• Inspecting the model in a Rails application

  I am learning some Ruby on Rails, and am a newbie. Most of my background is in ASP.net MVC on the back end. As I play with a basic scaffold project, I wonder about this case: you jump into an established Rails project and want to get to know the model. Based on what I have seen so far (again, simple scaffold), the properties for a given class are not immediately revealed. I don't see property accessors on the model classes. I do understand that this is because of the dynamic nature of Ruby and such things are not necessary or even perhaps desirable. Convention over code, I get that. (Am familiar with dynamic concepts, mostly via JS.) But if I am somewhere off in a view, and want to quickly know whether the (eg) Person object has a MiddleName property, how would I find that out? I don't have to go into the migrations, do I?

• Error running phusion passenger in standalone mode

  I'm trying to run standalone phusion passenger so that I can run different ruby rvm configurations on the same host. I already have ruby and passenger running fine on this host. I am following the instructions here. When I run standalone passenger the first time, it appears to successfully install nginx. But then when it tries to run, I get this error: [root@clark directra]# passenger start -a 127.0.0.1 -p 3001 -d --user dweb *** ERROR *** Could not start Passenger Nginx core: nginx: [alert] could not open error log file: open() "/tmp/passenger-standalone.16757/logs/error.log" failed (2: No such file or directory) nginx: [alert] Unable to start the Phusion Passenger watchdog (/var/lib/passenger-standalone/3.0.11-x86-ruby1.9.3-linux-gcc4.1.2-1002/support/ agents/PassengerWatchdog): Permission denied (13) (13: Permission denied) Stopping web server... done FWIW, /tmp is writeable. • How to register a domain for a beginner?

  I've never registered a .com , .net like domain before, and I would like to do some research before doing so. I currently have a ruby on rails app running Heroku. Is there anything special I have to do prior to registering domain on my ruby on rails app at all? Or is it as easy as just inserting my current Heroku address to mask it with another .com or .net name? Is there some special features I should look for registering domain? Or is it typical for domain seller to just sell domain names only? Any recommendations on sellers? Thank you.

  I've read recently some criticism (see 1, 2, 3) about the packaging distribution system of two popular programming languages: Ruby gems and Python eggs. The most important argument stated against them is that they replace the system package manager (in case there is one, as in every Linux distribution), which makes eggs and gems difficult to track, code difficult to patch, and so on. Are actually eggs and gems right? In case not, are there any alternatives to distributing Python or Ruby modules? Should developers focus on taking advantage of package manager (apt-get, pacman, ...) capabilities?

  My development env. is, Win7 Ultimate Ruby 1.9.2p180 Rails 3.0.9 Gem 1.8.5 sqlite3 and mysql2 gems are installed My IDE is netbeans 7.0. ruby plugin for netbeans 7.0 is installed. i want to create a new rails app thru netbeans. but it hangs at the process of 25%. does someone hit the same issue? Is there a solution? From the output, i can see the rails app file structures are created. I know some of you may suggest me to use linux to develop rails app. that's an option. but i am newer to linux. i'd like to use win7 at present.

• OSGI & Apache Commons-DBCP Classloading Issue

  I inherited some code that is using the Apache commons-dbcp Connection pools in an OSGi bundle. This code works fine with Eclipse/Equinox OSGi version 3.4.3 (R34x_v20081215), commons-dbcp 1.2.2 and the postgres jdbc3 8.3.603 bundles from springsource.org. I wanted to modernize, maybe this was my first mistake! When I use the new version of Felix or Equinox OSGI Cores with the new postgresql JDBC3 or JDBC4 bundles along with the latest version of commons-dbcp (1.4.1), I am getting a classloading issue. I have done numerous searches and found that the commons-dbcp code should have a fix DBCP-214, but it still seems to fail. I have tried to put the org.postgresql on the commons-dbcp MANIFEST.MF import-package line, but that did not work either. I wrote a simple test in an activator that first does a basic class.forName() and DriverManager.getConnection(), this works fine, but when I add in BasicDataSource() and setup the connection with BasicDataSource.getConnection(), I get the ClassNotFoundException. • Sending USR2 to mongrel_rails sometimes results in an “Address already in use” on the restart

  We have a rolling-restart mode for our mongrel cluster that sends a USR2 signal to each running process. This works great, most of the time. • Apache virtual host proxy to nginx for ruby

  I'm running a few php sites off apache and want to start rails dev. I've installed rvm/nginx and can get my ruby site by going to websiteroot.com:8000... How do I pass ruby.websiteroot.com to websiteroot.com:8000? What's the best way for me to route a subdomain for ruby dev?? I'd switch to nginx completely if it weren't for all my php sites--seems like it's easier to just proxy for ruby. Advice? My nginx config looks like this: server{ listen 8000; server_name website.com; root /home/me/sites/ruby_folder/public; ... } My apache config looks like this: <VirtualHost> ServerName ruby.website.com ProxyPreserveHost on ProxyPass / http://127.0.0.1:8000 ProxyPassReverse / http://127.0.0.1:8000 </VirtualHost>

• rpm -Uvh & yum install

  I am new to linux and wants to understand the reason for using some commands. I am trying to install PostgreSQL on CentOs by following the instructions here. First we do rpm -ivh pgdg-centos91-9.1-4.noarch.rpm which installs the rpm package into the system. But why does it ask us to do yum install postgresql91-server (which i assume installs postgresql) again if we have used rpm -ivh to install the package? Additionally, what is the reason for adding the lines exclude=postgresql* into /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo under [base] and [updates]. Why is it that we exclude yum from accessing these packages, then use yum to install postgresql91-server?

• When using RAID10 + BBWC why is it better to separate PostgreSQL data files from OS and transaction logs than to keep them all on the same array?

  I've seen the advice everywhere (including here and here): keep your OS partition, DB data files and DB transaction logs on separate discs/arrays. The general recommendation is to use RAID1 for OS, RAID10 for data (or RAID5 if load is very read-biased) and RAID1 for transaction logs. However, considering that you will need at least 6 or 8 drives to build this setup, wouldn't a RAID10 over 6-8 drives with BBWC perform better? What if the drives are SSDs? I'm talking here about internal server drives, not SAN.

  I need to display a UI element (e.g. a star or checkmark) for employees that are 'favorites' of the current user (another employee). The Employee model has the following relationship defined to support this: has_and_belongs_to_many :favorites, :class_name => "Employee", :join_table => "favorites", :association_foreign_key => "favorite_id", :foreign_key => "employee_id" The favorites has two fields: employee_id, favorite_id. If I were to write SQL, the following query would give me the results that I want: SELECT id, account, IF( ( SELECT favorite_id FROM favorites WHERE favorite_id=p.id AND employee_id = ? ) IS NULL, FALSE, TRUE) isFavorite FROM employees Where the '?' would be replaced by the session[:user_id]. How do I represent the isFavorite scalar query in Rails? Another approach would use a query like this: SELECT id, account, IF(favorite_id IS NULL, FALSE, TRUE) isFavorite FROM employees e LEFT OUTER JOIN favorites f ON e.id=f.favorite_id AND employee_id = ? Again, the '?' is replaced by the session[:user_id] value. I've had some success writing this in Rails: ee=Employee.find(:all, :joins=>"LEFT OUTER JOIN favorites ON employees.id=favorites.favorite_id AND favorites.employee_id=1", :select=>"employees.*,favorites.favorite_id") Unfortunately, when I try to make this query 'dynamic' by replacing the '1' with a '?', I get errors. ee=Employee.find(:all, :joins=>["LEFT OUTER JOIN favorites ON employees.id=favorites.favorite_id AND favorites.employee_id=?",1], :select=>"employees.*,favorites.favorite_id") Obviously, I have the syntax wrong, but can :joins expressions be 'dynamic'? Is this a case for a Lambda expression? • Rails 3 NameError (cannot remove Object::Version) error

  Can anyone point me at what might be causing this error? There is no ApplicationTrace, and it locks the server hard on my development machine. I think it has something to do with the way rails reloads your classes in development mode, and it appears to have something to do with a Version constant. I can't find a reference to this though.   Hello, I would like to know how to explicitly set a timeout for the Ruby DBI ODBC driver, when connecting to SQL Server. I would like long running queries to simply timeout and cancel themselves, saving further server resources and Rails processes. This was happening while we were using the ADO based Ruby driver, but now that we've switched to DBD::ODBC we are no longer experiencing timeouts. I've looked around but cannot find out how to set the query timeout value. I've tried explicitly setting some values in the driver, and specifying both Timeout and ConnectionTimeout and Connect Timeout in the DSN configuration for the connection. No luck. Your tips and advice are very appreciated. Thanks! Seth

• PostgreSQL: Full Text Search - How to search partial words ?

  Hello, Following a question posted here about how I can increase the speed on one of my SQL Search methods, I was advised to update my table to make use of Full Text Search. This is what I have now done, using Gist indexes to make searching faster. On some of the "plain" queries I have noticed a marked increase which I am very happy about. However, I am having difficulty in searching for partial words. For example I have several records that contain the word Squire (454) and I have several records that contain Squirrel (173). Now if I search for Squire it only returns the 454 records but I also want it to return the Squirrel records as well. My query looks like this SELECT title FROM movies WHERE vectors @@ to_tsoquery('squire'); I thought I could do to_tsquery('squire%') but that does not work. How do I get it to search for partial matches ? Also, in my database I have records that are movies and others that are just TV Shows. These are differentiated by the "" over the name, so like "Munsters" is a TV Show, whereas The Munsters is the film of the show. What I want to be able to do is search for just the TV Show AND just the movies. Any idea on how I can achieve this ? Regards Anthoni

• Is there an HTML browser rendering engine for Ruby?

  Given a URL, I would like to be able to render the returned HTML to know width and height for each div, fonts' size for each piece of text, color of each element, position of each element on screen, etc. A possible approach could be traversing the DOM tree with Hpricot and checking CSS style by parsing the associated stylesheet using css_parser gem. But this would not consider default styles, inheritance, floats, etc. In Java there's Cobra, a Java Web Renderer, which is able to render a web page and query attributes like width, font size, etc. for each fragment. I could use Cobra with JRuby or similar solutions, but prefer a Ruby native tool. Is there any library like this for Ruby?

  I was trying to send a GET request to Twitter (user ID replaced for privacy reasons) using Net::HTTP: url = URI.parse("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345") resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) this throws an exception in Net::HTTP: NoMethodError: undefined method empty?' for #<URI::HTTP:0x59f5c04> from /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:1470:ininitialize' just by coincidence, I stumbled upon a similar code snippet, which used URI.encode prior to URI.parse, so I copied that and tried again: url = URI.parse(URI.encode("http://api.twitter.com/1/friends/ids.json?user_id=12345")) resp = Net::HTTP.get_response(url) now it works fine, but why? There are no reserved characters that need escaping in the URL I mentioned, so why do I have to call URI.encode for get_response to succeed?

For example: {2,4,233,5}. Now, I want to get data from table "items" for choosen row from table "some_choosen_data_in_order" with order for elements in array type. The my attempt is JOIN: SELECT I.* FROM items AS I JOIN some_choosen_data_in_order AS S ON I.id = ANY(S.id_items) WHERE S.id = ? Second attempt was subquery like: SELECT I.* FROM items AS I WHERE I.id = ANY (ARRAY[SELECT S.id_items FROM some_choosen_data_in_order WHERE id = ?]) But none of them keep IDs order in array field. Could You help me, how to get data from "items" table with correspond with array IDs order from "some_choosen_data_in_order" table for specyfic row?
