• compareTo() method java is acting weird

  In rails 3.2 I created a post controller. Each post can have a different number of paperclip attachments. To achieve this I created a assets model where each asset has a paperclip attachment. One post has_many assets and assets belong_to post. • my Search method is coming up with all nulls

  Let me give a quick explanation. I took a 5 week course through a company on Java in July. They covered basic stuff, like console app, crud operations, mysql, and n-tier architecture. Since the course ended I didn't use it much because I went back to work, and other medical reasons surfaced....blah blah. I was told by the company to make a simple program to reflect what I learned. Turns out I retained very little. I decided to make a video game starage program. It would be used to stare your video games so you wouldn't have to search your bookcase(or how ever you store your games.) It is a basic console app using the crud operations with MYSQL. I can't get my search function to actually work. I have 2 layers a Presentation layer and a Logic layer. • Why a static main method in Java and C#, rather than a constructor?

  Why did (notably) Java and C# decide to have a static method as their entry point – rather than representing an application instance by an instance of an Application class, with the entry point being an appropriate constructor which, at least to me, seems more natural? I’m interested in a definitive answer from a primary or secondary source, not mere speculations. This has been asked before. Unfortunately, the existing answers are merely begging the question. In particular, the following answers don’t satisfy me, as I deem them incorrect: There would be ambiguity if the constructor were overloaded. – In fact, C# (as well as C and C++) allows different signatures for Main so the same potential ambiguity exists, and is dealt with. A static method means no objects can be instantiated before so order of initialisation is clear. – This is just factually wrong, some objects are instantiated before (e.g. in a static constructor). So they can be invoked by the runtime without having to instantiate a parent object. – This is no answer at all. Just to justify further why I think this is a valid and interesting question: Many frameworks do use classes to represent applications, and constructors as entry points. For instance, the VB.NET application framework uses a dedicated main dialog (and its constructor) as the entry point1. Neither Java nor C# technically need a main method. Well, C# needs one to compile, but Java not even that. And in neither case is it needed for execution. So this doesn’t appear to be a technical restriction. And, as I mentioned in the first paragraph, for a mere convention it seems oddly unfitting with the general design principle of Java and C#. To be clear, there isn’t a specific disadvantage to having a static main method, it’s just distinctly odd, which made me wonder if there was some technical rationale behind it. I’m interested in a definitive answer from a primary or secondary source, not mere speculations. 1 Although there is a callback (Startup) which may intercept this.

• Fastest way to group units that can see each other?

  In the 2D game I'm working with, the game engine is able to give me, for each unit, the list of other units that are in its view range. I would like to know if there is an established algorithm to sort the units in groups, where each group would be defined by all those units which are "connected" to each other (even through others). An example might help understand the question better (E=enemy, O=own unit). First the data that I would get from the game engine: E1 can see E2, E3, O5 E2 can see E1 E3 can see E1 E4 can see O5 E5 can see O2 E6 can see E7, O9, O1 E7 can see E6 O1 can see E6 O2 can see O5, E5 O5 can see E1, E4, O2 O9 can see E6 Then I should compute the groups as follow: G1 = E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, O2, O5 G2 = O1, O9, E6, E7 It can be safely assumed that there is a transitive property for the field of view: [if A sees B, then B sees A]. Just to clarify: I already wrote a naïve implementation that loops on each row of the game engine info, but from the look of it, it seems a problem general enough for it to have been studied in depth and have various established algorithms (maybe passing through some tree-like structure?). My problem is that I couldn't find a way to describe my problem that returned useful google hits. Thank you in advance for your help!

• What scenarios are implementations of Object Management Group (OMG) Data Distribution Service best suited for?

  I've always been a big fan of asynchronous messaging and pub/sub implementations, but coming from a Java background, I'm most familiar with using JMS based messaging systems, such as JBoss MQ, HornetQ, ActiveMQ, OpenMQ, etc. I've also loosely followed the discussion of AMQP. But I recently became aware of the Data Distribution Service Specification from the Object Management Group, and found there are a couple of open-source implementations: OpenSplice OpenDDS It sounds like this stuff is focused on the kind of high-volume scenarios one tends to associate with financial trading exchanges and what-not. My current interest is more along the lines of notifications related to activity stream processing (think Twitter / Facebook) and am wondering if the DDS servers are worth looking into further. Could anyone who has practical experience with this technology, and/or a deep understanding of it, comment on how useful it is, and what scenarios it is best suited for?   I'm a sys admin on Kubuntu 11.10 machine. Where do I configure the basic config for a new user (say belonging to group "users")? Edit 1: I want to configure langauages - currently my new users get English and Bulgarian Languages. I want them to get English and Russian - and also to set Alt-CapsLock - to be the input-language-switching-combination. Edit 2: How do I configure things in /usr/share/kde4 When I do kdesudo systemsettings and save configurations - only root settings got changed - not the /usr/share/kde4 ones. Edit 3: New user gets the /etc/skel files controlling bash behaviour-appearence. What about the KDE new user's default files - where are they stored? Edit 4: Oh, I found some hints: kde4-config --path config gives a list of folders (separated by the colon) where KDE looks for configs. My machine responded with: /home/boris/.kde/share/config/ /etc/kde4/ /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings/kde4-profile/default/share/config/ /usr/share/kde4/config/ /usr/share/desktop-base/profiles/kde-profile/share/config/ It looks like third line is where KDE takes the default options. So I found these zilions of settings - but no GUI way to configure it ((. Edit 5: Finally, I've created a dummy user, configured it, and wrote a script which gives it's settings to a given user(s). The trick - is to chown after one transfered the dot files from one user to another. I've tested it - it works fine.

• paintComponent method is not displaying anything on the panel

  I have been trying to debug this for hours. The program is supposed to be a grapher that graphs coordinates, but i cannot get anything to display not even a random line, but if i put a print statement there it works. It is a problem with the paintComponent Method.   I'm trying to simulate browser with POST method using PHP/cURL. When I looked at that live Http header it shows Content-Type: multipart/form-data. I checked on the internet where it was suggested that cURL will send multipart/form-data when a custom headers is specified to Content-Type: multipart/form-data. $headers = array( 'Content-Type' => 'multipart/form-data; boundary='.$boundary ); This didn't work for me either when I print_r(curl_getinfo()) it showed [content_type] => text/html; charset=UTF-8 Which means cURL sent a default headers I also read that sending/uploading a file with cURL will cause data to be send as multipart/form-data. • Referencing CDI producer method result in h:selectOneMenu

  I have a named session scoped bean CustomerRegistration which has a named producer method getNewCustomer which returns a Customer object. There is also CustomerListProducer class which produces all customers as list from the database. On the selectCustomer.xhtml page the user is then able to select one of the customers and submit the selection to the application which then simply prints out the last name of the selected customer. Now this only works when I reference the selected customer on the facelets page via #{customerRegistration.newCustomer}. When I simply use #{newCustomer} then the output for the last name is null whenever I submit the form. What's going on here? Is this the expected behavior as according to chapter 7.1 Restriction upon bean instantion of JSR-299 spec? It says: ... However, if the application directly instantiates a bean class, instead of letting the container perform instantiation, the resulting instance is not managed by the container and is not a contextual instance as defined by Section 6.5.2, “Contextual instance of a bean”. • Creating static NAT blocks outbound traffic Cisco ASA

  Hi Everyone, I have two web servers sitting behind a Cisco ASA 5505, which I don't have much experience with. I'm trying to create two static NATs. One static NAT that goes to xx.xx.xx.150 and another that goes to xx.xx.xx.151. I've created the static NAT for the .150 web server and it works FINE. Incoming and outgoing traffic work great. This is the staging web server. I now need to duplicate the setup for the production web server. So, I connect the webserver to the firewall, change the public IP address on one of the NICs reboot the server and I have outbound internet access. Then I run the command: static (inside,outside) xx.xx.xx.150 192.168.1.x which is successful. I then run the command: access-list acl-outside permit tcp any host xx.xx.xx.150 eq 80 Which is successful. I then try to browse the internet and I get nothing. I try to telnet in through port 80 and I get nothing (though I'm guessing because the response to the telnet request is being blocked). I've tried this with the production web server and then I tried it with another web server that is for internal testing and have the exact same problem. Both work fine until I run the static NAT rule and then no outbound internet access. I have a feeling that it's something simple that I'm missing, but my limited experience with this device is killing me. Below I've pasted the current configuration. I'm currently trying to get this to work on the .153 server which is the internal testing server.   I'm unable to retrieve data from an XML document, any help is greatly appreciated. I'm using PHP 5.2.10 and the WSDL url is an internal link within my company. • How can I map a Windows group login to the dbo schema in a database?

  I have a database for which I want to restrict access to 3 named individuals. I thought I could do the following: Create a local Windows group on the database server and add the named individuals to it. Create a Windows login in SQL Server mapped to the local Windows group. Map the login to the "dbo" schema in the database, so that the users can access all objects without having to qualify them with the schema name. When I try to do step 3, I get the following error: Msg 15353, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 An entity of type database cannot be owned by a role, a group, an approle, or by principals mapped to certificates or asymmetric keys. I have tried to do this via the IDE, the sp_changedbowner sproc, and the ALTER AUTHORIZATION command, and I get the same error each time. After searching MSDN and Google, I find that this restriction is by design. Great, that's useful. Can anyone tell me: Why this restriction exists? It seems very arbitrary. More importantly, can I accomplish my requirement some other way? Other info that might be pertinent: The server is fully up to date with service packs and hotfixes. All objects in the database are owned by the "dbo" schema, and it's not feasible to change that. The database is running in compatibility level 80, and it's not feasible to change that to 90 yet. I am free to make any other changes (within reason, depending on what they are).

It basically says : Starting with Windows Server 2003, the ability to replicate discrete changes to linked multivalued properties was introduced as a technology called Linked Value Replication (LVR). and This allows the number of group memberships to exceed the former recommended limit of 5,000 for Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 at a forest functional level of Windows 2000. Given the replication meta data below, can anybody tell me what is the maximum number of users a AD-LDS group can hold ? • Configure Web app for external access (IIS7), allowing only certain users via AD group. All users need internal access

  We have a Web app running in IIS7 (Server 2008 R2). I now need to allow external access with an SSL certificate, so certain users (e.g. the owner of the company) can use it remotely without VPN. They want to roll out the external access only to those specific users at first (thinking: a Windows credential prompt), BUT everyone will still need access internally (HTTP), without the prompt. I have the SSL cert installed on the server and public DNS configured. I've been trying to figure out how to work the authentication/authorization. I was thinking I need to disable Anonymous authn and set Windows authn, then I keep coming back to 'URL Authorization' in my research for the group setting; however, when I tried URL authz, (removed allow all, added allow rule for the special group), it broke the site internally (403.2 Forbidden, I believe it was). I thought maybe setting up a second site in IIS pointing to the same program would work, but the exact same thing happened (and again with a new app pool, just for kicks). So I guess my question is, how would you do this: allow external access, limited to users in a specific AD group, while still allowing internal access without a credentials prompt? How do I separate the external HTTPS and internal HTTP authorization requirements? Will I need to just copy the entire contents of the app in Windows Explorer to a new folder and create my external site from that? Is Windows authentication the correct option for this? I did come across this, which refers to creating a custom module.
