• Why is my rsync so slow compared to pure cp or even scp?

  I'm transfering the files from Linux to Windows 7 via a mounted share (the share is mounted from Windows on Linux).. I'm copying lots of data (i.e. nearly a TB) from the old to the new machine within my LAN. I'm unfortunate enough already that I only have 100MBit. Naturally I blindly used rsync but already wondered after a day why it feels so slow. Enabling the progress meter showed my a transfer rate of about 2MBit/s . So I took a reasonable big file (800MB) and tracked the transfer timing: cp : 05:33 scp (*): 06:33 rsync : 21:51 *) scp via localhost to the same Linux machine directly onto the share; completely useless but provided a progress meter The tests were as simple as (cp|scp|rsync) <source> <destination> No special arguments except host/port for scp. I even tried the -W switch for rsync but cancelled after ten minutes. rsync is 3.0.3 running on Lenny. To be able to interrupt the copy process anytime and resume lead me to rsync, but now I think I seriously need to reconsider this requirement. How's such a big difference possible?

• Tuning up a MySQL server

  I inherited a mysql server, and so I've started with running the MySQLTuner.pl script. I am not a MySQL expert but I can see that there is definitely a mess here. I'm not looking to go after every single thing that needs fixing and tuning, but I do want to grab the major, low hanging fruit. Total Memory on the system is: 512MB. Yes, I know it's low, but it's what we have for the time being. Here's what the script had to say: General recommendations: Run OPTIMIZE TABLE to defragment tables for better performance MySQL started within last 24 hours - recommendations may be inaccurate Enable the slow query log to troubleshoot bad queries When making adjustments, make tmp_table_size/max_heap_table_size equal Reduce your SELECT DISTINCT queries without LIMIT clauses Increase table_cache gradually to avoid file descriptor limits Your applications are not closing MySQL connections properly Variables to adjust: query_cache_limit (> 1M, or use smaller result sets) tmp_table_size (> 16M) max_heap_table_size (> 16M) table_cache (> 64) innodb_buffer_pool_size (>= 326M) For the variables that it recommends that I adjust, I don't even see most of them in the mysql.cnf file. • How to find what files / directories are not copied yet?

  Hi all, I found the following 'nice' situation: An archive of few disks (actually three disks) which has a bunch of photos (more or less) organized. Well, this is good. A big disk shared on a network which has a bunch of photos which has another folder structure (even if is somewhat recognizable for a human being) than the archive described above, but some of the files on this big network share are the same with the files from the archive. Well, this is bad. What we need is to move the different (new) files from the network share in the archive (perhaps we'll use for this a new disk added to archive). The program that we need is different from a regular File Duplicate Finder program because usually the File Duplicate Finder finds the duplicates from all sources comparing each file with another. We want to find the differences between the two sources. It is fine for us to have a report generated in text file which after this we'll use to do our move. A Windows solution will be preferred. Any ideas? TIA

• Difference between all servers in one cluster and more than one cluster with servers?

  Not sure I understand what´s the difference or how it works when servers a running in one cluster or if there are more than one clusters with servers in it - regard High availability & Load Balancing. For me they are somehow the same, there is not really a big difference. Let´s make a simple example: 2 Servers in 1 Cluster 2 Clusters with each 1 Server - 1. If one Server failure, the other one is able to continue the work. The same for Load Balancing, these two Servers are able to balance the work together. - 2. The same thing! If one Server failure... The only thing that could be a problem with point 1. is if the Cluster fails (then both of the Server are dead). But is this even possible? I was reading stuff about clustering and high availability but I think I do not get this really. Probably I did not really understand how a cluster is working. Are these 2 points with 1 Cluster and 2 Clusters somehow the same or are there really some big differences? What should I know about it? Thank you

• Ubuntu server 10.04 disconnects after short periods of inactivity on my site

  I'm new to Ubuntu (installed it for the first time just a couple of days ago on my server). I've Ubuntu Server 10.04 and am just using the terminal, no GUI like Gnome. So far it's working pretty great except for one big thing. Whenever I go to sleep and there's no activity on my server (it's not a big site so active users drop to 0 during the night), the server kind of disconnects. The only thing that can bring the site back online is to restart the whole server. I've tried disabling powersaving by using setterm but that changes nothing. Even if I wake up the server by pressing any key or so the site wont go back online! I've tried just restarting both Apache and MySQL (I'm using LAMP-server btw) but not even that works. But as soon as I turn the power off and on at the server, everythings work like normal for a couple of minutes of inactivity (~5-15 minutes I'd guess) and then it's down again unless someone logs in to the site and is active. I was previously using XAMPP on my laptop with Windows XP and that worked 24/7 so I don't think it's anything with my router or ISP. This is driving me crazy! My site is down all the time I'm in school as I have no possibility to restart the server if it becomes offline. Does anyone have a clue to what could be wrong?

• Jabber client for windows 7

  I am looking for a jabber client with some specific functions. I have spent 1½ day looking for one and it is getting tiresome. Clients that I have been using, that have what I need, but I am not interesting for a reason in are: Pidgin, does not show complete messages in their popups. Miranda IM, I have a constant disconnect issue that does not seem to be resolved in my case. What I need are: Popups A popup that shows broadcasts to users. A popup that show when my username is typed in a conference chat. I need to be able to view the full message in the popup. No configuration of a theme to make this enabled, or if there is a working theme for it already. Preferable placement is on the top right of the screen. Able to 'popup' when running full screen applications, much like games. Conferences Easy access to bookmarked conferences. I do not want to go through submenus to rejoin a disconnected or closed conference. If I close the conference window I want to be connected to the conference until I exit the client. Tabbed interface. Configuration Sober configurations, options are great but there is a limit and the above needs to be availble in the options in a understandable manner. What I wish for: MSN Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Facebook Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Conferences/chats Not needed! Eyecandy is always nice.

• Windows 7, network transmit (send) not working

  My Win 7 works 2 years without problem. But now, I can't transmit (send) big data on LAN/Internet. I can: - Ping anything - Browse Internet, download files at full speed - Send e-mails with very small attachments. - Testing download speed on Speedtest.net, measure stable full speed. I can't: - Testing upload speed on Speedtest.net. Upload stuck.. - Save/send email messages with big (128k) attachment, independent from e-mail provider or e-mail box. THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE/CABLE/CARD OR OTHER NETWORK DEVICES PROBLEM! When I boot from a Linux Live CD, without ANY hardware change, all data sending, testing works correctly, at full speed. I have tried already in Win 7: - Disable Windows/3rd party Firewall completely - Reset IP stack parameters (netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt) - Computer restore - Reinstall LAN driver When I inspect the packets in Wireshark in Windows, I see lot's of (maybe 60% of sent packets) "TCP Retransmission". Sometimes receive "TCP Dup Ack" or "TCP Out-of-Order". Linux don't do this. Thank you for the help.

• Deploying Memcached as 32bit or 64bit?

  I'm curious about how people deploy memcached on 64 bit machines. Do you compile a 64bit (standard) memcached binary and run that, or do people compile it in 32bit mode and run N instances (where N = machine_RAM / 4GB)? Consider a recommended deployment of Redis (from the Redis FAQ): Redis uses a lot more memory when compiled for 64 bit target, especially if the dataset is composed of many small keys and values. Such a database will, for instance, consume 50 MB of RAM when compiled for the 32 bit target, and 80 MB for 64 bit! That's a big difference. You can run 32 bit Redis binaries in a 64 bit Linux and Mac OS X system without problems. For OS X just use make 32bit. For Linux instead, make sure you have libc6-dev-i386 installed, then use make 32bit if you are using the latest Git version. Instead for Redis <= 1.2.2 you have to edit the Makefile and replace "-arch i386" with "-m32". If your application is already able to perform application-level sharding, it is very advisable to run N instances of Redis 32bit against a big 64 bit Redis box (with more than 4GB of RAM) instead than a single 64 bit instance, as this is much more memory efficient. Would not the same recommendation also apply to a memcached cluster?

• iTunes 9.2 OS X - iTunes DJ not functioning correctly

  I have been using iTunes on my Mac for 4 years now without any problems at all. Recently, however, the iTunes DJ function has started misbehaving. Instead of showing the 5 previously played songs, and 15 upcoming songs randomly selected from the playlist I have defined in the settings, it instead shows the 5 previously played songs, plus many more than 15 upcoming songs. In addition, the upcoming songs are not from the playlist, they are from about 7 or so albums, in album order. I have changed settings, change the source playlist, restarted iTunes, rebooted the machine. All with no change. Does anybody have any idea how to get this working again? Thanks, Dave

• BackupExec 12 to Bacula questions

  We have a 128 node compute cluster for environmental modeling, with a master/head node which we currently backup with a Windows2003 system running BackupExec 12 and a single HP LTO3 tape drive. We have recently ordered an Overland NEO200s 12 slot library, and are considering migrating off Windows to CentOS 5 for the backup server. The master/head node is RHEL5, with the compute nodes currently being migrated from a mix of RHEL3/4/5 to CentOS5. I'm fairly familiar with RH/Centos, but have no experience with Bacula. We've tentatively settled on Bacula as our cluster vendor recommended it. My questions are: 1) Does Bacula support an Overland NEO200s/LTO3 library? 2) Can Bacula catalog/restore tapes written by BE? and 3) I've head of Amanda, but am even more unfamiliar with it than Bacula. Any assistance would be appreciated Dave Frandin

• Used HDD/ran DiskSmartView/40,000 Power-on-hours?? should i trust it w/ my data, or take it back and bitch?

  I just bought a used hard drive from a University Surplus Store. Decided to run DiskSmartView to make sure it wasn't ready to fail. 40,000 power-on-hours I don't know if I feel like trusting my data to something that used. I really dont know if thats unreasonably old, but when i compare it to the POH reading i get when testing my other hdds its more than 3x older (my others have 2110 hours, 6150 hours, etc.. It's a Western Digital, so that gives me a little bit of hope(WDC WD4000KD-00NAB0). I could sure use someone else's opinion here. Thanks, DAVE

This both are the free google dns servers. But, still facing the same problem. • QoS, Squid, Virgin superhub

  I'm a student and have just moved into a house of 6. We've setup 100mb broadband with Virgin and get quite good speeds on it so we're really pleased. However, as there are 6 of us, who all like to stream/game/download etc I was looking at setting up QoS to ensure speeds were fair/equal etc. I looked into it and found out that the Virgin Superhub can't do it out of the box, so my next option is to setup squid proxy on my machine (always on) to act as at transparent proxy and provide QoS etc. However, I'm not really sure how to do this and had a look on the Internet but couldn't see any guides as such! I was wondering if someone could give me some more and perhaps provider a summary of the steps involved - and let me know if this is possible with the SuperHub etc. Thanks, Dave

• Tips on Managing Podcast Subscriptions

  I listen to a silly number of technical podcasts. I listen to enough of them that it is literally impossible to keep up. I nearly gave up and started dropping feeds from my subscription list when I heard Craig Shoemaker talk about his Polymorphic Podcast fast feed. The idea is he provides the same content at a higher speed so you can listen to his complete show in 3/4th the time. I tried it out with his recent jQuery Secrets with Dave Ward interview and I was shocked with the feed quality. It was a super clear, understandable conversation which only took a fraction of the time commitment. I experimented a bit and played the normal recording at 2x speed on my iPhone and the quality was once again just fine. But now I'm saving half of the time. I'm curious as to how you might manage your podcast subscriptions. Can you offer any tips or advice on how to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to technical podcast listening?

• Can't connect to local SQL Server

  I'm banging my head against the wall here and can't get things figured out. Yesterday I uninstalled SQL Server 2008 Express and installed a full copy of SQL Server 2008 R2. Everything installed fine but I can't connect to the database to save my life. There is a similar question here that never got answered and I'm not sure if this may be specific to 2008 R2 and how I may have installed. Under my old configuration (SQL Express) I connected with "DM\SQLEXPRESS" just fine. So far I've tried: DM\MSSQLSERVER - .\MSSQLSERVER - \MSSQLSERVER - MSSQLSERVER - DM\Dave\MSSQLSERVER and I get the "cannot connect to server" error every time. I have the service installed as well as the SQL Server Browser that I have started. If anyone had any suggestions that would be great.

• Outlook errors w/Craigslist and others

  Vista Home Basic and Outlook 2007 are all updated and repaired. When attempying to mailto: in CL, etc. by clicking on the users address, I get error 'can't open outlook'. If outlook is open, nothing ever happens. If I right click for gmail the address goes in the wrong field. I didnt notice right away but this happened after an auto update. Help! Thanks in advance. • Is there any way to access the mp3 or other file type tags from within an ipod touch/iphone?

  I am just looking for an existing app that will let me read all the tags that are stored in a particular song on my ipod touch/iphone. I'm not much of a programmer, but would be willing to learn the iphone sdk (on windows) if I could build a program that would do this for me. I would love to be able to modify the tag while on the iphone, but just viewing them would be a great use to me. I'd like to read the Year tag, the comments tag, composer, etc. It's so annoying that I can't do this. Or can I already and I just don't know how. Yes, I know how to view the lyrics tag. • Multiple SSIDs better or worse

  I'm just setting up a network in a student house with 10 rooms, 3 floors. Configuration at the moment is as follows: Virgin Media 100mb Cable Virgin SuperHub on ground floor broadcasting on SSID1 Second AP(Edimax) wired on middle floor broadcasting on SSID2 These two networks server all 3 floors fairly well but I was wondering whether it would be better to setup an individual SSID for each floor (both the routers allow me to configure up to 3 ssids on each!). Would this help with speed issues, i.e if someone on the top floor is downloading/streaming etc, this wouldn't affect someone on the middle floor on a different SSID Or, will it have no effect? I used the manager thing to create the database and the tables, etc and now i want to connect to it via my visual studio which is on a different machine. so how do i do that? do i need to "turn on" the sql server, do i need to do port forwarding? do i have to modify the iis or change those settings? is there a good article someone can me point me to? just to further help you help me, i understand how to connect to a datasource in visual studio my problem is more with the sql server and understanding how to properly set it up once installed. • Problem running application on windows server 2008 instance using amazon ec2 service and WAMP

  I have a basic (small type) windows server 2008 instance running on amazon ec2. I've installed WAMP server on to it, and have also loaded my application. I did this using Remote desktop Connection from my windows machine. I'm able to run my application locally on the instance, however when I try to access it using the public DNS given to it by amazon, from my browser, I'm unable to do so. My instance has a security group that is configured to allow HTTP, HTTPS, RDP, SSH and SMTP requests on different ports. In fact I have the exact same security group as the one used in this blog, http://howto.opml.org/dave/ec2/ I did almost everything same as the blog, except for using a different Amazon Machine Image. This is my first time using amazon ec2, and i can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here

• How do i know if i set up the nlb (network load balancing) cluster correctly???

  So ill start from the very beginning. I'm working on a web conference were we are going to show about 12 videos for a total of about half a gig for all 12. Since all the participants are going to be watching (and also streaming/downloading) at once it was recommended we set up a server farm. So i have 4 servers that i am trying to network together. They are all running Microsoft Server 2008 and i have spent the last three days setting them up and now that its done i want to make sure its all ready to go. so i just want to be sure that everything is setup the way that i think it is. • DNS for route between WAN & LAN

  I have a few machines set up on my internal 192.168.1.* network and i have one public ip, my router is links all ports to on internal linux machine on my network 192.168.1.3. I want to know how to configure the DNS server on my linux box to forward to internal LAN ip's depending on the host name. EG. computer4.83.22.56.12 would find my box then forward to 192.168.1.4 on the local network. This is so i can run multiple web server under one ip. btw, i use Ubuntu. Thanks Dave
