  I have a Squid proxy server that controls all internet traffic for my network. I need a way to stop users from downloading big files (say 50MB) in my network. I banned some famous ports (e.g. torrent) but some downloads are possible by HTTP port. Obviously I cannot ban port 80! A simple solution is limiting maxmimum number of the simultaneous connections for each IP (e.g. 3 connections). It's possible in Squid with this config: acl ACCOUNTSDEPT 192.168.5.0/24 acl limitusercon maxconn 3 http_access deny ACCOUNTSDEPT limitusercon But this solution has really bad impact in web browsing, because any smart browser get different parts of a website by several connections simultaneously to speedup web browsing. But if we have a maximum number of connections, the browsers will fail to get some parts and the website will be shown partially and some parts/images/frames will not be shown. So, can we limit maximum number of persist connections? I think this policy will works: Specify Maximum number of connections that is alive for 10 seconds But Number of simultaneous connections for every IP is unlimited But how can we implement this policy when Squid? With which config? UPDATE: artifex and Tom Newton offered using a bandwidth-limiting approach to fight against downloaders. But bandwidth-limiting in Squid has a shortcoming: It's static and cannot dynamically change. So a person has a limited bandwidth not matter how many people are using internet (maybe nobody!) Also, this solution cannot help to stop people from downloading. They still can download but in a lower speed. But if we find a way to terminate persist connections (or any connection that is alive more than a specific time), downloading big files will be almost impossible (always there is some way!)

• Is this way of storing typed objects in memory good?

  This is an "is this okay, or can it be done better" question. Topic: Storing typed objects in memory. Background information: I'm building a compiler for the x86-32 platform for my language. My goal includes typed objects. Idea: Every primitive is a semi-class (it can be used as if it was a normal class, but it's stored more compact). Every class is represented by primitives and some meta-data (containing class-properties, inheritance stuff, etc.). The meta-data is complex: it doesn't use fields but instead context-switches. For primitives, the meta-data is very small, compared to a "real" class, which is alot bigger. This enables another idea that "primitives are objects", in my language, which I found nessecairy. Example: If I have an array of 32 booleans, then the pure content of this array is exactly 4 byte (32 bits of booleans). The meta-data will contain flags that the type is an array of booleans, which contains 32 entries. The meta-data is very compacted, on bit-level: using a sort of "packing" mechanism, which is read by a FSM at runtime, when doing inspection of the type (like when passing the object to methods for checking, etc.) For instance (read from left to right, top to bottom, remember vertical possition when going to the right, and check nearest column header for meaning of switch): Primitive? Array? Type-Meta 1 Byte? || Size (1 byte) 1 1 [...] 1 [...] done 0 2 Bytes? || Size (2 bytes) 1 [...] done || Size (4 bytes) 0 [...] done Integer? 1 Byte? 2 Bytes? 0 1 0 1 done 1 done 0 done Boolean?   I have a table Car in my db, one of the columns is purchaseDate. I want to be able to tag every car with a number of Policies (limited to 10 policies). Each policy has a time to life (ttl, a duration of time, like '5 years', '10 months' etc), that is, for how long since the car's purchaseDate the policy can be applied. I need to perform the following actions: when inserting a Car, it will be set with a number of Policies (at least one is set) sometimes a Car will be updated to add/remove a Policy searches must be done taking into account date/policies, for example: 'select all cars that are not covered by any policy as of today' My current design is (pol0..pol9 are the policies): CREATE TABLE Car ( id int NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1), purchaseDate datetime NOT NULL, //more stuff... pol0 smallint default NULL, pol1 smallint default NULL, pol2 smallint default NULL, pol3 smallint default NULL, pol4 smallint default NULL, pol5 smallint default NULL, pol6 smallint default NULL, pol7 smallint default NULL, pol8 smallint default NULL, pol9 smallint default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (id) ) CREATE TABLE Policy ( id smallint NOT NULL, name varchar(50) collate Latin1_General_BIN NOT NULL, ttl varchar(100) collate Latin1_General_BIN NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (id) ) The problem I am facing is that the sql to perform the query above is a nightmare to write. As I don't know in which column each policy can be, so I have to check all columns for every policy etc etc. So I am wondering wether it is worth changing this. My questions are: The smallint as Policy id was chosen instead of an 'int IDENTITY' in order to save some space as there are going to be millions of Car records. It just adds complexity when creating a Policy as we must handle the id etc. Was it worth doing this? I am thinking that maybe there is a much better design? Obviously we could move the policy/car relation to its own table CarPolicy, benefits would be: no limit on 10 policies per car adding/removing etc much easier when only the default policy is applied (when no others are applied one called Default policy is applied), we could signal that by not having any entry in CarPolicy, now this is just done inserting the Default policy id in one of the columns. The cons are that we would need to change the DB, ORM classes etc. What would you recommend? Maybe there is another smart way to implement this that we are not aware without using the CarPolicy table?

• ASP.NET: Dynamically enable or disable RequiredFieldValidator based on value of DropDownList

  I have an ASP.NET form with three text inputs, one each for "Work Phone", "Home Phone" and "Cell Phone". Each of these text inputs has a RequiredFieldValidator associated with it. I also have a DropDownList where the user can select the preferred phone type. I want to only require the field that is selected in the DropDownList. For example, if the user selects "Work Phone" from the DropDownList, I want to disable the RequiredFieldValidator for "Home Phone" and "Cell Phone", thereby only making the "Work Phone" field required. I have a method that enables and disables these validators based on the value of the DropDownList, but I cannot figure out when to call it. I want this method to run before the validation takes place on the page. How would I do that? Let me know if you need any more information. Thanks.

  I have been looking at game engine design (specifically focused on 2d game engines, but also applicable to 3d games), and am interested in some information on how to go about it. I have heard that many engines are moving to a component based design nowadays rather than the traditional deep-object hierarchy. Do you know of any good links with information on how these sorts of designs are often implemented? I have seen evolve your hierarchy, but I can't really find many more with detailed information (most of them just seem to say "use components rather than a hierarchy" but I have found that it takes a bit of effort to switch my thinking between the two models). Any good links or information on this would be appreciated, and even books, although links and detailed answers here would be preferred.

• WPF - DataGrid Column's ToolTip visibility based on the column's data length

  In my application, i have tried to implement the visibility of tooltip based on the dataGrid Column's text length by using a converter. I am facing some problems in displaying the toolTip text. In the ToolTip, TextBlock's text binding is not working. If its binded with some hard coded strings, it works fine. • Winforms role based security limitations

  I'm implementing role based security using Microsoft's membership and role provider. The theoretical problem I'm having is that you implement a specific role on a method such as: [PrincipalPermissionAttribute(SecurityAction.Demand, Role="Supervisor")] private void someMethod() {} What if at some point down the road, I don't want Supervisors to access someMethod() anymore? Wouldn't I have to change the source code to make that change? Am I missing something? It seems there has to be some way to abstract the relationship between the supervisors role and the method so I can create a way in the application to change this coupling of role permission to method. Any insight or direction would be appreciated. Thank you.

• WCF Data Services consuming data from EF based repository

  We have an existing repository which is based on EF4 / POCO and is working well. We want to add a service layer using WCF Data Services and looking for some best practice advice. So far we have developed a class which has a IQueryable property and the getter triggers the repository 'get all users' method. The problem so far have been two-fold: 1) It required us to decorate the ID field of the poco object to tell data service what field was the id. This now means that our POCO object is not 'pure'. 2) It cannot figure out the relationships between the objects (which is obvious i guess). I've now stopped this approach and i'm thinking that maybe we should expose the OBjectContext from the repository and use more 'automatic' functionality of EF. Has anybody got any advice or examples of using the repository pattern with WCF Data Services ?

• Setting a WebControls TabIndex based on the ControlId of another control

  I have an ASP.NET Webforms site that is regularly having features added. The majority of time a new WebControl is added to the page and I need to increment the TabIndex to all subsequent controls on the page. I'd prefer a more robust solution than choosing an arbitrary gap between the initial assigned tab indexes. Setting the tab indexes using the designer tab order functionality is one option but I'd prefer to stay in the source view. Ideally, if I had three check boxes I'd like to be able to define the tabindex based off the previous controls tabindex.   What is the simplest way to log the response-time for a restlet-based webservice? I want to make sure that our webservice has a reasonable response time. So I want to be able to keep an eye on response times, and do something about the requests that take too long. The closest thing I could find is this recipe: http://www.naviquan.com/blog/restlet-cookbook-log, it explains how to change the log format. But there doesn't seem to be a parameter for response times, so probably a completely different approach is needed.

  Is it possible to override a function based on the number of parameters that you are passing into it? For instance: function abc(name) { document.write ('My name is' + name); } function abc(name,friend) { document.write ('My name is' + name + 'and my best friend\'s name is' + friend); } So in the HTML if I just called abc(george) it would use the first version of the function, but if I called abc(george,john) it would use the second version.   I have a GridView, using a custom adapter (myAdapter extends BaseAdapter), where each item in the grid holds an ImageButton. getView() is working fine. However, from elsewhere in my code, how can I update the image (setImageResource) for one particular item in the grid based on its position in the GridView?   Hi, I am trying to substitute variable value inside array so as to update array values based on command line inputs. e.g. I am receiving IP address as command line argument for my TCL script and trying to update commands with recvd IP value. My array is: array set myArr { 1 myCmd1("192.268.2.1","abc.txt") 2 myCmd2("192.268.2.1","xyz.txt") 3 myCmd3("192.268.2.1","klm.txt") } Here, "192.268.2.1" will actually be supplied as command line argument. I tried doing array set myArr { 1 myCmd1($myIP,"abc.txt") 2 myCmd2($myIP,"xyz.txt") 3 myCmd3($myIP,"klm.txt") } and other combinations like ${myIP}, {[set $myIP]} but none is working.   Hi, I'm trying to create a CD-burning feature for a Java-based music player for my school project. Since I'm new to real-life programming (I've only learned to write codes on AP Computer Science A level), I don't know how I can apply the concepts I learned from APCS A to this task. A friend of mine who is studying computer science at graduate school told me to "look up the cd player control functions and add methods in those classes to read in data that you want to write to the CD, write it to a buffer, write everything in the buffer to the CD itself, clear the buffer and then write a new chunk of data into the buffer," but I can't quite grasp what this means, and tt's really hard to contact her right now because she's busy working on her dissertation. Expected result is like Name Salary PA 15000 (Pittsburgh + others(if any)) Pittusburgh 15000 (Accounts + HR) Accounts 11000 (Alex + Robin) Alex 6000 (direct values) Robin 5000 HR 4000 Robert 4000 In my production environment, hierarchy table may contain 23000+ rows and fact table may contain 300,000+ rows. So, I thought of providing any level of groupid to the query to retrieve just its children and its corresponding aggregated value. Any better solution?

• Professional jQuery based Combobox control?

  Are there any professional Combobox controls (dropdown list with autosuggestion) based on the jQuery library? It should be able to handle large datasets and have some skinning options. A multi-column result list would be great too. I'm working with ASP.NET, but it's a not a problem if I had to write a wrapper for it. I'm already using a third-party control, but I ran into some compatibilty issues between two vendor's controls. Well, I want to get rid of this kind of dependencies.

• Emacs Column based Narrowing or Folding

  Is there column based narrowing in emacs. I tend narrow in one everything between script tags but that still keeps the original indent (space before var). It would be great if I could actually column narrow to the the beginning of the indent since otherwise the electrict indent tries to bring it to column 0. var foo = 1; var bar = 2; Alternate solution could be to mark the starting indents as uneditable, but I am also not sure how to do this. P.S. I am aware of MMM and NXHTML and html-helper-modes, but I am not looking to use them due to complexities.

But since the ribbon bar is not getting refreshed dynamically we are unable to see the change on the Ribbon Bar. I heard from some blods we need to use callback methods for the same.   I need an algorithm that allows me to determine an appropriate <priority> field for my website's sitemap based on the page's views and comments count. For those of you unfamiliar with sitemaps, the priority field is used to signal the importance of a page relative to the others on the same website. It must be a decimal number between 0 and 1. The algorithm will accept two parameters, viewCount and commentCount, and will return the priority value. For example: GetPriority(100000, 100000); // Damn, a lot of views/comments!
