• Migrating a blog from Orchard 0.5 to 0.9

  My personal blog still runs on Orchard 0.5, because the theme that I used to build it is not yet available for more recent versions, but it is still very important for me to know that I can migrate all my content and comments to a new version at any time. Fortunately, Nick Mayne has been consistently shipping a BlogML module a few days after each of the Orchard versions shipped. Because the module gallery for each version is behind a different URL and is kept alive even after a new one shipped, it is very easy to install the module for both versions. Step 0: Setting up the migration environment In order to do the migration, I made a local copy of the production site on my laptop (data included: I'm using SQL CE) and I also created a new local site with a fresh install of Orchard 0.9. Step 1: Enable the gallery feature on both versions From the admin UI, go to Features and locate the Gallery feature under "Packaging". Enable it. You may now click on "Browse Gallery" on the 0.5 instance and "Modules" under "Gallery" for 0.9: Step 2: Install the BlogML module on both versions From the gallery page, locate the BlogML module and install it. Do it on both versions. Then go to Features and enable BlogML under "Content Publishing". Do it on both versions. Step 3: Export from the 0.5 version Click on "Manage Blog" then on "Export using BlogML" from the 0.5 version. The module then informs you of the path of the saved file: Step 4: Import into the 0.9 version From the 0.9 version, click "Import under "Blogs". Click the button to browse to the file that you just saved from 0.5. Then click "Upload file and Import" Step 5: Copy the 0.5 media folder into 0.9 Copy the contents of the 0.5 version's media folder into the media folder of the 0.9 version. Once that is done, you can delete the "Default/Blog Exports" subfolder. Step 6: Configure the target blog Click "Manage Blog", then "Blog Properties" and restore any properties you had on the source blog. For me, it was the title and URL as well as to set the blog as the home page and show it on the main menu: Step 7: Republish the new site to the production server Once this is done and everything works locally, you are ready to publish to the production site. I use FTP. Note: this should work just as well for any couple of versions for which the BlogML module exists, and not just for 0.5 and 0.9.

• Executing server validators first before OnClientClick Javascript confirm/alert

  I got to answer a simple question over community forums. Consider this: Suppose you are developing a webpage with few input controls and a submit button. You have placed some server validator controls like RequiredFieldValidator to validate the inputs entered by the user. Once user fill-in all the details and try to submit the page via button click you want to alert/confirm the submission like "Are you sure to modify above details?". You will consider to use javascript on click of the button.Everything seems simple and you are almost done. BUT, when you run the page; you will see that Javascript alert/confirm box is executing first before server validators try to validate the input controls! Well, this is expected behaviour. BUT, this is not you want. Then? The simple answer is: Call Page_ClientValidate() in javascript where you are alerting the submission. Below is the javascript example:    <script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">        function ValidateAllValidationGroups() {            if (Page_ClientValidate()) {                return confirm("Are you sure to modify above details?");            }        }    </script>Page_ClientValidate() function tests for all server validators and return bool value depends on whether the page meets defined validation criteria or not. In above example, confirm alert will only popup up if Page_ClientValidate() returns true (if all validations satisfy). You can also specify ValidationGroup inside this function as Page_ClientValidate('ValidationGroup1') to only validate a specific group of validation in your page.        function ValidateSpecificValidationGroup() {            if (Page_ClientValidate('ValidationGroup1')) {                return confirm("Are you sure to modify above details?");            }        }I have attached a sample example with this post here demonstrating both above cases. • Using Delegates in C# (Part 1)

  This post provides a very basic introduction of delegates in C#. Part 2 of this post can be read here. A delegate is a class that is derived from System.Delegate.  It contains a list of one or more methods called an invocation list. When a delegate instance is “invoked” with the arguments as defined in the signature of the delegate, each of the methods in the invocation list gets invoked with the arguments. On line 12, we create a new instance of this delegate which refers to a static method - SayNameInEnglish.  SayNameInEnglish has the same return type and parameter list as the delegate declaration.  Once a delegate is instantiated, the instance will always refer to the same target. Delegates are immutable. On line 13, we create a new instance of the delegate but point to a different static method. As you may recall, a delegate instance encapsulates an invocation list. You create an invocation list by combining delegates using the Delegate.Combine method (there is an easier syntax as you will see later). When two non null delegate instances are combined, their invocation lists get combined to form a new invocation list. This is done in line 14.  On line 16, we invoke the delegate with the Invoke method and pass in the required string parameter. Since the delegate has an invocation list with two entries, each of the method in the invocation list is invoked. If an unhandled exception occurs during the invocation of one of these methods, the exception gets bubbled up to the line where the invocation was made (line 16). If a delegate is null and you try to invoke it, you will get a System.NullReferenceException. We see the following output when the method is run: My name is TomJ'ai m'apelle Tom Instance Methods The code below outputs the same results as before. The only difference here is we are creating delegates that point to a target object (an instance of Translator) and instance methods which have the same signature as the delegate type. The target object can never be null. We also use the short cut syntax += to combine the delegates instead of Delegate.Combine. 1: public delegate void SayName(string name); 2: 3: public class Program 4: { 5: [STAThread] 6: static void Main(string[] args) 7: { 8: Translator translator = new Translator(); 9: SayName combinedDelegate = new SayName(translator.SayNameInEnglish); 10: combinedDelegate += new SayName(translator.SayNameInFrench); 11:  12: combinedDelegate.Invoke("Tom"); 13: Console.ReadLine(); 14: } 15: } 16: 17: public class Translator { 18: public void SayNameInFrench(string name) { 19: Console.WriteLine("J'ai m'appelle " + name); 20: } 21: 22: public void SayNameInEnglish(string name) { 23: Console.WriteLine("My name is " + name); 24: } 25: } A delegate can be removed from a combination of delegates by using the –= operator. Removing a delegate from an empty list or removing a delegate that does not exist in a non empty list will not result in an exception. Delegates are invoked synchronously using the Invoke method. We can also invoke them asynchronously using the BeginInvoke and EndInvoke methods which are compiler generated.

• Using PHP version 5.2 or 5.3 for commercial products?

  I'm doing research on what version of PHP to use when creating commercial scripts that will be sold to the public. Although the available stats aren't great, PHP 5.3 shows a 18.5% adoption rate. I'd like to use Symfony to create these scripts and it requires 5.3.2 which shows an even lower adoption rate (roughly 13% of that 18.5% use less than 5.3.2). Would I be risking much by jumping straight to PHP 5.3.2+ or should I ignore the stats and plough ahead?

  I’m an using Admin account on Windows 7 and try to attach umbraco database to my local SQL 2008 R2 instance. I’m getting the following error: Unable to open the physical file "D:\Tech\umbraco\build\App_Data\umbraco.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". • ASP.NET MVC Resource not found

  I am working on an MVC project in Visual Studio 2010 with .NET Framework 4.0 + MVC2 and everything works if I set the target framework to .NET 4.0. However, my host does not offer .NET 4.0 in order to deploy the site I need to get it working on .NET 3.5. I tried converting it to ASP.NET 3.5 and everything builds just fine except now when I try to load the homepage, I get a 404 Error saying: The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. • Include all php files in one file and include that file in every page if we're using hiphop?

  I understand that in normal php if we're including a file we're merging the source of it in the script and it would take longer for that page to be parsed/processed but if we're using HipHop shouldn't it be ok to just create one single php file and include every file in it (that contains some class) and every page which needs those classes (in separate file each) can just include one single php file? Would this be ok in presence of HipHop?
