• How do I draw an OpenGL point sprite using libgdx for Android?

Unfortunately though, this just renders a few white dots... I suppose that the texture isn't being bound which is why I'm getting white dots. Also, when I draw my sprites on anything other than 0 z-axis, they do not appear -- I read that I need to crease my zfar and znear, but I have no idea how to do this using libgdx (perhaps it's because I'm using ortho projection? What do I use instead?). I know that the texture is usable, since I was able to render it using a SpriteBatch, but I guess I'm not using it properly with OpenGL.

• Confusion for mime files: magic, magic.mgc, magic.mime

  I'm using Ubuntu. I'm trying to use ruby gem 'shared-mime-info' for an application I'm writing. I understand that magic.mgc is a compiled version of magic file which has magic number definitions for the different file types. BUT I don't understand why is it /usr/share/mime/magic is in binary format instead of just normal text file with each parameters separated by white space like everywhere else I'm finding on the internet when it's referencing this file? The /usr/share/mime/magic has the word 'MIME-Magic' at the beginning of the file and prioritize the rest of the stuff like. So it doesn't look like magic.mgc at all. [100:application/vnd.scribus] >1=^@^KSCRIBUSUTF8 [90:application/vnd.stardivision.writer] >2089=^@ shared-mime-info seems to want a magic file in the binary non compiled format as above and I wanted to add definition for DOCX but how does one update or generate this file without using a hex editor? There is a reference to the magic file I found at: http://standards.freedesktop.org/shared-mime-info-spec/shared-mime-info-spec-latest.html And it mention this file is updated with update-mime-database but what if I just want to add some new entry to it. hex editor? Anyway I ended up using hexer to make a new magic file in ~/.local/share/mime/ with only the entry I wanted to add and the MIME-Magic header. • Ubuntu 13.04 running really slow and Hanging

  Up till recently I have been running 13.04 on my laptop very happily. This morning however, I turned on my laptop to find it running really slow. Takes 5 min to load a program and even then the program freezes and I have had 3 system hangs this morning already. The Unity Desktop appears to run ok but programs do not. Things I have tried so far: Checking for Propitiatory graphics drivers - none shown available (I have bumblebee running already). Using the recovery boot options from Grub to repair broken packages. Recent changes - Updated computer, Installed some indicator applets which have worked fine for me before. System Specs: Asus U36s, Intel Core i5-2450M 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 610M-1GB, Dual boot Win7 & Ubuntu 13.04 I'm a bit of a noob with Ubuntu but am happy enough running stuff in terminal if you will advise me on what to run. I'm just a bit stuck on what do to fix this without a reinstall. Thanks a lot for your help.

But the eglCreateWindowSurface does no accept the parameter mApplication-window, as it should accept according to its definition. Instead, it looks for the following input: EGLNativeWindowType hWnd; mSurface = eglCreateWindowSurface(mDisplay,lConfig,hWnd,NULL); As an alternative, I considered to use instead: NativeWindowType hWnd=android_createDisplaySurface(); But debugger says: Function 'android_createDisplaySurface' could not be resolved Can someone tell if there is a way to convert mApplication-window? In a way that the data from the android_app get accepted to the window surface?

  New in AutoVue 20 is the capability to view a 3D model of a building from the inside - this is a very powerful tool for anyone who needs to work with models of plants, refineries, or other buildings. All of the standard AutoVue functionality is available, so you can click on any part of the building to get attribute data, manipulate the view, do measurement, etc. For example, in the image below we've made the Architectural model (Walls, Floors, etc.) transparent, but left the electrical and mechanical models opaque, so it's easy to see where the wires and piping run behind the walls. • Oracle Australia Supports MS Sydney to Gong Ride by Chris Sainsbury

  What is the Sydney to Gong Ride? The Gong Ride is a one of a kind fundraising event. You can pedal 90 km from Sydney to Wollongong on any day of the year but it's only on the first Sunday of November that you'll experience the camaraderie, fellowship, unity, safey, scenery and sense of achievement for pedalling in support of people living with MS. Well done to the 22 members of the Oracle Sydney to Gong ride on Sunday 6 November. For many, this was the first time riding over distance – officially a 90km event, by GPS about 84km. The event started in Sydney Park, Newtown. We left in a few separate groups between 6.30 and 7.30am – and finished with times between 2 hours 45 mins and 6 hours. With 10,000 riders there was a lot of congestion at the start but that soon thinned out as we left Sydney. It was a great spring day for the event but at 34 degrees it was getting pretty warm once we left the shade of the Royal National Park and carried on over the Sea Cliff bridge and down the coast road towards Wollongong. Unfortunately Dan managed to get himself a facial scrub when someone clipped his front wheel on the descent from Bald Hill lookout. No major incidents thankfully and Dan soldiered on. Most importantly everyone had a good time (even Dan) and we raised $5,800 for Multiple Sclerosis Australia. In total more than $3.7m was raised for this good cause.

  I'm not sure if this fits on SO, but other SE sites don't seem to fit either, so I understand when this question gets moved, Although I'd like to avoid getting it closed due to being offtopics, since I think that this question might fit, considering this part of the FAQ: Stack Overflow is for professional and enthusiast programmers, ... covers … a specific programming problem ... matters that are unique to the programming profession Sorry for the lengthy Introduction, though. When Software is advertised, it is usually Software for one (or more) specific purpose, such as: Mozilla Firefox - A Web Browser Ubuntu - An Operating System Python - A Programming Language Visual Studio - A Development Studio ... And so on. But when writing Libraries, that is, Software that doesn't necessarily serve one specific purpose, but instead multiple purposes, which are usually supposed to be used inside an application, such as: Irrlicht - A 3D Engine Qt - An Application Framework I'm a developer of the latter kind of Software, and I naturally want to advertise my Software. It's not commercial Software; It's not GPL either. It's completely free (Licensed under the MIT License :-)). I naturally host my stuff at github, which technically makes it very easy to access the software, and I thought that these might be possible options, although I have no experience with them: Submit the Software to Freshmeat, and hope for the best Submit the Software to Sourceforge, and hope someone accidently stumbles over it Write spammails, and get death threats via Mail ... But something tells me that these methods are probably not the best Methods. So, my final question would be, How does the Average Joe Hobby Programmer advertise his/her Software Library? Yes, I know this question is probably getting closed due to being Offtopic on SO. But maybe a move might be better instead.

• Ubuntu 12.04.1 Radeon 9550 stuck with 640x480, works in Geexbox

  I am a complete new user trying to set up Ubuntu on an old desktop. It has an AGP Radeon 9550 graphics card. I am running Ubuntu from a USB drive with persistence as the PC currently has no hard drive I seem to be stuck in 640*480 mode. The desktop itself is larger, but the monitor display is stuck on 640*480. In SettingsDisplays, only the 640*480 option is available. What I have found out so far: The proprietary ati drivers no longer support my card. If 3D isn't an issue (it's not) the open source driver should be fine. This should be installed by default so in theory I am using it already xserver-xconf/pci/*.ids doesn't show any entries for the card's PCI id. hardware additional drivers show no proprietary drivers I tried the booting into the current version of Geexbox from a USB stick and this set the resolution correctly by default so I know it can be done, but I know no idea how. How can I tell what driver the card is using, and how can I get the higher resolutions back?

• Error when starting update-manager

  Yesterday evening I ran an update. Apparently the python3-update-manager got updated. However, since today I get an error message when I started the update manager within Unity. A report was sent as proposed. Running an update from within the terminal seems to work normally. Uninstalling and re-installing from the ubuntu software centre didn't solve the problem. I tried throughout synaptic where I removed all related packages (3) and re-installed them after a restart..but in vain so far. I'm quite new to linux and ran out of ideas. • Alice In Wonderland: Good, but not Great

  We went to see Alice In Wonderland today. We both like Tim Burton a lot (the stranger the better) and like Johnny Depp very well also. After seeing all the previews and such, we were fired up to see this film. Honestly, I thought it was good but not great. I was prepared to be wow-ed, but I wasn't. Perhaps I expected too much. I did like it, but I'll not own it nor would I expect to see it again...unless someone I know decides they want to see it. I was about to say something to reassure you that I wasn't going to provide any spoilers but two things occurred to me: one, I never give spoilers and two, why worry about spoilers for a film that so closely follows a book? My comments about the film are hard to describe, but the basic gist is that it doesn't really feel like it..."works" to me. I can't get any more specific than that, much as I'd like to do so. Something about it seems sort of disjointed and not in that Alice way you'd expect. My only specific comment is that I didn't like the actor who plays Alice very well. She was very flat and just didn't sell he character to me. She seemed a bit, well, plastic. Depp was as good as you'd expect him to be, I am happy to say. Obviously Lewis Carroll couldn't have imagined this made into film, but I can't help thinking that he'd see this and say that Depp was the perfect Mad Hatter. So, I'd definitely recommend seeing it (we saw it in 3D which was cool, but not really necessary) at least once, but don't be surprised if you're kinda meh afterwards.

  I'm using thinking of using an entity system in my game. So far I've been using Artemis with success. However, I have a question about texture switching. I read that switching textures too often is bad. So I load all the textures when the game loads like so: import org.newdawn.slick.opengl.TextureLoader; ... public HashMap<String, Texture> Textures; ... Then for each texture I do this: Texture tex = TextureLoader.getTexture("PNG", this.getClass().getResourceAsStream(texturePath)); Textures.put(textureName, tex); Then when drawing entities I do this: drawEntity() { glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_2D, Textures.get(entityTexture).getTextureID()); ... } Say I have 50 entities, using 10 different 3D models, each with their own texture. When the drawEntity system runs, it doesn't group by which entities use which texture. So I could be switching textures before drawing each entity! Is there a more efficient way to switch textures between entities? Or is glBindTexture() a good option?

  Although I can actually run San Andreas under wine first of all this is the menu: Well when I press the first menu item, I can play but there are some weird "bugs" with the graphics. The sky turns black, some 3d figures appearing on the screen etc. + the game is very slow. Intel built in graphic card so drivers are built in as well. When I run it on Windows - same computer everything works fine. At DIY site Curbly Chris Job shares a simple alarm clock hack. For years he had an alarm clock with a nice dim display. When it broke he went in search of a replacement but failed to find one that wasn’t . His solution came in form of a sliced up binder divider (the clear, usually tinted, plastic tabs you put in between paper in a binder). • [MINI HOW-TO] Create Keyboard Shortcuts to Applications in Windows

  Do you need just one or a few special keyboard shortcuts for your favorite program(s)? A quick modification to program shortcuts will get you up and running without installing additional software. Creating New Keyboard Shortcuts Go to the start menu shortcut for the program, right-click on it, and select properties. When the properties window opens click in the shortcut key text area. All that you need to do is choose an appropriate letter for the program (i.e. O for Opera, E for Editra, etc.) and type it in the blank. You will not need to type any other keys or combination in…the “Ctrl + Alt +” will be automatically entered for you as soon as you type the letter in. Click OK to finish creating the new keyboard shortcut. Those new keyboard shortcuts will speed up access to your favorite software. Another example from our system using “I” for Iron Browser. Certainly much quicker than using the start menu. Conclusion If you only need one or just a few special keyboard shortcuts then this method provides a quick and simple solution. • Programming concepts taken from the arts and humanities

  After reading Paul Graham's essay Hackers and Painters and Joel Spolsky's Advice for Computer Science College Students, I think I've finally gotten it through my thick skull that I should not be loath to work hard in academic courses that aren't "programming" or "computer science" courses. To quote the former: I've found that the best sources of ideas are not the other fields that have the word "computer" in their names, but the other fields inhabited by makers. Painting has been a much richer source of ideas than the theory of computation. — Paul Graham, "Hackers and Painters" There are certainly other, much stronger reasons to work hard in the "boring" classes. However, it'd also be neat to know that these classes may someday inspire me in programming. My question is: what are some specific examples where ideas from literature, art, humanities, philosophy, and other fields made their way into programming? In particular, ideas that weren't obviously applied the way they were meant to (like most math and domain-specific knowledge), but instead gave utterance or inspiration to a program's design and choice of names. Good examples: The term endian comes from Gulliver's Travels by Tom Swift (see here), where it refers to the trivial matter of which side people crack open their eggs. The terms journal and transaction refer to nearly identical concepts in both filesystem design and double-entry bookkeeping (financial accounting). mkfs.ext2 even says: Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done Off-topic: Learning to write English well is important, as it enables a programmer to document and evangelize his/her software, as well as appear competent to other programmers online. Trigonometry is used in 2D and 3D games to implement rotation and direction aspects. Knowing finance will come in handy if you want to write an accounting package.
