• Are there any nasty side affects if i lock the HttpContext.Current.Cache.Insert method

  Apart from blocking other threads reading from the cache what other problems should I be thinking about when locking the cache insert method for a public facing website. The actual data retrieval and insert into the cache should take no more than 1 second, which we can live with. More importantly i don't want multiple thread potentially all hitting the Insert method at the same time.   I'm running a unit test using the Django framework and get this error. Running the actual code does not have this problem, running the unit tests creates a test database on the fly so I suspect the issue lies there. But while i clone the object this exception forces me to load all the EntitySet< references with the Customer object, which might be too much and slow down the application speed. Any suggestions?

  I'm new to Scala and Lift, coming from a slightly odd background in PLT Scheme. I've done a quick search on this topic and found lots of questions but no answers. I'm probably looking in the wrong place. I've been working my way through tutorials on using Mapper to create database-backed objects, and I've hit a stumbling block: what types should be used to stored optional attribute values. For example, a simple ToDo object might comprise a title and an optional deadline (e.g. http://rememberthemilk.com). The former would be a MappedString, but the latter could not be a MappedDateTime since the type constraints on the field require, say, defaultValue to return a Date (rather than a Date or null/false/???). Is an underlying NULL handled by the MappedField subclasses? Or are there optional equivalents to things like MappedInt, MappedString, MappedDateTime that allow the value to be NULL in the database? Or am I approaching this in the wrong way?

  Hey guys, I'm currently thinking about caching most of my viewdata excpt user specific data after a user logs on. I thought the simplest way was caching the ViewData object itself and adding the user specific data after it was loaded. Are there any downsides of this approach? • Strange error with CreateCompatibleDC

The bitmap hBmp is loaded fine and hdc has a valid value. But the call to CreateCompatibleDC() returns a NULL pointer. Then, GetLastError() returns 0 ! Anybody can guess what's going on here , please ? PS : There are no memory allocations or GDI routines called before this one...so I think memory leaks should be ruled out.

  I have a GUI program that allows a user a scan a network, the issue is that when the pcap_loop function is called, my GUI program becomes unresponsive.(the pcap_loop blocks the current thread). • Trouble getting height of OverlayItem Drawable

  Hey- I'm having some trouble getting a hold of the drawable a certain OverlayItem is using so I can calculate the height of it and properly offset the note that shows onTap. Here is my code to try to get that drawable: Drawable marker = item.getMarker(android.R.attr.state_focused); if (marker != null) int markerHeight = marker.getIntrinsicHeight(); marker ends up null. I'm using a drawable XML file with a selector for the different states of the OverlayItem's drawable. In it I'm specifying a drawable for the null state, state_focused, and state_pressed. • How do I get property injection working in Ninject for a ValidationAttribute in MVC?

  I have a validation attribute set up where I need to hit the database to accomplish the validation. I tried setting up property injection the same way I do elsewhere in the project but it's not working. • C++ Memory Allocation & Linked List Implementation

  I'm writing software to simulate the "first-fit" memory allocation schema. Basically, I allocate a large X megabyte chunk of memory and subdivide it into blocks when chunks are requested according to the schema. I'm using a linked list called "node" as a header for each block of memory (so that we can find the next block without tediously looping through every address value. head_ptr = (char*) malloc(total_size + sizeof(node)); if(head_ptr == NULL) return -1; // Malloc Error .. :-( node* head_node = new node; // Build block header head_node->next = NULL; head_node->previous = NULL; // Header points to next block (which doesn't exist yet) memset(head_ptr,head_node, sizeof(node)); ` But this last line returns: error: invalid conversion from 'node*' to 'int' I understand why this is invalid.. but how can I place my node into the pointer location of my newly allocated memory?

• getting the Contact's Birthday of a HTC Sense phone

  I am not sure, but probably HTC Sense does the following, syncs my Facebook contacts to my phone along with their mobile number and their birthday. This shows well in the agenda and the user panel. But as it turns out it doesn't use the standard SDK way to store the birthdays. • Netbeans Java SE GUI Builder: private initComponents() problem

  When I build a GUI for my Java SE app with Netbeans GUI builder, it puts all the codes in the initComponents() method which is private. I could not change it to public. So, all the components are accessible only to the class containing the UI. I want to access those components from another class so that I can write custom event handlers and everything. Most importantly I want to separate my GUI code and non-GUI from each other. I can copy paste the GUI code and later make them public by hand to achieve what I want. But thats a pain. I have to handcraft a portion whenever I need to re-design the UI. What I tried to do: I used the variable identifier to make the text box public. Now how can I access the text box from the Main class? I think I need the component generated in a public method as well. I am new to Java. Any helps? • Where in memory are stored nullable types?

  This is maybe a follow up to question about nullable types. Where exactly are nullable value types (int?...) stored in memory? First I thought it's clear enough, as Nullable<T> is struct and those are value types. Then I found Jon Skeet's article "Memory in .NET", which says: Note that a value type variable can never have a value of null - it wouldn't make any sense, as null is a reference type concept, meaning "the value of this reference type variable isn't a reference to any object at all". I am little bit confused after reading this statement. So let's say I have int? a = null;. As int is normally a value type, is it stored somehow inside struct Nullable<T> in stack (I used "normally" because I don't know what happens with value type when it becomes nullable)? Or anything else happens here - perhaps in heap?

  I'm not sure if I understand this code or if I'm using it right, but I was under the impression that in an ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX website I could run javascript like: var c = Sys.CultureInfo.CurrentCulture and it would give me the culture/language settings the user had specified in their browser at the time of the visit. However, for me, it always comes back 'en-US' no matter what language I pick in firefox or IE. This serverside code however: string[] languages = HttpContext.Current.Request.UserLanguages; if (languages == null || languages.Length == 0) return null; try { string language = languages[0].ToLowerInvariant().Trim(); return CultureInfo.CreateSpecificCulture(language); } catch (ArgumentException) { return null; } does return the language I have currently set. But I need to do this clientside, because I need to parse a string into a datetime and do some validations before I postback, and the string could be a MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY, or some other such thing. What am I missing?
