  • Geolocation through Android's GPS Provider on a website?

    - by Corey Ogburn
    I'm trying to get the geolocation of the mobile device in a regular website, not a webview of an application or anything native like that. I'm getting a location, but it's highly inaccurate, the accuracy comes back as 3230 or some other outrageous number. I'm assuming that's in meters, either way it's not nearly accurate enough. By comparison, the same webpage on a laptop gets an accuracy of 30-40. My first thought was that it was using the Network Provider instead of the GPS Provider, telling me where I am based on tower location and reach. A little research later I found enableHighAccuracy and set it true in the options that I pass. After including that, I still notice no difference. Here's the test page's HTML/javascript: <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ecn.dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=7.0"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.3/jquery.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> function OnLoad() { $("#Status").text("Init"); if (navigator.geolocation) { $("#Status").text("Supports Geolocation"); navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(HandleLocation, LocationError, { enableHighAccuracy: true }); $("#Status").text("Sent position request..."); } else { $("#Status").text("Doesn't support geolocation"); } } function HandleLocation(position) { $("#Status").text("Received response:"); $("#Position").text("(" + position.coords.latitude + ", " + position.coords.longitude + ") accuracy: " + position.coords.accuracy); var loc = new Microsoft.Maps.Location(position.coords.latitude, position.coords.longitude); GetMap(loc); } function LocationError(error) { switch(error.code) { case error.PERMISSION_DENIED: alert("Location not provided"); break; case error.POSITION_UNAVAILABLE: alert("Current location not available"); break; case error.TIMEOUT: alert("Timeout"); break; default: alert("unknown error"); break; } } function GetMap(loc) { var map = new Microsoft.Maps.Map(document.getElementById("mapDiv"), {credentials: "Aj59meaCR1e7rNgkfQy7j08Pd3mzfP1r04hGesGmLe2a3ZwZ3iGecwPX2SNPWq5a", center: loc, mapTypeId: Microsoft.Maps.MapTypeId.road, zoom: 15}); } </script> </head> <body onload="javascript:OnLoad()"> <div id="Status"></div> <div id="Position"></div><br/> <div id='mapDiv' style="position:relative; width:600px; height:400px;"></div> </body> </html> I'm testing this on a rooted MyTouch 3G running Cyanogen 6.1 stable, Android 2.2 and GPS is enabled. In case rooting was a problem, I have also had various friends and coworkers try the webpage on their non-rooted 2.0+ Android devices. Each phone had various effects on the accuracy, but none were better than 1000, I attribute this to the different carriers. I have not (but eventually will) tested with iPhone or other location-aware cell phones.

    The following is the code I am using to take a screen shot using GLSurfaceView. But I dont know why the onDraw() method in the GLSurfaceView.Renderer Class is not being called. Please if some one can look at the code below and point out what am I doing wrong.`public class MainActivity extends Activity { private GLSurfaceView mGLView; int x,y,w,h; Display disp; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { super.onCreate(icicle); // ToDo add your GUI initialization code here setContentView(R.layout.main); x=0; y=0; disp = getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay(); w = disp.getWidth(); h = disp.getHeight(); mGLView = new ClearGLSurfaceView(this); } class ClearGLSurfaceView extends GLSurfaceView { public ClearGLSurfaceView(Context context) { super(context); setDebugFlags(DEBUG_CHECK_GL_ERROR | DEBUG_LOG_GL_CALLS); mRenderer = new ClearRenderer(); setRenderer(mRenderer); } ClearRenderer mRenderer; } class ClearRenderer implements GLSurfaceView.Renderer { public void onSurfaceCreated(GL10 gl, EGLConfig config) { // Do nothing special. } public void onSurfaceChanged(GL10 gl, int w, int h) { //gl.glViewport(0, 0, w, h); } public void onDrawFrame(GL10 gl) { //gl.glClear(GL10.GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT | GL10.GL_DEPTH_BUFFER_BIT); int b[]=new int[w*(y+h)]; int bt[]=new int[w*h]; IntBuffer ib=IntBuffer.wrap(b); ib.position(0); gl.glReadPixels(x, 0, w, y+h, GL10.GL_RGBA, GL10.GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, ib); for(int i=0, k=0; i<h; i++, k++) {//remember, that OpenGL bitmap is incompatible with Android bitmap //and so, some correction need. for(int j=0; j<w; j++) { int pix=b[i*w+j]; int pb=(pix>>16)&0xff; int pr=(pix<<16)&0x00ff0000; int pix1=(pix&0xff00ff00) | pr | pb; bt[(h-k-1)*w+j]=pix1; } } Bitmap bmp = Bitmap.createBitmap(bt, w, h,Bitmap.Config.ARGB_8888); try { File f = new File("/sdcard/testpicture.png"); f.createNewFile(); FileOutputStream fos=new FileOutputStream(f); bmp.compress(CompressFormat.PNG, 100, fos); try { fos.flush(); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } try { fos.close(); } catch (IOException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } } catch (FileNotFoundException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } catch(IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } ` Please someone help me out. I have just started learning to work on android.

  • Getting 404 in Android app while trying to get xml from localhost

    - by Patrick
    This must be something really stupid, trying to solve this issue for a couple of days now and it's really not working. I searched everywhere and there probably is someone with the same problem, but I can't seem to find it. I'm working on an Android app and this app pulls some xml from a website. Since this website is down a lot, I decided to save it and run it locally. Now what I did; - I downloaded the kWs app for hosting the downloaded xml file - I put the file in the right directory and could access it through the mobile browser, but not with my app (same code as I used with pulling it from some other website, not hosted by me, only difference was the URL obviously) So I tried to host it on my PC and access it with my app from there. Again the same results, the mobile browsers had no problem finding it, but the app kept saying 404 Not Found: "The requested URL /test.xml&parama=Someone&paramb= was not found on this server." Note: Don't mind the 2 parameters I am sending, I needed that to get the right stuff from the website that wasn't hosted by me. My code: public String getStuff(String name){ String URL = "http://10.0.0.8/test.xml"; ArrayList<NameValuePair> params = new ArrayList<NameValuePair>(2); params.add(new BasicNameValuePair("parama", name)); params.add(new BasicNameValuePair("paramb", "")); APIRequest request = new APIRequest(URL, params); try { RequestXML rxml = new RequestXML(); AsyncTask<APIRequest, Void, String> a = rxml.execute(request); ... } catch(Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } return null; } That should be working correctly. Now the RequestXML class part: class RequestXML extends AsyncTask<APIRequest, Void, String>{ @Override protected String doInBackground(APIRequest... uri) { HttpClient httpclient = new DefaultHttpClient(); String completeUrl = uri[0].url; // ... Add parameters to URL ... HttpGet request = null; try { request = new HttpGet(new URI(completeUrl)); } catch (URISyntaxException e1) { e1.printStackTrace(); } HttpResponse response; String responseString = ""; try { response = httpclient.execute(request); StatusLine statusLine = response.getStatusLine(); if(statusLine.getStatusCode() == HttpStatus.SC_OK){ // .. It crashes here, because statusLine.getStatusCode() returns a 404 instead of a 200. The xml is just plain xml, nothing special about it. I changed the contents of the .htaccess file into "ALLOW FROM ALL" (works, cause the browser on my mobile device can access it and shows the correct xml). I am running Android 4.0.4 and I am using the default browser AND chrome on my mobile device. I am using MoWeS to host the website on my PC. Any help would be appreciated and if you need to know anything before you can find an answer to this problem, I'll be more than happy to give you that info. Thank you for you time! Cheers.

  • Android - Resuming application state - SL4A

    - by toyotajon93
    please dont harpoon me for a noob-ish question. I am working on an android application using SL4A, when my application starts it runs in the background while the script is being executed. I'm not sure where to start but each time I click my icon, it re-starts my application. I have tried using different launchmodes with nothing different happening. I'm thinking it has to do with the OnCreate code, and the setting of the notification. I need help saving my application state and then resuming on either re-click of icon or click from notification bar. I've tried everything had to turn here for help. I am not a pro at android programming by any means. Thanks guys, be gentle ;) Public void onCreate() { super.onCreate(); mInterpreterConfiguration = ((BaseApplication) getApplication()) .getInterpreterConfiguration(); } @Override public void onStart(Intent intent, final int startId) { super.onStart(intent, startId); String fileName = Script.getFileName(this); Interpreter interpreter = mInterpreterConfiguration .getInterpreterForScript(fileName); if (interpreter == null || !interpreter.isInstalled()) { mLatch.countDown(); if (FeaturedInterpreters.isSupported(fileName)) { Intent i = new Intent(this, DialogActivity.class); i.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); i.putExtra(Constants.EXTRA_SCRIPT_PATH, fileName); startActivity(i); } else { Log .e(this, "Cannot find an interpreter for script " + fileName); } stopSelf(startId); return; } // Copies script to internal memory. fileName = InterpreterUtils.getInterpreterRoot(this).getAbsolutePath() + "/" + fileName; File script = new File(fileName); // TODO(raaar): Check size here! if (!script.exists()) { script = FileUtils.copyFromStream(fileName, getResources() .openRawResource(Script.ID)); } copyResourcesToLocal(); // Copy all resources if (Script.getFileExtension(this) .equals(HtmlInterpreter.HTML_EXTENSION)) { HtmlActivityTask htmlTask = ScriptLauncher.launchHtmlScript(script, this, intent, mInterpreterConfiguration); mFacadeManager = htmlTask.getRpcReceiverManager(); mLatch.countDown(); stopSelf(startId); } else { mProxy = new AndroidProxy(this, null, true); mProxy.startLocal(); mLatch.countDown(); ScriptLauncher.launchScript(script, mInterpreterConfiguration, mProxy, new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { mProxy.shutdown(); stopSelf(startId); } }); } } RpcReceiverManager getRpcReceiverManager() throws InterruptedException { mLatch.await(); if (mFacadeManager==null) { // Facade manage may not be available on startup. mFacadeManager = mProxy.getRpcReceiverManagerFactory() .getRpcReceiverManagers().get(0); } return mFacadeManager; } @Override protected Notification createNotification() { Notification notification = new Notification(R.drawable.script_logo_48, this.getString(R.string.loading), System.currentTimeMillis()); // This contentIntent is a noop. • External File Upload Optimizations for Windows Azure

    - by rgillen
    [Cross posted from here: http://rob.gillenfamily.net/post/External-File-Upload-Optimizations-for-Windows-Azure.aspx] I’m wrapping up a bit of the work we’ve been doing on data movement optimizations for cloud computing and the latest set of data yielded some interesting points I thought I’d share. The work done here is not really rocket science but may, in some ways, be slightly counter-intuitive and therefore seemed worthy of posting. Summary: for those who don’t like to read detailed posts or don’t have time, the synopsis is that if you are uploading data to Azure, block your data (even down to 1MB) and upload in parallel. Set your block size based on your source file size, but if you must choose a fixed value, use 1MB. Following the above will result in significant performance gains… upwards of 10x-24x and a reduction in overall file transfer time of upwards of 90% (eg, uploading a 1GB file averaged 46.37 minutes prior to optimizations and averaged 1.86 minutes afterwards). Detail: For those of you who want more detail, or think that the claims at the end of the preceding paragraph are over-reaching, what follows is information and code supporting these claims. As the title would indicate, these tests were run from our research facility pointing to the Azure cloud (specifically US North Central as it is physically closest to us) and do not represent intra-cloud results… we have performed intra-cloud tests and the overall results are similar in notion but the data rates are significantly different as well as the tipping points for the various block sizes… this will be detailed separately). We started by building a very simple console application that would loop through a directory and upload each file to Azure storage. This application used the shipping storage client library from the 1.1 version of the azure tools. The only real variation from the client library is that we added code to collect and record the duration (in ms) and size (in bytes) for each file transferred. The code is available here. We then created a directory that had a collection of files for the following sizes: 2KB, 32KB, 64KB, 128KB, 512KB, 1MB, 5MB, 10MB, 25MB, 50MB, 100MB, 250MB, 500MB, 750MB, and 1GB (50 files for each size listed). These files contained randomly-generated binary data and do not benefit from compression (a separate discussion topic). Our file generation tool is available here. The baseline was established by running the application described above against the directory containing all of the data files. This application uploads the files in a random order so as to avoid transferring all of the files of a given size sequentially and thereby spreading the affects of periodic Internet delays across the collection of results.  We then ran some scripts to split the resulting data and generate some reports. The raw data collected for our non-optimized tests is available via the links in the Related Resources section at the bottom of this post. For each file size, we calculated the average upload time (and standard deviation) and the average transfer rate (and standard deviation). As you likely are aware, transferring data across the Internet is susceptible to many transient delays which can cause anomalies in the resulting data. It is for this reason that we randomized the order of source file processing as well as executed the tests 50x for each file size. We expect that these steps will yield a sufficiently balanced set of results. Once the baseline was collected and analyzed, we updated the test harness application with some methods to split the source file into user-defined block sizes and then to upload those blocks in parallel (using the PutBlock() method of Azure storage). The parallelization was handled by simply relying on the Parallel Extensions to .NET to provide a Parallel.For loop (see linked source for specific implementation details in Program.cs, line 173 and following… less than 100 lines total). Once all of the blocks were uploaded, we called PutBlockList() to assemble/commit the file in Azure storage. For each block transferred, the MD5 was calculated and sent ensuring that the bits that arrived matched was was intended. The timer for the blocked/parallelized transfer method wraps the entire process (source file splitting, block transfer, MD5 validation, file committal). A diagram of the process is as follows: We then tested the affects of blocking & parallelizing the transfers by running the updated application against the same source set and did a parameter sweep on the block size including 256KB, 512KB, 1MB, 2MB, and 4MB (our assumption was that anything lower than 256KB wasn’t worth the trouble and 4MB is the maximum size of a block supported by Azure). The raw data for the parallel tests is available via the links in the Related Resources section at the bottom of this post. This data was processed and then compared against the single-threaded / non-optimized transfer numbers and the results were encouraging. The Excel version of the results is available here. Two semi-obvious points need to be made prior to reviewing the data. The first is that if the block size is larger than the source file size you will end up with a “negative optimization” due to the overhead of attempting to block and parallelize. The second is that as the files get smaller, the clock-time cost of blocking and parallelizing (overhead) is more apparent and can tend towards negative optimizations. For this reason (and is supported in the raw data provided in the linked worksheet) the charts and dialog below ignore source file sizes less than 1MB. (click chart for full size image) The chart above illustrates some interesting points about the results: When the block size is smaller than the source file, performance increases but as the block size approaches and then passes the source file size, you see decreasing benefit to the point of negative gains (see the values for the 1MB file size) For some of the moderately-sized source files, small blocks (256KB) are best As the size of the source file gets larger (see values for 50MB and up), the smallest block size is not the most efficient (presumably due, at least in part, to the increased number of blocks, increased number of individual transfer requests, and reassembly/committal costs). Once you pass the 250MB source file size, the difference in rate for 1MB to 4MB blocks is more-or-less constant The 1MB block size gives the best average improvement (~16x) but the optimal approach would be to vary the block size based on the size of the source file.    (click chart for full size image) The above is another view of the same data as the prior chart just with the axis changed (x-axis represents file size and plotted data shows improvement by block size). It again highlights the fact that the 1MB block size is probably the best overall size but highlights the benefits of some of the other block sizes at different source file sizes. This last chart shows the change in total duration of the file uploads based on different block sizes for the source file sizes. Nothing really new here other than this view of the data highlights the negative affects of poorly choosing a block size for smaller files.   Summary What we have found so far is that blocking your file uploads and uploading them in parallel results in significant performance improvements. Further, utilizing extension methods and the Task Parallel Library (.NET 4.0) make short work of altering the shipping client library to provide this functionality while minimizing the amount of change to existing applications that might be using the client library for other interactions.   Related Resources Source code for upload test application Source code for random file generator ODatas feed of raw data from non-optimized transfer tests Experiment Metadata Experiment Datasets 2KB Uploads 32KB Uploads 64KB Uploads 128KB Uploads 256KB Uploads 512KB Uploads 1MB Uploads 5MB Uploads 10MB Uploads 25MB Uploads 50MB Uploads 100MB Uploads 250MB Uploads 500MB Uploads 750MB Uploads 1GB Uploads Raw Data OData feeds of raw data from blocked/parallelized transfer tests Experiment Metadata Experiment Datasets Raw Data 256KB Blocks 512KB Blocks 1MB Blocks 2MB Blocks 4MB Blocks Excel worksheet showing summarizations and comparisons

  • Windows 8 Stuck on Start Screen File Search

    - by baturayd
    I have been searching someone else having the same issue but I couldn't find any. Here is my problem: I'm using Windows 8 Pro with Media Center. File search screen does not close itself after I make a file search within start screen. It stuck on that screen. I can't go back to desktop, therefore, task manager is inaccessible. Only way to get out of it is to sign out. It also looks like non-operational. It doesn't give me any result at all. It's just a blank screen with "Files" title. It used to work perfectly. Things I have done before coming here: Safe mode minimal boot to ensure no other 3rd party software interferes. sfc haven't found any inconsistencies. Search index has been rebuild. Normal boot with all 3rd party services and start-up items disabled. System restore to a date that I know this feature was functional. And by the way, I have installed all updates released so far. I strongly used file search via start menu back in Windows 7. This is an absolute game changer for me. I'm curious what causes this. I'll do a "system refresh" if I can't fix this. I'm working on it, I'll keep this thread updated should I find any fix. First update: I just discovered that file search screen gets stuck if it's invoked by typing query directly in start screen. It doesn't get stuck if it's invoked from win + x menu. I was able to "escape" from stuck screen with invoking it again by win + x menu. After rebuilding search index again, search suggestions started to appear again but still there is no file search functionality. Second update: "Results for" expression appears only for a second near to "Files" title when search is initialized. Third update: As a last resort, I finally tried to do a "System Refresh" which has also failed to refresh by giving an error after waiting almost 20 minutes at 99%. (Seriously?) After cold boot it began to undo changes. After changes were reverted, I boot the machine without doing anything further and bingo! Search began acting normal again. This is a totally weird solution. It obviously fixed certain system files during failed refresh, and kept those changes untouched because they were supposed to be that way at the first place. I'll keep this thread alive should anyone comes with a more logical explanation. Forth update: After a windows update, search functionality again stopped responding. It happened after a system update for the first time. Now I have a pretty good suspicion about system update, though I have no solid proof of its involvement with this problem.

  • embedding layout inside each tab? - (each tab has its own activity)

    - by Abhi
    I have started with the HelloTabwidget example and it works fine. Now what I am trying to do is have a layout inside each tab. here is what the code looks like myApp extends TabActivity { TabHost tabHost; onCreate() { setContentView (R.layout.main); tabHost = getTabHost(); TabHost.tabspec spec = tabHost.newTabSpec(..).setIndicator(...). setContent(new Intent().setClass(...)); tabHost.addTab(spec); : } } myTab1Actvity extends Activity { ListView myLV; EditText myET; onCreate() { setcontentView (TAB1_LAYOUT); myLV = findViewById(..); : myLV.setAdapter(aa); myET.setOnKeyListener(....) registerforContextMenu(myLV) } } when I run here is the stack trace ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): java.lang.NullPointerException ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.widget.TabHost.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(TabHost.java:295) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.widget.TabHost.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(TabHost.java:295) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1819) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4363) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) Does the code's flow look OK? basically each Tab has its own activity and each tab has its own layout. It appears that something is wrong in the TabHost - but I am unable to pinpoint it. Any suggestions/Qs you hav e will be very helpful.

  • Custom title with image

    - by Alex Volovoy
    Hi all, i'm creating custom title for activity by disabling standard one and managing everything myself. I wonder if it's possible to replace/theme standart title to my needs. I can customize size, background image, and text via themes by changing windowXYZStyle items. The only thing i couldn't find - how i can add image instead of text. I've tried requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE) and assign custom layout - but it doesn't seems to work. EDIT : Here is a report of testing suggestions, code is below - result - image view is not showing up. Activity public class SettingsActivity extends PreferenceActivity { @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE); getWindow().setFeatureInt(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE, R.layout.custom_title); super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); addPreferencesFromResource(R.xml.settings); } } XML : <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/title" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="26dip" android:paddingLeft="5dip" android:background="@drawable/titlebar_bg" android:layout_gravity="left|center" > <ImageView android:id="@+id/logo" android:src="@drawable/title_logo" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" /> </LinearLayout>

  • Stretch video to full screen in a SurfaceView extension

    - by SS
    I have created a widget that is an extension of SurfaceView (very similar to [VideoView][1]) and I am working on a feature to stretch the video fully across the device screen when certain action is taken. I've looked at onMeasure function of VideoView and re-wrote it this way: @Override protected void onMeasure(int widthMeasureSpec, int heightMeasureSpec) { if (mStretchVideo) { super.onMeasure(widthMeasureSpec, heightMeasureSpec); } else { int width = getDefaultSize(mVideoWidth, widthMeasureSpec); int height = getDefaultSize(mVideoHeight, heightMeasureSpec); if (mVideoWidth > 0 && mVideoHeight > 0) { if (mVideoWidth * height > width * mVideoHeight) { height = width * mVideoHeight / mVideoWidth; } else if (mVideoWidth * height < width * mVideoHeight) { width = height * mVideoWidth / mVideoHeight; } } setMeasuredDimension(width, height); } } This seems to work fine if I completely stop the video and start playing again. Now I am trying to force the refresh of this SurfaceView after setting the stretch flag so that the video gets stretched while it is playing, but I couldn't figure out how to force a refresh on SurfaceView. I tried android.view.View.invalidate(), android.view.View.refreshDrawableState() and calling android.view.View.measure(int, int) directly with different combinations but did not get any success. Any ideas?

  • Is there a limit for the number of files in a directory on an SD card?

    - by jamesh
    I have a project written for Android devices. It generates a large number of files, each day. These are all text files and images. The app uses a database to reference these files. The app is supposed to clear up these files after a little use (perhaps after a few days), but this process may or may not be working. This is not the subject of this question. Due to a historic accident, the organization of the files are somewhat naive: everything is in the same directory; a .hidden directory which contains a zero byte .nomedia file to prevent the MediaScanner indexing it. Today, I am seeing an error reported: java.io.IOException: Cannot create: /sdcard/.hidden/file-4200.html at java.io.File.createNewFile(File.java:1263) Regarding the sdcard, I see it has plenty of storage left, but counting $ cd /Volumes/NO_NAME/.hidden $ ls | wc -w 9058 Deleting a number of files seems to have allowed the file creation for today to proceed. Regrettably, I did not try touching a new file to try and reproduce the error on a commandline; I also deleted several hundred files rather than a handful. However, my question is: are there hard limits on filesize or number of files in a directory? am I even on the right track here? Nota Bene: The SD card is as-is - i.e. I haven't formatted it, so I would guess it would be a FAT-* format. The FAT-32 format has hard limits of filesize of 2GB (well above the filesizes I am dealing with) and a limit of number of files in the root directory. I am definitely not writing files in the root directory.

  • AudioRecord problems with non-HTC devices

    - by Marc
    I'm having troubles using AudioRecord. An example using some of the code derived from the splmeter project: private static final int FREQUENCY = 8000; private static final int CHANNEL = AudioFormat.CHANNEL_CONFIGURATION_MONO; private static final int ENCODING = AudioFormat.ENCODING_PCM_16BIT; private int BUFFSIZE = 50; private AudioRecord recordInstance = null; ... android.os.Process.setThreadPriority(android.os.Process.THREAD_PRIORITY_URGENT_AUDIO); recordInstance = new AudioRecord(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC, FREQUENCY, CHANNEL, ENCODING, 8000); recordInstance.startRecording(); short[] tempBuffer = new short[BUFFSIZE]; int retval = 0; while (this.isRunning) { for (int i = 0; i < BUFFSIZE - 1; i++) { tempBuffer[i] = 0; } retval = recordInstance.read(tempBuffer, 0, BUFFSIZE); ... // process the data } This works on the HTC Dream and the HTC Magic perfectly without any log warnings/errors, but causes problems on the emulators and Nexus One device. On the Nexus one, it simply never returns useful data. I cannot provide any other useful information as I'm having a remote friend do the testing. On the emulators (Android 1.5, 2.1 and 2.2), I get weird errors from the AudioFlinger and Buffer overflows with the AudioRecordThread. I also get a major slowdown in UI responsiveness (even though the recording takes place in a separate thread than the UI). Is there something apparent that I'm doing incorrectly? Do I have to do anything special for the Nexus One hardware?

  • Why is my searchable activity's Intent.getAction() null?

    - by originalbryan
    I've followed the SearchManager documentation yet am still having trouble making one of my app's activities searchable. From my activity, the SearchDialog appears, I enter a query, hit search, my activity reopens, then I see this in the log: D/SearchDialog( 584): launching Intent { act=android.intent.action.SEARCH flg=0x10000000 cmp=com.clinkybot.geodroid2/.views.Waypoints (has extras) } I/SearchDialog( 584): Starting (as ourselves) #Intent;action=android.intent.action.SEARCH;launchFlags=0x10000000;component=com.clinkybot.geodroid2/.views.Waypoints;S.user_query=sdaf;S.query=sdaf;end I/ActivityManager( 584): Starting activity: Intent { act=android.intent.action.SEARCH flg=0x10000000 cmp=com.clinkybot.geodroid2/.views.Waypoints (has extras) } D/WAYPOINTS( 1018): NI Intent { cmp=com.clinkybot.geodroid2/.views.Waypoints (has extras) } D/WAYPOINTS( 1018): NI null D/WAYPOINTS( 1018): NI false It appears to me that everything is fine up until the last three lines. The "NI" lines are getIntent().toString(), getIntent().getAction(), and getIntent().hasExtra(SearchManager.QUERY) respectively. ActivityManager appears to be starting my activity with the correct action. Then when my activity starts, it contains no action!? What am I doing wrong? The relevant portion of my manifest is: <activity android:name=".views.Waypoints" android:label="Waypoints" android:launchMode="singleTop"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.SEARCH" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" /> </intent-filter> <meta-data android:name="android.app.searchable" android:resource="@xml/searchable" /> </activity>

  • How do I start a service which is defined in a different package?

    - by Brad Hein
    I have two apps, one runs in namespace com.gtosoft.voyager and the other is com.gtosoft.dash. From com.gtosoft.dash I would like to start up the service which is defined in com.gtosoft.voyager... I think I need an intent, but what arg(s) would I pass to the intent before kicking it off with startService()? If they were in the same package I could just use Intent svc=new Intent (SettingsActivity.this,VoyagerService.class); startService(svc); Snippet of Manifest which defines the service <application android:icon="@drawable/voyagercarlogo" android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="false"> <provider android:name="com.gtosoft.voyager.VoyagerCProvider" android:authorities="com.gtosoft.voyager"/> <service android:name=".VoyagerService"/> <activity android:name=".SettingsActivity" android:label="Voyager" android:configChanges="keyboardHidden|orientation"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity>

  • ListView and wrap_content

    - by gaiapac
    I want to create an activity with a ListView on the left and a TextView on the right, side by side. I write the following xml, but the ListView occupies the entire page and it don't worry about the wrap_content. Why? How can I resolve it? <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools" android:layout_width="match_parent" android:layout_height="match_parent" android:orientation="horizontal" > <ListView android:id="@+id/lv" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="match_parent" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/tv" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="match_parent" /> </LinearLayout> EDIT: my onCreate @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); ListView lv = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.lv); String[] values = new String[] { "Test1", "Test2", "Test3", "Test4" }; ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this,R.layout.left, R.id.tv1, values); lv.setAdapter(adapter); }

  • FileInput Help/Advice

    - by user559142
    I have a fileinput class. It has a string parameter in the constructor to load the filename supplied. However it just exits if the file doesn't exist. I would like it to output a message if the file doesn't exist - but not sure how.... Here is the class: public class FileInput extends Input { /** * Construct <code>FileInput</code> object given a file name. */ public FileInput(final String fileName) { try { scanner = new Scanner(new FileInputStream(fileName)); } catch (FileNotFoundException e) { System.err.println("File " + fileName + " could not be found."); System.exit(1); } } /** * Construct <code>FileInput</code> object given a file name. */ public FileInput(final FileInputStream fileStream) { super(fileStream); } } And its implementation: private void loadFamilyTree() { out.print("Enter file name: "); String fileName = in.nextLine(); FileInput input = new FileInput(fileName); family.load(input); input.close(); }

  • How to limit EditText lines to 1 by coding (ignoring enter)?

    - by Vahe Musinyan
    I am trying to ignore the enter key, but i do not want to use onKeyDown() function. There is a way to do this in xml: 1. android:maxLines = "1" 2. android:lines = "1" 3. android:singleLine = "true" I actually want to do the last one by coding. Does anyone know how to do that? for (int i=0; i<numClass; i++) { temp_ll = new LinearLayout(this); temp_ll.setOrientation(LinearLayout.HORIZONTAL); temp1 = new EditText(this); InputFilter[] FilterArray = new InputFilter[1]; FilterArray[0] = new InputFilter.LengthFilter(12); temp1.setFilters(FilterArray); // set edit text length to max 12 temp1.setHint(" class name "); temp1.setSingleLine(true); temp_ll.addView(temp1); frame.addView(temp_ll); } ll.addView(frame);

  • Android Webview Anchor Link (Jump link) not working

    - by Joel
    Hi, I have a WebView in my Android App that is loading an HTML string using the loadDataWithBaseURL() method. The problem is that local anchor links (<a href="#link">...) are not working correctly. When the link is clicked, it becomes highlighted, but does not scroll to the corresponding anchor. This also does not work if I use the WebView's loadUrl() method to load a page that contains anchor links. However, if I load the same URL in the browser, the anchor links do work. Is there any special handling required to get these to work for a WebView? I am using API v4 (1.6).

  • Maintain cookie session in Android

    - by datguywhowanders
    Okay, I have an android application that has a form in it, two EditText, a spinner, and a login button. The user selects the service from the spinner, types in their user name and password, and clicks login. The data is sent via POST, a response is returned, it's handled, a new webview is launched, the html string generated form the response is loaded, and I have the home page of whatever service the user selected. That's all well and good. Now, when the user clicks on a link, the login info can't be found, and the page asks the user to login again. My login session is being dropped somewhere, and I'm not certain how to pass the info from the class that controls the main part of my app to the class that just launches the webview activity. The on click handler from the form login button: private class FormOnClickListener implements View.OnClickListener { public void onClick(View v) { String actionURL, user, pwd, user_field, pwd_field; actionURL = "thePageURL"; user_field = "username"; //this changes based on selections in a spinner pwd_field = "password"; //this changes based on selections in a spinner user = "theUserLogin"; pwd = "theUserPassword"; List<NameValuePair> myList = new ArrayList<NameValuePair>(); myList.add(new BasicNameValuePair(user_field, user)); myList.add(new BasicNameValuePair(pwd_field, pwd)); HttpParams params = new BasicHttpParams(); DefaultHttpClient client = new DefaultHttpClient(params); HttpPost post = new HttpPost(actionURL); HttpResponse response = null; BasicResponseHandler myHandler = new BasicResponseHandler(); String endResult = null; try { post.setEntity(new UrlEncodedFormEntity(myList)); } catch (UnsupportedEncodingException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } try { response = client.execute(post); } catch (ClientProtocolException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } try { endResult = myHandler.handleResponse(response); } catch (HttpResponseException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } List cookies = client.getCookieStore().getCookies(); if (!cookies.isEmpty()) { for (int i = 0; i < cookies.size(); i++) { cookie = cookies.get(i); } } Intent myWebViewIntent = new Intent(MsidePortal.this, MyWebView.class); myWebViewIntent.putExtra("htmlString", endResult); myWebViewIntent.putExtra("actionURL", actionURL); startActivity(myWebViewIntent); } } And here is the webview class that handles the response display: public class MyWebView extends android.app.Activity{ private class MyWebViewClient extends WebViewClient { @Override public boolean shouldOverrideUrlLoading(WebView view, String url) { view.loadUrl(url); return true; } } @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.web); MyWebViewClient myClient = new MyWebViewClient(); WebView webview = (WebView)findViewById(R.id.mainwebview); webview.getSettings().setBuiltInZoomControls(true); webview.getSettings().setJavaScriptEnabled(true); webview.setWebViewClient(myClient); Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras(); if(extras != null) { // Get endResult String htmlString = extras.getString("htmlString"); String actionURL = extras.getString("actionURL"); Cookie sessionCookie = MsidePortal.cookie; CookieSyncManager.createInstance(this); CookieManager cookieManager = CookieManager.getInstance(); if (sessionCookie != null) { cookieManager.removeSessionCookie(); String cookieString = sessionCookie.getName() + "=" + sessionCookie.getValue() + "; domain=" + sessionCookie.getDomain(); cookieManager.setCookie(actionURL, cookieString); CookieSyncManager.getInstance().sync(); } webview.loadDataWithBaseURL(actionURL, htmlString, "text/html", "utf-8", actionURL); } } } I've had mixed success implementing that cookie solution. It seems to work for one service I log into that I know keeps the cookies on the server (old, archaic, but it works and they don't want to change it.) The service I'm attempting now requires the user to keep cookies on their local machine, and it does not work with this setup. Any suggestions?

  • Decoding AAC using MediaCodec API on Android

    - by Benjamin Reed
    I'm trying to used the MediaCodec API on Android to decode an AAC stream. (It's raw AAC.) I tried using the MediaFormat.createAudioFormat() to create the format object to pass to MediaCodec.configure(), but I kept getting errors when using AAC (audio/mp4a-latm). (It works with MP3 (audio/mpeg) though...) Finally I created a MediaExtractor for an AAC file and looked at the format object it was producing. I saw that it included the key "csd-0" for a ByteBuffer composed of two bytes both with the value 0x12. If I include that key and value in the format object that I used to configure the AAC codec, everything works. Does anyone have an idea what is going on? The documentation states that I shouldn't configure that key. Does anyone have a pointer to MediaCodec examples to decode AAC files without using MediaExtractor to generate the format object?

  • Get content uri from file path in android

    - by frieza
    Hi, I know the absolute path of an image (say for eg, /sdcard/cats.jpg). Is there any way to the content uri for this file ? Actually in my code I download an image and save it at a particular location. In order to set the image in an ImageView currently I open the file using the path, get the bytes and create a bitmap and then set the bitmap in the ImageView. This is a very slow process, instead if I could get the content uri then I could very easily use the method ImageView.setImageUri(uri) Thanks

  • WebView and Cookies on Android

    - by dave smith
    I have an application on appspot that works fine through regular browser, however when used through Android WebView, it cannot set and read cookies. I am not trying to get cookies "outside" this web application BTW, once the URL is visited by WebView, all processing, ids, etc. can stay there, all I need is session management inside that application. First screen also loads fine, so I know WebView + server interactivity is not broken. I looked at WebSettings class, there was no call like setEnableCookies. I load url like this: public class MyActivity extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); WebView webview = new WebView(this); setContentView(webview); webview.loadUrl([MY URL]); } .. } Any ideas?

  • Android ListView: get data index of visible item

    - by Mayra
    I have an Android ListView created with a SimpleAdapter that has more items in it than fit in the screen. After the list has been scrolled, I need to get the position in the data model of the first visible item in the list. Basically I want a function like: listView.getChildAt(0).getPositionInDataModel(). Adapter has a few functions in it, like getItemId(position) that looked useful; however, the SimpleAdapter implementation just returns the passed in position, not a row id like I'd hoped. A brute force solution would be to get the View at index 0, and compare it to the view for each item in the adapter. However, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get the view for a particular position from the adapter. Anyone have any thoughts?
