• Webcrawler, feedback?

  Hey folks, every once in a while I have the need to automate data collection tasks from websites. Sometimes I need a bunch of URLs from a directory, sometimes I need an XML sitemap (yes, I know there is lots of software for that and online services). Anyways, as follow up to my previous question I've written a little webcrawler that can visit websites. Basic crawler class to easily and quickly interact with one website. Override "doAction(String URL, String content)" to process the content further (e.g. store it, parse it). Concept allows for multi-threading of crawlers. All class instances share processed and queued lists of links. Instead of keeping track of processed links and queued links within the object, a JDBC connection could be established to store links in a database. Currently limited to one website at a time, however, could be expanded upon by adding an externalLinks stack and adding to it as appropriate. JCrawler is intended to be used to quickly generate XML sitemaps or parse websites for your desired information. It's lightweight. • Should a new language compiler target the JVM?

  I'm developing a new language. My initial target was to compile to native x86 for the Windows platform, but now I am in doubt. I've seen some new languages target the JVM (most notable Scala and Clojure). Ofcourse it's not possible to port every language easily to the JVM; to do so, it may lead to small changes to the language and it's design. So that's the reason behind this doubt, and thus this question: Is targetting the JVM a good idea, when creating a compiler for a new language? Or should I stick with x86? I have experience in generating JVM bytecode. Are there any workarounds to JVM's GC? The language has deterministic implicit memory management. How to produce JIT-compatible bytecode, such that it will get the highest speedup? Is it similar to compiling for IA-32, such as the 4-1-1 muops pattern on Pentium? I can imagine some advantages (please correct me if I'm wrong): JVM bytecode is easier than x86. Like x86 communicates with Windows, JVM communicates with the Java Foundation Classes. To provide I/O, Threading, GUI, etc. Implementing "lightweight"-threads.I've seen a very clever implementation of this at http://www.malhar.net/sriram/kilim/. Most advantages of the Java Runtime (portability, etc.) The disadvantages, as I imagined, are: Less freedom? On x86 it'll be more easy to create low-level constructs, while JVM has a higher level (more abstract) processor. Most disadvantages of the Java Runtime (no native dynamic typing, etc.)

• C# webservice async callback not getting called on HTTP 407 error.

  Hi, I am trying to test the use-case of a customer having a proxy with login credentials, trying to use our webservice from our client. If the request is synchronous, my job is easy. Catch the WebException, check for the 407 code, and prompt the user for the login credentials. However, for async requests, I seem to be running into a problem: the callback is never getting called! I ran a wireshark trace and did indeed see that the HTTP 407 error was being passed back, so I am bewildered as to what to do.   I am trying to programmatically fire a key event to go left in a text box, but not having any luck. The input element has focus and the cursor is at the end. I'm trying to get the cursor to move left one step - before the letter "F". • Why is there no autorelease pool when I do performSelectorInBackground: ?

I suspect the parameter, but I don't know why the compiler complains about an NSCFNumber. Am I missing something? My Instance variables are all "nonatomic". Can that be a problem? UPDATE: I may also suspect that some variable has been added to an autorelease pool of the main thread (maybe an ivar), and now it trys to release that one inside the wrong autorelease pool? If so, how could I fix that? (damn, this threading stuff is complex ;) )

• Mongrel with Ruby 1.9.

  When starting the server, I get this strange error after updating to Ruby 1.9: " [BUG] cross-thread violation on rb_gc() ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11) [i386-mswin32] This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information. " My mongrel version is 1.1.6, which should be compatible with Ruby 1.9. I also still have the Ruby 1.8.6 installation, so i assume that for some reason mongrel tries to access that and kills ruby? My rails version is 2.3.4, in case it matters.

• Best way to detect similar email addresses?

  I have a list of ~20,000 email addresses, some of which I know to be fraudulent attempts to get around a "1 per e-mail" limit. ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc...). I want to find similar email addresses for evaluation. Currently I'm using a levenshtein algorithm to check each e-mail against the others in the list and report any with an edit distance of less than 2. However, this is painstakingly slow. Is there a more efficient approach? • Should we use NsMutableArray in CGRectIntersect ?

  To know whether two sprites cross each other or not, should we use NSMutableArray to store the sprites ? In my game one fixed sprite(player) is there. And the other is a bullet fired and if this sprite intersects player sprite, then enemy won. I have used NSMutable Array to store the bullet sprites. If I do not use NSMutableArray then even though the the bullet intersects player it is not recognizing the intersection ? I am using ( (CGRectIntersectsRect(bulletRect, playerRect)). Thank You.

• How do I abort a socket.recv() from another thread in python?

  I have a main thread that waits for connection. It spawns client threads that will echo the response from the client (telnet in this case). But say that I want to close down all sockets and all threads after some time, like after 1 connection. How would I do? If I do clientSocket.close() from the main thread, it won't stop doing the recv. • Not able to override CSS within IFrame

  I am using disqus comments for my jekyll blog with some CSS styles overriden in my stylesheet and used to work perfectly. Recently, disqus has introduced a new UI for their comments system which has completely broken the font colors. Since my site has dark background, I am trying to apply styles based on new disqus HTML structure generated. However, it seems that none of my styles get applied. It seems that is because disqus is loaded within iframe. Any ideas how can I fix the font colors. • Program crashes in debugger before anything happens

  I'm building an application for Windows XP using the MinGW tool chain and it sometimes crashes unexpectedly. So, I'm trying to use a debugger (Gdb) but the program exits with code 03 before anything happens. In fact, all I see from GDB is: [New thread 3184.0x7b8][New thread 3184.0xef8] Program exited with code 03. My suspicion is that there is some failed dynamic linking of a dependency (which are Qt, VTK, and ITK, all built with MinGW). However, this does not happen when I just run the program normally. Or if it happens, it appears to be intermittent and well after the program is launched and running. NOTE: I'm also using Cmake for cross compiling. What should I do? What can I try?

• Do I need Response.End() in ASP.Net 2.0

  Hi, I am just starting with ASP.Net. I copied a ex-co-worker's code (from .Net 1.1 era) and it has a Response.End(); in case of an error. There is also a: catch (Exception ex) { Response.Write(ex.Message); Response.End(); } at the end of Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) which always appends "Thread was aborted." or something like that at the end. I suspect that this worked differently before, or the error conditions were not tested very well. Anyhow, I was able to stop using Response.End(); in case when I do not like the GET parameters, and use return; instead. It seemed to do the right think in a simple case. Is this Ok in general? There are some problems with the code I copied, but I do not want to do a rewrite; I just want to get it running first and find wrinkles later. The Response.End(); caused a mental block for me, however, so I want to figure it out. I want to keep the catch all clause just in case, at least for now. I could also end the method with: catch (System.Threading.ThreadAbortException) { Response.End(); } catch (Exception ex) { Response.Write(ex.Message); Response.End(); } but that just seems extremely stupid, once you think about all of the exceptions being generated. Please give me a few words of wisdom. Feel free to ask if something is not clear. Thanks! P.S. Ex-coworker was not fired and is a good coder - one more reason to reuse his example.

• Can a 32-bit RHEL4 userland work with a 64-bit kernel?

  Is there a way to change an i386 RHEL4 machine to run an amd64 kernel, but ensure that it still builds software into same i386 binaries? On Debian this seems quite straightforward: just install an amd64 kernel (worst case, build one like this guy: http://www.debian-administration.org/users/jonesy/weblog/1) and prefix everything with "linux32". Then everything that considers uname -m will be unchanged, I just need to handle the few cases that consider uname -r. What is the Red Hat equivalent? Is the only way a full 64-bit installation on another disk and then chrooting back to the 32-bit system before anyone builds anything? (Even the best examples of that seem to be Debian-based.) Background: We make a large system that runs on (a variant of) i386 RHEL4. However, some of the larger RHEL build machines now have enough RAM that they might benefit from going 64-bit (for the kernel and maybe some of the bigger build steps). Our build system doesn't support cross-compilation.

But what I want to know is, is this legal? I've been supplied the font "Lubalin Graph Std" and told to use this for headers on the website I'm creating. I can upload the font file to fontsquirrel.com and use this to display headers in this font across the website - but I'm worried we'll get into trouble for doing this. What should I do?

• "Access is denied" error on accessing iframe document object

  For posting AJAX forms in a form with many parameters, I am using a solution of creating an iframe, posting the form to it by POST, and then accessing the iframe's content. specifically, I am accessing the content like this: $("some_iframe_id").get(0).contentWindow.document I tested it and it worked. On some of the pages, I started getting an "Access is denied" error. As far as I know, this shouldn't happen if the iframe is served from the same domain. I'm pretty sure it was working before. Anybody have a clue? If I'm not being clear enough: I'm posting to the same domain. So this is not a cross-domain request. I am testing on IE only. P.S. I can't use simple ajax POST queries (don't ask...)

• How can one make a web-site accessible only when someone has a dongle?

  Suppose you want to add an extra layer of credentials on top of a SSL-encrypted login/password, but you don't want to increase complexity to the user. Is there a way to add the requirement of the possession of a dongle to web-server authentication schemes with existing cross-platform browser capabilities? In other words, to get access to the web-site, you would need a username, password, and a USB dongle that has been plugged into the client computer. The dongle would presumably do some sort of challenge/response. It'd be ideal if this dongle solution worked with Firefox automatically or with the simple addition of a plugin. Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

  Hello everyone. I'll cut right to the chase. Right now I am developing a web based application. It has a PHP REST based architecture that serves up XML documents. On many of these documents attributes are hex encoded picture strings. On the client side jQuery AJAX fetches an XML document with a picture in it. I need to display said picture in some <img> tags. However my knowledge on such methods is lacking so here I am asking for help. Goal: JavaScript String variable in hex or base64 HTML displayed image.   Hi, I have started using Python for web development recently, it's kinda cool; I have seen programs that are developed in QT/C++, which is good enough in terms of esthetics; I have just noticed the new PySide project (which brings LGPL Qt license to Python and it doesn't support Windows yet). In view of the above, I see the possibility of using Python + PyQt/PySide to develop cross platform apps in the future :) but I have several doubts right now: Can PyQty/PySide be used to develop really complex/modern UI? Can somebody give me some points to have a look at some nice-looking screenshots of apps that are developed in Python+QT? What about the performance? Thanks in advance!

• C# Process Binary File, Multi-Thread Processing

  I have the following code that processes a binary file. I want to split the processing workload by using threads and assigning each line of the binary file to threads in the ThreadPool. Processing time for each line is only small but when dealing with files that might contain hundreds of lines, it makes sense to split the workload. My question is regarding the BinaryReader and thread safety. First of all, is what I am doing below acceptable. I have a feeling it would be better to pass only the binary for each line to the PROCESS_Binary_Return_lineData method. Please note the code below is conceptual. I looking for a but of guidance on this as my knowledge of multi-threading is in its infancy.
