• OpenVPN not connecting

- by LandArch
There have been a number of post similar to this, but none seem to satisfy my need. Plus I am a Ubuntu newbie. I followed this tutorial to completely set up OpenVPN on Ubuntu 12.04 server. Here is my server.conf file ################################################# # Sample OpenVPN 2.0 config file for # # multi-client server. # # # # This file is for the server side # # of a many-clients <-> one-server # # OpenVPN configuration. # # # # OpenVPN also supports # # single-machine <-> single-machine # # configurations (See the Examples page # # on the web site for more info). # # # # This config should work on Windows # # or Linux/BSD systems. • Coherence - How to develop a custom push replication publisher

- by cosmin.tudor(at)oracle.com
CoherencePushReplicationDB.zipIn the example bellow I'm describing a way of developing a custom push replication publisher that publishes data to a database via JDBC. This example can be easily changed to publish data to other receivers (JMS,...) by performing changes to step 2 and small changes to step 3, steps that are presented bellow. I've used Eclipse as the development tool. To develop a custom push replication publishers we will need to go through 6 steps: Step 1: Create a custom publisher scheme class Step 2: Create a custom publisher class that should define what the publisher is doing. Step 3: Create a class data is performing the actions (publish to JMS, DB, etc ) for the custom publisher. Step 4: Register the new publisher against a ContentHandler. Step 5: Add the new custom publisher in the cache configuration file. Step 6: Add the custom publisher scheme class to the POF configuration file. All these steps are detailed bellow. The coherence project is attached and conclusions are presented at the end. Step 1: In the Coherence Eclipse project create a class called CustomPublisherScheme that should implement com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.publishers.AbstractPublisherScheme. In this class define the elements of the custom-publisher-scheme element. For instance for a CustomPublisherScheme that looks like that: <sync:publisher> <sync:publisher-name>Active2-JDBC-Publisher</sync:publisher-name> <sync:publisher-scheme> <sync:custom-publisher-scheme> <sync:jdbc-string>jdbc:oracle:thin:@machine-name:1521:XE</sync:jdbc-string> <sync:username>hr</sync:username> <sync:password>hr</sync:password> </sync:custom-publisher-scheme> </sync:publisher-scheme> </sync:publisher> the code is: package com.oracle.coherence; import java.io.DataInput; import java.io.DataOutput; import java.io.IOException; import com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.Publisher; import com.oracle.coherence.configuration.Configurable; import com.oracle.coherence.configuration.Mandatory; import com.oracle.coherence.configuration.Property; import com.oracle.coherence.configuration.parameters.ParameterScope; import com.oracle.coherence.environment.Environment; import com.tangosol.io.pof.PofReader; import com.tangosol.io.pof.PofWriter; import com.tangosol.util.ExternalizableHelper; @Configurable public class CustomPublisherScheme extends com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.publishers.AbstractPublisherScheme { /** * */ private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L; private String jdbcString; private String username; private String password; public String getJdbcString() { return this.jdbcString; } @Property("jdbc-string") @Mandatory public void setJdbcString(String jdbcString) { this.jdbcString = jdbcString; } public String getUsername() { return username; } @Property("username") @Mandatory public void setUsername(String username) { this.username = username; } public String getPassword() { return password; } @Property("password") @Mandatory public void setPassword(String password) { this.password = password; } public Publisher realize(Environment environment, ClassLoader classLoader, ParameterScope parameterScope) { return new CustomPublisher(getJdbcString(), getUsername(), getPassword()); } public void readExternal(DataInput in) throws IOException { super.readExternal(in); this.jdbcString = ExternalizableHelper.readSafeUTF(in); this.username = ExternalizableHelper.readSafeUTF(in); this.password = ExternalizableHelper.readSafeUTF(in); } public void writeExternal(DataOutput out) throws IOException { super.writeExternal(out); ExternalizableHelper.writeSafeUTF(out, this.jdbcString); ExternalizableHelper.writeSafeUTF(out, this.username); ExternalizableHelper.writeSafeUTF(out, this.password); } public void readExternal(PofReader reader) throws IOException { super.readExternal(reader); this.jdbcString = reader.readString(100); this.username = reader.readString(101); this.password = reader.readString(102); } public void writeExternal(PofWriter writer) throws IOException { super.writeExternal(writer); writer.writeString(100, this.jdbcString); writer.writeString(101, this.username); writer.writeString(102, this.password); } } Step 2: Define what the CustomPublisher should basically do by creating a new java class called CustomPublisher that implements com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.Publisher package com.oracle.coherence; import com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.EntryOperation; import com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.Publisher; import com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.exceptions.PublisherNotReadyException; import java.io.BufferedWriter; import java.util.Iterator; public class CustomPublisher implements Publisher { private String jdbcString; private String username; private String password; private transient BufferedWriter bufferedWriter; public CustomPublisher() { } public CustomPublisher(String jdbcString, String username, String password) { this.jdbcString = jdbcString; this.username = username; this.password = password; this.bufferedWriter = null; } public String getJdbcString() { return this.jdbcString; } public String getUsername() { return username; } public String getPassword() { return password; } public void publishBatch(String cacheName, String publisherName, Iterator<EntryOperation> entryOperations) { DatabasePersistence databasePersistence = new DatabasePersistence( jdbcString, username, password); while (entryOperations.hasNext()) { EntryOperation entryOperation = (EntryOperation) entryOperations .next(); databasePersistence.databasePersist(entryOperation); } } public void start(String cacheName, String publisherName) throws PublisherNotReadyException { System.err .printf("Started: Custom JDBC Publisher for Cache %s with Publisher %s\n", new Object[] { cacheName, publisherName }); } public void stop(String cacheName, String publisherName) { System.err .printf("Stopped: Custom JDBC Publisher for Cache %s with Publisher %s\n", new Object[] { cacheName, publisherName }); } } In the publishBatch method from above we inform the publisher that he is supposed to persist data to a database: DatabasePersistence databasePersistence = new DatabasePersistence( jdbcString, username, password); while (entryOperations.hasNext()) { EntryOperation entryOperation = (EntryOperation) entryOperations .next(); databasePersistence.databasePersist(entryOperation); } Step 3: The class that deals with the persistence is a very basic one that uses JDBC to perform inserts/updates against a database. package com.oracle.coherence; import com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.EntryOperation; import java.sql.*; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import com.oracle.coherence.Order; public class DatabasePersistence { public static String INSERT_OPERATION = "INSERT"; public static String UPDATE_OPERATION = "UPDATE"; public Connection dbConnection; public DatabasePersistence(String jdbcString, String username, String password) { this.dbConnection = createConnection(jdbcString, username, password); } public Connection createConnection(String jdbcString, String username, String password) { Connection connection = null; System.err.println("Connecting to: " + jdbcString + " Username: " + username + " Password: " + password); try { // Load the JDBC driver String driverName = "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"; Class.forName(driverName); // Create a connection to the database connection = DriverManager.getConnection(jdbcString, username, password); System.err.println("Connected to:" + jdbcString + " Username: " + username + " Password: " + password); } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } // driver catch (SQLException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } return connection; } public void databasePersist(EntryOperation entryOperation) { if (entryOperation.getOperation().toString() .equalsIgnoreCase(INSERT_OPERATION)) { insert(((Order) entryOperation.getPublishableEntry().getValue())); } else if (entryOperation.getOperation().toString() .equalsIgnoreCase(UPDATE_OPERATION)) { update(((Order) entryOperation.getPublishableEntry().getValue())); } } public void update(Order order) { String update = "UPDATE Orders set QUANTITY= '" + order.getQuantity() + "', AMOUNT='" + order.getAmount() + "', ORD_DATE= '" + (new SimpleDateFormat("dd-MMM-yyyy")).format(order .getOrdDate()) + "' WHERE SYMBOL='" + order.getSymbol() + "'"; System.err.println("UPDATE = " + update); try { Statement stmt = getDbConnection().createStatement(); stmt.execute(update); stmt.close(); } catch (SQLException ex) { System.err.println("SQLException: " + ex.getMessage()); } } public void insert(Order order) { String insert = "insert into Orders values('" + order.getSymbol() + "'," + order.getQuantity() + "," + order.getAmount() + ",'" + (new SimpleDateFormat("dd-MMM-yyyy")).format(order .getOrdDate()) + "')"; System.err.println("INSERT = " + insert); try { Statement stmt = getDbConnection().createStatement(); stmt.execute(insert); stmt.close(); } catch (SQLException ex) { System.err.println("SQLException: " + ex.getMessage()); } } public Connection getDbConnection() { return dbConnection; } public void setDbConnection(Connection dbConnection) { this.dbConnection = dbConnection; } } Step 4: Now we need to register our publisher against a ContentHandler. In order to achieve that we need to create in our eclipse project a new class called CustomPushReplicationNamespaceContentHandler that should extend the com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.configuration.PushReplicationNamespaceContentHandler. In the constructor of the new class we define a new handler for our custom publisher. package com.oracle.coherence; import com.oracle.coherence.configuration.Configurator; import com.oracle.coherence.environment.extensible.ConfigurationContext; import com.oracle.coherence.environment.extensible.ConfigurationException; import com.oracle.coherence.environment.extensible.ElementContentHandler; import com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.PublisherScheme; import com.oracle.coherence.environment.extensible.QualifiedName; import com.oracle.coherence.patterns.pushreplication.configuration.PushReplicationNamespaceContentHandler; import com.tangosol.run.xml.XmlElement; public class CustomPushReplicationNamespaceContentHandler extends PushReplicationNamespaceContentHandler { public CustomPushReplicationNamespaceContentHandler() { super(); registerContentHandler("custom-publisher-scheme", new ElementContentHandler() { public Object onElement(ConfigurationContext context, QualifiedName qualifiedName, XmlElement xmlElement) throws ConfigurationException { PublisherScheme publisherScheme = new CustomPublisherScheme(); Configurator.configure(publisherScheme, context, qualifiedName, xmlElement); return publisherScheme; } }); } } Step 5: Now we should define our CustomPublisher in the cache configuration file according to the following documentation. <cache-config xmlns:sync="class:com.oracle.coherence.CustomPushReplicationNamespaceContentHandler" xmlns:cr="class:com.oracle.coherence.environment.extensible.namespaces.InstanceNamespaceContentHandler"> <caching-schemes> <sync:provider pof-enabled="false"> <sync:coherence-provider /> </sync:provider> <caching-scheme-mapping> <cache-mapping> <cache-name>publishing-cache</cache-name> <scheme-name>distributed-scheme-with-publishing-cachestore</scheme-name> <autostart>true</autostart> <sync:publisher> <sync:publisher-name>Active2 Publisher</sync:publisher-name> <sync:publisher-scheme> <sync:remote-cluster-publisher-scheme> <sync:remote-invocation-service-name>remote-site1</sync:remote-invocation-service-name> <sync:remote-publisher-scheme> <sync:local-cache-publisher-scheme> <sync:target-cache-name>publishing-cache</sync:target-cache-name> </sync:local-cache-publisher-scheme> </sync:remote-publisher-scheme> <sync:autostart>true</sync:autostart> </sync:remote-cluster-publisher-scheme> </sync:publisher-scheme> </sync:publisher> <sync:publisher> <sync:publisher-name>Active2-Output-Publisher</sync:publisher-name> <sync:publisher-scheme> <sync:stderr-publisher-scheme> <sync:autostart>true</sync:autostart> <sync:publish-original-value>true</sync:publish-original-value> </sync:stderr-publisher-scheme> </sync:publisher-scheme> </sync:publisher> <sync:publisher> <sync:publisher-name>Active2-JDBC-Publisher</sync:publisher-name> <sync:publisher-scheme> <sync:custom-publisher-scheme> <sync:jdbc-string>jdbc:oracle:thin:@machine_name:1521:XE</sync:jdbc-string> <sync:username>hr</sync:username> <sync:password>hr</sync:password> </sync:custom-publisher-scheme> </sync:publisher-scheme> </sync:publisher> </cache-mapping> </caching-scheme-mapping>  <remote-invocation-scheme> <service-name>remote-site1</service-name> <initiator-config> <tcp-initiator> <remote-addresses> <socket-address>
localhost
<port>20001</port> </socket-address> </remote-addresses> <connect-timeout>2s</connect-timeout> </tcp-initiator> <outgoing-message-handler> <request-timeout>5s</request-timeout> </outgoing-message-handler> </initiator-config> </remote-invocation-scheme>  <proxy-scheme> <service-name>ExtendTcpProxyService</service-name> <acceptor-config> <tcp-acceptor> <local-address>
localhost
<port>20002</port> </local-address> </tcp-acceptor> </acceptor-config> <autostart>true</autostart> </proxy-scheme> </caching-schemes> </cache-config> As you can see in the red-marked text from above I've: - set new Namespace Content Handler - define the new custom publisher that should work together with other publishers like: stderr and remote publishers in our case. Step 6: Add the com.oracle.coherence.CustomPublisherScheme to your custom-pof-config file: <pof-config> <user-type-list> <include>coherence-pof-config.xml</include> <include>coherence-common-pof-config.xml</include> <include>coherence-messagingpattern-pof-config.xml</include> <include>coherence-pushreplicationpattern-pof-config.xml</include> <user-type> <type-id>1901</type-id> <class-name>com.oracle.coherence.Order</class-name> <serializer> <class-name>com.oracle.coherence.OrderSerializer</class-name> </serializer> </user-type> <user-type> <type-id>1902</type-id> <class-name>com.oracle.coherence.CustomPublisherScheme</class-name> </user-type> </user-type-list> </pof-config> CONCLUSIONSThis approach allows for publishers to publish data to almost any other receiver (database, JMS, MQ, ...). The only thing that needs to be changed is the DatabasePersistence.java class that should be adapted to the chosen receiver. Only minor changes are needed for the rest of the code (to publishBatch method from CustomPublisher class).

• 2 (or 3 or 4...) websites in IIS, pointing to same ASP.NET application IIS

- by billfredtom
I wish to maintain a single a single code base (ASP.NET app) setup at c:\inetpub\wwwroot\myApp, and point several IIS websites at this single code base. Will this be an issue? Will IIS see this as a conflict in resource allocation? Reasons why I want to do it: Each IIS website can then have it's own IP, SSL cert, etc. Each IIS website can have it's own ISAPI filters installed for friendly URLs, etc. Easier to maintain the code base by having single point of deployment

• Inbound SIP calls through Cisco 881 NAT hang up after a few seconds

- by MasterRoot24
I've recently moved to a Cisco 881 router for my WAN link. I was previously using a Cisco Linksys WAG320N as my modem/router/WiFi AP/NAT firewall. The WAG320N is now running in bridged mode, so it's simply acting as a modem with one of it's LAN ports connected to FE4 WAN on my Cisco 881. The Cisco 881 get's a DHCP provided IP from my ISP. My LAN is part of default Vlan 1 (192.168.1.0/24). General internet connectivity is working great, I've managed to setup static NAT rules for my HTTP/HTTPS/SMTP/etc. services which are running on my LAN. I don't know whether it's worth mentioning that I've opted to use NVI NAT (ip nat enable as opposed to the traditional ip nat outside/ip nat inside) setup. My reason for this is that NVI allows NAT loopback from my LAN to the WAN IP and back in to the necessary server on the LAN. I run an Asterisk 1.8 PBX on my LAN, which connects to a SIP provider on the internet. Both inbound and outbound calls through the old setup (WAG320N providing routing/NAT) worked fine. However, since moving to the Cisco 881, inbound calls drop after around 10 seconds, whereas outbound calls work fine. The following message is logged on my Asterisk PBX: [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3641 retrans_pkt: Retransmission timeout reached on transmission [email protected] for seqno 1 (Critical Response) -- See https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions Packet timed out after 6528ms with no response [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3670 retrans_pkt: Hanging up call [email protected] - no reply to our critical packet (see https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions). (I know that this is quite a common issue - I've spend the best part of 2 days solid on this, trawling Google.) I've done as I am told and checked https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions. Referring to the section "Other SIP requests" in the page linked above, I believe that the hangup to be caused by the ACK from my SIP provider not being passed back through NAT to Asterisk on my PBX. I tried to ascertain this by dumping the packets on my WAN interface on the 881. I managed to obtain a PCAP dump of packets in/out of my WAN interface. Here's an example of an ACK being reveived by the router from my provider: 689 21.219999 193.x.x.x 188.x.x.x SIP 502 Request: ACK sip:[email protected] | However a SIP trace on the Asterisk server show's that there are no ACK's received in response to the 200 OK from my PBX: http://pastebin.com/wwHpLPPz In the past, I have been strongly advised to disable any sort of SIP ALGs on routers and/or firewalls and the many posts regarding this issue on the internet seem to support this. However, I believe on Cisco IOS, the config command to disable SIP ALG is no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 however, this doesn't appear to help the situation. To confirm that config setting is set: Router1#show running-config | include sip no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 Another interesting twist: for a short period of time, I tried another provider. Luckily, my trial account with them is still available, so I reverted my Asterisk config back to the revision before I integrated with my current provider. I then dialled in to the DDI associated with the trial trunk and the call didn't get hung up and I didn't get the error above! To me, this points at the provider, however I know, like all providers do, will say "There's no issues with our SIP proxies - it's your firewall." I'm tempted to agree with this, as this issue was not apparent with the old WAG320N router when it was doing the NAT'ing. I'm sure you'll want to see my running-config too: ! ! • Centos 6.3 install reiserFS support

- by Alon_A
I'm trying to change an existing ext4 partition to reiserFS in Centos 6.3 64bit. I've updated the kernel to Centos Plus: First, I've updated /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo: In the [centosplus] section: enabled=1 includepkgs=kernel* Then I ran yum ypdate and my Kernel was updated to Centos Plus: [root@vappsil disk]# uname -r 2.6.32-279.11.1.el6.centos.plus.x86_64 Then, I've added this to /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo into the [centosplus] section: includepkgs=kernel* jfsutils reiserfs-utils into the [base] and [updates] section: includepkgs=kernel* jfsutils reiserfs-utils But when trying to execute: yum install reiserfs-utils I get: No package reiserfs-utils available. How can I install the reiserFS-utils package to create a reiserFS partition?

• objectClass in openldap.

- by garden air
I am working on openldap in my linux box (centos) as testing.I create a base file to discuss with you about objectClass functionality & its impact if we not write.I write objectClass two times i.e top and domain .What does it mean ? The 2nd one is drived from the firect objectClass like parents child relation ? [root@srv1 openldap]# vim base.ldif base.ldif dn: dc=test,dc=local dc: test objectClass: top objectClass: domain Now I create add two OUs and does not add objectClass:top in both sales and marketing. To add two OUs i.e Sales and Marketing dn: ou=Sales,dc=test,dc=local ou: Sales objectClass:organizationalUnit dn: ou=Marketing,dc=test,dc=local ou: Marketing objectClass: organizationalUnit The confusion is should use all the parent objectClass and chield objectClass ? If we not add what impact will be on the structure ? In the following I use objectClass top and organizationalunit dn: ou=Sales,dc=test,dc=local ou: Sales objectClass: top objectClass:organizationalUnit dn: ou=Marketing,dc=test,dc=local ou: Marketing objectClass: top objectClass: organizationalUnit Please guide me which one is correct ? thanks garden

• How does Windows 7 DNS client work?

- by Mark Allison
I am using a local DHCP and DNS server on my home network on a linux machine. It is running CentOS 6.3 with dnsmasq 2.48. It's all working fine except for local DNS lookups for Windows machines only. I have a mix of Ubuntu, CentOS and Windows machines on the network, some virtual, some physical. I have a machine called boron and the domain is called localdomain If I ping boron from any linux machine, I get [root@lithium lists]# ping -c3 boron PING boron.localdomain (10.0.0.5) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from boron.localdomain (10.0.0.5): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.740 ms 64 bytes from boron.localdomain (10.0.0.5): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.478 ms 64 bytes from boron.localdomain (10.0.0.5): icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.458 ms --- boron.localdomain ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2000ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.458/0.558/0.740/0.131 ms If I do it from my Windows 7 machine, I get: Ping request could not find host boron. Please check the name and try again. If I try ping boron.localdomain I get: Pinging boron.localdomain [67.215.65.132] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=16ms TTL=57 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=188ms TTL=57 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=57 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=57 Ping statistics for 67.215.65.132: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 14ms, Maximum = 188ms, Average = 58ms which is clearly wrong. • converting node inheritance to hiera

- by quickshiftin
I'm working on moving over a node inheritance tree to hiera. Presently working on the hierarchy. Prior to hiera, my nodes had a hierarchy as such base pre-prod qa nodes staging nodes development nodes prod nodes Now I'm trying to get the same tier with hiera. Starting out I have this :hierarchy: - base - "%{environment}" - "%{clientcert}" but I need another level to capture pre-prod and prod. My thought would be to add an entry to puppet.conf, something like [agent] realm = pre-prod then :hierarchy: - base - "%{realm}" - "%{environment}" - "%{clientcert}" A couple of questions Are you allowed to place arbitrary properties into puppet.conf? Will hiera see the realm property?

I want to show the simulation that involves a base station, with few wireless stations. The base station should start sending data once it computes a certain value . On receiving the data, each wireless must begin communicating with the base station. I have gone through basic NS-2 tutorials from over here but I am not getting how to go about integrating it with my project. Can anyone tell me how to do it using NS2 or any other network simulator?

• How to install libcrypt-ssleay-perl in Ubuntu?

- by Deqing
When I tried to install libcrypt-ssleay-perl, it says: $ sudo apt-get install libcrypt-ssleay-perl Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libcrypt-ssleay-perl : Depends: perlapi-5.12.4 but it is not installable E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. This perlapi-5.12.4 is actually a virtual package provided by perl-base, which I had already installed: $ dpkg -l|grep perl-base ii perl-base 5.14.2-6ubuntu2.1 minimal Perl system So what should I do to install libcrypt-ssleay-perl now?

• overriding ctype<wchar_t>

- by Potatoswatter
I'm writing a lambda calculus interpreter for fun and practice. I got iostreams to properly tokenize identifiers by adding a ctype facet which defines punctuation as whitespace: struct token_ctype : ctype<char> { mask t[ table_size ]; token_ctype() : ctype<char>( t ) { for ( size_t tx = 0; tx < table_size; ++ tx ) { t[tx] = isalnum( tx )? alnum : space; } } }; (classic_table() would probably be cleaner but that doesn't work on OS X!) And then swap the facet in when I hit an identifier: locale token_loc( in.getloc(), new token_ctype ); … locale const &oldloc = in.imbue( token_loc ); in.unget() >> token; in.imbue( oldloc ); There seems to be surprisingly little lambda calculus code on the Web. Most of what I've found so far is full of unicode ? characters. So I thought to try adding Unicode support. But ctype<wchar_t> works completely differently from ctype<char>. There is no master table; there are four methods do_is x2, do_scan_is, and do_scan_not. So I did this: struct token_ctype : ctype< wchar_t > { typedef ctype<wchar_t> base; bool do_is( mask m, char_type c ) const { return base::do_is(m,c) || (m&space) && ( base::do_is(punct,c) || c == L'?' ); } const char_type* do_is (const char_type* lo, const char_type* hi, mask* vec) const { base::do_is(lo,hi,vec); for ( mask *vp = vec; lo != hi; ++ vp, ++ lo ) { if ( *vp & punct || *lo == L'?' ) *vp |= space; } return hi; } const char_type *do_scan_is (mask m, const char_type* lo, const char_type* hi) const { if ( m & space ) m |= punct; hi = do_scan_is(m,lo,hi); if ( m & space ) hi = find( lo, hi, L'?' ); return hi; } const char_type *do_scan_not (mask m, const char_type* lo, const char_type* hi) const { if ( m & space ) { m |= punct; while ( * ( lo = base::do_scan_not(m,lo,hi) ) == L'?' && lo != hi ) ++ lo; return lo; } return base::do_scan_not(m,lo,hi); } }; (Apologies for the flat formatting; the preview converted the tabs differently.) The code is WAY less elegant. I does better express the notion that only punctuation is additional whitespace, but that would've been fine in the original had I had classic_table. Is there a simpler way to do this? Do I really need all those overloads? (Testing showed do_scan_not is extraneous here, but I'm thinking more broadly.) Am I abusing facets in the first place? Is the above even correct? Would it be better style to implement less logic?

• YUI Calendar: how does it load the Sam's Skin CSS?

- by dound
I'm using YUI 2's calendar in YUI 3. How does it load Sam's skin CSS? I didn't manually include it (though it seems like I should so the user can download it in the one request I make to the combo loader for css). Strangely, I don't see it being downloaded nor do I see it in the JS files themselves. I must be overlooking it. This is how I'm loading the CSS and JS now:
...
...
... // YUI().use('yui2-calendar', function(Y) { var YAHOO = Y.YUI2; var cal = new YAHOO.widget.Calendar("cal",{navigator:true,mindate:'1/1/2000'); cal.render(); // ... Edit: I want to make a few minor changes to the default sam skin. What is the best way to do that? I answered this part of my question. If I wrap the calendar in an extra div, then specifying CSS rules which include that div as part of the selector makes the rule more specific so the browser uses it over Sam's skin. Rough example: ...

• Help Repainting a Line

- by serhio
I am doing a custom control (inherited from VisualBasic.PowerPacks.LineShape), that should be painted like as standard one, but also having a Icon displayed near it. So, I just overrided OnPaint like this: protected override void OnPaint(System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs e) { e.Graphics.DrawIcon(myIcon, StartPoint.X, StartPoint.Y); base.OnPaint(e); } Now, everything is OK, but when my control moves, the icon still remains drawn on the ancient place. Is there a way to paint it properly? The sample code for tests using Microsoft.VisualBasic.PowerPacks; using System.Windows.Forms; using System.Drawing; namespace LineShapeTest { /// /// Test Form /// public class Form1 : Form { IconLineShape myLine = new IconLineShape(); ShapeContainer shapeContainer1 = new ShapeContainer(); Panel panel1 = new Panel(); public Form1() { this.panel1.Dock = DockStyle.Fill; // load your back image here this.panel1.BackgroundImage = global::WindowsApplication22.Properties.Resources._13820t; this.panel1.Controls.Add(shapeContainer1); this.myLine.StartPoint = new Point(20, 30); this.myLine.EndPoint = new Point(80, 120); this.myLine.Parent = this.shapeContainer1; MouseEventHandler panelMouseMove = new MouseEventHandler(this.panel1_MouseMove); this.panel1.MouseMove += panelMouseMove; this.shapeContainer1.MouseMove += panelMouseMove; this.Controls.Add(panel1); } private void panel1_MouseMove(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { if (e.Button == MouseButtons.Left) { myLine.StartPoint = e.Location; } } } /// /// Test LineShape /// public class IconLineShape : LineShape { Icon myIcon = SystemIcons.Exclamation; protected override void OnPaint(System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs e) { e.Graphics.DrawIcon(myIcon, StartPoint.X, StartPoint.Y); base.OnPaint(e); } } } Nota Bene, for the lineShape: Parent = ShapeContainer Parent.Parent = Panel Update 1 TRACES In this variant of OnPaint, we have traces: protected override void OnPaint(System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs e) { Graphics g = Parent.Parent.CreateGraphics(); g.DrawIcon(myIcon, StartPoint.X, StartPoint.Y); base.OnPaint(e); } Update 2 BLINKS In this variant of OnPaint, we have a blinking image: protected override void OnPaint(System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs e) { Parent.Parent.Invalidate(this.Region, true); Graphics g = Parent.Parent.CreateGraphics(); g.DrawIcon(myIcon, StartPoint.X, StartPoint.Y); base.OnPaint(e); } Update 3: External Invalidation This variant works well, but... from exterior of IconLineShape class: private void panel1_MouseMove(object sender, MouseEventArgs e) { if (e.Button == MouseButtons.Left) { Region r = myLine.Region; myLine.StartPoint = e.Location; panel1.Invalidate(r); } } /// /// Test LineShape /// public class IconLineShape : LineShape { Icon myIcon = SystemIcons.Exclamation; Graphics parentGraphics; protected override void OnPaint(System.Windows.Forms.PaintEventArgs e) { parentGraphics.DrawIcon(myIcon, StartPoint.X, StartPoint.Y); base.OnPaint(e); } protected override void OnParentChanged(System.EventArgs e) { // Parent is a ShapeContainer // Parent.Parent is a Panel parentGraphics = Parent.Parent.CreateGraphics(); base.OnParentChanged(e); } } Even this resolves the problem of the test example, I need this control to be done inside the control, because I can't force the external "clients" of this control do not forget to save the old region and invalidate the parent each time changing a location...

• Loading a Template From a User Control

- by Ricardo Peres
What if you wanted to load a template (ITemplate property) from an external user control (.ascx) file? Yes, it is possible; there are a number of ways to do this, the one I'll talk about here is through a type converter. You need to apply a TypeConverterAttribute to your ITemplate property where you specify a custom type converter that does the job. This type converter relies on InstanceDescriptor. Here is the code for it: public class TemplateTypeConverter: TypeConverter { public override Boolean CanConvertFrom(ITypeDescriptorContext context, Type sourceType) { return ((sourceType == typeof(String)) || (base.CanConvertFrom(context, sourceType) == true)); } public override Boolean CanConvertTo(ITypeDescriptorContext context, Type destinationType) { return ((destinationType == typeof(InstanceDescriptor)) || (base.CanConvertTo(context, destinationType) == true)); } public override Object ConvertTo(ITypeDescriptorContext context, CultureInfo culture, Object value, Type destinationType) { if (destinationType == typeof(InstanceDescriptor)) { Object objectFactory = value.GetType().GetField("_objectFactory", BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance).GetValue(value); Object builtType = objectFactory.GetType().BaseType.GetField("_builtType", BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance).GetValue(objectFactory); MethodInfo loadTemplate = typeof(TemplateTypeConverter).GetMethod("LoadTemplate"); return (new InstanceDescriptor(loadTemplate, new Object [] { "~/" + (builtType as Type).Name.Replace('_', '/').Replace("/ascx", ".ascx") })); } return base.ConvertTo(context, culture, value, destinationType); } public static ITemplate LoadTemplate(String virtualPath) { using (Page page = new Page()) { return (page.LoadTemplate(virtualPath)); } } } And, on your control: public class MyControl: Control { [Browsable(false)] [TypeConverter(typeof(TemplateTypeConverter))] public ITemplate Template { get; set; } } This allows the following declaration: Hope this helps! SyntaxHighlighter.config.clipboardSwf = 'http://alexgorbatchev.com/pub/sh/2.0.320/scripts/clipboard.swf'; SyntaxHighlighter.brushes.CSharp.aliases = ['c#', 'c-sharp', 'csharp']; SyntaxHighlighter.brushes.Xml.aliases = ['xml']; SyntaxHighlighter.all();

• Juju stuck in "pending" state when using LXC

So I'm trying to get started with Juju, and tried to do this locally using LXC. I followed the instructions here: How do I configure juju for local usage? • C#: Why Decorate When You Can Intercept

- by James Michael Hare
We've all heard of the old Decorator Design Pattern (here) or used it at one time or another either directly or indirectly. A decorator is a class that wraps a given abstract class or interface and presents the same (or a superset) public interface but "decorated" with additional functionality. As a really simplistic example, consider the System.IO.BufferedStream, it itself is a descendent of System.IO.Stream and wraps the given stream with buffering logic while still presenting System.IO.Stream's public interface: 1: Stream buffStream = new BufferedStream(rawStream); Now, let's take a look at a custom-code example. Let's say that we have a class in our data access layer that retrieves a list of products from a database: 1: // a class that handles our CRUD operations for products 2: public class ProductDao 3: { 4: ... 5: 6: // a method that would retrieve all available products 7: public IEnumerable<Product> GetAvailableProducts() 8: { 9: var results = new List<Product>(); 10: 11: // must create the connection 12: using (var con = _factory.CreateConnection()) 13: { 14: con.ConnectionString = _productsConnectionString; 15: con.Open(); 16: 17: // create the command 18: using (var cmd = _factory.CreateCommand()) 19: { 20: cmd.Connection = con; 21: cmd.CommandText = _getAllProductsStoredProc; 22: cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; 23: 24: // get a reader and pass back all results 25: using (var reader = cmd.ExecuteReader()) 26: { 27: while(reader.Read()) 28: { 29: results.Add(new Product 30: { 31: Name = reader["product_name"].ToString(), 32: ... 33: }); 34: } 35: } 36: } 37: } 38: 39: return results; 40: } 41: } Yes, you could use EF or any myriad other choices for this sort of thing, but the germaine point is that you have some operation that takes a non-trivial amount of time. What if, during the production day I notice that my application is performing slowly and I want to see how much of that slowness is in the query versus my code. Well, I could easily wrap the logic block in a System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch and log the results to log4net or other logging flavor of choice: 1: // a class that handles our CRUD operations for products 2: public class ProductDao 3: { 4: private static readonly ILog _log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(ProductDao)); 5: ... 6: 7: // a method that would retrieve all available products 8: public IEnumerable<Product> GetAvailableProducts() 9: { 10: var results = new List<Product>(); 11: var timer = Stopwatch.StartNew(); 12: 13: // must create the connection 14: using (var con = _factory.CreateConnection()) 15: { 16: con.ConnectionString = _productsConnectionString; 17: 18: // and all that other DB code... 19: ... 20: } 21: 22: timer.Stop(); 23: 24: if (timer.ElapsedMilliseconds > 5000) 25: { 26: _log.WarnFormat("Long query in GetAvailableProducts() took {0} ms", 27: timer.ElapsedMillseconds); 28: } 29: 30: return results; 31: } 32: } In my eye, this is very ugly. It violates Single Responsibility Principle (SRP), which says that a class should only ever have one responsibility, where responsibility is often defined as a reason to change. This class (and in particular this method) has two reasons to change: If the method of retrieving products changes. If the method of logging changes. Well, we could “simplify” this using the Decorator Design Pattern (here). If we followed the pattern to the letter, we'd need to create a base decorator that implements the DAOs public interface and forwards to the wrapped instance. So let's assume we break out the ProductDAO interface into IProductDAO using your refactoring tool of choice (Resharper is great for this). Now, ProductDao will implement IProductDao and get rid of all logging logic: 1: public class ProductDao : IProductDao 2: { 3: // this reverts back to original version except for the interface added 4: } 5: And we create the base Decorator that also implements the interface and forwards all calls: 1: public class ProductDaoDecorator : IProductDao 2: { 3: private readonly IProductDao _wrappedDao; 4: 5: // constructor takes the dao to wrap 6: public ProductDaoDecorator(IProductDao wrappedDao) 7: { 8: _wrappedDao = wrappedDao; 9: } 10: 11: ... 12: 13: // and then all methods just forward their calls 14: public IEnumerable<Product> GetAvailableProducts() 15: { 16: return _wrappedDao.GetAvailableProducts(); 17: } 18: } This defines our base decorator, then we can create decorators that add items of interest, and for any methods we don't decorate, we'll get the default behavior which just forwards the call to the wrapper in the base decorator: 1: public class TimedThresholdProductDaoDecorator : ProductDaoDecorator 2: { 3: private static readonly ILog _log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(TimedThresholdProductDaoDecorator)); 4: 5: public TimedThresholdProductDaoDecorator(IProductDao wrappedDao) : 6: base(wrappedDao) 7: { 8: } 9: 10: ... 11: 12: public IEnumerable<Product> GetAvailableProducts() 13: { 14: var timer = Stopwatch.StartNew(); 15: 16: var results = _wrapped.GetAvailableProducts(); 17: 18: timer.Stop(); 19: 20: if (timer.ElapsedMilliseconds > 5000) 21: { 22: _log.WarnFormat("Long query in GetAvailableProducts() took {0} ms", 23: timer.ElapsedMillseconds); 24: } 25: 26: return results; 27: } 28: } Well, it's a bit better. Now the logging is in its own class, and the database logic is in its own class. But we've essentially multiplied the number of classes. We now have 3 classes and one interface! Now if you want to do that same logging decorating on all your DAOs, imagine the code bloat! Sure, you can simplify and avoid creating the base decorator, or chuck it all and just inherit directly. But regardless all of these have the problem of tying the logging logic into the code itself. Enter the Interceptors. Things like this to me are a perfect example of when it's good to write an Interceptor using your class library of choice. Sure, you could design your own perfectly generic decorator with delegates and all that, but personally I'm a big fan of Castle's Dynamic Proxy (here) which is actually used by many projects including Moq. What DynamicProxy allows you to do is intercept calls into any object by wrapping it with a proxy on the fly that intercepts the method and allows you to add functionality. Essentially, the code would now look like this using DynamicProxy: 1: // Note: I like hiding DynamicProxy behind the scenes so users 2: // don't have to explicitly add reference to Castle's libraries. 3: public static class TimeThresholdInterceptor 4: { 5: // Our logging handle 6: private static readonly ILog _log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(TimeThresholdInterceptor)); 7: 8: // Handle to Castle's proxy generator 9: private static readonly ProxyGenerator _generator = new ProxyGenerator(); 10: 11: // generic form for those who prefer it 12: public static object Create<TInterface>(object target, TimeSpan threshold) 13: { 14: return Create(typeof(TInterface), target, threshold); 15: } 16: 17: // Form that uses type instead 18: public static object Create(Type interfaceType, object target, TimeSpan threshold) 19: { 20: return _generator.CreateInterfaceProxyWithTarget(interfaceType, target, 21: new TimedThreshold(threshold, level)); 22: } 23: 24: // The interceptor that is created to intercept the interface calls. 25: // Hidden as a private inner class so not exposing Castle libraries. 26: private class TimedThreshold : IInterceptor 27: { 28: // The threshold as a positive timespan that triggers a log message. 29: private readonly TimeSpan _threshold; 30: 31: // interceptor constructor 32: public TimedThreshold(TimeSpan threshold) 33: { 34: _threshold = threshold; 35: } 36: 37: // Intercept functor for each method invokation 38: public void Intercept(IInvocation invocation) 39: { 40: // time the method invocation 41: var timer = Stopwatch.StartNew(); 42: 43: // the Castle magic that tells the method to go ahead 44: invocation.Proceed(); 45: 46: timer.Stop(); 47: 48: // check if threshold is exceeded 49: if (timer.Elapsed > _threshold) 50: { 51: _log.WarnFormat("Long execution in {0} took {1} ms", 52: invocation.Method.Name, 53: timer.ElapsedMillseconds); 54: } 55: } 56: } 57: } Yes, it's a bit longer, but notice that: This class ONLY deals with logging long method calls, no DAO interface leftovers. This class can be used to time ANY class that has an interface or virtual methods. Personally, I like to wrap and hide the usage of DynamicProxy and IInterceptor so that anyone who uses this class doesn't need to know to add a Castle library reference. As far as they are concerned, they're using my interceptor. If I change to a new library if a better one comes along, they're insulated. Now, all we have to do to use this is to tell it to wrap our ProductDao and it does the rest: 1: // wraps a new ProductDao with a timing interceptor with a threshold of 5 seconds 2: IProductDao dao = TimeThresholdInterceptor.Create<IProductDao>(new ProductDao(), 5000); Automatic decoration of all methods! You can even refine the proxy so that it only intercepts certain methods. This is ideal for so many things. These are just some of the interceptors we've dreamed up and use: Log parameters and returns of methods to XML for auditing. Block invocations to methods and return default value (stubbing). Throw exception if certain methods are called (good for blocking access to deprecated methods). Log entrance and exit of a method and the duration. Log a message if a method takes more than a given time threshold to execute. Whether you use DynamicProxy or some other technology, I hope you see the benefits this adds. Does it completely eliminate all need for the Decorator pattern? No, there may still be cases where you want to decorate a particular class with functionality that doesn't apply to the world at large. But for all those cases where you are using Decorator to add functionality that's truly generic. I strongly suggest you give this a try!

• Finding the maximum value/date across columns

- by AtulThakor
While working on some code recently I discovered a neat little trick to find the maximum value across several columns….. So the starting point was finding the maximum date across several related tables and storing the maximum value against an aggregated record. Here's the sample setup code: USE TEMPDB IF OBJECT_ID('CUSTOMER') IS NOT NULL BEGIN DROP TABLE CUSTOMER END IF OBJECT_ID('ADDRESS') IS NOT NULL BEGIN DROP TABLE ADDRESS END IF OBJECT_ID('ORDERS') IS NOT NULL BEGIN DROP TABLE ORDERS END SELECT 1 AS CUSTOMERID, 'FREDDY KRUEGER' AS NAME, GETDATE() - 10 AS DATEUPDATED INTO CUSTOMER SELECT 100000 AS ADDRESSID, 1 AS CUSTOMERID, '1428 ELM STREET' AS ADDRESS, GETDATE() -5 AS DATEUPDATED INTO ADDRESS SELECT 123456 AS ORDERID, 1 AS CUSTOMERID, GETDATE() + 1 AS DATEUPDATED INTO ORDERS .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } Now the code used a function to determine the maximum date, this performed poorly. After considering pivoting the data I opted for a case statement, this seemed reasonable until I discovered other areas which needed to determine the maximum date between 5 or more tables which didn't scale well. The final solution involved using the value clause within a sub query as followed. SELECT C.CUSTOMERID, A.ADDRESSID, (SELECT MAX(DT) FROM (Values(C.DATEUPDATED),(A.DATEUPDATED),(O.DATEUPDATED)) AS VALUE(DT)) FROM CUSTOMER C INNER JOIN ADDRESS A ON C.CUSTOMERID = A.CUSTOMERID INNER JOIN ORDERS O ON O.CUSTOMERID = C.CUSTOMERID .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } As you can see the solution scales well and can take advantage of many of the aggregate functions!

• Less is more: The making of a 37 signals style pizza

- by Liam McLennan
For years now we have been hearing from 37 signals that the way to bake a great web app is to build less – well the same is true of pizza. Our western hedonism has led us to pursue ever cheesier and more stuffed crusts at the expense of the simple flavours. All we are left with is a fatty, salty heart attack in waiting. The Italians know that the secret to great taste is simplicity. With that in mind I decided to base my pizza masterpiece on these simple flavours: tomato sopressa (spicy aged salami) mozzarella garlic basil Of course the first thing one needs when making pizza is a base. A freshly made base is extremely important but unfortunately I was too lazy. Next up is the tomato sauce. My wife made the sauce by reducing some tomatoes and adding herbs and sugar. We had selected some fine ingredients to make our topping: sopressa salami, fresh basil and the best mozzarella we could find. It is, according to google, important to bake pizza at a high temperature, so I set the oven to 250C (480F). Here are the before and after shots: Meanwhile, the dog did nothing.

• Azure – Part 5 – Repository Pattern for Table Service

- by Shaun
In my last post I created a very simple WCF service with the user registration functionality. I created an entity for the user data and a DataContext class which provides some methods for operating the entities such as add, delete, etc. And in the service method I utilized it to add a new entity into the table service. But I didn’t have any validation before registering which is not acceptable in a real project. So in this post I would firstly add some validation before perform the data creation code and show how to use the LINQ for the table service. LINQ to Table Service Since the table service utilizes ADO.NET Data Service to expose the data and the managed library of ADO.NET Data Service supports LINQ we can use it to deal with the data of the table service. Let me explain with my current example: I would like to ensure that when register a new user the email address should be unique. So I need to check the account entities in the table service before add. If you remembered, in my last post I mentioned that there’s a method in the TableServiceContext class – CreateQuery, which will create a IQueryable instance from a given type of entity. So here I would create a method under my AccountDataContext class to return the IQueryable<Account> which named Load. 1: public class AccountDataContext : TableServiceContext 2: { 3: private CloudStorageAccount _storageAccount; 4: 5: public AccountDataContext(CloudStorageAccount storageAccount) 6: : base(storageAccount.TableEndpoint.AbsoluteUri, storageAccount.Credentials) 7: { 8: _storageAccount = storageAccount; 9: 10: var tableStorage = new CloudTableClient(_storageAccount.TableEndpoint.AbsoluteUri, 11: _storageAccount.Credentials); 12: tableStorage.CreateTableIfNotExist("Account"); 13: } 14: 15: public void Add(Account accountToAdd) 16: { 17: AddObject("Account", accountToAdd); 18: SaveChanges(); 19: } 20: 21: public IQueryable<Account> Load() 22: { 23: return CreateQuery<Account>("Account"); 24: } 25: } The method returns the IQueryable<Account> so that I can perform the LINQ operation on it. And back to my service class, I will use it to implement my validation. 1: public bool Register(string email, string password) 2: { 3: var storageAccount = CloudStorageAccount.FromConfigurationSetting("DataConnectionString"); 4: var accountToAdd = new Account(email, password) { DateCreated = DateTime.Now }; 5: var accountContext = new AccountDataContext(storageAccount); 6: 7: // validation 8: var accountNumber = accountContext.Load() 9: .Where(a => a.Email == accountToAdd.Email) 10: .Count(); 11: if (accountNumber > 0) 12: { 13: throw new ApplicationException(string.Format("Your account {0} had been used.", accountToAdd.Email)); 14: } 15: 16: // create entity 17: try 18: { 19: accountContext.Add(accountToAdd); 20: return true; 21: } 22: catch (Exception ex) 23: { 24: Trace.TraceInformation(ex.ToString()); 25: } 26: return false; 27: } I used the Load method to retrieve the IQueryable<Account> and use Where method to find the accounts those email address are the same as the one is being registered. If it has I through an exception back to the client side. Let’s run it and test from my simple client application. Oops! Looks like we encountered an unexpected exception. It said the “Count” is not support by the ADO.NET Data Service LINQ managed library. That is because the table storage managed library (aka. TableServiceContext) is based on the ADO.NET Data Service and it supports very limit LINQ operation. Although I didn’t find a full list or documentation about which LINQ methods it supports I could even refer a page on msdn here. It gives us a roughly summary of which query operation the ADO.NET Data Service managed library supports and which doesn't. As you see the Count method is not in the supported list. Not only the query operation, there inner lambda expression in the Where method are limited when using the ADO.NET Data Service managed library as well. For example if you added (a => !a.DateDeleted.HasValue) in the Where method to exclude those deleted account it will raised an exception said "Invalid Input". Based on my experience you should always use the simple comparison (such as ==, >, <=, etc.) on the simple members (such as string, integer, etc.) and do not use any shortcut methods (such as string.Compare, string.IsNullOrEmpty etc.). 1: // validation 2: var accountNumber = accountContext.Load() 3: .Where(a => a.Email == accountToAdd.Email) 4: .ToList() 5: .Count; 6: if (accountNumber > 0) 7: { 8: throw new ApplicationException(string.Format("Your account {0} had been used.", accountToAdd.Email)); 9: } We changed the a bit and try again. Since I had created an account with my mail address so this time it gave me an exception said that the email had been used, which is correct. Repository Pattern for Table Service The AccountDataContext takes the responsibility to save and load the account entity but only for that specific entity. Is that possible to have a dynamic or generic DataContext class which can operate any kinds of entity in my system? Of course yes. Although there's no typical database in table service we can threat the entities as the records, similar with the data entities if we used OR Mapping. As we can use some patterns for ORM architecture here we should be able to adopt the one of them - Repository Pattern in this example. We know that the base class - TableServiceContext provide 4 methods for operating the table entities which are CreateQuery, AddObject, UpdateObject and DeleteObject. And we can create a relationship between the enmity class, the table container name and entity set name. So it's really simple to have a generic base class for any kinds of entities. Let's rename the AccountDataContext to DynamicDataContext and make the type of Account as a type parameter if it. 1: public class DynamicDataContext<T> : TableServiceContext where T : TableServiceEntity 2: { 3: private CloudStorageAccount _storageAccount; 4: private string _entitySetName; 5: 6: public DynamicDataContext(CloudStorageAccount storageAccount) 7: : base(storageAccount.TableEndpoint.AbsoluteUri, storageAccount.Credentials) 8: { 9: _storageAccount = storageAccount; 10: _entitySetName = typeof(T).Name; 11: 12: var tableStorage = new CloudTableClient(_storageAccount.TableEndpoint.AbsoluteUri, 13: _storageAccount.Credentials); 14: tableStorage.CreateTableIfNotExist(_entitySetName); 15: } 16: 17: public void Add(T entityToAdd) 18: { 19: AddObject(_entitySetName, entityToAdd); 20: SaveChanges(); 21: } 22: 23: public void Update(T entityToUpdate) 24: { 25: UpdateObject(entityToUpdate); 26: SaveChanges(); 27: } 28: 29: public void Delete(T entityToDelete) 30: { 31: DeleteObject(entityToDelete); 32: SaveChanges(); 33: } 34: 35: public IQueryable<T> Load() 36: { 37: return CreateQuery<T>(_entitySetName); 38: } 39: } I saved the name of the entity type when constructed for performance matter. The table name, entity set name would be the same as the name of the entity class. The Load method returned a generic IQueryable instance which supports the lazy load feature. Then in my service class I changed the AccountDataContext to DynamicDataContext and that's all. 1: var accountContext = new DynamicDataContext<Account>(storageAccount); Run it again and register another account. The DynamicDataContext now can be used for any entities. For example, I would like the account has a list of notes which contains 3 custom properties: Account Email, Title and Content. We create the note entity class. 1: public class Note : TableServiceEntity 2: { 3: public string AccountEmail { get; set; } 4: public string Title { get; set; } 5: public string Content { get; set; } 6: public DateTime DateCreated { get; set; } 7: public DateTime? DateDeleted { get; set; } 8: 9: public Note() 10: : base() 11: { 12: } 13: 14: public Note(string email) 15: : base(email, string.Format("{0}_{1}", email, Guid.NewGuid().ToString())) 16: { 17: AccountEmail = email; 18: } 19: } And no need to tweak the DynamicDataContext we can directly go to the service class to implement the logic. Notice here I utilized two DynamicDataContext instances with the different type parameters: Note and Account. 1: public class NoteService : INoteService 2: { 3: public void Create(string email, string title, string content) 4: { 5: var storageAccount = CloudStorageAccount.FromConfigurationSetting("DataConnectionString"); 6: var accountContext = new DynamicDataContext<Account>(storageAccount); 7: var noteContext = new DynamicDataContext<Note>(storageAccount); 8: 9: // validate - email must be existed 10: var accounts = accountContext.Load() 11: .Where(a => a.Email == email) 12: .ToList() 13: .Count; 14: if (accounts <= 0) 15: throw new ApplicationException(string.Format("The account {0} does not exsit in the system please register and try again.", email)); 16: 17: // save the note 18: var noteToAdd = new Note(email) { Title = title, Content = content, DateCreated = DateTime.Now }; 19: noteContext.Add(noteToAdd); 20: } 21: } And updated our client application to test the service. I didn't implement any list service to show all notes but we can have a look on the local SQL database if we ran it at local development fabric. Summary In this post I explained a bit about the limited LINQ support for the table service. And then I demonstrated about how to use the repository pattern in the table service data access layer and make the DataContext dynamically. The DynamicDataContext I created in this post is just a prototype. In fact we should create the relevant interface to make it testable and for better structure we'd better separate the DataContext classes for each individual kind of entity. So it should have IDataContextBase<T>, DataContextBase<T> and for each entity we would have class AccountDataContext<Account> : IDataContextBase<Account>, DataContextBase<Account> { … } class NoteDataContext<Note> : IDataContextBase<Note>, DataContextBase<Note> { … } Besides the structured data saving and loading, another common scenario would be saving and loading some binary data such as images, files. In my next post I will show how to use the Blob Service to store the bindery data - make the account be able to upload their logo in my example. Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. • Why is apt-get --auto-remove not removing all dependencies?

- by Mike
I just installed a package (dansguardian in this case) and apt told me that I had unmet dependencies. # sudo apt-get install dansguardian Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following extra packages will be installed: clamav clamav-base clamav-freshclam libclamav6 libtommath0 Suggested packages: clamav-docs squid libclamunrar6 The following NEW packages will be installed: clamav clamav-base clamav-freshclam dansguardian libclamav6 libtommath0 0 upgraded, 6 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0 B/4,956 kB of archives. After this operation, 14.4 MB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? So I installed it and the dependencies. So far so good. Later on, I decide that this package just isn't the package for me, so I want to remove it and all of the other junk it installed with it since I'm not going to be needing any of it: # sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove --purge dansguardian Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: dansguardian 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. After this operation, 1,816 kB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? However it is only removing that one specific package. What about clamav clamav-base clamav-freshclam libclamav6 libtommath0? Not only did it not remove them, but clamav was actually running a daemon that loads every time the computer boots. I thought that --auto-remove would remove not only the packages, but also the dependencies that were installed with it.
