• What do I do about a Java program that spawned two instaces of itself?

  I have a java JAR file that is triggered by a SQL server job. It's been running successfully for months. The process pulls in a structured flat file to a staging database then pushes that data into an XML file. However yesterday the process was triggered twice at the same time. I can tell from a log file that gets created, it looks like the process ran twice simultaneously. This caused a lot of issues and the XML file that it kicked out was malformed and contained duplicate nodes etc. My question is, is this a known issue with Java JVM's spawning multiple instances of itself? Or should I be looking at sql server as the culprit? I'm looking into 'socket locking' or file locking to prevent multiple instances in the future. This is the first instance of this issue that I've ever heard of. More info: The job is scheduled to run every minute. The job triggers a .bat file that contains the java.exe - jar filename.jar The java program runs, scans a directory for a file and then executes a loop to process if the file if it finds one. After it processes the file it runs another loop that kicks out XML messages. I can provide code samples if that would help. Thank you, Kevin

• What's the best way to generate an API reference document using a Rails routes.rb file?

  I am trying to document the API for my Rails application and I can't help but wonder if there is a better way to generate an XML file based on my routes.rb file. I'm envisioning something similar to the output of rake routes but in a more friendly, XML type format. Corey has some interesting ideas about using reflection/introspection on the routes file here but it's not quite what I need. If not, about how many fields would a struct need for a big enough advantage using ref this way?

MSDN just lists class-names and what I really want to see is which versions of MFC have nice modern functionality like dockable toobars, collapsible windows, and other graphical niceties.   An XML file is being posted to a url that my spring mvc is responding to. In .NET, I could do this: request.Form[0] request.Form["abc"] or request.QueryString[0] request.QueryString["some_key"] Now with spring/servlets it seems I can only do this: request.getParameter("some_key") or get all the names or values. When someone is posting a file to a url, using http post, won't this be just a single request parameter then? Can I get the parameter using index with servlets?

• What is the common way to program action listeners?

  I just started to learn how to use action listeners. To my understanding it works in the following way: There are some classes which contains "addActionListener" method by default (for example classes for buttons). Using this method we add an action listener to an object. For example: listenedObject.addActionListener(listeningObject). When an action with the "listenedObject" is performed, the "actionPerformed" method of the "listeningObject" will be called. So, it means that when we program a class for the listeningObject, we need to put there "actionPerformed" method. What is not clear to me, should we create a new class for every object that we want to listen. It does not seem to me as an elegant solution. On the other hand, if we have one action listener class for all (or at least many) object, than we have a problem since a instance of this class will not know which object is calling the "actionPerformed" method (and we need to know that since actions performed by the actionPerformed differs depending on who is called for this method). In my opinion, for every listened object we need to create are "personal" action listener and we can do it by setting a specific value to the corresponding field of the action listener. But I am not sure that it is a standard way to go? How do usually people do it?

  I'm writing a simple Greasemonkey script to strip out all the images, headings and paragraphs from a web page (it's because someone wants to use images of several popular websites with the images and text removed in a presentation about branding of websites). I've figured out how to do so with images by using a for loop and the document.images array like this: var i = 0; var imglngth = document.images.length; for(i=0;i<imglngth;i++) { document.images[i].style.display="none"; } However, I don't believe there's an object representing paragraphs or headers. • MySQL datetime fields and daylight savings time -- how do I reference the "extra" hour?

  I'm using the America/New York timezone. In the Fall we "fall back" an hour -- effectively "gaining" one hour at 2am. At the transition point the following happens: it's 01:59:00 -04:00 then 1 minute later it becomes: 01:00:00 -05:00 So if you simply say "1:30am" it's ambiguous as to whether or not you're referring to the first time 1:30 rolls around or the second. I'm trying to save scheduling data to a MySQL database and can't determine how to save the times properly. Here's the problem: "2009-11-01 00:30:00" is stored internally as 2009-11-01 00:30:00 -04:00 "2009-11-01 01:30:00" is stored internally as 2009-11-01 01:30:00 -05:00 This is fine and fairly expected. But how do I save anything to 01:30:00 -04:00? The documentation does not show any support for specifying the offset and, accordingly, when I've tried specifying the offset it's been duly ignored. The only solutions I've thought of involve setting the server to a timezone that doesn't use daylight savings time and doing the necessary transformations in my scripts (I'm using PHP for this). But that doesn't seem like it should be necessary. Many thanks for any suggestions.
