• Sorting tasks to assign

  I've got a problem that I don't know where to start. I'd realy appreciate some help. The problem: I have several T task that must be done in D days by just 1 employee (let's forget using several resources right now). Each task can be done in some times (not all tasks can be done all time). e.g.: If my employee starts working at 8 o'clock and one task is "call a client". Maybe the client office opens at 9 o'clock. Also each task has a duration (really estimated). It is supposed that the D days are enough to do all task. I've to sort the tasks to the employee. e.g.: at monday 8:00 do task 7, then at 9:30 starts with task 2. In the example task 7 duration would be 1 and a half hour. Thanks for the help! Diego PD: If someone has a way to make this and it is not an algorithm never minds, please answer and I'll manage to think the algorithm. I just don't know how to face the problem. • Fast string suffix checking in C# (.NET 4.0)?

  What is the fastest method of checking string suffixes in C#? I need to check each string in a large list (anywhere from 5000 to 100000 items) for a particular term. The term is guaranteed never to be embedded within the string. In other words, if the string contains the term, it will be at the end of the string. The string is also guaranteed to be longer than the suffix. Cultural information is not important. These are how different methods performed against 100000 strings (half of them have the suffix): 1. Substring Comparison - 13.60ms 2. String.Contains - 22.33ms 3. CompareInfo.IsSuffix - 24.60ms 4. String.EndsWith - 29.08ms 5. String.LastIndexOf - 30.68ms These are average times. [Edit] Forgot to mention that the strings also get put into separate lists, but this is not important. It does add to the running time though. On my system substring comparison (extracting the end of the string using the String.Substring method and comparing it to the suffix term) is consistently the fastest when tested against 100000 strings. The problem with using substring comparison though is that Garbage Collection can slow it down considerably (more than the other methods) because String.Substring creates new strings. The effect is not as bad in .NET 4.0 as it was in 3.5 and below, but it is still noticeable. In my tests, String.Substring performed consistently slower on sets of 12000-13000 strings. • Correctly assigning value to a Core Data attribute with an integer data-type

  I'm missing something here, and feeling like an idiot about it. I'm using a UIPickerView in my app, and I need to assign the row number to a 32-bit integer attribute for a Core Data object. To do this, I am using this method: -(void)pickerView:(UIPickerView *)pickerView didSelectRow:(NSInteger)row inComponent:(NSInteger)component { object.integerValue = row; } This is giving me a warning: warning: passing argument 1 of 'setIntegerValue:' makes pointer from integer without a cast What am I mixing up here? --Edit 1-- Ok, so I can get rid of the warning by changing the method to do the following: NSNumber *number = [NSNumber numberWithInteger:row]; object.integerValue = rating; However, I still get a value of 0 for object.integerValue if I use NSLog to print it out. object.integerValue has a max value of 5, so I print out number instead, and then I'm getting a number above 62,000,000. Which doesn't seem right to me, since there are 5 rows. If I NSLog the row variable, I get a number between 0 and 5. So why do I end up with a completely different number after casting the number to NSNumber? --Edit 2-- Ok, so I'm realizing that there is some fundamental idea that I don't understand. I now understand that the 60 million + number can be cast back to the correct 0-5 number by using integerValue. So, it seems my question is how can I save an integer between 0-5 to the attribute if the NSNumber that is returned is over 60 million? Do I need to be using a different data type?

• Rails: Should partials be aware of instance variables?

I've been opting for b) as of late, but I did run into a little pickle: some_action.html.erb <% @dad.sons.each do |a_son| %> <%= render :partial => 'partial', :locals => { :son => a_son } %> <% end %> _partial.html.erb The son's name is <%= son.name %> The dad's name is <%= son.dad.name %> son.dad makes a database call to fetch the dad! So I would either have to access @dad, which would be going back to a) having partials access instance variables or I would have to pass @dad in locals, changing render :partial to <%= render :partial = 'partial', :locals = { :dad = @dad, :son = a_son } %, and for some reason passing a bunch of vars to my partial makes me feel uncomfortable. Maybe others feel this way as well. Hopefully that made some sense. Looking for some insight into this whole thing... Thanks!

  I am creating a form designer. It will generate PHP code which will produce an HTML form. Users will fill in fields and the PHP will store user input in a MySql database (and, of course, they can use the designer to generate forms which query the database). I am using Borland C++ Builder (very similar to Delphi & and you can get the same idea from VB, MSVC, Qt ... any IDE with a RAD GUI designer). Looking at the W3C page http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_forms.asp it seems that the components I can use for my form and retrieve data from are - edit box / TEdit / <input type="text" - memo / TMemo / <input type="textarea" - check box / TCheckBox / <input type="CheckBox" - Combo box / TComboBox / <select ... <option... - Radio group / TRadioGroup / <input type="radio" - Group box / TGroupBox / <fieldset ... <legend ... - Panel / TPanel / <fieldset ... I am unsure whether to allow button / TButton/ input type="button" - other than a single submit button which my form designer program automatically adds to the end of the generated form. But my real question is - did I miss any? It might be nice to have masked edit which only accepts numbers, or maybe some form of "spin control" (TUpDown, or slider + linked read only TEdit), so that the user can click & hold to increment/decrement an integer value. And a calendar component would be nice. Very important: I want to implement it all server-side in PHP, so no client-side JS or Ajax or the likes. If there anything else that I can add to make my generated forms look more impressive in the browser?

• iPhone - is it IMPOSSIBLE to grab the contents of a CALayers composition?

  I have a CALayer transformed in 3D on a offscreen UIView (much larger than 320x480). How do I dump what is seen on this UIView to a UIImage? NOTE: I Have edited the question to include this code... • Can I attach a VPN firewall to an existing network and have it manage VPN connections?

  I'm quite new to networking and am trying to set up my first VPN connection. The Situation: I have been contracted for some programming at a facility some distance from my location. I would like to be able to set up a simple VPN connection to their network so that I may make adjustments without significant travel. Their Current Network: Six devices (one I need to connect to) plugged into a basic router (Dlink). This router has an internet connection and a static ip address. My Hopeful (questionable) Proposal: I attach a VPN Firewall I happen to own (Netgear FVS318) as device number seven on the client network. I disable routing / DHCP in the Netgear. I forward the appropriate IPSec ports from the Dlink to the Netgear. I then create a VPN connection on my office Windows 7 machine to the remote network. The request is forwarded from the Dlink to the Netgear where the VPN connection is authenticated. I now have a remote-access connection from my office PC to the client's local network. The Question: Will this proposal work? If not, would another possibility be to attach a computer with a VPN server to the client network? Also, as a note: the client has requested I not replace their router or place mine in-between theirs and the internet :( Thanks very much!

• Qt, no such slot error

  I'm having a strange problem with slots in Qt4.6 I have a tree control that I am trying to fire an event back to the mainwindow to edit something. I have boiled it down to this minimal example: class MainWindow : public QMainWindow { Q_OBJECT public: MainWindow(int argc, char **argv ); private Q_SLOTS: void about() {QMessageBox::about(this, "about","about"); } // Just the defaul about box void doEditFace() {QMessageBox::about(this, "test","doEditFace"); } // pretty identical .... } class TreeModel : public QAbstractItemModel { Q_OBJECT Q_SIGNALS: void editFace(); ... } In my Mainwindow() I have connect(treeModel, SIGNAL(editFace()), this, SLOT(about())); // returns true connect(treeModel, SIGNAL(editFace()), this, SLOT(doEditFace())); // returns false When I run it the second line gives a warning. Object::connect: No such slot MainWindow::doEditFace() in \src\mainwindow.cpp:588 As far as I can see the doEditFace() is in the moc_ qmeta class perfectly correctly. And the edit event fires and pops up the about box. The order doesn't matterm if I connect the about box second it still works but my slot doesnt! vS2008 windowsXP qt4.6.2

  I have a model similar to the following (simplified): models.py class Sample(models.Model): name=models.CharField(max_length=200) class Action(models.Model): samples=models.ManyToManyField(Sample) title=models.CharField(max_length=200) description=models.TextField() Now, if Action.samples would have been a ForeignKey instead of a ManyToManyField, when I display Action as a TabularInline in Sample in the Django Admin, I would get a number of rows, each containing a nice form to edit or add another Action. However; when I display the above as an inline using the following: class ActionInline(admin.TabularInline): model=Action.samples.through I get a select box listing all available actions, and not a nifty form to create a new Action. My question is really: How do I display the ManyToMany relation as an inline with a form to input information as described? In principle it should be possible since, from the Sample's point of view, the situation is identical in both cases; Each Sample has a list of Actions regardless if the relation is a ForeignKey or a ManyToManyRelation. Also; Through the Sample admin page, I never want to choose from existing Actions, only create new or edit old ones.

• OleDb database to DataSet and back in c#?

  I'm writing a program that lets a user: Connect to an (arbitrary) View all of the tables in that database in separate DataGridViews Edit them in the program, generate random data, and see the results Choose to commit those changes or revert So I discovered the DataSet class, which looks like it's capable of holding everything that a database would, and I decided that the best thing to do here would be to load everything into one dataset, let the user edit it, and then save the dataset back to the database. The problem is that the only way I can find to load the database tables is this: set = new DataSet(); DataTable schema = connection.GetOleDbSchemaTable( OleDbSchemaGuid.Tables, new string[] { null, null, null, "TABLE" }); foreach (DataRow row in schema.Rows) { string tableName = row.Field<string>("TABLE_NAME"); DataTable dTable = new DataTable(); new OleDbDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM " + tableName, connection).Fill(dTable); dTable.TableName = tableName; set.Tables.Add(dTable); } while it seems like there should be a simpler way given that datasets appear to be designed for exactly this purpose. The real problem though is when I try saving these things. In order to use the OleDbDataAdapter.Update() method, I'm told that I have to provide valid INSERT queries. Doesn't that kind of negate the whole point of having a class to handle this stuff for me? Anyway, I'm hoping somebody can either explain how to load and save a database into a dataset or maybe give me a better idea of how to do what I'm trying to do. I could always parse the commands together myself, but that doesn't seem like the best solution.

• Returning ifstream in a function

  Here's probably a very noobish question for you: How (if at all possible) can I return an ifstream from a function? Basically, I need to obtain the filename of a database from the user, and if the database with that filename does not exist, then I need to create that file for the user. I know how to do that, but only by asking the user to restart the program after creating the file. • extracting SWF gives compiler errors in adobe flash CS4

  Hey, I have been given an SWF to edit a link in the AS code. The fact is the SWF uses some XML that is generated (actually retrieved) by PHP code from a database. menuXML.load("/sub/page/dynamic.php?genre=" + genre); so the point is we can use the same SWF 'mainfraim' and fill them with different animations/sources based on the link provided in dynamic.php?genre=### Now, I've used Flash Decompiler Gold to extract all files in the SWF and can open it again in Adobe Flash to edit it. When done I enter CTRL+ENTER and there are immediately 4 compiler errors!! Errors: 1x < Unexpected 'if' encountered 2x < Statement block must be terminated by '}' 1x < Ecpected a field name after '.' operator. How can these errors be present, when the original SWF works perfectly??! If I don't manage to solve this, I'll have to find out how to create an .php file the SWF tries to use which can select the proper resources (from a database I guess) to show them (using ?genre=###) Thanks!

• Why is this code invalid in C#?

  The following code will not compile: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? DBNull.Value : foo; I get: Error 1 Type of conditional expression cannot be determined because there is no implicit conversion between 'System.DBNull' and 'string' To fix this, I must do something like this: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? DBNull.Value : (Object)foo; This cast seems pointless as this is certainly legal: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? "gork" : foo; It seems to me that when the ternary branches are of different types, the compiler will not autobox the values to the type object...but when they are of the same type then the autoboxing is automatic. In my mind the first statement should be legal... Can anyone describe why the compiler does not allow this and why the designers of C# chose to do this? I believe this is legal in Java...Though I have not verified this. Thanks. EDIT: I am asking for an understanding of why Java and C# handle this differently, what is going on underneath the scenes in C# that make this invalid. I know how to use ternary, and am not looking for a "better way" to code the examples. I understand the rules of ternary in C#, but I want to know WHY... This is the same case with edit action too. Though the record is saved, the address doesn't show up on the edit form. Only the name of the Client model is shown. Actually, when I look at the log, the address model SQL is not queried even at all.

• Evaluation of environment variables in command run by Java's Runtime.exec()

  Hi, I have a scenarios where I have a Java "agent" that runs on a couple of platforms (specifically Windows, Solaris & AIX). I'd like to factor out the differences in filesystem structure by using environment variables in the command line I execute. As far as I can tell there is no way to get the Runtime.exec() method to resolve/evaluate any environment variables referenced in the command String (or array of Strings). I know that if push comes to shove I can write some code to pre-process the command String(s) and resolve enviroment variables by hand (using getEnv() etc). However I'm wondering if there is a smarter way to do this since I'm sure I'm not the only person wanting to do this and I'm sure there are pitfalls in "knocking up" my own implementation. Your guidance and suggestions are most welcome. edit: I would like to refer to environment variables in the command string using some consistent notation such as $VAR and/or %VAR%. Not fussed which. edit: To be clear I'd like to be able to execute a command such as: perl $SCRIPT_ROOT/somePerlScript.pl args on Windows and Unix hosts using Runtime.exec(). I specify the command in config file that describes a list of jobs to run and it has to be able to work cross platform, hence my thought that an environment variable would be useful to factor out the filesystem differences (/home/username/scripts vs C:\foo\scripts). I used this on my 32 bit box, and it worked first time. Stepping through it with the Visual Studio Macros IDE, it fails the first time on the DTE.ExecuteCommand("Edit.StopOutlining") line with a COM error (Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component). If I attempt to run it a second time, I can run it from the Macro Editor with no issue, but not from within Visual Studio with the macro explorer 'run macro' command. • HTTP Upload Problems

  We are running a marketplace on ColdFusion8 and IIS with a widely geographically distributed user base and have been receiving complaints of issues with some HTTP uploads. Most of the complaints are coming from geographically distant locations from our main datacenter on the US east coast. I've attempted to upload the same 70MB file from a US West coast test server to both our main site and a backup running the same code on a different network route and I saw the same issues fairly consistently in both places, so I've ruled out the code, route, and internal network errors. I've also tested uploads using both the native cf upload tag and a third party tool called SaFileUp. I saw the same issues with both upload tools, so I also don't think this is necessarily a ColdFusion problem. I don't have any problems uploading the test file from the East coast to other east coast servers, so I'm beginning to think that the distance between our users and our equipment is a factor. I've also found that smaller files are more likely to succeed than large ones (< 10MB) I tried the test upload with both IE and FF and did notice a difference in the way that the browsers seemed to handle packet errors. IE seemed to have a tough time continuing an upload after dropped / bad packets, whereas FF seemed to have the ability to gracefully resume an upload after experiencing packet problems. Has anyone experienced similar issues? Is there anything we can do on our side to make uploads more forgiving to packet loss or resumable after an error? A different upload tool etc… Do we need upload servers in more than one location to shorten the network routes between clients and servers? Does anyone think that switching uploads to SSL will help (no layer7 packet sniffing may lead to a smoother upload). Thanks.

If I have a list of Customers and the data for each Customer is contained in a Dictionary how can I bind the list to the DataGrid so that each string key is a column? Edit: N.B. • How much network latency is "typical" for east - west coast USA?

  At the moment we're trying to decide whether to move our datacenter from the west coast to the east coast. However, I am seeing some disturbing latency numbers from my west coast location to the east coast. Here's a sample result, retrieving a small .png logo file in Google Chrome and using the dev tools to see how long the request takes: West coast to east coast: 215 ms latency, 46 ms transfer time, 261 ms total West coast to west coast: 114 ms latency, 41 ms transfer time, 155 ms total It makes sense that Corvallis, OR is geographically closer to my location in Berkeley, CA so I expect the connection to be a bit faster.. but I'm seeing an increase in latency of +100ms when I perform the same test to the NYC server. That seems .. excessive to me. Particularly since the time spent transferring the actual data only increased 10%, yet the latency increased 100%! That feels... wrong... to me. I found a few links here that were helpful (through Google no less!) ... Does routing distance affect performance significantly? How does geography affect network latency? Latency in Internet connections from Europe to USA ... but nothing authoritative. So, is this normal? It doesn't feel normal. What is the "typical" latency I should expect when moving network packets from the east coast <--> west coast of the USA?

• Track "commands" send to WPF window by touchpad (Bamboo)

  Hi, I just bought a touchpad wich allows drawing and using multitouch. The api is not supported fully by windows 7, so I have to rely on the build in config dialog. The basic features are working, so if I draw something in my WPF tool, and use both fingers to do a right click, I can e.g. change the color. What I want to do now is assign other functions to special features in WPF. Does anybody know how to find out in what way the pad communicates with the app? It works e.g. in Firefox to scroll, like it should (shown on this photo). But I do not know how to hookup the scroll event, I tried a Scrollviewer (which ignores my scroll attempts) and I also hooked up an event with the keypressed, but it does not fire (I assume the pad does not "press a key" but somehow sends the "scroll" command direclty. How can I catch that command in WPF? Thanks a lot, Chris [EDIT] I got the scroll to work, but only up and down, not left and right. It was just a stupid "listbox in scrollviewer" mistake. But still not sure about commands like ZOOM in (which is working even in paint).. Which API contains such things? [EDIT2] Funny, the zoom works in Firefox, the horizontal scrolling does not. But, in paint, the horizontal scrolling works... • Long Gigabit Ethernet Run

  I am trying to get an Gig-E network between two buildings that are approximately 260 ft. away. While some TRENDnet switches failed to be able to connect to each other over Cat 6 at that distance, two Netgear 5-port Gig-E switches do so just fine. However, it still fails after I put in place APC PNET1GB ethernet surge protectors at each end before the line connects to the respective switches. So I find myself wondering if I simply need to find a better surge protector that doesn't degrade the signal as much (if so, what kind would you recommend?) or if I should give up on copper and use fiber between the buildings. If I opt to go the latter route, I could really use some pointers. It looks like LC connectors are the most common, but I keep running into some others as well. A media converter on each end seems like the simplest solution, but perhaps a Gig-E switch with an SFP port would make more sense? Given a very limited budget, sticking with my existing copper seems best, but if it is bound to be a headache, a 100 meter fiber cable is something I think I can swing cost wise.

  I'm trying to request a HTTP resource that requires basic authorization headers from within an Adobe AIR application. I've tried manually adding the headers to the request, as well as using the setRemoteCredentials() method to set them, to no avail. • WinForms Application Form "Shakes" When Audio Playing

  I have a C# game program that i'm developing. it uses sound samples and winsock. when i test run the game most of the audio works fine but from time to time if it is multiple samples being played sequentially the application form shakes a little bit and then goes back to its old position. how do i go about debugging this or present it to you folks in a manageable manner? i'm sure no one is going to want the whole app code in fear of virus attacks. please guide me.. EDIT: i have not been able to pin down any code section that produces this result. it just does and i cannot explain it.
