• Can't change brightness on Toshiba l755 laptop

  I have a Toshiba l755 laptop, and I installed 12.04 64bit on it. The default brightness of the laptop is set to maximum value, and I can't change it. If I go to Configuration ? Brightness, the brightness doesn't change and neither does pressing the function keys. I tried changing some parameters of grub file, setting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor". When changing the brightness from configuration, the value of /sys/class/backlight/toshiba/brightess changes, but screen remains the same. If I use the key functions, it changes the "actual_brightness" files. I don't know what else can I do, any suggestions?

• How to change harddrive spindown time?

  if I run my notebook on battery mode, ubuntu spindown my hardrive every few seconds. How can I fix that? I have tried it with sudo hdparm -S 127 /dev/sda* but I am not able to disable the spindown and can´t find the reason for this "bug". Running Ubuntu 12.04 - Bug is since 12.04 Recent updates are installed, the problem is still recent. I can change the settings via. sudo hdparm -B 127 but if I change hdparm.conf, Ubuntu does not recognize it. /dev/sda { apm_battery=127 }

  I need to change the hotkeys for volume control, since I suffer from a bug, which disallows me to use the standard function hotkeys of my notebook. Since I have updated I to Oneiric, I am not able to change the settings for the hotkeys. It is neither possible in system settings nor in gconf-editor. Current buggy configuration: Volume mute: Fn + F3 Volume down: Fn + F4 Volume up: Fn + F5 Desired configuration: Volume mute: Ctrl + F3 Volume down: Ctrl + F4 Volume up: Ctrl + F5 If you need further information, I will be happy to provide it. I tried to overwrite the standard settings by creating a new one in the “Custom shortcuts” category. Even this attempt is unsuccessful. Is there a possibility to access this menu as root?

• Best Timing for Windows AD Domain Name Change

  A while back when I first started with my company, the domain had already been set up using a "xxx.net" DNS name for the internal AD namespace. The shortname is just fine and I feel no need to change it but I have always hated how we used an internet DNS name for our internal AD. We are planning an AD upgrade from 2003 to 2008R2 and I would like to work this DNS name change if possible. I know there are procedures for doing a full domain name change but my question is: Is a FULL domain name change neccessary if all I want to change is the internal DNS name of the domain? Would it be better to do this change after the 2008R2 domain upgrade?

• How to change keyboard layout?

  I'm on ubuntu 12.04. Recently I bought a cheap apple style bluetooth keyboard. It pairs OK. I paired it with the current 102 key still attached. Anyway I noticed that the character mapping is incorrect. Most keys do not type anything - some keys on the right (k, l, ;') etc give numbers, but that's about it. So I rebooted, with 102 kbd unattached, and the bluetooth keyboard on, ready to connect. After boot at the login screen, the bluetooth keyboard had paired. I typed my password, and it logged in fine!! However after the user login was complete it reverted to the broken behaviour. A glance at the layout chart shows ubuntu thinks I still have the 102 layout, even though it remained disconnected. Any ideas? Thanks, Dave

  I am making the transition from windows 7 to ubuntu 13.04. I have ran ubuntu twice on my laptop and switched back to windows 7 namely becuase the orange and gray colors of ubuntu is just ugly. I know how to change ambiance to radiance but the gtk colors themselves SHOULD be customizable. I managed to do it once with 12.04 using kde's color manager but the thing wigged out on me. So please. is there a way to change 13.04's color scheme without downloading some theme that may or may not work? thank you.

• The Use-Case Driven Approach to Change Management

  In the third entry of the series on OUM and PMI’s Pulse of the Profession, we took a look at the continued importance of change management and risk management. The topic of change management and OUM’s use-case driven approach has come up in few recent conversations. So I thought I would jot down a few thoughts on how the use-case driven approach aids a project team in managing the project’s scope. The use-case model is one of several tools in OUM that is used to establish and manage the project's scope.  Because a use-case model can be understood by both business and IT project team members, it can serve as a bridge for ongoing collaboration as well as a visual diagram that encapsulates all agreed-upon functionality. This makes it a vital artifact in identifying changes to the project’s scope. Here are some of the primary benefits of using the use-case model as part of the effort for establishing and managing project scope: The use-case model quickly communicates scope in a straightforward manner. All project stakeholders can have a common foundation for the decisions regarding architecture and design and how they relate to the project's objectives. Once agreed upon, the model can be put under change control and any updates to the model can then be quickly identified as potentially affecting the project’s scope.  Changes requested or discovered later in the project can be analyzed objectively for their impact on project's budget, resources and schedule. A modular foundation for the design of the software solution can be established in Elaboration.  This permits work to be divided up effectively and executed in so that the most important and riskiest use-cases can be tackled early in the project. The use-case model helps the team make informed decisions about implementation priorities, which allows effective allocation of limited project resources.  This is very helpful in not only managing scope, but in doing iterative and incremental planning which relies heavily on the ability to identify project priorities. Bottom line is that the use-case model gives the project team solid understanding of scope early in the project.  Combine this understanding with effective project management and communication and you have an effective tool for reducing the risk of overruns in budget and/or time due to out of control scope changes. Now that you’ve had a chance to read these thoughts on the use-case model and project scope, please let me know your feedback based on your experience.

  So whenever I hit my dim/brighten keys on the keyboard, a notification bubble pops up with the screen brightness. All that's fine, but I would like to be able to change how much the brightness changes with each key press. For example, right now it takes just 5 presses to go from the completely dark to the brightest setting. However, I know from the "Brightness/Lock" setting that the screen is capable of much smaller intervals than this. Is there a way to change how much the brightness jumps each time the keys are pressed?

  When I'm working on my laptop I have periods that I am only using a couple of programs, so the default intellihide setting of the Launcher ('Dodge windows') is very handy. But I also have periods that I have to switch very often between programs, and then I find it very useful (and better for my workflow) that the Launcher doesn't hide. Now, every time I wan't to switch I have to open CCSM and change the setting (Unity plugin - Hide Launcher), but it would be easier if I could use a shortcut for it. So my question: Is there a way to create a shortcut to switch between (or change) the two settings of Compiz? I thought of command line interface to compiz, but I couldn't directly find something like that.

  Hopefully just a quick one. I've got a client that is changing the name of a workshop that they run. This means a change of url, page title for keywords that they have first page ranking on. The keywords are still relevant so what I want to avoid is a 301 redirect to a page that has different keywords to the previous page. Is the best option to keep the old page live with url and title and use a meta refresh to redirect after a period of time (not instant)? That way the SEO ranking is retained for the previous workshop name while they work on the ranking for the name change? Would a 301 redirect have an inverse effect? Thanks!

  I have accidentally typed my name wrong when I created the administrator account. Although I managed to change the user name at the login screen, I am unable to rename the /home/oldusername to /home/newusername. I tried most of the online tutorials, and it failed. The code I tried was this: usermod -l newusername -m -d /home/newusername oldusername But the output is: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later. How can I fix the issue and change the folder to newusername and expect all the applications to work as before?

What I'm looking for is an equivalent to changing the icon for an application in the launcher, i. e. the Home folder, via gedit ~/.local/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop That way you can set an icon type, which is helpful when you later want to change the icon set resp. theme or when you want the best resolution for each size of the icon. So, I know how I can do this for applications in the launcher - but how can I realize this for icon folders in Nautilus? (In which file these settings are stored and editable whith i. e. Gedit?)

  here's my problem: Ever since I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my computer I haven't been able to change the screen brightness, it was always set to the maximum. I did take a look at this post: Decrease Backlight Below Minimum And it helped me resolved the issue with the unbearable brightness, however one problem persists: I cannot change it through "Brightness & Lock" or the function buttons (F2 and F3), when I press the buttons, the animation shows up but nothing happens.   I'm behind NAT, so I can't access pool.ntp.org or Ubuntu's own time servers directly, and I'd like to change the time servers for my system. When googling, I find references to missing manpages like ntpd.conf(5) and ntpd(8), to a missing GUI for setting the time servers, and to a cron script (/etc/cron.daily/ntpdate) that doesn't seem to exist on my system. I've also found a reference to there being changes to ntpd.conf, so I'm hesitant to just create that file in /etc. How is one supposed to change the time servers in 11.10?

  I can't change the screen brightness on my laptop (Asus G53JW) with 12.10 installed. I have tried many ways to solve the problem, but nothing worked. I tried to edit grub with acpi_vendor and acpi_osi (I have tried all the combinations found on the ubuntu.org forum but still I can't change it. I even tried to add in xorg.conf the string: Option “RegistryDwords” “EnableBrightnessControl=1? Nothing changed. The only way to get it to work is to use nvidiabl but I have flickering problems with it and I'd like to find a way to solve the problem without external modules like nvidiabl.

  Hi! I have set up a NInject (using version 1.5) binding like this: Bind<ISessionFactory>().ToMethod<ISessionFactory>(ctx => { try { // create session factory, might fail because of database issues like wrong connection string } catch (Exception e) { throw new DatabaseException(e); } }).Using<SingletonBehavior>(); As you can see, this binding uses a singleton behavior but can also throw exception when something is not configured correctly, like a wrong connection string to the database. Now, when the creation of a session factory fails at first (throwing a database exception), NInject doesn't try to create the object again but always returns null. I would need NInject to check for null first and recreate when the instance is null, but of course not when there already is an instance successfully constructed (keeping it singleton). Like this: var a = Kernel.Get<ISessionFactory>(); // might fail, a = null // ... change some database settings var b = Kernel.Get<ISessionFactory>(); // might not fail anymore, b = ISessionFactory object Would I need to write a custom behavior or am I missing something else?   Here are 2 different versions of a program: this Program: #!/usr/bin/ksh printmsg() { i=1 print "hello function :)"; } i=0; echo I printed `printmsg`; printmsg echo $i Output: # ksh e I printed hello function :) hello function :) 1 and Program: #!/usr/bin/ksh printmsg() { i=1 print "hello function :)"; } i=0; echo I printed `printmsg`; echo $i Output: # ksh e I printed hello function :) 0 The only difference between the above 2 programs is that printmsg is 2times in the above program while printmsg is called once in the below program. My Doubt arises here: To quote Be warned: Functions act almost just like external scripts... except that by default, all variables are SHARED between the same ksh process! If you change a variable name inside a function.... that variable's value will still be changed after you have left the function!! But we can clearly see in the 2nd program's output that the value of i remains unchanged. But we are sure that the function is called as the print statement gets the the output of the function and prints it. So why is the output different in both?

I'm writing an application with multiple threads; I know that when a variable is shared between two or more threads, it is better to lock/unlock using a mutex to avoid deadlock and inconsistency of variables. The variable i, at the end of the executions, contains the integer 2. Anyway, there are some situations in which I don't know exactly where to put the two function calls. For example, suppose you have a function obtain(), which returns a global variable. I need to call that function from within the two threads. I have also two other threads that call the function set(), defined with a few arguments; this function will set the same global variable. The two functions are necessary when you need to do something before getting/setting the var. /** (0) */ /** Thread 1, or 2, or 3... */ if(obtain() == something) { if(obtain() == somethingElse) { // Do this, sometimes obtain() and sometimes set(random number) (1) } else { // Do that, just obtain().
