• How do I reject if exists? for non-nested attributes?

  Currently my controller lets a user submit muliple "links" at a time. It collects them into an array, creates them for that user, but catches any errors for the User to go back and fix. How can I ignore the creation of any links that already exist for that user? I know that I can use validates_uniqueness_of with a scope for that user, but I'd rather just ignore their creation completely. Here's my controller: @links = params[:links].values.collect{ |link| current_user.links.create(link) }.reject { |p| p.errors.empty? } Each link has a url, so I thought about checking if that link.url already exists for that user, but wasn't really sure how, or where, to do that. Should I tack this onto my controller somehow? Or should it be a new method in the model, like as in a before_validation Callback? (Note: these "links" are not nested, but they do belong_to :user.) So, I'd like to just be able to ignore the creation of these links if possible. Like if a user submits 5 links, but 2 of them already exist for him, then I'd just like for those 2 to be ignored, while the other 3 are created. How should I go about doing this?

Strange enough, I can work around this behaviour if I only partially specialize the inner class with simply adding a dummy template parameter. Makes things uglier and more complex, but it works. Note: I need this feature for recursive templates of the inner class for a set of the outer class. To make things even more complicate, in reality I only need a template function instead of the inner class. But partial specialization of functions is generally disallowed somewhere else in the standard ^^

  I'm having trouble with and RSpec view test. I'm using nested resources and the model with a belongs_to association. Not sure if that actually means anything.

• Refactoring code/consolidating functions (e.g. nested for-loop order)

  Just a little background: I'm making a program where a user inputs a skeleton text, two numbers (lower and upper limit), and a list of words. The outputs are a series of modifications on the skeleton text. Sample inputs: text = "Player # likes @." (replace # with inputted integers and @ with words in list) lower = 1 upper = 3 list = "apples, bananas, oranges" The user can choose to iterate over numbers first: Player 1 likes apples. Player 2 likes apples. Player 3 likes apples. Or words first: Player 1 likes apples. Player 1 likes bananas. Player 1 likes oranges. I chose to split these two methods of outputs by creating a different type of dictionary based on either number keys (integers inputted by the user) or word keys (from words in the inputted list) and then later iterating over the values in the dictionary. I'm not sure how this would be done. Is there anything related to functional programming or other paradigms that might help with this? The question is a little abstract and more stylistic/design-oriented than anything.

  When retrieving a hierarchical structure from MySQL (table with one ID column and one PARENT column signifying the hierarchical relationships), I map the result into an enumerated array as follows (for this example the numbers are arbitrary): Array ( [3] => Array ( [7] => Array () ), [7] => Array ( [8] => Array () ) ) Notice 3 is the parent of 7, and 7 is the parent of 8 (this could go on and on; and any parent could have multiple children). I wanted to shrink this array into a nested multidimensional array as follows: Array ( [3] => Array ( [7] => Array ( [8] => Array () ) ) ) That is, each NEW id is automatically assigned an empty array. Regardless, any ID's children will be pushed into their parent's array. Take a look at the following illustration for further clarification: This will probably result in a complicated recursive operation, since I always have to check whether a parent with any certain ID already exists (and if so, push the value into its array). Is there a built-in php function that can assist me with this? Do you have any idea as to how to go about constructing this? For what it's worth I'm using this to built a navigation bar in wordpress (which can contain categories, subcategories, posts... essentially anything).

  Hello, Imagine I have the following code (simplified regarding my real context of course): <div id="box" style="width: 120px;" onmouseover="this.style.width='200px'" onmouseout="this.style.width='120px'"> <div>A label</div> <div>Another label</div> <div>Another label, but a longer label</div> </div> What I want to achieve is the following: My div box has a fixed width (120px by default). In this configuration, every label nested in the box must be written in a single line. If the text is too long, then the overflow must be hidden. In my example, the third item will be displayed Another label, but a or Another label, but a .... When the cursor is entering the div box, the width of the box is modified (for example to 200px). In this configuration, the labels that were shorten in the first configuration are now displayed in the whole space. With my code snippet, the third label is displayed in two lines when the box has a 120px, and I do not want that... How can I achieve that? Note that I would be great if the solution works also for IE6! Even if I prefer a pure CSS/HTML solution, (simple) Javascript (and jQuery) is allowed!

• Modifying DIV CSS properties from within a deeply nested IFRAME.

  I'm working with a business intelligence tool that only gives me access to a deeply nested iframe to add code. Ideally I would like to use jQuery and/or plain old JavaScript to modify the left and position CSS of a div that is 3 iframes above my IFRAME. I have access to add JavaScript/HTML to divArea0_1 within the reportiframe IFRAME. I would like to modify the propdiv DIV contained within the JSTabbedPanel IFRAME. • How do I find the highest level TR that contains a specific ID nested in a table

  I have some HTML that looks like this (NOTE: I know this code isn't great but I didn't design it originally and some of it is auto generated): <table id="tab1"> <tr> <td><span>Some text</span></td> <td><span>more text</span></td> <td><input type="text" id="inp1" onclick="DoSomething(this);" /></td> </tr> <tr> <td><span>Some text</span></td> <td><span>more text</span></td> <td><table id="tab2"> <tr><td><input type="radio" id="inp2" onclick="DoSomething(this);" /><span>item</span></td></tr> </table></td> </tr> </table> All of that is embedded in a table which is also embedded in a table and so on. In the DoSomething(this) function I want to retrieve the TR underneath the table tab1. I'm having trouble figuring out the jquery necessary for this. Currently I'm doing something like this: function DoSomething(control) { var parentTab = '<%=tab1.ClientID %>'; var tr = $('#' + parentTab + ' > tbody > tr').has('#' + $(control).attr('id')).get(0); } This seems really messy but works. Is there a cleaner way to do this? If it helps the input inside the table will always be a radio button and a radio button will never appear outside of a sub table. Ideally I'd like to do this without having to know the id of tab1 but that seems impossible.

• User to be validated against nested security groups in Windows.

  Hi, This is my first post here and after much looking around I have come here with my question. Will really appreciate a fast response. I am faced with a problem to validate user credentials of the currently logged on user against a group in Windows. The user membership to a group can be through other groups also ie nested membership. Eg. User U is a part of group G1. Group G1 is a part of another group G2. The requirement is that when the user is validated against group G2, the validations should succeed. The user can be a local or AD user but the group will always be a local group ( or domain local group if created directly on a DC). I have tried using WindowsPrincipal.IsInRole() method, but it seems to be checking only for direct membership to a group. I also tried UserPrincipal.GetAuthorizationGroups() for the current user, but it also doesnt seem to be doing recursive search.   So, I don't know about you, but I was highly skeptical of the dynamic keywork when it was announced. I thought to myself, oh great, just another move towards VB compliance. Well after seeing it being used in things like DynamicXml (which I use for this example) I then was working with a MVC controller and wanted to move some things like operation timeout of an action to a configuration file. Thinking big picture, it'd be really nice to have configuration for all my controllers like that. Ugh, I don't want to have to create all those ConfigurationElement objects... So, I started thinking self, use what you know and do something cool ... Well after a bit of zoning out, self came up with use a dynamic object duh! Just remember, it only validates you did it right at runtime, which isn't that bad ... is it? And yes, I did make it case-insensitive so my code didn't have to look like my XML objects, tweak it to your liking if you dare to use this creation.

• Using NHibernate Criteria API to select sepcific set of data together with a count

  I have the following domain set up for persistence with NHibernate: I am using the PaperConfiguration as the root aggregate. I want to select all PaperConfiguration objects for a given Tier and AcademicYearConfiguration. This works really well as per the following example: ICriteria criteria = session.CreateCriteria<PaperConfiguration>() .Add(Restrictions.Eq("AcademicYearConfiguration", configuration)) .CreateCriteria("Paper") .CreateCriteria("Unit") .CreateCriteria("Tier") .Add(Restrictions.Eq("Id", tier.Id)) return criteria.List<PaperConfiguration>(); (Perhaps there is a better way of doing this though). Yet also need to know how many ReferenceMaterials there are for each PaperConfiguration and I would like to get it in the same call. Avoid HQL - I already have an HQL solution for it. I know this is what projections are for and this question suggests an idea but I can't get it to work.   Is anyone aware of an org-sort function / modification that can refile / organize a group of TODO so that it sorts them by three (3) criteria: first sort by due date, second sort by priority, and third sort by by title of the task? EDIT: I believe that org-sort by deadline (?d) has a bug that cannot properly handle undated tasks. I am working on a workaround (i.e., moving the undated todo to a different heading before the deadline (?d) sort occurs), but perhaps the best thing to do would be to try and fix the original sorting function. • Unable to ssh out anywhere - ssh_exchange_identification

  I have a setup where I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 as a VirtualBox guest under a Windows 7 host, behind a restrictive corporate firewall. I have set up NAT from the host port 22 to Ubuntu's port 22; IT inform me that they have opened port 22 outbound for the host machine's IP address. I have run ssh-keygen -t rsa, and am trying to test the setup by connecting to github and another known ssh server. In both cases the connect is refused with ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host. Full -vvv log is below. Is this possibly still due to the corporate firewall? If so, what else might I need to request from them? • Unable to transfer data to or from mounted hard drive

  So usually i'm good at sorting out issues. But this one has me at a loss! This issues has occured since upgrading my ubuntu so this was workingg prior. I use mounted hard drives to manage my downloads which are then copied over accordingly by a python based app. I found it was having issues with permissions to create anything on these mounted hard drives. I'm able to play and access he content of these drives so they're not faulty. My mount script looks like the following rw,user,exec,auto I really am stuck. Could anyone shed any light on how to fix this and allow me to access it. • Proliant server will not accept new hard disks in RAID 1+0?

  I have a HP ProLiant DL380 G5, I have two logical drives configured with RAID. I have one logical drive RAID 1+0 with two 72 gb 10k sas 1 port spare no 376597-001. I had one hard disk fail and ordered a replacement. The configuration utility showed error and would not rebuild the RAID. I presumed a hard disk fault and ordered a replacement again. In the mean time I put the original failed disk back in the server and this started rebuilding. Currently shows ok status however in the log I can see hardware errors. The new disk has come and I again have the same problem of not accepting the hard disk. I have updated the P400 controller with the latest firmware 7.24 , but still no luck. The only difference I can see is the original drive has firmware 0103 (same as the RAID drive) and the new one has HPD2. Any advice would be appreciated. • How to handle payment types with varying properties in the most elegant way.

  I'm using ASP.NET MVC 2. Keeping it simple, I have three payment types: credit card, e-check, or "bill me later". I want to: choose one payment type display some fields for one payment type in my view run some logic using those fields (specific to the type) display a confirmation view run some more logic using those fields (specific to the type) display a receipt view Each payment type has fields specific to the type... maybe 2 fields, maybe more. For now, I know how many and what fields, but more could be added. I believe the best thing for my views is to have a partial view per payment type to handle the different fields and let the controller decide which partial to render (if you have a better option, I'm open). My real problem comes from the logic that happens in the controller between views. Each payment type has a variable number of fields. I'd like to keep everything strongly typed, but it feels like some sort of dictionary is the only option. Add to that specific logic that runs depending on the payment type. In an effort to keep things strongly typed, I've created a class for each payment type. No interface or inherited type since the fields are different per payment type. Then, I've got a Submit() method for each payment type. Then, while the controller is deciding which partial view to display, it also assigns the target of the submit action. This is not elegant solution and feels very wrong. I'm reaching out for a hand. How would you do this?

  Is it possible for a class of exposing a type for function returns, without allowing users of that class to create variables of that type? A couple usage scenarios: A Fluent interface on a large class; a statement like "foo=bar.WithX(5).WithY(9).WithZ(19);" would be inefficient if it had to create three new instances of the class, but could be much more efficient if the WithX could create one instance, and the other statements could simply use it. A class may wish to support a statement like "foo[19].x = 9;" even when foo itself isn't an array, and does not hold the data in class instances that can be exposed to the public; one way to do that is to have foo[19] return a struct which holds a reference to 'foo' and the value '19', and has a member property 'x' which could call "foo.SetXValue(19, 9);" Such a struct could have a conversion operator to convert itself to the "apparent" type of foo[19]. In both of these scenarios, storing the value returned by a method or property into a variable and then using it more than once would cause strange behavior. It would be desirable if the designer of the class exposing such methods or properties could ensure that callers wouldn't be able to use them more than once. Is there any practical way to accomplish that?

• What are the hibernate annotations used to persist a value typed Map with an enumerated type as a ke

  I am having trouble getting the right hibernate annotations to use on a value typed Map with an enumerated class as a key. Here is a simplified (and extremely contrived) example. public class Thing { public String id; public Letter startLetter; public Map<Letter,Double> letterCounts = new HashMap<Letter, Double>(); } public enum Letter { A, B, C, D } Here are my current annotations on Thing @Entity public class Thing { @Id public String id; @Enumerated(EnumType.STRING) public Letter startLetter; @CollectionOfElements @JoinTable(name = "Thing_letterFrequencies", joinColumns = @JoinColumn(name = "thingId")) @MapKey(columns = @Column(name = "letter", nullable = false)) @Column(name = "count") public Map<Letter,Double> letterCounts = new HashMap<Letter, Double>(); } Hibernate generates the following DDL to create the tables for my MySql database create table Thing (id varchar(255) not null, startLetter varchar(255), primary key (id)) type=InnoDB; create table Thing_letterFrequencies (thingId varchar(255) not null, count double precision, letter tinyblob not null, primary key (thingId, letter)) type=InnoDB; Notice that hibernate tries to define letter (my map key) as a tinyblob, however it defines startLetter as a varchar(255) even though both are of the enumerated type Letter. When I try to create the tables I see the following error BLOB/TEXT column 'letter' used in key specification without a key length I googled this error and it appears that MySql has issues when you try to make a tinyblob column part of a primary key, which is what hibernate needs to do with the Thing_letterFrequencies table. So I would rather have letter mapped to a varchar(255) the way startLetter is. Unfortunately, I've been fussing with the MapKey annotation for a while now and haven't been able to make this work. I've also tried @MapKeyManyToMany(targetEntity=Product.class) without success. Can anyone tell me what are the correct annotations for my letterCounts map so that hibernate will treat the letterCounts map key the same way it does startLetter?

• How to bind data from a view of type List<List<MyViewModelClass>>?

  I have a strong type view of type List<List<MyViewModelClass>> The outer list will always have two lists of List<MyViewModelClass>. For each of the two outer lists I want to display a group of checkboxes. Each set can have an arbitrary number of choices. My view model class looks similar to this: public class MyViewModelClass { public Area Area { get; set; } public bool IsGeneric { get; set; } public string Code { get; set; } public bool IsChecked { get; set; } } So the final view will look something like: Please select those that apply: First set of choices: x Option 1 x Option 2 x Option 3 etc. Second set of choices: x Second Option 1 x Second Option 2 x Second Option 3 x Second Option 4 etc. Checkboxes should display MyViewModelClass.Area.Name, and their value should be related to MyViewModelClass.Area.Id. Checked state is of course related to MyViewModel.IsChecked. Question I wonder how should I use Html.CheckBox() or Html.CheckBoxFor() helper to display my checkboxes? I have to get these values back to the server on a postback of course. If it makes things simpler, I could make a separate view model type like: public class Options { public List<MyViewModelClass> General { get; set; } public List<MyViewModelClass> Others { get; set; } }
