  We one mysql server suddenly the access to it becomes slow of out sudden. So I read some place they said maybe due to var size is it? I am not too sure any idea how to check the root cause of it. The cpu is like nearly 150%. Any indication on it. • What do BCU.exe and BCUService actually do?

  I've got a Gigabyte G32M-ES2L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93GHz CPU running Windows XP SP3 (fully up to date). Today when I booted the machine my firewall (Sygate Personal Firewall) warned me that BCUService.exe wanted to make a call out to the internet. Wondering what they were I did a Google search and while I found out that these programs weren't malware, I didn't find out what they actually do. The information seemed to boil down to: Part of Browser Configuration Utility Auto-recovery Service from DeviceVM, Inc. This program is not important for your system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. Source So before I remove them from my system does anyone know what they actually do and its it worth them taking over 4Mb of memory?

  Hello, I currently run a server at home consisting of SQL Server 2008 .net Framework 2010 VPN Connection ASP.net Web Services running around 5-6 applications supporting a financial trading system that i regularly use. THe only user is me. Recently the requirement to have these applications running in a 24/7 100% uptime (or 99%) environment has become important. No longer can I both meet this requirement and host my server at home on my network - so i am looking to move to a dedicated hosting company. After some research, the only real companies I can find offering such services are geared towards company web-space hosting. I don't need 1TB+ bandwidth, what i need is CPU, Memory and as much control over the environment as possible. Does anyone have any examples of such a service? Thanks in advance.

• Low end dedicated GPU vs. integrated Intel graphics (for light CAD work)

  I have been asked to spec a PC for an interior design business. They are going to do some AutoCAD work (but they won't be using massive datasets or anything), and also use Kitchen Draw, a program that has 3D visualization features and says, in its requirements, that "a recent NVidia or ATI card might be enough". Since they are very limited budget-wise, I had originally picked a GeForce GT 610 card, but this card is so low end that I'm left wondering whether it will be an improvement at all over the dedicated Intel HD2500 graphics chip that comes with the CPU (I will be using an Ivy-Bridge Intel i5). Most of the information I see around is for gaming, which isn't really relevant in my case. Basically, for the use case I've described (light 3D work), can one get away with a current Intel HD graphics chipset? And will a low end GPU like the GT 610 provide a noticeable improvement?

• rsync stuck with the --checksum option

  I use back-in-time to backup my Linux installation. It serves as an advanced wrapper for the rsync command. Today I tried to add /var/log to the list of folders to be backed up and it caused some serious performance problems. The job seems to stuck on a particular file and the CPU usage of the rsync parent process reaches 100%. I then used lsof to see which file caused the problem and it seems to be the /var/log directory. I did some googling and some experiments with the different rsync options and found --checksum to be the offender. Without the parameter, an incremental backup finishes properly in minutes. With it, the process will stuck when rsync tries to sync a constantly changing log file. This kind of make sense, but it still seems to be a bug to me. Am I using the option correctly? Is there a workaround for this?

• My Computer will not turn on?

  I recently built a gaming pc. It was working fine before the following events: I installed a graphics card driver update then: in windows it said that the user experience index needed to be refreshed, so i started the test and somewhere in the middle of the test my pc just switched off. No shutting down just stopped. Now it won't turn back on. I have checked its plugged in and the switch on psu is down, i tried a different power cable and i checked all the connections. When i press the power button nothing happens, no fans no lights no post beep. • Configure Linux server hardware buttons for soft reset or power cycle?

  I have a small modest CentOS server at home. I run it headless because anytime I access it, it's always via SSH. Anyways, tonight it became unresponsive to the network. I could not connect to it to investigate. In this case, I have to hook up a keyboard and monitor to see the problem. I ended up just rebooting it. But after this experience, I was wondering if it's possible to configure the hardware buttons on the CPU case to perform a graceful reboot or graceful power cycle in Linux. Even though the server becomes unresponsive once in a blue moon, it would be nice to simply press a button and have it shutdown all services and gracefully reboot. Anyone know how this could be accomplished?

• What VMWare should I choose?

  I'm new to VMWare stuff. What I need to do is pretty basic: Just to install two different Windows 2008 versions on a server with 2x 4core CPU and 2x 3TB hard disks. I asked my datacenter to install the free version (VMware ESXi 4.1) but apparently it did not recognize 3TB disks. Now I'm wondering whether VMWare 5 can handle 3TB disks, and if so, what variant? • Hardware advice for bitmap / openGL image processing server?

  I am trying to work out a build for a processing server to handle bitmap processing as well as openGL rendering for chroma-keying images and Photoshop automation. My searches here and on Google have turned up surprisingly few results, and seeing that there aren't tags for bitmap or image processing I take it this is a specialized application. The bitmap processing is very cpu-intensive while the chroma-keying and Photoshop stuff is gpu-intensive. I doubt this is a case of over-optimization as our company batches thousands of images a day (currently on individual workstations) and any saving in processing time and workstation down-time would be beneficial. Does anyone have any experience with this type of processing server? Any special considerations that would go into a build like this or am I over-thinking it?

  Hello everyone i'm a little worry about my graphic card. before I get into that I will tell you my system specs. I have intel dx58so mainboard, 6gb corsair xms ddr3 ram, intel i7 960 cpu, and ati hd 5970. I'm also using a coolmaster haf92 case. My OS is vista X64. Here is my issue when I type in dxdiag in (Start Search) and I look into display. I see in (approx total memory) 716mb graphic memory. The ati hd 5970 is a 2gb graphic card. Am I being stuipd or is there an issue.

• Why I'm unable to use up/down arrows in my BIOS?

  My BIOS is loading and when I wanted to change anything, the up/down arrows aren't working. What might be the problem? I want to change boot options, but I'm unable to select the boot from CD option. My BIOS version is f2.3. Do I need to upgrade it? I need my system for 2 more months continuously and I'm afraid if there might be some problem upgrading. But anyway, what might be the cause for this behavior?   I have a backup script that: compress some files generate md5 copy the compressed file to another server. the other server finishes comparing MD5 (to find copy errors). Here it's the core script: nice -n 15 tar -czvf $BKP $PATH_BKP/*.* \ | xargs -I '{}' sh -c "test -f '{}' && md5sum '{}'" \ | tee $MD5 scp -l 80000 $BKP $SCP_BKP scp $MD5 $SCP_BKP This routine got CPU at 90% at gzip routine, slowing down the production server. I tried to add a nice -n 15 but server still hangs. I've already read 1 but the conversation didn't help me. What is the best approach to solve this issue ? I am open to new architectures/solutions :)

• Windows 7 100% Memory Usage (without any process listed as using that much memory)

  When I plug my external USB 2TB hard drive into my windows 7 box, my RAM usage climbs up to all 4 Gigs (but in task manager it shows that all process are small) and the hard drive is churning like crazy. My CPU is only about 20% utilized All I can think of is there is a Virus scanner or an indexer running like crazy. I've tried to kill all virus scanners (AVG and Windows Security Essentials) and it still keeps going. My computer is completely unusable as everything is constantly swapping. I've tried leaving it on for 2 days now and it still hasn't finished whatever it was doing. Any ideas?

  I have an older machine with these specs: CPU: AMD Athlon X2 @ 2,8 Ghz, 2MB L2 RAM: 4 GB DDR2@ 800 Mhz GPU: Asus 4890 TOP 1 GB I want to turn the machine into a media server via XBMC (so good video and wireless peripherial driver support would also be a plus), but I also want to use it as an OpenVPN server so I can tunnel RDP to my other Windows machine in the network. • Computer won't start when connecting SATA HDD

  I just bough a new HDD some time ago and recently i bought another SATA cable to have both HDDs connected at the same time, to transfer all the files from the older one to the newer. When i connected both of them, the computer started working, i tapped F2 to go to bios to make sure it was detected, and then after 5-10 seconds the computer instantly shut down. After this incident, my computer won't start at all when connecting the SATA power supply to the old HDD. If i connect only my new drive, it works without any problem. If i connect only my old drive, or both the old drive and the new one, and then push on the power button, the cpu fan simply rotates about 5 degrees and then stops.. and that's it, the computer doesn't start, and no sound from the pc speaker either. Is there any way to recover my files from the old HDD and transfer them to my new one? I do not want to use the old HDD any more, i only need to save all my files.

  I am new to nagios and we have a small issue I need to ask assistance with. Many of the machines that we monitor can go unresponsive for a bit when some very intensive cpu tasks are run. This makes nagios send warnings and alerts while these hosts are busy reporting things like 'ping timeout' or 'zombie processes' and even swap space warnings, but in actuality there is not a problem. Is there a way to configure nagios to not send such alerts, but check x number of times over a period of time and only then send an alert at the end of that time if the server in question has not recovered?. Looking at the commands.cfg file, I see entries like this: define command{ command_name check_local_swap command_line $USER1$/check_swap -w $ARG1$ -c $ARG2$ } How could I modify this example to accomplish what I want above.   I'm working on a university project, where I have Tomcat as a web server, and I want to create a multi user environment on top of linux, so every user that logs into my website has his own credentials, and he can access only his own data (files and folders...). The main issue is that the purpose of the website is executing code on the server-side, so I must have a good (reasonable) protection against malicious code. (a user destroying his own user is fine by me) I thought that defining a linux-user for every website-user is the best solution - it isolates each user from the other, and I can define each one's permissions. Can I create users in linux using shell commands? Can I configure max quota/memory/cpu for a user? Anyone has another idea for managing that kind of multi-user environment?

• Restrict whole system on certain cores except a few process?

  Hi I am running some latency sensitive program on a Linux machine (more specifically, CentOS 6), and I don't want the threads of the process being preempted. So in my plan, the first step is to set cpu affinity of the threads so that threads are running on separate cores, so they don't preempt each other. Then the second step is to make sure other processes in the system not running on these cores. So my question is: is it possible to restrict the whole system running on certain cores, except this process? This should apply to any newly created processes in the future.

• Direct2d off-screen rendering and hardware acceleration

  I'm trying to use direct2d to render images off-screen using WindowsAPICodePack. This is easily achieved using WicBitmapRenderTarget but sadly it's not hardware accelerated. • Parallelism in .NET – Introduction

  Parallel programming is something that every professional developer should understand, but is rarely discussed or taught in detail in a formal manner.  Software users are no longer content with applications that lock up the user interface regularly, or take large amounts of time to process data unnecessarily.  Modern development requires the use of parallelism.  There is no longer any excuses for us as developers. Learning to write parallel software is challenging.  It requires more than reading that one chapter on parallelism in our programming language book of choice… Today’s systems are no longer getting faster with each generation; in many cases, newer computers are actually slower than previous generation systems.  Modern hardware is shifting towards conservation of power, with processing scalability coming from having multiple computer cores, not faster and faster CPUs.  Our CPU frequencies no longer double on a regular basis, but Moore’s Law is still holding strong.  Now, however, instead of scaling transistors in order to make processors faster, hardware manufacturers are scaling the transistors in order to add more discrete hardware processing threads to the system. This changes how we should think about software.  In order to take advantage of modern systems, we need to redesign and rewrite our algorithms to work in parallel.  As with any design domain, it helps tremendously to have a common language, as well as a common set of patterns and tools. For .NET developers, this is an exciting time for parallel programming.  Version 4 of the .NET Framework is adding the Task Parallel Library.  This has been back-ported to .NET 3.5sp1 as part of the Reactive Extensions for .NET, and is available for use today in both .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.0 beta. In order to fully utilize the Task Parallel Library and parallelism, both in .NET 4 and previous versions, we need to understand the proper terminology.  For this series, I will provide an introduction to some of the basic concepts in parallelism, and relate them to the tools available in .NET.
