  I just started learning some ruby, and I want to do something like this: print "Insert two numbers: " a, b = gets.split(" ") but I want to make a and b to be integers at the same time (in the same line).. If I add .to_i to the second line (before or after split(" ")), it doesn't work... so, how should I approach this? mapping, splitting, slicing? ok, I know I could use scanf, but other than scanf, how would I do this? sorry for such a noobish question, but I just couldn't find a good enough answer only googling...

  Hi all and thanks in advance. I'll start with some background. I live in an apartment which provides internet service included in the rent. They use company called pavlov for the internet http://pavlovmedia.net/ wireless seems to be working fine but wired connection is at least %30 faster. Ethernet, cat5 outlet is built in the wall, and there is only 1 outlet in each room. I would like to take this 1 outlet coming out the wall and multiply it into 4 wires, for desktop, playstation, tv and laptop without loosing any internet bandwidth. i have absolutely no idea weather this line is coming from a switch or a router but i have been researching Ethernet splitter, routers, switches, hubs and haven't found a solid answer. what is the best solution for me? thank you once again! • How can I use git to stage only one line in a file for commit, all from a script?

  I'm writing a simple pre-commit git hook that updates the year in copyright headers for files that are staged for commit. After modifying the line with the copyright, I would like the hook to stage that line so that it is part of the commit. It can't just git add the whole file, because there may be other pre-existing changes in there that shouldn't be staged. I don't see any options in the git add manual the let you stage specific lines. I figure I could git stash save --keep-index, apply my change, git add the file, and then git stash pop, but that seems rather crude. Any better approaches?

From a text file, I'm trying to store two strings from that file into arrays and then do the same with the next line (or until I desire, using a for loop) Using strings is important to me as it will make my future program a lot more flexible.

• What's the difference between starting a process from the dock vs. the command line on OS X

  I'm debugging an issue on OS X that only occurs when the application is started from the dock. It does not happen when the app is started from the command line. What is the difference between the two scenarios? The code I'm working with is a c++ based bundled plug-in being loaded in a third party app. I've attached to the process with GDB in both scenarios and the only difference I can see is that a couple of extra dylibs are loaded in the process when running from the command line and that the base address of my library is slightly different in the two scenarios. I've tried changing my linkage to i-prebind and/or -bind_at_load to no avail.

  I am now trying to use this Application Verifier debugging tool, but i am stuck, first of all: it breaks the program at a line that is simple variable set line (s = 1; for example) Secondly, now when i run this program under debugger, my program seems to have changed its behaviour: i am drawing image, and now one of the colors has changed o_O, all those parts of the image that i dont draw on, has changed the color to #CDCDCD when it should be #000000, and i already set the default color to zero, still it becomes to #CDCDCD. How do i make any sense to this?   I have some git repositories running on my server and I would like to give a friend read/write access to one. That's simple: I add him as a user, give him SSH access, and change the permissions to the repository folder. Everything works fine; I'm able to clone the git repository using Xcode and change things (ssh://www.example.com/repo.git). However, I do not want him to have command line access. If I recall correctly, Github does not give command line access to those who SSH in. I'm using Snow Leopard Server. Is this more of a server issue or a git issue? Do you have any idea where to begin? Setting the user's Login Shell to none (as opposed to /bin/bash) cuts off access to everything.

However, after my program ends, the user must hit enter to get back the standard command prompt ("c:\"). is there a way to avoid that need? Thanks. The SFTP command's exit status is always "0" regardless of whether the upload actually succeeded or not. I'm running the latest OSX 10.6.6 and the latest Zend Server CE for Mac. • Is it illegal to rewrite every line of an open source project in a slightly different way, and use it in a closed source project?

  There is some code which is GPL or LGPL that I am considering using for an iPhone project. If I took that code (JavaScript) and rewrote it in a different language for use on the iPhone would that be a legal issue? In theory the process that has happened is that I have gone through each line of the project, learnt what it is doing, and then reimplemented the ideas in a new language. To me it seems this is like learning how to implement something, but then reimplementing it separately from the original licence. Therefore you have only copied the algorithm, which arguably you could have learnt from somewhere else other than the original project. Does the licence cover the specific implementation or the algorithm as well? EDIT------ Really glad to see this topic create a good conversation. To give a bit more backing to the project, the code involved does some kind of audio analysis. I believe it is non-trivial to learn or implement, although I was prepared to embark on this task (I'm at the level where I can implement an FFT algorithm, and this was going to go beyond that.) It is a fairly low LOC script, so I didn't think it would be too hard to do a straight port. I really like the idea of rereleasing my port as well as using it in the application. I don't see any problem with that, and it would be a great way to give something back to the community. I was going to add a line about not wanting to discuss the moral issues, but I'm quite glad I didn't as it seems to have fired the debate a bit. I still feel a bit odd about using open source code to learn from. Does this mean that anything one learns from an open source project is not allowed to be used in a closed source project? Which doesn't really work for what I want to do. My main issue is the decoupling of the OnDataReceived method from the Wait for data method. which means I'm having issues building a string (I would use a string builder but I can accept multiple connections so that doesn't really work. Ideally I'd like to look while listening to a socket until I see and end of line character and then call a method with the resulting string as a parameter. What's the best way to go about doing this.

• Why wont this JS code work if its all on the same line?

  I'm writing HTML code for a java servlet. i first write the code in html/js so i can debug what im working on, and then ill make it a java string and put it in my servlet. My problem is that the code is working fine when i view it in ff from a local html file, but when i view it on my java servlet, it doesnt work because the js isnt getting called. what I did was format the html that my servlet generated so that its not all on a single line and ran the code again. This time it worked. I copied this working code into a browser address bar so that it will all be on a single line, and copied that code back into the script in my html file. Now, when the previously working code is on a single line, it doesnt work.
