• Edubuntu - Java Iced Tea and Carnegie Learning

  I've recently built a computer lab running various forms of Ubuntu. I'm testing out Edubuntu to see if it is a better fit for our school, but I'm running up against a problem I can't resolve. One of the programs we use is Carnegie Learning Online, a Java program that I've managed to get working on both Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04. After updating Java (all distros), when you access the website a .tt applet file is downloaded. With Java installed you can select the IcedTea plugin to open it. On 10.04/12.04, this then opens a new window, Java runs a setup of some sort, and then a new window with the Carnegie program opens. On Edubuntu however, once you've told IcedTea to run it....nothing happens. No errors, just nothing. I've tried this with an older update of Java as well as the newest. Any ideas?

What's the best way to deal with this scenario? I want to put together a boilerplate response including these points: How far have you gone with this on your own?   What is the correct way to implement hit or touch detection for non-rectangular sprites in Cocos2d? I am working on a jigsaw puzzle, so our sprites have some strange forms (jigsaw puzzle bricks).   I'm looking for ideas / open source frameworks to use for creating individual Analytics for user profiles and all the other profile types. Users will have different custom metrics, businesses willl have seperate metrics, the admin section will have seperate, Advertises will have seperate, etc. So basically the goal is to have 1 framework in place for all Analytics, which will be custom user to user and even use that for the system analytic needs also. It will include data analytics as there will be user ratings/reviews to perfomr data mining on for businesses, USers will have basic reporting on their needs (like friend demographics, filter by different preferences, etc). For example I was trying to pint a document from acrobat reader and opened printer properties to print the content front and back of the paper. If you observe there is a help button before close button. To get help on options of “Print on Both Sides” you would need to click on help button first and then click on the area on which you want to see the help. above picture shows help text for the options of “Print on Both Sides”. If you would like to get the help using keyboard you can use F1 key. • MVC - Sanitizing data, where?

  I'm using CakePHP but it's a question about the MVC pattern. I have in my form the input-text for the tags (separated by commas). To add the tags I've created a Tag model method that basically check if the tag exists and then add the new tag or just a new unit in the tag counter (the Tag model has these fields: id, name, slug, count). In the controller I explode the tags field and pass one tag at a time. The question is: where do I sanitize data? In the controller or in the model method? I think it should be in the controller because that's where I explode but in term of reusability I think I should sanitize data in the model. What do you think?

• Combining a content management system with ASP.NET

  I am going to be creating a site that seems like it requires a blend of a content management system (CMS) and some custom web development (which is done in ASP.NET MVC). I have plenty of web development experience to understand the ASP.NET MVC side of the fence, but, I don't have a lot of CMS knowledge aside from getting one stood up. Right now my biggest question is around integrating security from ASP.NET with the CMS. I currently have an ASP.NET MVC site that handles the authentication for multiple production sites and creates an authentication cookie under our domain (*.example.com). The page acts like a single sign on page since the cookie is a wildcard and can be used in any other applications of the same domain. I'd really like to avoid having users put in their credentials twice. Is there a CMS that will play well with the ASP.NET Forms Authentication given how I have these existing applications structured? As an aside, right now I am leaning towards Drupal, but, that isn't finalized.

  I have a two hidden divs before my main site content, one with the login form and another with the signup form. I then have login and signup buttons within the page that use JQuery to show or hide these divs. I like the effect this setup offers, dropping down from the top of the page and pushing the rest of the content down. However, recently I have been getting serious about SEO and I am wondering if these divs have been affecting my SERP rankings. Basically, every non-logged page (everything bots see) has the same two display:none; divs at the top of the document flow. Is it bad?   Not long ago I started to use Ubuntu. When I was on Windows I used Notepad++. I was very surprised when I found that Notepad++ is only for Windows. So I installed Netbeans. Netbeans is a powerful IDE and in general I like it, except default styles. Maybe are there style profiles (i.e. plugins or other forms)?   Our company's main application is a desktop program that is used at warehouses and written in C# and Windows Presentation Forms. The next thing we want to be able to do is track when customers open up the application and when it is being used. The reason for this is so we can charge them per month, based on if they are/arn't using the application. My boss is having me research different ways to "license" the product under these requirements. Not having any experience doing this, a few things come to mind. I could create a web application that runs on a server, and every time the desktop application is opened and the user logs in, the application connects to the server and marks a database with the DateTime. Or is there licensing software that I can use to accomplish this? Just looking for tips/advice from people who have experience with this type of stuff.

  Development has modified the code in purchase orders and requisition forms to prevent error FRM-40654 when there are trailing spaces in the tables for most of the fields.  After applying the patch, the form will still display the error but a requery will allow you to save the transaction. For the scenarios not covered in the fix, the FND log will now display the specific field that causes the error.  This an example of the FND log for one document where the note_to_vendor has trailing spaces: Form note_to_vendor oldvalue Database  note_to_vendor newvalue Failed first if statement when comparing fields FRM-40654: Record has been updated. Requery block to see change.   I have a site done in Rails, which uses javascript to load files and generate forms for the user to input certain information. Those files and parameters are then to be used in a fortran code on the server. When the UI was on the server (using Qt), I would create a parameters file and execute the fortran code using threads so I wouldn't block the computer. Now that is web-based, I need to make the server and browser talk. What's the procedure for that? where should I start looking? I'm already using rails + javascript. I need that extra tool to do the talking, and no idea where to start.

  I'm writing my first application using the Play! framework and I was wondering if there was a tool that could extract the messages that need translation from my views and controllers for me ? It is rather cumbersome to fill the conf/messages(.xx) file while I'm developing my app, but I'm afraid that if I don't do it as I go, I will never be able to completely translate my application afterwards. Such tools exist with other framework such as CakePHP for instance, and I think that it shouldn't be hard to write one by myself, but if there already is one... I was also wondering, what should I name the keys of the messages in my application ? Using gettext, it's not bad practice to directly type in the message in english as the key, but is it with the system that Play! uses (MessageFormat, right ?) ? Wikipedia definition is as follows: Backporting is the action of taking a certain software modification (patch) and applying it to an older version of the software than it was initially created for. It forms part of the maintenance step in a software development process... For example: A problem is discovered and fixed in V2.0. The same fix is ported and applied to V1.5. What is the term when this is done in the opposite direction? The problem is discovered and fixed in V1.5. The same fix is ported and applied to V2.0. Would the term "Backporting" still apply? Or is there a term such as "Forwardporting" (which amusingly sounds a lot like "Port Forwarding")?

I have another busy site, but my test site runs off the live database which can be occasionally nerve wracking.
