  • Classic assembly language texts not using x86?

    I'm looking for texts that give detailed treatment of assembly programming principles and don't use x86 as the target architecture. I haven't found any recent books like that, but I would expect that there were some good ones written in the 1970s and 1980s, when whole applications were still written in assembly. The architecture used should also be one of the cleaner designs, such as the 6502 or VAX.

    We all know that in C# we can't cast bool to int. I wanted to see what is the binary representation of true with bitmask, but I can't use (bool & int).. I think the problem is the architecture desicion "true is true, not any number != 0" (C++) and I was wondering what the benefits of such an architecture are? What is so bad with the C true/false concept?

  • are push notification tokens unique across all apps for a single device?

    i will have multiple applications on the app store and 1 urban airship account to send push notifications to all of these devices. what i want to know is if each apple device has the same "push token" across all applications? this is more of a database architecture thing so that I don't duplicate a push token many times if one single device uses many of my apps if each apple device generates a unique push token for each application it has installed my architecture needs to change.

  • Difference between Cloud and Virtualization

    Ops: This does not belong to ServerFault because it focuses on Programing Architecture. I have following questions regarding differences between Cloud and Virtualization.. How Cloud is different then Virtualization? Currently I tried to find out pricing of Rackspace, Amazone and all similar cloud providers, I found that our current 6 dedicated servers came cheaper then their pricing. So how one can claim cloud is cheaper? Is it cheaper only in comparison of normal hosting? We re organized our infrastructure in virtual environment to reduce or configuration overhead at time of failure, we did not have to rewrite any peice of code that is already written for earlier setup. So moving to virtualization does not require any re programming. But cloud is absoltely different and it will require entire reprogramming right? Is it really worth to recode when our current IT costs are 3-4 times lower then cloud hosting including raid backups and all sort of clustering for high availability? New programming architecture means new overheads of training staff, new methods of testing and new deployment schemes, does it justify over "on demand resource usage" words of cloud? We are having current development architecture with simple Server side ASP.NET WebServices with no local context and on client side Flex/Silverlight which offers pretty good REST architecture and its highly scalable. How does cloud differs from REST model of deployment? On storage, SQL Server or MySQL offers pretty good replication and high availibility then what is advantage in cloud? Data guarantee, one of our vendor hosting some other customer's app on cloud (one of most used), lost Entire Hard Disk (the virtual) and entire module in first 6 months. Second provider said its your duty to take backup, fine I agree, but no provider gives SLA for data guarantee, they give 99% uptime. However in most business apps, uptime is less important then data integrity. In our 10 years of dedicated hosting experience we had only one hard disk crash. This makes me little skeptical to go for cloud and loosing control over data. And I feel its just a big marketing buzz to sell virtulization in different form. Size of data, currently all providers charge very heavy for large data, if you are hosting only below 100GB cloud can be good alternative, but I think virtual servers and dedicated servers above 100GB to few TBs are still cheaper. Why would want to pay so high on cloud when there is no data guarentee as well as it doesnt say anything about redundancy. (I wish SO had something for spell check for Internet Explorer, sorry for wrong spellings in my post)

  • What binary architectures should be cross-compiled when building Mac OS X packages?

    Currently, Apple's native binaries and libraries are distributed as fat files, with support for both i386 and x86_64 architectures. The SDK (Xcode 4.4 w/ command line tools) doesn't support cross-compiling powerpc binaries any more, so they can be safely ignored I think, but there doesn't seem to be any specific guidelines or recommendations about which Intel architectures to support. So, when compiling code for distribution on OS X, do people still cross-compile for the i386 architecture? Or are x86_64 binaries the only architecture worth bothering with nowadays?

All the software seems to be there by default on Server 2012 and my hardware meets the reqs. Copy the installation media to the local drive and try to install from that (rather than a DVD). This produced the same error. Based on another error message, I installed .NET 4.0 (which apparently is not on Server 2012 out of the box). Same error. Install from command line. WebSphere MQ is currently not working due to the following issue: WebSphere MQ service runs under local user "MUSR_MQADMIN" in the local group "mqm" I attempt to use the service using my own account, BIZ\noahz MUSR_MQADMIN needs to check if BIZ\noahz is in local group "mqm" MUSR_MQADMIN does not have permission to read the Active Directory group membership of BIZ\noahz The following error appears in the MQ log file: ----- amqzfubn.c : 3582 ------------------------------------------------------- 1/31/2011 18:51:32 - Process(704.1105) User(MUSR_MQADMIN) Program(amqzlaa0.exe) AMQ8079: Access was denied when attempting to retrieve group membership information for user 'noahz@biz'. EXPLANATION: WebSphere MQ, running with the authority of user 'musr_mqadmin@noahz-biz', was unable to retrieve group membership information for the specified user. ACTION: Ensure Active Directory access permissions allow user 'musr_mqadmin@noahz-biz' to read group memberships for user 'noahz@biz'.     I restarted my slave to change configuration settings to skip reverse hostname lookup on connecting and to enable the slow query log. I edited /etc/my.cnf making only these changes, then restarted mysqld with /etc/init.d/mysql restart All appeared to be well but when I connect to msyqld remotely or locally though it connects okay a slight problem is that mysqld crashes whenever you try to issue any kind of statement.     I have a VPS running Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I'm able to connect using Remote Desktop from my home PC (Windows 7), personal laptop (Windows 7), and work laptop (Windows XP). However, I cannot connect from my work PC (Windows 7).     I have XAMPP installed. I am running Windows 7. I have WordPress installed so that I may tweak it and test things locally before putting them 'live' on a remote server. I just installed BuddyPress. The installation was rather seamless. I activated the plugin and almost immediately, Apache crashed. I have Apache running as a service so it immediately restarted itself and was running BUT if I even so much as refresh the page (or create any other request), down it goes.   • Alternatives to using email (in particular, Outlook) as a knowledge store?

    I suspect that, like many people, I use my work email account (accessed via Outlook 2007) to store information. I generally try to group similar things in folders and sub-folders, but with a multitude of folders this gets very unwieldy. In particular, it can be a bind to locate things using Outlook's tree structure. (As an aside: I've yet to come across a good free search add-on for Outlook.) I realise Outlook is not the best place to store all my information and I'd prefer not to. In an ideal world I'd like to be able to organise all of the information stored in Outlook in a MindMap (my software of choice being Freemind) or Wiki. To maintain an email audit-trail, I've considered saving individual emails as files using a MindMap or Wiki to link them. What do people think of this? (I can't say I relish the thought of the exporting process!) Whatever I do is going to involve some pain (i.e. setting up a Wiki/MindMap) or sticking with what Outlook provides currently. Has anyone been in the same position? Has anyone mass-migrated information from Outlook? If so, what was the best way? Any ideas or alternative proposals?

    I have a Team Foundation Server 2012 installation with Power Tools, and I defined a backup plan using the wizard found in the "Database Backup Tools" in the Team Foundation Server Administration Console. I set the backup plan to do a full database backup on Sunday mornings, to another server in the network. I followed the wizard with no problems and the Backup Plan was set successfully.   • Window 7 Host does not answer to ping

    Today I tried printing on a shared printer on one of our homegroup members. Sadly it did not work (printer marked as offline). Shortly after, I noticed I can't even ping the machine that owns the printer (I also can not remotely access it in any other way I've tried). Currently I'm trying to ping the machine from the router both computers are connected to (and my machine in question doesn't answer). I do receive the echo requests (as verified with WireShark). I also added a rule in the Windows Firewall to specifically allow ICMP echo requests, but that didn't change anything. I also tried netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable, but that didn't change anything either. Completely disabling the Windows Firewall has no effect on the issue either. One has to wonder, where does Windows log when and why it ignored any incoming packets? How can I get to the bottom of this? Here are some ways I found to dig deeper into the issue: Enabling logging on the Windows Firewall Enabling Windows Filtering Platform Auditing Both methods at least give more insight into the issue. The plain log file is full of entries like this: 2011-11-11 14:35:27 DROP ICMP 192.168.133.1 192.168.133.128 - - 84 - - - - 8 0 - RECEIVE So the ICMP packets are being dropped as if that was intended. The Event Viewer now gives a little bit more details: The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a packet.   • Explorer.exe keeps crashing during log in

    I have got a weird problem. My windows 7 has two user accounts (both are administrator). I can log in to one account and do all sort of work. But whenever I try to log in to other account, it shows a blank screen and a messagebox pops up with "windows explorer has stopped working". I can not run any program using runas command (from good profile) too. The task manager and runas programs all show same problem signature. I read the similar question and followed all the steps, but no luck. Later, I viewed the event log and found that, explorer.exe could not access a file. I checked the location but the file is there. The actual message is: Windows cannot access the file C:\Users\testuser\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches\{AFBF9F1A-8EE8-4C77-AF34-C647E37CA0D9}.1.ver0x0000000000000020.db for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Windows Explorer because of this error. The question is, how can I resolve this issue? Should I just delete the file or replace it with another one to stop explorer.exe from crashing? offtopic: What is the content of this file and why it is necessary?

  • NetBackup's bplist doesn't get user/group info for Windows files

    I'm trying to get information about storage consumption from NetBackup's bplist output. I'm running NBU 6.0MP5 on a RHEL 3 server. The server is backing up several Solaris, Linux, and Windows machines. When I use bplist to get information about files backed up on any UNIX machine I get something like this: # bplist -C unixclient -R 99 -l -s 01/28/2006 -e 01/29/2006 / drwxr-xr-x test ccase 0 Nov 16 09:28 /l/home2/test/ -rw------- test ccase 4737 Jan 06 17:54 /l/home2/test/.bash_history -rw-rw-r-- test ccase 104 Nov 11 2004 /l/home2/test/.bashrc However, when I use it to list files backed up on any Windows client I can't get the user and group information. They both always appear as 'root'.   • How can visiting a webpage infect your computer?

    My mother's computer recently became infected with some sort of rootkit. It began when she received an email from a close friend asking her to check out some sort of webpage. I never saw it, but my mother said it was just a blog of some sort, nothing interesting. A few days later, my mother signed in on the PayPal homepage. PayPal gave some sort of security notice which stated that to prevent fraud, they needed some additional personal information. Among some of the more normal information (name, address, etc.), they asked for her SSN and bank PIN! She refused to submit that information and complained to PayPal that they shouldn't ask for it. PayPal said they would never ask for such information and that it wasn't their webpage. There was no such "security notice" when she logged in from a different computer, only from hers. It wasn't a phishing attempt or redirection of some sort, IE clearly showed an SSL connection to https://www.paypal.com/ She remembered that strange email and asked her friend about it - the friend never sent it! Obviously, something on her computer was intercepting the PayPal homepage and that email was the only other strange thing to happen recently. She entrusted me to fix everything. I nuked the computer from orbit since it was the only way to be sure (i.e., reformatted her hard drive and did a clean install). That seemed to work fine. But that got me wondering... my mother didn't download and run anything. There were no weird ActiveX controls running (she's not computer illiterate and knows not to install them), and she only uses webmail (i.e., no Outlook vulnerability). When I think webpages, I think content presentation - JavaScript, HTML, and maybe some Flash. How could that possibly install and execute arbitrary software on your computer? It seems kinda weird/stupid that such vulnerabilities exist.
