Solve the IE select overlap bug

When using IE, you cannot put an absolutely positioned div over a select input element. That's because the select element is considered an ActiveX object and is on top of every HTML element in the page. I already saw people hiding selects when opening a popup div, that leads to pretty bad user experience having controls disappearing. FogBugz actually had a pretty smart solution (before v6) of turning every select into text boxes when a popup was displayed. This solved the bug and tricked the user eye but the behavior was not perfect. Another solution is in FogBugz 6 where they no more use the select element and recoded it everywhere. Last solution I currently use is messing up the IE rendering engine and force it to render the absolutely positioned div as an ActiveX element too, ensuring it can live over a select element. This is achieved by placing an invisible iframe inside the div and styling it with: #MyDiv iframe { position: absolute; z-index: -1; filter: mask(); border: 0; margin: 0; padding: 0; top: 0; left: 0; width: 9999px; height: 9999px; overflow: hidden; } Anyone has a even better solution than this one ? EDIT: The purpose of this question is as much informative as it is a real question. I find the iframe trick to be a good solution but I am still looking for improvement like removing this ugly useless iframe tag that degrade accessibility.

Elements of website don't work in IE

On the site I'm working on for my high school basketball team, certain elements don't work in Internet Explorer. The site is hermantownbasketball.com. The boys basketball sidebar should have nested drop down menus, one when you mouse over the team, such as "High School" and then another when you mouse over the grade under the team, such as 9th grade. This works perfectly fine in chrome, however, I can't get it to work in any version of Internet Explorer. Below is the part of the html and the corresponding css I am using. Unfortunately, I don't know enough css to know which part of my code IE doesn't like or how to fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated! Matching blank entries in django queryset for optional field with corresponding ones in a required

I have a django queryset in my views whose values I pack before passing to my template. There is a problem when the queryset returns none since associated values are not unpacked. the quersyet is called comments. Somehow, i want to 'join all these results', in a single queryset. Is there possible?

How to share internet over VPN and inside a virtual machine (Windows)?

` My final goal is to have a virtual machine at work in which anything that happen inside (tcp, udp, ping, ...) will use the Internet connection of a computer at home. So, if inside this VM should I open an Internet browser to a site such as "show my IP", my home IP should be printed. I am also looking for a way to debug/develop a software inside this VM, but I would like to tunnel only the connections of this software, not the full graphical interface, this is why a Remote Desktop solution won't fit me. The connection between the both computer should be secured somehow, like in a SSH tunnel. This ultimately should allow me to have a portable VM in which I can connect to whatever networks I have access at home, in a secure way. This is my configuration: At work, I have a LAN-connected desktop computer, with Windows 7 Professional Edition as a host [computer W] On this same computer, I have a Virtual Box machine running Windows XP [computer V] At home, I have a laptop computer, running Windows 7 Home Edition [computer H] This laptop is connected to a Livebox 2 broadband modem by Wifi. What I am trying to do is to sit at work in front of the virtual machine [V], and connect to a webpage as if the request was issued from the laptop [H] at home, and the data should be securely tunneled between the both. But if I am using internet directly inside [W], it should use the normal LAN interface at work. To achieve my goal, I first try using VPN, than SSH tunneling, without success. I first tried to install Teamviewer between [W] and [H]. This is working fine, I can send files, share desktop, etc. Teamviewer has a VPN mode that creates a new VPN network interface with its own IP, both on computer [W] and [H]. This allowed me to connect [H] as a network computer inside [W] and I was able to share files, but not to share Internet. At this point, I tried to use from [W] the Internet as if I was at home. I setup a route (using route add from command line in [W]) in order to instruct each packet going to a given website to pass by the new VPN interface on [W], with the hope it will be forwarded to [H], but the webpage was simply inaccessible. I then tried to setup a Windows VPN connection between [W] and [H], using the Windows 7 VPN feature. [H] was the server and [W] the client. But it failed: I got the "Unable to join a remote PC while trying to VPN" 720 Error when I was setting up the client on [W]. I think the problem is the Livebox 2 that could blocks the packets. But I am not sure of this: 1) with Teamviewer it works fine, 2) Livebox 2 has a configuration page for port mapping that gives the proper configuration to map VPN ports as an example so I guess that it should allow it, 3) I opened the ports 1723 (TCP) and 500 (UDP) according to some forums. Virtual box has a network configuration parameter in which I can use the VPN network interface created by Teamviewer as a bridged connection. This is suppose to work in the sense that all packets issued by the virtual machine [V] is supposed to go directly to [H]. But I had no internet connection inside [V]. Using the NAT mode, [V] has internet. For me this is the feature that I look for: filtering all connections from the virtual box application to the VPN network interface, and the remaining should use the normal LAN interface. Apart from the build-in feature of VBox, I even do not know if it is possible to route the packet from a given application to a given interface. Finally I tried also SSH tunneling, but this is not the solution I looked for. Using an external SSH server (Linux), I was able to create a localhost connection on [W] (or [V]), using something like 'ssh -N -D server[H]' in order to allow a web browser located in [W] to connect to any website using the SOCKS 5 proxy created locally (SOCKS is a build-in feature of SSH). But repeating the same operation on windows, using a windows SSH server inside [W] (I tried freeSSHd), it failed: SFTP worked, but not the SOCKS tunneling, it was like the browser in [H] did not find internet. Finally only Teamviewer looked able to create a VPN between [W] and [H], but I am not able to use it, as I want, I mean using the Internet connection of [H] sitting in front of [W]. I also tried to bridge the VPN interface and the wifi interface inside [H], but it blocked my laptop, and I tried also the Internet Connection Sharing, trying to share on [H] the wifi connection over the VPN interface. This fails also, but it seems because Teamviewer actually use the wifi interface to be able to provide the VPN link, so I guess I am creating a recursive loop. I do not know what to try next... Should I replace libapache2-mod-php5-filter with libapache2-mod-php5 on Debian 6 Apache 2.2.16?

Upgrading various virtual machines we are having an issue with the Debian package upgrade to version 2.2.16 The upgrade (surprisingly) seems to remove libapache2-mod-php5 replacing it with libapache2-mod-php5-filter. This gave us some headache as the php.ini was pointing to the "old" one and some of the apache.conf conditional module rules stopped working. We can fix all those but we can't figure out if there would be any issues if we just "reversed" this and simply install libapache2-mod-php5 again and load that module instead of the "filter" one or in there is anyway to "alias" a module. I tend to think that the change "has a reason" but after reading apache2 and php5: module or filter I understand the module differences are to do with post delivery security issues.

How to enable Postfix filter on OS X server (Lion) without getting overwritten?

I have a Postfix after-queue content filter that works fine on stock Ubuntu Postfix install. However, on a OS X Lion Server I'm testing out, I see this "auto-generated" language in the master.cf file: # ==== Begin auto-generated section ======================================== # This section of the master.cf file is auto-generated by the Server Admin # Mail backend plugin whenever mails settings are modified. smtp inet n - n - 1 postscreen smtpd pass - - n - - smtpd -o receive_override_options=no_address_mappings The problem is, to enable the filter the same area of the master.cf file has to be changed to have an entry like this: smtp inet n - - - - smtpd -o content_filter=mytest_filter:dummy So, it looks like the line would be blown away every I make a change in Server Admin. Is there a better place for me to put the call to the filter such that it's persistent? I appreciate any assistance and/or guidance!

Any way to remove IEs black border around submit button in active forms?

I am implementing a design that uses custom styled submit-buttons. They are quite simply light grey buttons with a slightly darker outer border: input.button { background: #eee; border: 1px solid #ccc; } This looks just right in Firefox, Safari and Opera. The problem is with Internet Explorer, both 6 and 7. Since the form is the first one on the page, it's counted as the main form - and thus active from the get go. The first submit button in the active form receives a solid black border in IE, to mark it as the main action. If I turn off borders, then the black extra border in IE goes away too. I am looking for a way to keep my normal borders, but remove the outline.

How to use Watin 64-bit with MSIE 32-bit

Hi, I have a C#-application running on Windows 7. I am using Watin to test some flash and quicktime movies in Internet Explorer. I am running in x64 mode due to some memory limitations I encountered in x86-mode. So I run my application which uses Watin, which starts MSIE. Watin starts the 64-bit version of MSIE. So far so good. The problem is, flash and quicktime do not seem to work in MSIE 64-bit, so testing playing of movies will not work. What must be done to run my C# application in 64-bit mode but to get Watin to run MSIE in 32-bit mode?

ie7 innerhtml strange display problem

Hello, I am having a strange problem with ie7 (ie8 in compatibility mode). I have div containers where I am updating values using javascript innhtml to update the values. This works fine in Firefox and ie8. In ie7 the values do not update but if a click on the values and highlight them then they update, also if a change the height of the browser then on the next update the values get updated correctly. I have figured out that if I change the position property of the outer div container from relative to static then the updates work correctly. The page can be viewed here http://islendingasogur.net/test/webmap_html_test.html In internet explorer 8 with compatibility turned on you can see that the timestamp in the gray box only gets updated one time, after that you see no changes. The timestamp in the lower right corner gets updated every 10 seconds. But if you highlight the text in the gray box then the updated timestamp values appears! IE8 error with Certificate

I have installed a certificate with multiple Common Names on a Red Hat server in the jks format. The web page can be accessed with Firefox and the certificate gets imported. However, IE8 gives the error "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I added the cert with MMC and its properties shows "This certificate has an nonvalid digital signature.". Also the cert doesn't have the URL of the web page in it. The cert does have a valid signature in Firefox and the URL mismatch is ignored. How can I get IE8 to accept it. This cert is required for another Application (where it works fine) and cannot be changed except to change the format. I already have it in PKCS12, jks and pem formats.

Prevent IE users from visiting my site?

Internet Explorer has caused me a lot of trouble over the years, between security problems, memory leaks, endless CSS and JavaScript hacks to get my site to look correct, and inconsistencies between releases, I've spent countless hours as the hapless victim of IE's idiosyncrasies. Well that ends today, I've decided to take matters into my own hands and ban all users of IE from visiting my website. That will teach them to use such a cruddy browser. My question is how best to do this? I don't want to rely on JavaScript, which could be disabled, nor the request agent string, which could be tampered with. A clever user could even temporarily switch to Firefox or Chrome just to visit my site. Ideally, I'd have a list of the IP addresses of every IE user in the world and restrict based on the IP address. The main problem I'm having, aside from getting the list in the first place, is how do I keep it updated? Thanks!

How to Detect IE Version on Vista and Above

I would like to detect what version IE is running on Vista and above (I am developing on 7). I currently use WMI on XP, but it appears that this is no more. I have searched for an answer and so far I have found the following solutions: Using System.Windows.Forms WebBrowser wb = new WebBrowser; wb.Version; SELECT path,filename,extension,version FROM CIM_DataFile WHERE path="\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\" AND filename="iexplore" AND extension="exe" AND version>"8.0" And there is probably a way of looking up in the registry. Is there must a more elegant solution to this?

Displaying local images in the web browser control

Hi, I am writing a Windows Forms application and am creating a report for users to view in the webBrowser control. The problem is that it does not seem to display an image which is situated on my local hard drive, it just display the "broken image" red cross symbol. The path of the image is correct and when I view the source code of the generated html in either Firefox or Chrome it works but not in Internet Explorer (which I presume it what is used for this webBrowser control). Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Richard.

JavaScript: 'foo.value' not working in IE?

Hi! A few hours ago, I was instructed how to style a specific textarea with JS. The following piece of code (thanks again, Mario Menger) works like a charm in Firefox but unfortunately nothing happens in Internet Explorer (7 tested only so far). var foo = document.getElementById('HCB_textarea'); var defaultText = 'Your message here'; foo.value = defaultText; foo.style.color = '#888'; foo.onfocus = function(){ foo.style.color = '#000'; if ( foo.value == defaultText ) { foo.value = ''; } }; foo.onblur = function(){ foo.style.color = '#888'; if ( foo.value == '' ) { foo.value = defaultText; } }; I've already tried to replace 'value' by 'innerHTML' (for IE only) but to no effect. Google Docs viewer in IE

Hey all, I've searched high and low for a solution, but can't find one. I'm using Google Docs Viewer to view PDF files. It's a great tool, but I can't seem to get it working in Internet Explorer (7 or 8). All my images come up as a 'missing' icon. If I view the file externally, it seems to load fine and it will start working (I'm assuming because the images are being cached). The document is being displayed in an iframe and works in all other browsers. Has anyone come across a solution to get it to work in IE? If not, is there an alternative that can display PPT and PDF files? Thanks

Div that should take up the "rest of the page" expands beyond the page in ie.

Okay, this is REALLY starting to bug me... This page works fine in both Chrome and Firefox. www.bloggan.tk But if it's opened in internet-explorer it always expands beyond the page and introduces the scrollbar no matter what the resolution of the browser is. I have NO idea what change in the html it was that cause this... Here's the blogger-template-html-source I'd REALLY appreciate if someone could help me with this. Thanks in advance! Edit: I've "solved" it for IE using javascript, but that's only temporary (i hope). The version without javascript can be seen here, so that you still will be able to know what I'm talking about. Still trying to solve it, and still hoping for someone to help me.

pasteHTML removes markup

I am writing a plugin to an old IE-only WYSIWYG-editor which resides in an old CMS. I've created a plugin that opens an popup where the user kan enter the url of an youtube clip. The popup then creates the corrent <object..><param..> markup for the embed and uses Internet Explorers pasteHTML function; var range = plugin.editorDocument.selection.createRange(); var embedHtml = OpenDialog(dialogUrl, null, 400, 200); if (!embedHtml) { return; } range.pasteHTML(embedHtml); I know it's missing a bit of information about some of the variables but you get the picture. The problem is that the <param>-tags gets removed when i run the pasteHTML. I wonder if anyone have an idea of fixing this, and letting me keep my param-tags

Why is IE7 hiding my overflow when, as far as I can tell, all it's containing elements have overflow

If you visit the site in question (haddongrant.com) and go to the Artwork section, if you click on an image and view it's stack in Safari, Chrome or Firefox you'll notice the images extend up and down the page, eventually disappearing over the edge. This is what you should be seeing. In Internet Explorer 7, however, the overflow gets cut off at some point before it ever gets to the end of the page. The problem is... I can't tell where! I've had a look and every containing element should show overflow. I don't know why IE7 isn't. Does anyone have any ideas where I might need to add an overflow-y:visible;?
