  I am calling another shell script testarg.sh within my main script. the logfiles of testarg.sh are stored in $CUSTLOGS in the below format testarg.DDMONYY.PID.log example: testarg.09Jun10.21165.log In the main script after the testarg process gets completed i need to grep the log file for the text "ERROR" and "COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY". How do i get the PID of the process and combine with DDMONYY for grepping. • Complexity in using Binary search and Trie

  given a large list of alphabetically sorted words in a file,I need to write a program that, given a word x, determines if x is in the list. Preprocessing is ok since I will be calling this function many times over different inputs. priorties: 1. speed. 2. memory I already know I can use (n is number of words, m is average length of the words) 1. a trie, time is O(log(n)), space(best case) is O(log(n*m)), space(worst case) is O(n*m). 2. load the complete list into memory, then binary search, time is O(log(n)), space is O(n*m) I'm not sure about the complexity on tri, please correct me if they are wrong. Also are there other good approaches?

• Python text file processing speed issues

  Hi all, I'm having a problem with processing a largeish file in Python. All I'm doing is f = gzip.open(pathToLog, 'r') for line in f: counter = counter + 1 if (counter % 1000000 == 0): print counter f.close This takes around 10m25s just to open the file, read the lines and increment this counter. In perl, dealing with the same file and doing quite a bit more (some regular expression stuff), the whole process takes around 1m17s. • how to save state of dynamically created editTexts

  I'm stuck at how to save the state of my EditTexts on screen orientation. Currently if text is inputted into the EditTexts and the screen is orientated, the fields are wiped (as expected). I am already calling onSaveInstanceState and saving a String, but I have no clue on how to save the EditTexts which are created in code and then retrieve them and add them to the EditTexts when redrawing the activity. • How to find the number of inversions in an array ?

  This is an phone interview question: "Find the number of inversions in an array". I guess they mean O(N*log N) solution since O(N^2) is trivial. I guess it cannot be better than O(N*log N) since sorting is O(N*log N) I have checked a similar question from SO and can summarize the answers as follows: Calculate half the distance the elements should be moved to sort the array : copy the array and sort the copy. For each element of the original array a[i] find it's position j in the sorted copy (binary search) and sum abs(i - j)/2. Modify merge sort : modify merge to count inversions between two sorted arrays (it takes O(N)) and run merge sort with the modified merge. Does it make sense ? Are there other (maybe simpler) solution ? Isn't it too hard for a phone interview ?

• How to get new logs in an EventLogEntyCollection?

  I need to monitor security event logs on very busy domain controllers, which generates hundreds of them each minute. I know how to use EventLog, EventLogEntry and EvenLogEntryCollection to open and read a server's event log, but an EvenLogEntryCollection can contain ~300.000 events, and it wraps around continuously (and very fast), so I can't rely on its index to find new entries. So far, the only thing I was able to come up with is saving the timestamp of the last processed log entry and then iterate above the EventLogEntryCollection until I find an EventLogEntry which TimeGenerated properties is greater than the timestamp I saved; but it's terribly slow to iterate on ~300.000 entries to find the new ones. How can I quickly find the new entries in an big event log?

• Which parallel sorting algorithm has the best average case performance?

  Sorting takes O(n log n) in the serial case. If we have O(n) processors we would hope for a linear speedup. O(log n) parallel algorithms exist but they have a very high constant. They also aren't applicable on commodity hardware which doesn't have anywhere near O(n) processors. With p processors, reasonable algorithms should take O(n/p log n/p) time. In the serial case, quick sort has the best runtime complexity on average. A parallel quick sort algorithm is easy to implement (see here and here). However it doesn't perform well since the very first step is to partition the whole collection on a single core. I have found information on many parallel sort algorithms but so far I have not seen anything pointing to a clear winner. I'm looking to sort lists of 1 million to 100 million elements in a JVM language running on 8 to 32 cores.

  I have a high CPU problem with MYSQL using "top" ( linux ) shows cpu peaks of 90%. I was trying to find the source of the problem, turned on general log and slow query log, The slow query log did not find anything. The Db contains a few small tables and one large table that contains almost 100k rows, Database Engine is MyIsam. strange thing i have noticed that on the large table, select, insert are very fast but update takes 0.2 - 0.5 secs. already used optimize and repair and no improvement. the table is being updated frequently, could this be the source of the high CPU% ? What can i do to improve this?

The reason is that the shell subprocess spawns another processfor the java program, and the pid of that process is unknown to my python code. I've tried killing the process group with os.killpg, but that kills also the python process which runs this code in the first place. Setting shell to false, thus avoiding the java program to run inside a shell environment, is also out of the question, due to other reasons. Rerun the transaction. I am wondering whether such messages are stored in log files? I now need to implement some logging feature that will display log messages on the screen as well as log to a file.   I have an old Access application that has a lot of code in forms and reports. The database is getting too large and I am thinking of moving the back end to SQL Server. My requirements are as follows: The DB needs to be multiuser and the users (3-5) will need to log in over the web I would prefer not to re-write the forms and reports in ASP or some other web front end. When I think about my choices, I see them as: Have an Access ADP front end and allows remote log-in to the server where it is stored. Not sure if it is possible for 2 users to simultaneously log in Distribute an ADP front end to the users, but I am not sure if it is possible to connect to a SQL Server back end over the internet, and the network traffic may be an issue. The program fails at any trying to do something with Ogre::LogManager::getSingletonPtr() object with code User program stopped by signal (SIGSEGV) I checked that getSingletonPtr() returns address 0x000 But using code Utils::get_mutable_instance().getHandle().write("foo") works good in another part of program. What's wrong could be there with calling singletons?

  Hi, I'm planning to log my squid instances to a mongodb, but the actual problem is that we have a huge traffic to be logged, every access authenticated with user/pass. Eventually we have to make some reports based on logs. I was thinking to insert the logs distributed by months and by users, so my collection will look like this: {month: 'april', users: [{user: 'loop0', logs: [{timestamp: 12345678.9, url: 'http://stackoverflow.com/question/ask', ... }]}] So if I want to generate my reports based on the month of april I just have to get the right month instead of looking in zillions of lines to fetch the lines that timestamp match between April, 1 and April, 30. Of course this type of insert will be slower than just insert the log line directly. So my question is: is there a best way to do this? Nowadays we have around 12 million lines of log by day.
