  hi all, I'm writing an app which connects to a static ip adress in a local network. How can I check if I have a local network connection? I want to connect to http://192.168.2.5 and i tried using the Rechability class but it returns FALSE, while the device is definately connected ( when i don't do the check, the app works fine so there is a connection ): Reachability *r = [Reachability reachabilityWithHostName:@"http://192.168.2.5"]; NetworkStatus internetStatus = [r currentReachabilityStatus]; How should work this out? • Updating from svn repository returns "Could not read chunk size" error

  When updating from subversion repository using tortoise svn client I get error looking like that: Could not read chunk size: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. It doesn't prevent me from updating, just interrupts update process, so that I have to repeat update several times, before it is complete. What can cause such behaviour and how to fix it?

• iPhone SDK Internet connection detection

  I'm working on an iPhone application that makes a few calls to web services. I posted this application on the Apple store but it got rejected (and rightly so) since there was no error message displayed to the user if no Internet connection is available. Since obviously the application would not work without it. So I just wanted to know how to best achieve this? I'm guessing something needs to go in the viewDidLoad method that will throw an alert box saying something like "You need an Internet connection to use this application". Any ideas would be appreciated.

  Hi, I am using the EntityFramework POCO adapter and since there are limitations to what microsoft gives access to with regards to the meta data, i am manually extracting the information i need out of the xml. The only problem is i want to get the ssdl, msl, csdl file names to load without having to directly check for the connection string node in app.config. In short where in the ObjectContext/EntityConnection can i get access to these file names? Worst case scenario i need to get the connection name from the EntityConnection object then load this from app.config and parse the string itself and extract the filenames myself. (But i obviously don't want to do that). Thanks

• Django ORM and PostgreSQL connection limits

  I'm running a Django project on Postgresql 8.1.21 (using Django 1.1.1, Python2.5, psycopg2, Apache2 with mod_wsgi 3.2). We've recently encountered this lovely error: OperationalError: FATAL: connection limit exceeded for non-superusers I'm not the first person to run up against this. There's a lot of discussion about this error, specifically with psycopg, but much of it centers on older versions of Django and/or offer solutions involving edits to code in Django itself. I've yet to find a succinct explanation of how to solve the problem of the Django ORM (or psycopg, whichever is really responsible, in this case) leaving open Postgre connections. Will simply adding connection.close() at the end of every view solve this problem? Better yet, has anyone conclusively solved this problem and kicked this error's ass?

• Opening an existing process

  I am using Eclipse in Linux through a remote connection (xrdp). My internet got disconnected, so I got disconnected from the server while eclipse was running. Now I logged in again, and I do the "top" command I can see that eclipse is running and still under my user name. Is there some way I can bring that process back into my view (I do not want to kill it because I am in the middle of checking in a large swath of code)? It doesnt show up on the bottom panel after I logged in again.   i was reading the back archives of a canadian privacy law blog, and he linked to a judicial decision. apparently as part of an investigation in which were used yahoo chat and google's old 'hello' image trading program the officer was able to determine a suspect's modem's MAC address: In order to determine who STEPHTOSH was, the officer did a trace on a programme called WHO IS in an effort to learn from where STEPHTOSH was coming. WHO IS is a command program available to the public. The officer was able to ascertain that the person using the name STEPHTOSH was a Rogers Internet customer. The officer was able to obtain the Internet Protocol address, also known as the I.P. There is only one location for an I.P., which is unique to that subscriber. By use of the website known as DNS STUFF.com, one is able to find with which company this I.P. is registered. It was ascertained that the I.P. address used by STEPHTOSH was registered to Rogers Cable, from the Toronto area. The officer also learned the Cable Modem MAC address used by STEPHTOSH. This was all the information the officer was able to amass. now it was my understanding that the MAC address of any given device can only be accessed if you're only one 'hop' away on the Internet. the suspect in question was in Markham and the officer part of the Toronto Police, so it's conceivable that they both might have used Rogers internet. but would that still put them only one 'hop' away from each other? i thought the first hop after the modem was usually the ISP? and if he'd used a netBIOS query against this guy's machine it would return the ethernet card's MAC, not the modem's. so is this guy on the same rogers subnet as the suspect's cable modem, is that functionality part of google's Hello (i could only think that it would be possible if Hello operated as a virtual LAN or something), does the officer have remote access to the arp caches of the routers at Rogers or is he just full of crap and lying to make his case stronger?

• Upload An Excel File in Classic ASP On Windows 2003 x64 Using Office 2010 Drivers

  So, we are migrating an old web app from a 32-bit server to a newer 64-bit server. The app is basically a Classic ASP app. The pool is set to run in 64-bit and cannot be set to 32-bit due to other components. However, this breaks the old usage of Jet drivers and subsequent parsing of Excel files. After some research, I downloaded the 64-bit version of the new 2010 Office System Driver Beta and installed it. Presumably, this allows one to open and read Excel and CSV files. Here's the snippet of code that errors out. Think I followed the lean guidelines on the download page: Set con = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection") con.ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.14.0;Data Source=" & strPath & ";Extended Properties=""Excel 14.0;""" con.Open Any ideas why? • Can't connect remotely to Windows Server 2008 R2

  I have a new Dell R710 server running Windows Server 2008 R2. I one of it's 4 nic's set up and the rest are not being used. I have successfully given it an ip address, network mask, and dns servers. I can ping and resolve this machine from anywhere else in the network. However, when I try to connect to it via RDP it does several things: 1) it might just outright refuse me with the message, "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again." 2) it might connect me and let me chose the account I would like to log on as... but when you select an account then you receive the same message as in #1 3) it might actually allow you to connect but only for about 1 minute and then you receive the same message and it closes your session. I have configured the firewall service to allow for RDP over the domain network connection. This didn't have any noticible effect. I have now disabled the firewall for all 3 networks and have even stopped the Windows Firewall service. I am still having the same issue. I am new to Server 2008 R2 and things are very different. Please give me any advice you can on how to resolve this issue and/or any other gotchas that are sure to come my way. The 2003 - 2008 learning curve seems steep. Thanks

• Detect aborted connection during ASIO request

  Is there an established way to determine whether the other end of a TCP connection is closed in the asio framework without sending any data? Using Boost.asio for a server process, if the client times out or otherwise disconnects before the server has responded to a request, the server doesn't find this out until it has finished the request and generated a response to send, when the send immediately generates a connection-aborted error. For some long-running requests, this can lead to clients canceling and retrying over and over, piling up many instances of the same request running in parallel, making them take even longer and "snowballing" into an avalanche that makes the server unusable. Essentially hitting F5 over and over is a denial-of-service attack. Unfortunately I can't start sending a response until the request is complete, so "streaming" the result out is not an option, I need to be able to check at key points during the request processing and stop that processing if the client has given up.

• What could cause "Connection Interrupted" on LocalHost when debugging in ASP.NET

  I'm trying to run a freshly created ASP.NET Website using C#, however when I do so it launches FireFox and attempts to connect to http://localhost:1295/WebSite1/Default.aspx (for example), but after about 10-15 seconds it displays a "Connection Interrupted - The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." Error. This issue is also present with older ASP.NET C# pages/Web Services I've built in the past, nothing is actually running off the ASP.NET Development server. I am using: Windows XP Pro SP2, Visual Studio 2008 For reference I have SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition installed as well. I have tried: Browsing it with IE instead of Mozilla Trying 2.0 framework instead of 3.5 Reinstalling Visual Studio 2008 This problem seems so trivial the more I think about it, but I havn't been able to work it out just yet! • There are currently no logon servers available

  I am running a Windows 7 laptop that is joined to my company's domain. When I installed Windows 7, I created an account for myself, joined to the domain, and it had been working quite well even though I'm physically remote most of the time, and not actually on the network. However, today I created a new local user account (non-admin) for my little brother. While he was using it, he decided he wanted to install a program, because his account is not an admin, he was prompted to enter Administrator credentials to allow the program to make changes to his computer. I entered my credentials, and this is the first time I ran into the error message: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. I tried logging off and loggin back in, rebooting, etc etc, and no matter what, every time I try to authenticate as my "normal" domain account - I get that message. I can no longer access my computer as an administrator. I no longer know how to log in to my machine using any other account aside from my little brother's non-admin account. I don't have any other local accounts created, and the default local admin account was never enabled. I'd appreciate any ideas on how I can recover access to my account.   I'm creating a new Client / Server application in C# and expect to have a fairly high rate of connections. That made me think of database connection pools which help mitigate the expense of creating and disposing connections between the client and database. I would like to create a similar capability for my application and haven't been able to find any good examples of how to apply this pattern. Do I really need to spin up an instance of a TcpClient every time I want to send a message to the server and receive a receipt message? Each connection is expected to transport between 1-5KB with each receiving a 1KB response message. I realize this question is somewhat vague, but I am starting from scratch so I am open to suggestions. Even if that means my suppositions are all wrong.

• Connection to DB2 in Python

  Hi, I'm trying to create a database connection in a python script to my DB2 database. When the connection is done I've to run some different SQL statements. I googled the problem and has read the ibm_db API (http://code.google.com/p/ibm-db/wiki/APIs) but just can't seem to get it right. I really tried everything (or, not everything but pretty damn close) and I can't get it to work. I just need to make a automatic test python script that can test different queries with different indexes and so on and for that I need to create and remove indexes a long the way.   What's an efficient method (preferably simple as well) for communicating with a remote server and allowing the user to 'interact' with it (IE submit commands, user interface) via the web browser (IE a text box to input commands, and an text area for output, or various command-less abstracted interfaces)? I have the 'standalone' python code finished for communicating and working(terminal/console based right now). My primary concern is with re-factoring the code to suite the web, which involves establishing a connection (python sockets), and maintaining the connection while the user is logged on. some further details: currently using django framework for the basic back end/templates.

• Work from home on an iPad?

  The situation: My wife has a 13" MacBook Pro that she uses for email, Facebook, web surfing, and working from home. I'm about to buy us our first iPad. My wife's brother's computer just went belly-up, and she's contemplating giving him her MacBook and just using the iPad. The question is whether or not this is possible or realistic. Obviously, the iPad is well-suited for the email/web/Facebook tasks, but the working-from-home thing is an absolute must -- if the iPad can't handle that, it's a deal-breaker. For my wife, working from home means two things: Accessing her workplace computer's Windows Vista desktop, which she currently does via Remote Desktop. Editing Office documents locally, which she currently syncs via Dropbox. Being able to edit documents locally is important, because sometimes she will download documents and edit them when she doesn't have network access (e.g. on the subway). I'm more than happy to get a keyboard dock for her, so typing won't be an issue. Are there any iPad apps she can use to access her work computer and edit her work files? Thanks for any suggestions!

• Setting up xpra for client use in OS X

  I've been trying to get xpra to run on OS X for the last few days to connect to my Ubuntu server. Note that there's a GUI for it called shifter, but that (at least on OS X) is still far too buggy. For those who don't know what xpra is, if you know what screen is, it's like screen for GUI X Windows apps tunneled over ssh. You can render a remote X app locally so it's faster than sending a series of compresses screen shots (like VNC), but with xpra you can disconnect and reconnect on different computers. To get the basic functionality you can just type "ssh -X server.location" and any GUI app you open from the command line will open locally. I've been able to get xpra to build by doing the following: Download pari-all-0.0.6.tar.gz from the xpra site listed under upstream and untar it. Issue the following Mac Ports command (Dependencies thanks to RogBlog): sudo port install python25 python26 py26-pyrex py26-gtk xorg-libXtst py25-gobject py25-gtk py25-nose py26-nose xorg-libXdamage xorg-libXcomposite xorg-libXtst xorg-libXfixes In the upstream list of v0.0.06 patches (NOT 0.0.8pre!) on the xpra site listed above, download mswindows-conditional-pyrex.patch. Open the patch with your favorite text editor and change the single occurrence of "win" in it to "darwin". Apply the patch to setup.py. Run do-build in the command line. Now where I'm stumped: how do I run xpra? The build produces a sub directory called install/bin in which xpra is located, but when I try to run it I get the following error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "./xpra", line 4, in import xpra.scripts.main ImportError: No module named xpra.scripts.main There is a file called main.py under xpra/scripts, but I don't know any python and I'm not sure if this is what it's looking for, and what to do with it even if it is. My goal is to set up xpra so I can install it into /usr/bin (or some other common path for executables) and execute it whenever I please. What do I do next?

• Unable to get multiple connection to MySql on Windows 7

  I have installed MySql on windows 7 ... issue is i'm unable to get multiple connection to MySql . If I connect to MySql through command line and at the same time open an other MySql command line client it goes into wait state, as soon as I disconnect the first one later one gets connected. Because of above issues I'm unable to run tomcat in debug mode as it tries to get more than one connection to MySql in debug mode. Previously I was using same version of MySql i.e. 5.1 on vista and it was working fine.

  Hi, My application connects to MSSQL but sometimes it takes a while and the GUI is getting frozen. I would like to do the connection on the other thread, I guess BeginInvoke would be the best way (I know about background worker but I would like to learn this). I have studied MSDN page but I did not understand what is the best way to use? They also say that you can use only callback when the thread that called the async.method does not need to know the results...I dont understand it as I believe I can set some variable in the other thread to "pass" the result well. I would just need the GUI to be not frozen while the connection is being established. Thank you for your advice.

• App losing db connection

  I'm having a weird issue with an old Delphi app losing it's database connection. Actually, I think it's losing something else that then makes the connection either drop or be unusable. The app is written in Delphi 6 and uses the Direct Oracle Access component (v4.0.7.1) to connect to an Oracle 9i database. The app runs as a service and periodically queries the db using a TOracleQuery object (qryAlarmList). The method that is called to do this looks like this: procedure TdmMain.RefreshAlarmList; begin try qryAlarmList.Execute; except on E: Exception do begin FStatus := ssError; EventLog.LogError(-1, 'TdmMain.RefreshAlarmList', 'Message: ' + E.Message); end; end; end; It had been running fine for years, until a couple of Perl scripts were added to this machine. These scripts run every 15 minutes and look for datafiles to import into the db, and then they do a some calculations and a bunch of reads/writes to/from the db. For some reason, when they are processing large amounts of data, and then the Delphi app tries to query the db, the Delphi app throws an exception at the "qryAlarmList.Execute" line in the above code listing. The exception is always: Access violation at address 00000000. read of address 00000000 HOW can something that the Perl scripts are doing cause this?? There are other Perl scripts on this machine that load data using the same modules and method calls and we didn't have problems. To make it even weirder, there are two other apps that will also suddenly lose their ability to talk to the database at the same time as the Perl stuff is running. Neither of those apps run on this machine, but both are Delphi 6 apps that use the same DOA component to connect to the same database. We have other apps that connect to the same db, written in Java or C# and they don't seem to have any problems. I've tried adding code before the '.Execute' method is called to: check the session's connection (session.CheckConnection(true); always comes back as 'ccOK'). see whether I can access a field of the qryAlarmList object to see if maybe it's become null; can access it fine. check the state of the qryAlarmList; always says it's qsIdle. Does anyone have any suggestions of something to try? This is driving me nuts! Dave
