  • In a distributed environment, how can I configure log4j to log to different files for each JVM insta

    My application runs on IBM WebSphere 6.1 Network Deployment. The application have several JSP files and Java classes. Today each host have only one JVM instance but my intention is to start another instance on each host. How can I configure log4j to log to different files for each JVM instance in the same host? I thought of using variable substitution on log4j XML configuration file but it only works with system properties. So, it is safe and recommended to set a custom system property just to store the JVM name? Anyone knows another strategy to achieve this in a 'elegant' way?

  • PHP Multiple Calls to Server Share Objects?

    I’m wondering this about PHP on Apache. Do multiple calls to the server from different users—could be sitting next to each other, in different states, different countries, etc…—share memory? For example, if I create a static variable in a PHP script and set it to 1 by default, then user1 comes in and it changes to 2, and then almost at the exactly same time, user2 comes in, does he see that static variable with a value of 1 or 2? An even better example is this class I have in PHP: class ApplicationRegistry { private static $instance; private static $PDO; private function __construct() { self::$PDO = $db = new \PDO('mysql:unix_socket=/........'); self::$PDO->setAttribute(\PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE, \PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION); } static function instance() { if(!isset(self::$instance)) { self::$instance = new self(); } return self::$instance; } static function getDSN() { if(!isset(self::$PDO)) { self::instance(); return self::$PDO; } return self::$PDO; } } So this is a Singleton that has a static PDO instance. If user1 and user2 are hitting the server at the exact same time are they using different instances of PDO or are they using the same one? This is a confusing concept for me and I'm trying to think of how my application will scale.

  • Writing to a log4net FileAppender with multiple threads performance problems

    TickZoom is a very high performance app which uses it's own parallelization library and multiple O/S threads for smooth utilization of multi-core computers. The app hits a bottleneck where users need to write information to a LogAppender from separate O/S threads. The FileAppender uses the MinimalLock feature so that each thread can lock and write to the file and then release it for the next thread to write. If MinimalLock gets disabled, log4net reports errors about the file being already locked by another process (thread). A better way for log4net to do this would be to have a single thread that takes care of writing to the FileAppender and any other threads simply add their messages to a queue. In that way, MinimalLock could be disabled to greatly improve performance of logging. Additionally, the application does a lot of CPU intensive work so it will also improve performance to use a separate thread for writing to the file so the CPU never waits on the I/O to complete. So the question is, does log4net already offer this feature? If so, how do you do enable threaded writing to a file? Is there another, more advanced appender, perhaps? If not, then since log4net is already wrapped in the platform, that makes it possible to implement a separate thread and queue for this purpose in the TickZoom code. Sincerely, Wayne

    I have a DAO that I'm trying to inject into a couple different places: @Repository public class FooDAO { @Autowired private HibernateManager sessionFactory; @PostConstruct public void doSomeDatabaseStuff() throws DataAccessException { ... } } And my application-context.xml is a fairly simple context:component-scan: <beans xmlns="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:context="http://www.springframework.org/schema/context" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans/spring-beans-2.0.xsd http://www.springframework.org/schema/context http://www.springframework.org/schema/context/spring-context-2.5.xsd" default-init-method="init" default-destroy-method="destroy"> <context:component-scan base-package="top.level"/> </beans> The DAO is accessed from a couple servlets in my application server through @Autowired properties. As far as I understand, anything annotated with @Repository should default to being a singleton and thus doSomeDatabaseStuff() should only be called once (as is my intention). The problem is that I'm seeing doSomeDatabaseStuff() called multiple times. What's going on here? Have I set something up incorrectly? I'm using spring 3.0.0. Thanks for the help.

  • NHibernate handling mutliple resultsets from a sp call

    I'm using a stored procedure to handle search on my site, it includes full text searching, relevance and paging. I also wanted it to return the total number of results that would have been returned, had paging not being there. So I've now got my SP returning 2 select statements, the search and just SELECT @totalResults. Is there any way I can get NHibernate to handle this? I'm currently accessing the ISession's connection, creating a command and executing the SP myself, and mapping the results. This isn't ideal, so I'm hoping I can get NH to handle this for me. Or if anyone has any other better ways of creating complicated searches etc with NH, I'd really like to hear it.

  • How to use JQUERY to filter table rows dynamically using multiple form inputs

    I'm displaying a table with multiple rows and columns. I'm using a JQUERY plugin called uiTableFilter which uses a text field input and filters (shows/hides) the table rows based on the input you provide. All you do is specify a column you want to filter on, and it will display only rows that have the text field input in that column. Simple and works fine. I want to add a SECOND text input field that will help me narrow the results down even further. So, for instance if I had a PETS table and one column was petType and one was petColor -- I could type in CAT into the first text field, to show ALL cats, and then in the 2nd text field, I could type black, and the resulting table would display only rows where BLACK CATS were found. Basically, a subset. If 10 rows are returned after applying one filter, the 2nd filter should only apply to THOSE 10 rows. I've tried LIVE and BIND, but not working. Can anyone shed some light on where I'm going wrong?     I just finished reading High-Latency, Low-Bandwidth Windowing in the Jupiter Collaboration System and I mostly followed everything until part 6: global consistency. This part describes how the system described in the paper can be extended to accomodate for multiple clients connected to the server. However, the explanation is very short and essentially says the system will work if the central server merely forwards client messages to all the other clients. I don't really understand how this works though. What state vector would be sent in the message that is sent to all the other clients? Does the server maintain separate state vectors for each client? Does it maintain a separate copy of the widgets locally for each client? The simple example I can think of is this setup: imagine client A, server, and client B with client A and client B both connected to the server. To start, all three have the state object "ABCD". Then, client A sends the message "insert character F at position 0" at the same time client B sends the message "insert character G at position 0" to the server. It seems like simply relaying client A's message to client B and vice versa doesn't actually handle this case. So what exactly does the server do?

So I have to run for each project the ant build file (a lot of clicks, and a waste of time). I got it working when i link a single Object file. But when i try to link multiple object files, i am getting error 'Unsatisfied forward or external declaration'.     Hi, I'm developing a user control called SearchBox, that will act as a replacer for ComboBox for multiple records, as the performance in ComboBox is low for this scenario, but I'm having a big binding problem. I have a base control with a DependencyProperty called SelectedItem, and my SearchControl shows that control so that the user can select the record. The SearchControl also has a DependencyProperty called SelectedItem on it, and it is being updated when the user selects something on the base control, but the UI, wich has the SearchControl, is not being updated. I used a null converter so that I could see if the property was updating, but it's not.     I have a many-to-many relationship with a link box, and I want to pull those models together into one form so I can update from the same page. I'm really struggling with getting the check_box to even show all the elements of my array - I've scoured the net and been working on this literally all day, and I'm finding it difficult to apply the information I'm reading to my problem. I'm also extremely new to RoR and I've been following a bit of an outdated video tutorial (pre 2.0) so apologies for my code. So far, I've got it to output only one key pair in the array (the last one) - although outside the form, the code used in the tutorial works exactly how it should. Thats of little use though! Host is the model for which the main form is for, and Billing is the outside model that I'm trying to add to the form.   • Need a design pattern for representing multiple information sources

    I'm building a Java application that retrieves information from differing information sources. I'm using a sensor, a set of RecordStores and a few online web services. In the basic application all these resources are loaded by default. Some of these sources are directly read in a separate thread (load database, read sensor etc.). From this basic application some functions are started that use these sources. The classes that contain these functions (usually combining multiple sources information) are currently paramterized with a set of resources like this: AppPart a1 = new AppPart(source1, source2, source3); I could also do it like this AppPart a1 = new AppPart(this); ..where I need to make my sources public in order to read them. I'm also thinking about a kind of stage/collection to publish all sources on, e.g: public SourceCollectionStage sStage = new SourceCollectionStage(); and later: sStage.getSensor(); .. for example. What do you guys think is the best or most often used way to do this? Btw: the user interface is often implemented by the specific funtion classes, not by the main class. Should I do this in another way?

  • Handling Incoming Mail to Multiple Recipients in PHP

    Alright, this may take a moment or two to explain: I'm working on creating an Email<SMS Bridge (like Teleflip). I have a few set parameters to work in: Dreamhost Webhosting PHP 5 (without PEAR) Postfix What I have right now, is a catch-all email address that forwards the email sent to a shell account. The shell account in turn forwards it to my PHP script. The PHP script reads it, strips a few Email Headers in an effort to make sure it sends properly, then forwards it to the number specified as the recipient. [email protected] of course sends an SMS to +1 (555) 123-4567. This works really well, as I am parsing the To field and grabbing just the email address it is sending to. However, what I realized that I did not account for is multiple recipients. For example, an email sent to both 5551234567 and 1235554567 (using the To line, the CC line, or any combination of those). The way email works of course, is I get two emails received, end up parsing each of them separately, and 5551234567 ends up getting the same message twice. What is the best way to handle this situation, so that each number specified in TO and CC can get one copy of the message. In addition, though I doubt its possible: Is there a way to handle BCC the same way?

    My question is essentially the same as this one: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1168047/polymorphic-association-with-multiple-associations-on-the-same-model However, the proposed/accepted solution does not work, as illustrated by a commenter later. I have a Photo class that is used all over my app. A post can have a single photo. However, I want to re-use the polymorphic relationship to add a secondary photo. Before: class Photo belongs_to :attachable, :polymorphic => true end class Post has_one :photo, :as => :attachable, :dependent => :destroy end Desired: class Photo belongs_to :attachable, :polymorphic => true end class Post has_one :photo, :as => :attachable, :dependent => :destroy has_one :secondary_photo, :as => :attachable, :dependent => :destroy end However, this fails as it cannot find the class "SecondaryPhoto". Based on what I could tell from that other thread, I'd want to do: has_one :secondary_photo, :as => :attachable, :class_name => "Photo", :dependent => :destroy Except calling Post#secondary_photo simply returns the same photo that is attached via the Photo association, e.g. Post#photo === Post#secondary_photo. Looking at the SQL, it does WHERE type = "Photo" instead of, say, "SecondaryPhoto" as I'd like... Thoughts? Thanks!
