QWERTY did not), but I couldn't get it to accept my password. I used the virtual keyboard option to enter my password with mouse clicks (the virtual keyboard was using the programmer's Dvorak Standard) and was able to get in that way. Once logged in, however, I was back to QWERTY. Second, I tried to switch on the command prompt -- $ loadkeys /usr/lib/kbd/keytables/dvorak.map The error message I received was "Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console " Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I've looked for a solution for these problems, but couldn't find anything.

Why does this stuff matter? Well, in general, virtualization (or cloud) solutions provide an easy way to create Virtual Machines. Whether it's through a "cloud api" or just a virtualization API. But all you end up with, in the end, is still just a Virtual Machine... Maybe with an OS pre-installed/pre-configured. So you have flexibility of moving VMs around and providing a VM but what about the actual applications (anything more than a very basic app)? The application administrator then still has to go and install and configure the OS for that application and install the application and its patches and basic configuration so that the application user then can go in. Building gold images for complex software stacks that are not owned by the users/admins is always very difficult. With our templates, we provide a number of things : Oracle Linux pre-installed and pre-configured with the minimum required packages for that application to run. (so it's secure) Oracle Linux can be distributed and used for free or with a support subscription. There is no trial license, there is no registration key, no alpha version or community version versus enterprise version. You get what we provide in our engineered systems, what we provide support for, without change. Supported out of the box. No virtual Trial appliances, no prototypes, no POC. What you download is production ready without change. The applications are installed by the developers of the application. The database team builds database templates, the applications engineering team builds applications templates. The first boot/configuration scripts ask for the basic information such as hostname, ip address, user passwords and then go off and set everything up correctly. All tested together - application - operating system - hypervisor. not 3 (or more) products from 3(or more) different companies.

  • Teacher demands excessive/unjustified use of Design Patterns

    I study computer science and I have a class called "Programming Techniques". Its purpose is to teach (us) good object oriented design principles. During the semester we have homeworks, programs that we must write to demonstrate what we've learned. The lab assistant demands for each of these homeworks that specific design patterns should be used. For example, the current homework is an application used for processing customer orders. We are demanded to use either "Factory Method" or "Abstract Factory" design patterns for this. It gets even worse: at the end of the semester we must write a program (something more complex) that must use at least one creational pattern, at least one structural pattern and at least one behavioural pattern. Is it normal to demand this ? I mean, forcing us to design our programs in such a way that a specific design pattern makes sense is just beyond what I consider ok. If I'm a car mechanic and have a huge tool box, then I will use a certain tool from that box if and when the situation demands it. Not more, not less. If my design of the application doesn't demand at all the use of "Abstract Factory" (for example), then why should I implement it ? I'm not sure yet if the senior lecturer agrees with what the lab assistant is demanding, but I want to talk to him about it and I need solid arguments to do so. How should I approach this problem with him ? PS: I'm sure there must be a better way to teach us these things. Maybe making us each week read about 3 design patterns and the next week giving us a test with small but specific programming or architectural situations/problems. The goal in that test would be to identify what design patterns would make sense and how they could be implemented. This way, he can see if we understand them. EDIT: These homeworks are not just 100-line programs, they have quite a lot of requirements and are fairly complicated. This is the reason we have about 2 - 3 weeks of deadline for each of them. I agree that practicing this is the best way to learn. But shouldn't smaller programs/applications be used for this ? Something just for demonstrating purposes. Not big programs with lots of requirements/classes/etc.

  • Fan control on Acer Aspire One D255 netbook

    I have Ubuntu netbook edition on my Acer Aspire One D255 netbook and I notice that I always hear the fan working at 100% despite the actual temperature. I run the sensors command its only at 13c, theres no reason why the fan needs to be running this hard at that temp. root@adam-netbook:~# sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +13.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) I'm guessing I may need some drivers in order to interact with the fan? Does anyone have any experience with this? It also seems that "sensors" may not be all that accurate, the temperature never seems to fluctuate.

  • Elastic PaaS with WebLogic and OpenStack, part I

    In my previous blog I described the steps to get OpenStack on Solaris up and running. Now we'll explore how WebLogic and OpenStack can work together to deliver truly elastic Middleware Platform as a Service. Middleware / Platform as a Service goals First, let's define what PaaS should be : PaaS offerings facilitate the deployment of applications without the complexity of managing the underlying hardware and software and provisioning hosting capabilities. To break it down: - PaaS provides a complete platform for hosting solutions (Java EE, SOA, BPM, ...) - Infrastructure provisioning (virtual machine, OS, platform) and managing is hidden from the PaaS user [administrator or developer] - Additionally, PaaS could / should define target SLAs, and the platform should ensure the SLAs are meet automatically. PaaS use case To make it more tangible, we have an IT Administrator who has the requirement to deploy a Java EE enterprise application. The application is used by external users who need to submit reports by the end of each month. As a result, the number of concurrent users will fluctuate, with expected huge spikes around the end of each month. The SLA agreed by the management is that no more than 100 requests should be waiting to be processes at any given time. In addition, the IT admin has no more than 3 days to have the platform and the application operational. The Challenges Some of the challenges the IT Administrator is facing are: - how are we going to ensure the processing power? - how are we going to provision the (virtual) machines, Java EE platform and deploy the application? - how are we going to monitor the SLA? - how are we going to react to SLA, and increase capacity?  The Ideal Solution Ideally, the whole process should be automated, "set it and forget" and require no human interaction: - The vendor packages the solution as deployable image(s) - The images are deployed to the IaaS - From there, automated processes take care of SLA  Solution Architecture with WebLogic 12c, Dynamic Clusters, OpenStack & Solaris OracleSolaris provides OS and virtualisation through Solaris Zones OpenStack is a part of Solaris 11.2 and provides Cloud Management (console and API) WebLogic 12c with Dynamic Clusters provides the Platform Trafic Manager provides load balancing On top of out that, we are going to implement a small control script - Cloud Manager - which is going to monitor SLA through WebLogic Diagnostic Framework. In case there are more than 100 pending requests, the script will: - provision a new virtual machine based on image which is configured for the WebLogic domain - add the machine to WebLogic domain - Increase the number of servers in dynamic cluster - Start the newly provisioned server  Stay tuned for part II The hole solution with working demo will be presented in one of our Partner WebCasts in June, exact date TBA.   • DNS slows down on development environment

    I have a local development environment setup on my Mac. I am running an Ubuntu Web Server inside of a Virtual Box VM. I setup a host file on my Mac that points my dev site to the IP of the Ubuntu Virtual Server. Everything works good other than the fact a lot (not all) of the time it takes more than 5 seconds to load a page. I used firebug to track down where the problem is and when it's slow the DNS part of my request is taking over 5 seconds. Like I said it's not all the time. Sometimes it resolves and loads the page within milliseconds. The same page one click will be super fast and then the next time it takes over 5 seconds. It's really slowing me down and I am not sure what is causing it.
