• Improving ANTLR DSL parse-error messages

  I'm working on a domain-specific language (DSL) for non-programmers. Non-programmers make a lot of grammar mistakes: they misspell keywords, they don't close parentheses, they don't terminate blocks, etc. I'm using ANTLR to generate my parser; it provides a nifty mechanism for handling RecognitionExceptions to improve error handling. But I'm finding it pretty hard to develop good error-handling code for my DSL. At this point, I'm considering ways to simplify the language to make it easier for me to provide users with high-quality error messages, but I'm not really sure how to go about this. I think I want to reduce the ambiguity of errors somehow, but I'm not sure how to implement that idea in a grammar. In what ways can I simplify my language to improve parse-error messages for my users? EDIT: Updated to clarify that I'm interested in ways to simplify my language, not just ANTLR error-handling tips in general. (Though, thanks for those!)

• Spring AOP Pointcut syntax for AND, OR and NOT

  I'm having trouble with a pointcut definition in Spring (version 2.5.6). I'm trying to intercept all method calls to a class, except for a given method (someMethod in the example below). <aop:config> <aop:advisor pointcut="execution(* x.y.z.ClassName.*(..)) AND NOT execution(* x.y.x.ClassName.someMethod(..))" /> </aop:config> However, the interceptor is invoked for someMethod as well. Then I tried this: <aop:config> <aop:advisor pointcut="execution(* x.y.z.ClassName.(* AND NOT someMethod)(..)) )" /> </aop:config> But this does not compile as it is not valid syntax (I get a BeanCreationException). Can anybody give any tips?

• Copying the bitmap contents of a UIView's context to that of another UIView

  Basically what I want to do is copy the already rendered content (a PDF drawn into the UIView's graphics context using CGContextDrawPDFPage()) onto a similar UIView, without having to re render the PDF. The idea is, that I'd then be able to perform an animated transform on the UIView and later re render the PDF with more accuracy. For both UIViews I'm using a larger-than-screen CATiledLayer to make it easier to rerender the PDF once the user zooms in, if that makes any difference. Any tips? I'm kind of lost here.

  Hello all, I am developing a C# application in VS 2010 that is to be deployed via ClickOnce. However when I try to deploy the application on a client machine I get the following error: Unable to install or run the application. The application requires the assembly Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.9.0 Version 9.0.0.0 to be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first. I have tried to include the missing assembly into the application files under Project Properties-Publish tab, but the error remains the same. Next I tried to add Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.9.0 to the project's references, but I cannot find it in the reference list. Does anyone have any tips or solutions to this problem.   Hey MVC experts. I two database entities that i need to represent and i need to output them in a single page. I have something like this Views Def ViewA ViewB Test ViewC I want to ViewC to display ViewA, which displays ViewB. • Initiating UserControl via MVVM in WPF / focus issue.

  Hi there I have a few usercontrols loaded into a tabcontrol via MVVM in WPF. Within the XAML for the usercontrol I am setting focus to a textbox using the FocusManager, however this appears to only work when the first instance of the usercontrol is created. Just to test I added a loaded event handler to the usercontrol - this is only called on the first instance. I'm using data templates for the user controls as follows: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type local:UserTypeViewModel}"> <local:UserTypeView /> </DataTemplate> The textbox is focused as follows: FocusManager.FocusedElement="{Binding ElementName=txtName}" Additionally I'm using a global event handler (for the textbox GotFocus event) which selects all the text using a dispatcher. If anyone has any tips on how to achieve focus with every usercontrol I'd be very grateful. Thanks, Ben.

• Conversion of bytes into a type without changing the application (ie storing the conversion method i

  Is there a way to store a conversion strategy (for converting some bytes) into a database and then execute it on the run time. If one were to store a complete java file, you would need to compile it, store the class and some how inject into the already running system. I am not sure how this would be possible. But using some kind of dynamic language on JVM would be nice. I see an example of execution of groovy from within spring context here http://www.devx.com/tips/Tip/42789 but this is still static in nature as application context contains the reference to the implementation and cannot be changed by database. Perhaps with JavaConfig of context it is possible. I am exploring options now, specifically with Spring 3.0. Your suggestions in any direction would be welcome.

• iphone - Programmatically set (System-wide) proxy settings?

  I am new to iPhone development, so I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. I am developing an application whose purpose will be to route all iPhone activity through my company's proxy. Is there a way to programmatically set system-wide proxy settings in the iPhone (which will also take effect on the 3G connection)? I know there is a way to manually set proxy settings for each wifi connection. Detecting new networks and setting the proxy on them would be acceptable. However, I need to also be able to set the proxy on the 3G connection. Also, bonus: Is there a way to programmatically change the "Restrictions" settings? If anyone has any tips or can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Thanks. EDIT: Please understand that this is for a legitimate purpose. Apple has to approve app store additions, so it's not like I'm trying to spread a virus. Please, constructive answers only.

• Render SSRS .RDL to PDF and just open it.

  I tried to be the most descriptive I could. Ok, so since I've never done anything like this before, I guess it's better to ask before starting at all to just don't get the whole process wrong. We have a report that has to be called from an ASP.NET application, it could be a simple button. Through the code-behind, I gotta pass in a paramater, render the report, and don't save it anywhere, just open it to the user, as a .pdf file so he could save or print it. So please, give me links or tips, I'm reading MSDN documentation right now... If you have any suggestion on other technologies, as for the report, I'd like to hear it, but it has to be called from ASP.NET. Thanks in advance!

• Grep Crystal Reports (with Sub-reports)

  I need a way to quickly search a large number of Crystal reports (with sub-reports) for the names of several stored procedures. (Trying to find dependencies.) I'm running Windows XP and downloaded this grep program - http://www.wingrep.com/download.htm. So far, I'm not convinced that it's working.   I'm generally pretty new at web stuff. I wanted to build a blog from scratch to get some practice. Few questions: Do most people add new entries of a blog by directly editing the html or is there a more dynamic way of doing this that is used more frequently? I'm assuming you can store the entries in some type of database and then display them via javascript or something similar? What are the most frequently used tools for what I'm describing? • How do I turn off accelerometer input for my flipside view

  I have an iPhone 3.1.3 app which has only 2 methods of input in its main view. It has an info button to switch to a flipside view, and the only other input it takes in the main view is accelerometer movement. I want to switch off the accelerometer input when in the flipside view but haven't been able to find out how. I have the main view controller set as an accelerometer delegate, but did not do the same for the flipside view controller, though I suspect that it inherited it from the main view controller. I am really new to xcode and objective c, I have been reading these forums and a couple of developer books, but if anyone has any tips on other good places to look, please let me know.

  I'm trying to make sure old url's aren't broken after the site's URL structure has changed from this: http://www.domain.com/section/entry_name to this: http://www.domain.com/section/event_name/entry_name But to make it a bit more complex, I'm using the segments to sort entries, for example: http://www.domain.com/news/amazing_event/date/asc http://www.domain.com/videos/my_event/title/desc The new structure only effects one particular event (amazing_event) and should leave the other URL's alone. Where do I even begin to tackle this? • jQuery UI " $("#datepicker").datepicker is not a function"

  When i use DatePicker, jQuery's UI plugin, in an existing .aspx page i get errors that "$("#datepicker").datepicker is not a function". However, when I copy and paste the same code that creates and uses the DatePicker to an html file that's also in the same directory as the aspx page, it works flawlessly. This leads me to assume that there are some JS files in the aspx page that's preventing the DatePicker or maybe jQuery's UI JS files to load properly. Can anyone confirm my beliefs or provide any tips on finding the culprit that's interfering with jQuery's UI plugins?

• How to Set Timeout for Ruby ODBC Driver for SQL Server?

  Hello, I would like to know how to explicitly set a timeout for the Ruby DBI ODBC driver, when connecting to SQL Server. I would like long running queries to simply timeout and cancel themselves, saving further server resources and Rails processes. This was happening while we were using the ADO based Ruby driver, but now that we've switched to DBD::ODBC we are no longer experiencing timeouts. I've looked around but cannot find out how to set the query timeout value. I've tried explicitly setting some values in the driver, and specifying both Timeout and ConnectionTimeout and Connect Timeout in the DSN configuration for the connection. No luck. Your tips and advice are very appreciated. Thanks! Seth

• How do I change the frame position for a custom MKAnnotationView?

  I am trying to make a custom annotation view by subclassing MKAnnotationView and overriding the drawRect method. I want the view to be drawn offset from the annotation's position, somewhat like MKPinAnnotationView does it, so that the point of the pin is at the specified coordinates, rather than the middle of the pin. So I set the frame position and size as shown below. However, it doesn't look like I can affect the position of the frame at all, only the size. The image ends up being drawn centered over the annotation position. Any tips on how to achieve what I want?   Hello, Let's say I have a pdf form file available at website which is filled by the users and submitted to the server. On the server side (Asp.Net) I would like to merge the data that I receive in xml format with the empty pdf form that was filled and save it. As I have found there are several possible ways of doing it: Using pdf form created by adobe acrobat and filling it with itextsharp. Using pdf form created by adobe acrobat and filling it with FDF Toolkit .net (which seems to be using itextsharp internally) Usd pdfkt to fill the form. Use pdf form file created with adobe livecycle and merge the data by using Form Data Integration Service As I have no experience with this kind of task can you advise which option would be better/easier and give some additional tips? • GameKit and GKPeerPicker on 1st Gen iPhone and iPod Touch

  This is my current set up for my multiplayer game: A view that gives connection tips and warns the user that multiplayer will not work on the 1st Gen iPhone or ipod Touch. There is a "connect" button that pushes the game view and starts the GKPeerPicker. Unfortunately, I don't have a 1st Gen iPhone or iPod Touch to test what happens if they press the connect button. The view will be pushed, but I don't know what will happen when the PeerPicker tries to show. So the Question(s): Is there anyway to tell if the user will not be able to use GameKit so that I can disable the "connect" button? What will happen if they do press the connect button and GameKit is not available?

• Can I use a MIME type declaration to get an HTML file to open in MS Word?

  With ViEmu you really need to unbind a lot of resharpers keybindings to make it work well. Does anyone have what they think is a good set of keybindings that work well for resharper when using ViEmu? What I'm doing at the moment using the Visual Studio bindings from Resharper. Toasting all the conflicting ones with ViEmu, and then just driving the rest through the menu modifiers ( Alt-R keyboard shortcut for the menu item ). I also do the same with Visual Assist shortcuts ( for C++ ) if anyones got any tips and tricks for ViEmu / Resharper or Visual Assist working together well I'd most apprciate it!

• Hashing words to numbers with respect to definition

  As part of a larger project, I need to read in text and represent each word as a number. For example, if the program reads in "Every good boy deserves fruit", then I would get a table that converts 'every' to '1742', 'good' to '977513', etc. Now, obviously I can just use a hashing algorithm to get these numbers. However, it would be more useful if words with similar meanings had numerical values close to each other, so that 'good' becomes '6827' and 'great' becomes '6835', etc. As another option, instead of a simple integer representing each number, it would be even better to have a vector made up of multiple numbers, eg (lexical_category, tense, classification, specific_word) where lexical_category is noun/verb/adjective/etc, tense is future/past/present, classification defines a wide set of general topics and specific_word is much the same as described in the previous paragraph. Does any such an algorithm exist? If not, can you give me any tips on how to get started on developing one myself? I code in C++.
