  • Differentiating between user script input formats

    - by KChaloux
I have a .NET project at work that provides a couple of (Iron)Python scripts to the customers, to allow them to customize the output of the program. The application generates code for certain machines, and supports a couple of different formats. Until recently, we only provided a script for one format. We're expanding upon that to include support for the others. If the user is using a script, they select their input script before generating the output code. A script designed for Format1 output is going to cause errors if they're trying to generate Format2 output. I need to deal with this. One option would just be to let the customers use common sense, and if they load the wrong script it will just fail, or worse, produce inaccurate data. I'm inclined to provide a little more protection than that. At the moment I'm considering putting a shebang-style comment line at the top of the script, ala: # OUTPUT - Format1 If the user tries to run a Format2 process with a Format1 script, it will warn them. Alternatively I could create different file extensions for the input scripts that vary by type. The file-type comment approach helps prevent the script from actually loading improperly, at the cost of failing to warn the user until they've already selected it, via a dialog box. Using different file extensions would allow me to cut down on visual clutter when providing a File Dialog, but doesn't actually stop them from loading the wrong script. So I'm really not sure if the right approach is to just leave it alone, or provide some safeguards.

  • Script to fill out time sheet on login

    - by Darren
Everyday at work when I come in I have to sign into a time-sheet. It's timestamped so I can't just say I came in at whatever time when I didn't. I want to write a script that runs on login (windows 7) and fills out the time I come in and such and another that says the time I'm leaving when I log out. I'm struggling to word this properly and am aware that I have worded it terribly but hopefully you guys know what I'm saying and can help me despite this. thanks in advance folks

  • Syntax error in Maya Python Script [on hold]

    - by Enchanter
Ok this error is immensly frustrating as it is obviously a simple syntax issue. Basically I've written two lines of maya script in python designed to create a list of the names of all the joints of a model currently selected in the model viewer. Here are the two lines of script: import maya.cmds joints = ls(selection = true, type = 'joint') Upon compiling the code the script editor is saying there is a syntax error in the second line, but I do not see any reason why this code should not execute?

  • How to input data into user defined variables into MySql query

    - by user292791
Simple Shell script echo "Enter 1 for month of March" echo "Enter 2 for month of April" echo "Enter 3 for month of May" read Month case "$Month" in 1) echo "enter establishment name" read a; mysql -u root -p $a < "March.sql";; 2) echo "enter establishment name" read b; mysql -u root -p $b < "April.sql";; 3) echo "enter establishment name" read c; mysql -u root -p $c < "May.sql";; esac done In this i have three other query files March.sql, April.sql, May.sql. i'm linking this in shell script . Example of .sql file: SELECT DISTINCT substr( a.case_no, 3, 2 ), b.case_type, b.type_name, a.case_no into outfile '/tmp/April.csv' FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' ENCLOSED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\r\n' FROM Civil_t AS a, Case_type_t AS b, disposal_proc AS c WHERE substr( a.case_no, 3, 2 ) = b.case_type AND a.date_of_decision BETWEEN '2014-04-01' AND '2014-04-30' AND a.case_no = c.case_no AND a.court_no =1; I have to alter the .sql script every time. Is there any method to read the variables from shell script and use it in mysql. For example:- echo "enter date" read a #input date Now i have read a "date" and i want to use it in March.sql query in where clause. Is there is any method of using this variable in .sql query.

  • C/C++ canonicaliser?

    - by A T
Are there any C/C++ automated canonicallisers? - Something like astyle but which makes your code more concise, rather than formats it? For example, to go from: float foo() { float a; float b; a = 9455.34; b = 3543.8; return a*b; } int main(void) { float b; b = foo(); return 0; } To: float foo(); // Automated prototype creation int main(void) { float b = foo(); return 0; } float foo() { return 9455.34*3543.8; } (this is my coding style FYI: to reduce the lines-of-code without sacrificing readability)

  • Print out the amount of times 2 words appear in the syslog. But also have it tell me how many times for each hour

    - by wolfspinone
So I'm trying to create a bash script that looks for two words in my syslog file. Then I want the script to print out how many times those two words have appeared. Also I want it to print it out for every hour of the day. So like if the word dog appeared 4 times during the first hour of today, it says Hour one, dog 4. Finally at the end of the script I want it to print out how many times those words appeared all day. The sudo code I have thus far is if 2 > hour find permit find block print both finish if 1 < hour < 2 find permit find block print both finish if 2 < hour < 3 find permit find block print both finish command is grep -o "\WORD\" Syslog.txt * | sort | uniq -c

  • What is the standard term for my role?

    - by sigil
I'm doing work that involves writing code and managing developers in a "special projects" division of a large company. I'd like to define my role better and figure out if there's an industry standard term for what I do, so that it will be easier for me to research best practices and work on a career path What I do all day: A macro that connects an Excel sheet to an Access database is acting funny; I get called in to figure out what's happening and debug it. Someone needs data extracted from a bunch of files on Sharepoint. I figure out a client-side solution because I'm not authorized to do anything server-side and getting IT to do anything would take several months and need a business case. A manager wants a new data entry tool for their team. I interview the manager and team members to work out the functional requirements, then design/develop/test the application. Someone needs a VBA script to crunch some data for their presentation that's due in two hours. I drop everything I'm doing to hack out a quick script and run the analysis, without much in the way of testing. A developer has been hired to build a database for one of the teams, since I'm working on too many different things and don't have time to take this project on in the timeframe required. I direct his work and push him to meet certain deadlines, interview stakeholders to get more info that will help him figure out how to build the necessary forms, and modify the functional requirements of the database to fit in the timeframe. Someone wants to load a set of data into a GIS system and set up an ongoing refresh and reporting of this data set. I facilitate the conversation between the GIS developers and the owners of this data set, and design a demo application as proof of concept. It's kind of an "all-purpose programming and IT management" position, but it's not officially IT because the company has an actual IT department with a rigorously defined system of submitting requests, developing code, and managing projects. What I do, I guess, is more of a handyman job, where stuff falls to me because I'm the geekiest one in the room. Is there a standard term in the software world for what I do?

  • Phishing attack stuck with jsp loginAction.do page? [closed]

    - by user970533
I 'm testing a phishing website on a staged replica of an jsp web-application. I'm doing the usual attack which involves changing the post and action field of source code to divert to my own written jsp script capture the logins and redirect the victim to the original website. It looks easy but trust me its has been me more then 2 weeks I cannot write the logins to the text file. I have tested the jsp page on my local wamp server it works fine. In staged when I click on the ok button for user/password field I'm taken to loginAction.do script. I checked this using tamper data add on on firefox. The only way I was able to make my script run was to use burp proxy intercept the request and change action parameter to refer my uploaded script. I want to know what does an loginAction.do? I have googled it - its quite common to see it in jsp application. I have checked the code; there is nothing that tells me why the page always point to the .do script instead of mine. Is there some kind of redirection in tomcat configuration. I like to know. I'm unable to exploit this attack vector? I need the community help

  • What are modern and old compilers written in?

    - by ulum
As a compiler, other than an interpreter, only needs to translate the input and not run it the performance of itself should be not that problematic as with an interpreter. Therefore, you wouldn't write an interpreter in, let's say Ruby or PHP because it would be far too slow. However, what about compilers? If you would write a compiler in a scripting language maybe even featuring rapid development you could possibly cut the source code and initial development time by halv, at least I think so. To be sure: With scripting language I mean interpreted languages having typical features that make programming faster, easier and more enjoyable for the programmer, usually at least. Examples: PHP, Ruby, Python, maybe JavaScript though that may be an odd choice for a compiler What are compilers normally written in? As I suppose you will respond with something low-level like C, C++ or even Assembler, why? Are there compilers written in scripting languages? What are the (dis)advantages of using low or high level programming languages for compiler writing?

  • How to make an application scriptable in Linux

    - by arx
I've written an application in C++ that takes a complex binary file format and translates it into human-readable text. Having edited the text you can recompile it back into the binary file format. This would be more useful if the application's internal object model was scriptable. On Windows I'd expose the objects using COM or .Net but I want this to work on Linux. I could embed a scripting language but that's a fair bit of work, and limits users to the scripting language I choose. Ideally, I'm looking for some way of exposing a scriptable DOM from my application that is: Widely support in scripting languages (without writing language-specific wrappers) Cross-platform (but Linux support is most important) In-process (but this isn't essential)

  • Bash Shell Scripting Errors: ./myDemo: 56: Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string [EDITED]

Could someone take a look at this code and find out what's wrong with it? #!/bin/sh while : do echo " Select one of the following options:" echo " d or D) Display today's date and time" echo " l or L) List the contents of the present working directory" echo " w or W) See who is logged in" echo " p or P) Print the present working directory" echo " a or A) List the contents of a specified directory" echo " b or B) Create a backup copy of an ordinary file" echo " q or Q) Quit this program" echo " Enter your option and hit <Enter>: \c" read option case "$option" in d|D) date ;; l|L) ls $PWD ;; w|w) who ;; p|P) pwd ;; a|A) echo "Please specify the directory and hit <Enter>: \c" read directory if [ "$directory = "q" -o "Q" ] then exit 0 fi while [ ! -d "$directory" ] do echo "Usage: "$directory" must be a directory." echo "Re-enter the directory and hit <Enter>: \c" read directory if [ "$directory" = "q" -o "Q" ] then exit 0 fi done printf ls "$directory" ;; b|B) echo "Please specify the ordinary file for backup and hit <Enter>: \c" read file if [ "$file" = "q" -o "Q" ] then exit 0 fi while [ ! -f "$file" ] do echo "Usage: \"$file\" must be an ordinary file." echo "Re-enter the ordinary file for backup and hit <Enter>: \c" read file if [ "$file" = "q" -o "Q" ] then exit 0 fi done cp "$file" "$file.bkup" ;; q|Q) exit 0 ;; esac echo done exit 0 There are some syntax errors that I can't figure out. However I should note that on this unix system echo -e doesn't work (don't ask me why I don't know and I don't have any sort of permissions to change it and even if I wouldn't be allowed to) Bash Shell Scripting Error: "./myDemo ./myDemo: line 62: syntax error near unexpected token done' ./myDemo: line 62: " [Edited] EDIT: I fixed the while statement error, however now when I run the script some things still aren't working correctly. It seems that in the b|B) switch statement cp $file $file.bkup doesn't actually copy the file to file.bkup ? In the a|A) switch statement ls "$directory" doesn't print the directory listing for the user to see ? #!/bin/bash while $TRUE do echo " Select one of the following options:" echo " d or D) Display today's date and time" echo " l or L) List the contents of the present working directory" echo " w or W) See who is logged in" echo " p or P) Print the present working directory" echo " a or A) List the contents of a specified directory" echo " b or B) Create a backup copy of an ordinary file" echo " q or Q) Quit this program" echo " Enter your option and hit <Enter>: \c" read option case "$option" in d|D) date ;; l|L) ls pwd ;; w|w) who ;; p|P) pwd ;; a|A) echo "Please specify the directory and hit <Enter>: \c" read directory if [ ! -d "$directory" ] then while [ ! -d "$directory" ] do echo "Usage: "$directory" must be a directory." echo "Specify the directory and hit <Enter>: \c" read directory if [ "$directory" = "q" -o "Q" ] then exit 0 elif [ -d "$directory" ] then ls "$directory" else continue fi done fi ;; b|B) echo "Specify the ordinary file for backup and hit <Enter>: \c" read file if [ ! -f "$file" ] then while [ ! -f "$file" ] do echo "Usage: "$file" must be an ordinary file." echo "Specify the ordinary file for backup and hit <Enter>: \c" read file if [ "$file" = "q" -o "Q" ] then exit 0 elif [ -f "$file" ] then cp $file $file.bkup fi done fi ;; q|Q) exit 0 ;; esac echo done exit 0 Another thing... is there an editor that I can use to auto-parse code? I.e something similar to NetBeans?

  • javascript conflict on accesing DOM

    - by justjoe
i read this statement from a book i read The Document Object Model or DOM is really not a part of JavaScript but a separate entity existing outside it. Although you can use JavaScript to manipulate DOM objects, other scripting languages may equally well access them too. what is the best way to avoid conflict between javascript and other client-siede scripting language when we have to deal with XMLHTTPRequest object

    - by user41755
I am decent with bash scripting and I am catching on to regex, and a little sed usage. Is learning awk still worth while with all the alternatives out there. I am kind of averse to using perl, I see it as dying, for some reason I feel like bash is more of a survivor. Opinions?

  • Create keyboard shortcuts to move/resize windows in Ubuntu

    - by Herms
On windows I have a few AutoHotkey scripts that let me hit various key combinations to resize windows to particular pre-defined sizes, or move them to certain areas of the screen (or both). I'm wondering how I would accomplish this in Ubuntu (gnome). Most of the searches I did for a linux version of autohotkey seemed to be centered around just setting up simple keyboard shortcuts (key combo X launches app Y, etc). I didn't see anything about scripting window size and placement beyond maximize/minimize.

  • Is there a way to programatically set the printer properties in windows ?

    - by panzerschreck
Hello, As a paper saving drive throughout the organization, we plan to set 2 page printing as default setting on all the windows machines. I would like to contribute to this by writing a small script that can do that for all the machines, maybe send an email to all the users, and let them run the batch file. Is that possible, can you please guide me. I have no knowledge about windows scripting, I program in java for my living. Thanks for your time.

  • Are "backwards" terminators for if and case unique to shell scripting?

    - by tomjakubowski
In bash at least, if and case blocks are closed like this: if some-expr then echo "hello world" fi case $some-var in [1-5]) do-a-thing ;; *) do-another-thing esac as opposed to the more typical close of end or endif/endcase. As far as I know, this rather funny convention is unique to shell scripting and I have never seen such an odd block terminator anywhere else. Sometimes things like this have an origin in another language (like Ruby's elsif coming from Perl), or a strange justification. Does this feature of shell scripting have a story behind it? Is it found in other languages?
