• How can I check whether Exposé is being activated or not?

  Hi, I'm creating an application that emulates MacBook's multi-touch Trackpad. As you may know, on MacBook's trackpad if you swipe 4 fingers up, it triggers the Show Desktop. if you swipe 4 fingers down, it shows the Exposé. However, if the Show Desktop is being activated and you swipe 4 fingers down, it will come back to the normal mode. The same goes with the Exposé: if the Exposé is being activated and you swipe 4 fingers up, it will also come back to the normal mode. Here is the problem: I use the keyboard shortcut F3 to show the Exposé and F11 to show the Show Desktop. The problem is, when the Show Desktop is being activated, if I press F3, it will go straight to the Exposé. And when the Exposé is being activated, if I press F11 it will go straight to the Show Desktop. But I want it to behave like Trackpad, which I guess its code may look like this - FourFingersDidSwipeUp { if (isExposeBeingActivated() || isShowDesktopBeingActivated()) { pressKey("Esc"); } else { pressKey("F11"); } } But I don't know how to implement the "isExposeBeingActivated()" and "isShowDesktopBeingActivated()" methods. I've tried creating a window and check whether its size has changed (on assumption that if the Expose is being activated, its size should be smaller), but the system always returns the same size. I tried monitoring the background processes during the Expose, but nothing happened. Does anyknow have any suggestions on this? (I'm sorry if my English sounds weird.)

• Should the entity framework + self tracking entities be saving me time

  I've been using the entity framework in combination with the self tracking entity code generation templates for my latest silverlight to WCF application. It's the first time I've used the entity framework in a real project and my hope was that I would save myself a lot of time and effort by being able to automatically update the whole data access layer of my project when my database schema changed. Happily I've found that to be the case, updating my database schema by adding a new table, changing column names, adding new columns etc. etc. can be propagated to my business object classes by using the update from database option on the entity framework model. Where I'm hurting is the CRUD operations within my WCF service in response to actions on my Silverlight client. I use the same self tracking entity framework business objects in my Silverlight app but I find I'm continually having to fight against problems such as foreign key associations not being handled correctly when updating an object or the change tracker getting confused about the state of an object at the Silverlight end and the data access operation within the WCF layer throwing a wobbly. It's got to a point where I have now spent more time dealing with this quirks than I have on my previous project where I used Linq-to-SQL as the starting point for rolling my own business objects. Is it just me being hopeless or is the self tracking entities approach something that should be avoided until it's more mature?

• Alternative Python standard library reference

  I love Python; I absolutely despise its official documentation. Tutorials do not count as library references, but that appears to be what they're attempting. What I really want is the ability to find a class in the standard library and view documentation for all of its properties and methods. Actionscript, MSDN, and Java all do this just fine (although each with their odd quirks). Where is this for python? For example, I wanted to sort a list. mylist.sort(). Awesome. But what if I wanted it sorted in descending order? Official documentation is not - much - help. Or what if I wanted to specify a key function? That's also supported: mylist.sort(key=lamba item: item.customVar)- but documented...where? I understand that Python's approach to OOP may not be equivalent to Java et. al. Maybe list isn't actually a class - maybe it's just a function that returns an iterable when the tachyon beams are set to glorious and the unboxed hyper enumeration is quantized, but...I don't care. I just want to know how to sort lists. (Apologies for the angst - too much caffeine today)

• Why isn't my UITableView in a popover appearing in the correct scroll position?

  I have a split view-based app that presents a master-detail interface, and uses a popover to present the master list when in portrait mode. The popover presents a sectioned table view that ultimately gets populated by a subclass of NSFetchedResultsController. I can tap the tool bar button to present the master list, scroll to whatever row, and tap the row to dismiss the popover. My problem is that if the table is scrolled past the top of the second section, when I dismiss the popover and then later tap the toolbar button to re-present it, the table's scroll position is always set such that the first row of the second section is at the top of the list. If I haven't scrolled past the top of the second section, it correctly remembers its scroll position when the table is presented again. Similarly, in landscape mode, if I scroll the table past the top of the third section and then rotate to portrait, when I come back to landscape the scroll position is always set such that the first row of the third section is at the top of the list. I tried calling -scrollToNearestSelectedRowAtScrollPosition:animated in both the master view controller's -viewWillAppear, as well as in the split view delegate's splitViewController:popoverController:willPresentViewController:, to no effect. Anybody have a clue what I might be doing wrong?

• My OpenCL kernel is slower on faster hardware.. But why?

  Hi folks, As I was finishing coding my project for a multicore programming class I came up upon something really weird I wanted to discuss with you. We were asked to create any program that would show significant improvement in being programmed for a multi-core platform. I’ve decided to try and code something on the GPU to try out OpenCL. I’ve chosen the matrix convolution problem since I’m quite familiar with it (I’ve parallelized it before with open_mpi with great speedup for large images). So here it is, I select a large GIF file (2.5 MB) [2816X2112] and I run the sequential version (original code) and I get an average of 15.3 seconds. I then run the new OpenCL version I just wrote on my MBP integrated GeForce 9400M and I get timings of 1.26s in average.. So far so good, it’s a speedup of 12X!! But now I go in my energy saver panel to turn on the “Graphic Performance Mode” That mode turns off the GeForce 9400M and turns on the Geforce 9600M GT my system has. Apple says this card is twice as fast as the integrated one. Guess what, my timing using the kick-ass graphic card are 3.2 seconds in average… My 9600M GT seems to be more than two times slower than the 9400M.. For those of you that are OpenCL inclined, I copy all data to remote buffers before starting, so the actual computation doesn’t require roundtrip to main ram. Also, I let OpenCL determine the optimal local-worksize as I’ve read they’ve done a pretty good implementation at figuring that parameter out.. • How do I grant anonymous access to a url using FormsAuthentication?

  For the most part, my webapp requires authentication to do anything. There are a few pages, namely the homepage, that I'd like people to be able to access without authenticating. Specifically, I'd like to allow anonymous access to these urls: /home /default.aspx I'm using asp.net MVC and FormsAuthentication. Both urls point to the same view: /home/index.aspx Here is my current configuration in web.config. <authentication mode="Forms"> <forms loginUrl="~/Account/LogOn" timeout="2880" /> </authentication> <authorization> <deny users="?" /> </authorization> Reading the documentation for the authorization tag, it says "Configures the authorization for a Web application, controlling client access to URL resources." • Any good tools or tips for fuzz testing Windows forms applications?

  I'm maintaining a ~300K LOC C# legacy thick-client application with a Windows.Forms interface. The app is full of little bugs and quirks. For example, I recently discovered a bug where if a users edits and tabs (not clicks) through cells on a DataViewGrid, and leaves the a certain cell selected, the app gets an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exception. I discover (or get a bug report of) something new like this about every week or two. I've had enough, and was thinking of trying some sort of fuzz testing on the application to try to ferret out undiscovered issues. If I roll-my-own fuzz testing, I'd assume I at least need to be able to generate test harnesses that run pieces of my app (main window, FormX, FormY, FormZ, ...) independently and try to inject events into them. I was trying to look for tools suited for this, but so far have come up with nothing for Win Forms. (There seems to be no shortage of fuzz testing tools for web apps, however). Any helpful ideas?

• Help me find an appropriate ruby/python parser generator

  The first parser generator I've worked with was Parse::RecDescent, and the guides/tutorials available for it were great, but the most useful feature it has was it's debugging tools, specifically the tracing capabilities ( activated by setting $RD_TRACE to 1 ). I am looking for a parser generator that can help you debug it's rules. The thing is, it has to be written in python or in ruby, and have a verbose mode/trace mode or very helpful debugging techniques. Does anyone know such a parser generator ? EDIT: when I said debugging, I wasn't referring to debugging python or ruby. I was referring to debugging the parser generator, see what it's doing at every step, see every char it's reading, rules it's trying to match. Hope you get the point. BOUNTY EDIT: to win the bounty, please show a parser generator framework, and illustrate some of it's debugging features. I repeat, I'm not interested in pdb, but in parser's debugging framework. Also, please don't mention treetop. I'm not interested in it.

  Hi there, I have a set of items which i am grouping using the muenchian method using keys. This is working great however when i try to do things with the first x number of items it is doing it on the x number of items in each group rather than across the whole set of results. • Set the caret/cursor position to the end of the string value WPF textbox

  I am try to set the caret/cursor position to the end of the string value in my WPF textbox when I open my window for the first time. I use the FocusManager to set the focus on my textbox when my window opens. Nothing seems to work. Any ideas? • Help with Cygwin bash file

  Hi, I have a bash file, which I’m trying to run in Cygwin on a Windows 7 platform, but I gives me some odd errors when doing so. The bash file works on my Linux system. The bach file looks like this: for ((r=0; r <10; r++)) netcat localhost 4444 < myfile.file & done wait but I’m getting an error for my for-loop. More precise it writes: ./tuning_test.bsh: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `(' '/tuning_test.bsh: line 1: `?for ((r=0; r <10; r++)) I do not understand it because I was sure that I’ve a working bash file on my Linux. I even tried to find a for-loop example from a Linux-bash site and run it but with same error. I’m brand new to Cygwin and doesn’t know if it has some small quirks or some other thing I have to be aware of and I’ve tried to look through the documentation and FAQ on their homepage. • Offline iOS web app: loads my manifest, but doesn't work offline

  I'm writing a web app to be used offline on iOS. I've created a manifest, am serving it up as text/cache-manifest, and it usually works fine, when running inside Safari. If I add it as an app to my home screen, then turn on Airplane mode, it can't open the app at all -- I get an error and it offers to close the app. (I thought this was the entire purpose of an offline app!) When I load the app a first time when online, I can see in my logs that it's requesting every page listed in the manifest. If I turn off Airplane mode, and load the app, I can see the first file it's requesting is my main.html file (which is both listed in the manifest, and has the manifest=... attribute). It then requests the manifest, and all my other files, getting 200's for all (and 304's for anything requested a second time during this load). When I load the page in Chrome, and click around, the logs show the only thing it's trying to reach on the server is "/favicon.ico" (which is a 404, and which I don't think iOS Safari tries to load, anyway). All of the files listed in the manifest are valid and served without error. The Chrome inspector lists, under "APPLICATION CACHE", all the cached files I've listed which I expect. The entire set of files is about 50 KB, way under any limit on offline resources that I've found. Is this supposed to work, i.e., am I supposed to be able to create an offline iOS app using only HTML/CSS/JS? And where do I go about figuring out why it's failing to work offline? (Related but doesn't sound quite the same to me, since it's about Safari and not a standalone app: "Can't get a web app to work offline on iPod")

• DirectShow Filter I wrote dies after 10-24 seconds in Skype video call

  I've written a DirectShow push filter for use with Skype using Delphi Pro 6 and the DSPACK DirectShow library. In preview mode, when you test a video input device in the Skype client Video Settings window, my filter works flawlessly. I can leave it up and running for many minutes without an error. However when I start a video call after 10 to 24 seconds, never longer, the video feed freezes. The call continues fine with the call duration counter clicking away the seconds, but the video feed is dead, stuck on whatever frame the freeze happened (although after a long while it turns black which I believe means Skype has given up on the filter). I tried attaching to the process from my debugger with a breakpoint literally set on every method call and none of them are hit once the freeze takes place. It's as if the thread that makes the DirectShow FillBuffer() call to my filter on behalf of Skype is dead or has been shutdown. I can't trace my filter in the debugger because during a Skype call I get weird int 1 and int 3 debugger hard interrupt calls when a Skype video call is in progress. This behavior happens even with my standard web cam input device selected and my DirectShow filter completely unregistered as a ActiveX server. I suspect it might be some "anti-debugging" code since it doesn't happen in video input preview mode. Either way, that is why I had to attach to the process after the fact to see if my FillBuffer() called was still being called and instead discovered that appears to be dead. Note, my plain vanilla USB web cam's DirectShow filter does not exhibit the freezing behavior and works fine for many minutes. There's something about my filter that Skype doesn't like. I've tried Sleep() statements of varying intervals, no Sleep statements, doing virtually nothing in the FillBuffer() call. Nothing helps. If anyone has any ideas on what might be the culprit here, I'd like to know. Thanks, Robert

• Problem with Binding Multiple Objects on WPF

  Hi, I'm developing a user control called SearchBox, that will act as a replacer for ComboBox for multiple records, as the performance in ComboBox is low for this scenario, but I'm having a big binding problem. I have a base control with a DependencyProperty called SelectedItem, and my SearchControl shows that control so that the user can select the record. The SearchControl also has a DependencyProperty called SelectedItem on it, and it is being updated when the user selects something on the base control, but the UI, wich has the SearchControl, is not being updated. I used a null converter so that I could see if the property was updating, but it's not. • compile ICS/JB camera application - native library jni-mosaic error

  I would like to use the Panorama mode that the ICS/JB camera application has. The camera itself works, for stills and video recording but as soon as I change to panorama mode, it crashes. Can anyone maybe point me to the right jni-mosaic lib or maybe to what I'm doing wrong? Do I need to do something in order to make my app use the JNI/SO files?

• Fastest Method to Learn Web Design for a Developer

  I am a Web developer and in my projects I have noticed that my weakest point is not being good at the front-end design. Relying on other designers can be annoying if they are not able to produce as quickly as I want. My perspective on HTML/CSS is that it is basically a big hack that amazingly works. There are too many CSS and browser specific bugs/quirks to learn and remember them all without spending extreme amounts of time trying to untangle everything. Is there a fast track route to getting CSS into my brain? I have looked at some CSS books, but to me they really read as long lists of how to render things correctly in IE6 and how to make corners rounded. (Seriously why does it require so many tricks to make a sharp corner round? On any platform but the Web this would be called a major oversight.) Does there exist something that does the analogous to CSS that jQuery does for JavaScript? Using jQuery you don't need to know JavaScript well to make things that work. I am not interested in learning why IE6 does things in weird ways because I don't care about supporting it at all. I am more interested in a method of learning how to use CSS to do what I want without spending hours and hours reading obscure blogs.

• Navigation Controller Views in Landscape

  Hi, I have set up a navigation controller ( navController ) in Portrait mode to which I push all the viewcontrollers I have. Now when a user switches to Landscape mode, I need to display all the views as a coverflow. For this I use [navController viewControllers] to get all the view controllers in the stack. In the Landscape view controller NSArray * arr = [navController viewControllers]; self.view = [arr objectAtIndex:0]; [arr objectAtIndex:0]; returns the correct view ( the bottombost viewcontroller's view in the nav stack ). My problem is these views never get displayed ie the views extracted from the navController never gets displayed. If i try to create a new view and insert all the subviews of a view, it gets displayed. eg : UIView * newView = [[UIView alloc] init]; for (UIView *subView in [arr objectAtIndex:0]) [newView addSubView:subView]; self.view = newView; The above piece of code works. But simply adding the view doesnt seem to work.. Can anyone explain the solution? Many thanks

This may be due to absent or incorrectly specified EndpointIdentity in the EndpointAddress used to create the channel. Please verify the EndpointIdentity specified or implied by the EndpointAddress correctly identifies the remote endpoint. • Help me re-center a ModalPopup within an iframe when the iframe's parent window scrolls

  I have a web page with an iframe in it (I don't like it, but that's the way it has to be). It's not a cross-domain iframe so there's nothing to worry about there. I have written a jQuery extension that does the centering of a ModalPopup (which is called from an overridden AjaxControlToolkit.ModalPopupBehavior._layout method) based on the width and height of the iframe's parent, so that it looks centered even though the iframe is not in the center of the page. It's a lot of tricky stuff, especially since the web page I added the iframe to runs in quirks mode. Now, I've also overridden AjaxControlToolkit.ModalPopupBehavior._attachPopup, so that when the parent window resizes or scrolls, the ModalPopup inside of the iframe recenter's itself relative to the new size of the parent window. However, the same code that attaches the popup to the parent window's resize event does NOT work for the parent window's scroll event. • Windows 7 DWM weirdness

  I'm looking to write a FOSS "Alt+Tab" replacement (window switcher) for Windows, since there are a few features I feel it's (still) lacking; but I'm noticing two quirks I can't seem to fix: #1. (Somewhat Unrelated) In the default Windows 7 window switcher, one computer allows left clicking on a thumbnail to focus the window; however on another, similarly specced computer, I have to use a right click. The only difference between these two fresh installs is the theme. Any ideas? #2. (Directly Related) In both the default Windows 7 window switcher and the DWM API output, minimized windows often have no thumbnail, and instead show only the taskbar. This has been a long running problem with the Windows API, and in the past I've seen the popular recommendation being "restore (un-minimize) the window, take a screenshot, then re-minimize" - but this is sloppy and causes flickering, etc. Has anyone done this successfully using the newer DWM API? If sharing code, I'd prefer C# syntax, but VB.NET will do as well. Thanks!

• Windows console

  Hello. Well, I have a simple question, at least I hope its simple. I was interested in win32 console for a while. Our teacher told us, that windows console is just for DOS and real mode emulation purposes. Well, I know it is not true, becouse DOS applications are runned by emulator which only uses console to display output. Another thing I learned is that console is built into Windows since NT. Well. But what I could not find is, how actually are console programs written to use console. I use Visual C++ for programming (well, for learning). So, the only thing I need to do for using console is select console project. I first thought that windows decides wheather it run app in console or tries to run app in window mode. So I created win32 program and tried printf(). Well, I could not compile it. I know that by definition printf() prints text or variables to stdout. I also found that stdout is the console interface for output. But, I could not find what actually stdout is. So, basicly what I want to ask is, where is the difference between console app and win32 app. I thought that windows starts console when it gets command from "console-family" functions. But obvisously it does not, so there must be some code that actually commands windows to create console interface. And the second question is, when the console is created, how does windows recognize which console terminal is used for what app? I mean, what actually is stdout? Is it a area in memory , or some windows routine that is called? Thanks.

• 'JQuery' is undefined

  I am working on a ASP.net project created with local file system settings. I am using MVC and Jquery. Jquery is working fine when I run the application in debug mode i.e. in ASP.net Development server. I am trying to host the application in IIS 7. In hosted mode, it does not recognize Jquery and gives scripting error 'Jquery is undefined'. The locations of the script files is unchanged in both modes. Can anybody have any clue what can be the reason and how to solve this. • How to map different UI views in a RESTful web application?

  Hello, I'm designing a web application, which will support both standard UIs (accessed via browsers) and a RESTful API (an XML/JSON-based web service). User agents will be able to differentiate between these by using different values in the Accept HTTP header. The RESTful API will use the following URI structure (example for an "article" resource): GET /article/ - gets a list of articles POST /article/ - adds a new article PUT /article/{id} - updates an existing article based on {id} DELETE /article/{id} - deletes an existing article based on {id} The UI part of the application will however need to support multiple views, for example: a standard resource view a view for submitting a new resource a view for editing an existing resource a view for deleting an existing resource (i.e. display delete confirmation) Note that the latter three views are still accessed via GET, even though they are processed via overloaded POST. Possible solution: Introduce additional parameters (keywords) into URIs which would identify individual views - i.e. on top of the above, the application would support the following URIs (but only for Content-Type: text/html): GET /article/add - displays a form for adding a new article (fetched via GET, processed via POST) GET /article/123 - displays article 123 in "view" mode (fetched via GET) GET /article/123/edit - displays article 123 in "edit" mode (fetched via GET, processed via PUT overloaded as POST) GET /article/123/delete - displays "delete" confirmation for article 123 (fetched via GET, processed via DELETE overloaded as POST) A better implementation of the above might be to put the add/edit/delete keywords into a GET parameter - since they do not change the resource we're working with, it might be better to keep the base URI same for all of them. My question is: How would you map the above URI structure to UIs served to the regular user, considering that there can be several views per each resource, please? Do you agree with the possible solution detailed above, or would you recommend a different approach based on your experience? NB: we've already implemented an application which consists of a standalone RESTful API and a standalone web application. • Can FAXCOMEXLib and Windows Fax Service send a color fax?

  We are in the process of testing different options for sending faxes from within our C# code (receiving faxes is not necessary). One of those options is to use FAXCOMEXLib. Without surprise, I've had pretty good success sending out black & white faxes with FAXCOMExLib. But we also have a requirement to support sending color faxes. So I execute the following code (just a snippet): IFaxDocument oFaxDoc = new FaxDocumentClass(); oFaxDoc.Body = @"C:\Test\color_image.jpg"; oFaxDoc.ConnectedSubmit(m_oFaxServer); The image is 24bit color, 1728x2304, 204x196 dpi. For the most part, this process works (with a couple of small quirks) and the fax shows up in my "Windows Fax and Scan" outbox (I'm on Vista). The problem is the image has been dithered to a 1bit black & white image. I assume that what I see in "Windows Fax and Scan" is what is actually transmitted. So is there a way to send a color fax using this technology? Are we missing a configuration option somewhere to make it work?
