  • Getting a Database into Source Control

    - by Grant Fritchey
For any number of reasons, from simple auditing, to change tracking, to automated deployment, to integration with application development processes, you’re going to want to place your database into source control. Using Red Gate SQL Source Control this process is extremely simple. SQL Source Control works within your SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) interface.  This means you can work with your databases in any way that you’re used to working with them. If you prefer scripts to using the GUI, not a problem. If you prefer using the GUI to having to learn T-SQL, again, that’s fine. After installing SQL Source Control, this is what you’ll see when you open SSMS:   SQL Source Control is now a direct piece of the SSMS environment. The key point initially is that I currently don’t have a database selected. You can even see that in the SQL Source Control window where it shows, in red, “No database selected – select a database in Object Explorer.” If I expand my Databases list in the Object Explorer, you’ll be able to immediately see which databases have been integrated with source control and which have not. There are visible differences between the databases as you can see here:   To add a database to source control, I first have to select it. For this example, I’m going to add the AdventureWorks2012 database to an instance of the SVN source control software (I’m using uberSVN). When I click on the AdventureWorks2012 database, the SQL Source Control screen changes:   I’m going to need to click on the “Link database to source control” text which will open up a window for connecting this database to the source control system of my choice.  You can pick from the default source control systems on the left, or define one of your own. I also have to provide the connection string for the location within the source control system where I’ll be storing my database code. I set these up in advance. You’ll need two. One for the main set of scripts and one for special scripts called Migrations that deal with different kinds of changes between versions of the code. Migrations help you solve problems like having to create or modify data in columns as part of a structural change. I’ll talk more about them another day. Finally, I have to determine if this is an isolated environment that I’m going to be the only one use, a dedicated database. Or, if I’m sharing the database in a shared environment with other developers, a shared database.  The main difference is, under a dedicated database, I will need to regularly get any changes that other developers have made from source control and integrate it into my database. While, under a shared database, all changes for all developers are made at the same time, which means you could commit other peoples work without proper testing. It all depends on the type of environment you work within. But, when it’s all set, it will look like this: SQL Source Control will compare the results between the empty folders in source control and the database, AdventureWorks2012. You’ll get a report showing exactly the list of differences and you can choose which ones will get checked into source control. Each of the database objects is scripted individually. You’ll be able to modify them later in the same way. Here’s the list of differences for my new database:   You can select/deselect all the objects or each object individually. You also get a report showing the differences between what’s in the database and what’s in source control. If there was already a database in source control, you’d only see changes to database objects rather than every single object. You can see that the database objects can be sorted by name, by type, or other choices. I’m going to add a comment such as “Initial creation of database in source control.” And then click on the Commit button which will put all the objects in my database into the source control system. That’s all it takes to get the objects into source control initially. Now is when things can get fun with breaking changes to code, automated deployments, unit testing and all the rest.

  • cPickle ImportError: No module named multiarray

    - by Rafal
Hello, I'm using cPickle to save my Database into file. The code looks like that: def Save_DataBase(): import cPickle from scipy import * from numpy import * a=Results.VersionName #filename='D:/results/'+a[a.find('/')+1:-a.find('/')-2]+Results.AssType[:3]+str(random.randint(0,100))+Results.Distribution+".lft" filename='D:/results/pppp.lft' plik=open(filename,'w') DataOutput=[[[DataBase.Arrays.Nodes,DataBase.Arrays.Links,DataBase.Arrays.Turns,DataBase.Arrays.Connectors,DataBase.Arrays.Zones], [DataBase.Nodes.Data,DataBase.Links.Data,DataBase.Turns.Data,DataBase.OrigConnectors.Data,DataBase.DestConnectors.Data,DataBase.Zones.Data], [DataBase.Nodes.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.Links.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.Turns.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.OrigConnectors.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.DestConnectors.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.Zones.DictionaryPy2Vis], [DataBase.Nodes.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.Links.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.Turns.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.OrigConnectors.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.DestConnectors.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.Zones.DictionaryVis2Py], [DataBase.Paths.List]],[Results.VersionName,Results.noZones,Results.noNodes,Results.noLinks,Results.noTurns,Results.noTrips, Results.Times.VersionLoad,Results.Times.GetData,Results.Times.GetCoords,Results.Times.CrossTheTime,Results.Times.Plot_Cylinder, Results.AssType,Results.AssParam,Results.tStart,Results.tEnd,Results.Distribution,Results.tVector]] cPickle.dump(DataOutput, plik, protocol=0) plik.close()` And it works fine. Most of my Database rows are lists of a lists, vecor-like, or array-like data sets. But now when I input data, an error occurs: def Load_DataBase(): import cPickle from scipy import * from numpy import * filename='D:/results/pppp.lft' plik= open(filename, 'rb') """ first cPickle load approach """ A= cPickle.load(plik) """ fail """ """ Another approach - data format exact as in Output step above , also fails""" [[[DataBase.Arrays.Nodes,DataBase.Arrays.Links,DataBase.Arrays.Turns,DataBase.Arrays.Connectors,DataBase.Arrays.Zones], [DataBase.Nodes.Data,DataBase.Links.Data,DataBase.Turns.Data,DataBase.OrigConnectors.Data,DataBase.DestConnectors.Data,DataBase.Zones.Data], [DataBase.Nodes.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.Links.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.Turns.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.OrigConnectors.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.DestConnectors.DictionaryPy2Vis,DataBase.Zones.DictionaryPy2Vis], [DataBase.Nodes.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.Links.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.Turns.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.OrigConnectors.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.DestConnectors.DictionaryVis2Py,DataBase.Zones.DictionaryVis2Py], [DataBase.Paths.List]],[Results.VersionName,Results.noZones,Results.noNodes,Results.noLinks,Results.noTurns,Results.noTrips, Results.Times.VersionLoad,Results.Times.GetData,Results.Times.GetCoords,Results.Times.CrossTheTime,Results.Times.Plot_Cylinder, Results.AssType,Results.AssParam,Results.tStart,Results.tEnd,Results.Distribution,Results.tVector]]= cPickle.load(plik)` Error is (in both cases): A= cPickle.load(plik) ImportError: No module named multiarray Any Ideas? • What's the most efficient way to reclaim disk space after deleting lots of data from a database on Sybase ASE 15?

    - by Ernie Longmire
As I understand it, based on some research but zero real-world experience with Sybase ASE, the only way to reclaim disk space once it's been allocated to a database is to export that database, create a new DB with the same schema, and reload all the exported data to the new database. Is this correct, or is there some other method? Then: assuming the above is correct and a full export-recreate-reload is required, what's the most efficient way to do that? Are there tools that will automate all or part of that process? I'm being told we would have to write separate bcp export and import commands for each and every object in the database, which if true sounds easily scriptable by someone who knows Sybase ASE well enough. (I don't.) This seems to me like a really basic housekeeping task, and it feels like I'm missing something obvious.

  • Is RAC One Node Certified for E-Business Suite?

    - by Steven Chan
Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) is a cluster database with a shared cache architecture that supports the transparent deployment of a single database across a pool of servers.  RAC is certified with both Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.  We publish best-practices documentation for specific combinations of EBS + RAC versions.  For example, if you were planning on implementing RAC for EBS 12, you would use this documentation:Using Oracle 11g Release 2 Real Application Clusters with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (Note 823587.1)Many of the largest E-Business Suite users in the world run RAC today, including Oracle; see this Oracle R12 case study for details.A number of customers have recently asked whether RAC One Node can be used with the E-Business Suite.  From the RAC website:Oracle RAC One Node is a new option available with Oracle Database 11g Release 2. Oracle RAC One Node is a single instance of an Oracle RAC-enabled database running on one node in a cluster.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise database has unexpected 4GB database size limit

    - by Jesse
I have SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise installed on a local Windows 7 x64 workstation. When I create a database on the server, it unexpectedly has a 4GB size limit (Database properties in SQL Server Management Studio say size = 3934.38 MB, space available = 47.13 MB). Unfortunately the database needs more than 4GB, and Enterprise is not supposed to have a practical maximum size. I confirmed the database is on the Enterprise server: SELECT @@VERSIONMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (X64) Apr 2 2010 15:48:46 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) The database file is not set to restrict growth in SQL Server Management Studio, and there is plenty of hard drive space. The database was copied from SQL Express (which has a 4GB limit), but the same occurs with a fresh database creation. I've spent a couple of hours trying to figure this out and Google-searching, to no avail. Any ideas?

  • database api commands

    - by Rahul Mehta
As I am developing database api for a project. I am developing commands for getting data from database. e.g. i have one gib table so command for that is getgib name alias limit fields if user pass the name e.g. getgib rahul than it will return all the gib data whose name is like rahul. if alias is given than it will return the all the gib owned by the user whose alias(userid) given . So i want to design the commands. limit : is to limit the record in query, fields : is the extra fields i want to add in the select query . so as now commands are set but now Question 1 : i want the gibs by the gibid , so how to make this or any suggestion to improve my command is welcome. Question 2 : if user don't want to specify the name , and he want only the gibs by providing alias then at this what separator at the place of name i should used.

  • Connecting to embedded FireBird database from C# app issue

    - by be here now
Hi, guys. I seem to have an issue with connecting to an embedded FireBird database from a sample C# app. Here's what I've got. static void Main(string[] args) { //Some constant parameters used to form up the connection string... #region constant literals const String User = "SYSDBA"; const String Password = "masterkey"; const String DBPath = "D:\\!tmp\\1\\cafw.fdb"; const String DLLPath = @"fbembed.dll"; const String Charset = "WIN1251"; const int Dialect = 3; #endregion //I check whether we actually have a database file nearby //and fbembed.dll. If we don't - we leave if (File.Exists(DBPath) == true && File.Exists(DLLPath) == true) { //I form up a connection string out of literals I've declared above FbConnectionStringBuilder CStr = new FbConnectionStringBuilder(); CStr.ServerType = FbServerType.Embedded; CStr.UserID = User; CStr.Password = Password; CStr.Dialect = Dialect; CStr.Database = DBPath; CStr.Charset = Charset; CStr.ClientLibrary = DLLPath; //And then I finally try to connect FbConnection Conn = new FbConnection(CStr.ToString()); try { //See what we've got in the end Console.WriteLine(CStr.ToString()); //And try to connect Conn.Open(); } catch (Exception Ex) { //Show me what has gone wrong Console.WriteLine("\n" + Ex.Message.ToString()); Console.ReadKey(); } finally { Conn.Close(); } } } The problem is, it yields me a server type=Embedded;user id=SYSDBA;password=masterkey;dialect=3;initial catalog=D:!tmp\1 \cafw.fdb;character set=WIN1251;client library=fbembed.dll No message for error code 335544972 found. Invalid ESCAPE sequence as an output. I've googled around to find out about 335544972 error code, and it seems to be something about invalid connection string, but I haven't found any "official" info about that. Hase anybody encountered anything similar so one could tell me what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

  • Multi database link and mix and match email alert

    - by menardmam
I have a site which is a large database of people that have different knowledge in different domains, such as teaching (maths, french, science etc...) On the site there is a page where you can search people base on different request, such as distance from home, grade, sex. Now, I would like to add a page where people that are looking for mentor will fill a request, and when a tutor in his area of search will match request, a email will be send to this researcher. Because I know for sure, that when in January you look for a math teacher for your 10 year old son, and you find none, you won't go again in February, March... and on and on just to see. Maybe there is one now, you want to be informed when the tutor will get into database automatically (more or less like www.jobboom.com) So the question is, what CMS do I need to be able to do that ? Wordpress, drupal or something custom made?

  • How In-Memory Database Objects Affect Database Design: The Conceptual Model

    - by drsql
After a rather long break in the action to get through some heavy tech editing work (paid work before blogging, I always say!) it is time to start working on this presentation about In-Memory Databases. I have been trying to decide on the scope of the demo code in the back of my head, and I have added more and taken away bits and pieces over time trying to find the balance of "enough" complexity to show data integrity issues and joins, but not so much that we get lost in the process of trying to...(read more)

  • Video learning for database design

    - by donpal
I'm trying to learn good relational database design (using mysql and php if that makes any difference). I've already done some database work, so I'm not totally clueless, but I suspect that my solutions may not have adhered to best practices for efficient searching, optimization, etc. Can someone suggest a good set of videos on the topic? If you know something is superb or has really made a difference in your own learning, please post your suggestion. Prefer videos, but books (as long as they're not too huge) are ok too. But prefer videos. Thank you

  • How to design database having multiple interrelated entities

    - by Sharath Chandra
I am designing a new system which is more of a help system for core applications in banks or healthcare sector. Given the nature of the system this is not a heavy transaction oriented system but more of read intensive. Now within this application I have multiple entities which are related to each other. For e.g. Assume the following entities in the system User Training Regulations Now each of these entities have M:N Relationship with each other. Assuming the usage of a standard RDBMS, the design may involve many relationship tables each containing the relationships one other entity ("User_Training", "User_Regulations", "Training_Regulations"). This design is limiting since I have more than 3 entities in the system and maintaining the relationship graph is difficult this way. The most frequently used operation is "given an entity get me all the related entities" . I need to design the database where this operation is relatively inexpensive. What are the different recommendations for modelling this kind of database.

  • How do you put a database online?

    - by Dezrik
I have a very beginner question regarding web development. I've had some experience with JSP, Hibernate, and MAMP to create a simple system for tracking inventory and sales. But this was all done locally on one computer. This time, I want to create a system that could be accessible online. It's to help my mother track her business wherever she goes. So there would be similar aspects like tracking inventory and sales. I understand that you have to have a server in which to host all the files in. But I don't understand how you can access your database online. Or what sorts of applications or products should be used. Currently the host of my database is localhost. How do put it online such that you can still do CRUD operations? Are there any guides to do this?

  • Finding Database issue for iphone app

    - by David Liu
I know this is a dumb question and it might not be "conceptual" but, as a self-starter I really want to know how to get connected to some sort of "commercial database"? I'm recently designing my local gas station utility app for iphone and ipad. I have absolutely no clue of find a relevant database. For example, if I want to make an app for pizza ordering in the great Chicago area. How do I get info (price, menu, location, etc.) of those pizza stores scattered all over Chicago? Can any one light something for me? I appreciated your help. **If this question is not suitable here please tell me and I will delete this post. Thank you.

  • Buy or Build for web deployment?

    - by Cannonade
I have been evaluating the wide range of installation and web deployment solutions available for Windows applications. I will just clarify here (without too much detail, these tools have been covered in other questions) my understanding of the options: NSIS - Free tool that generates setup executables. Small binary. Specialized, sometimes obtuse, scripting language. Inno Setup - Free tools for setup executables. Various binary compression schemes. Pascal scripting engine. WIX - Free toolset to generate MSI binaries. XML definitions language. WIX ClickThrough - Additional tools for packaging, web download and auto update detection (now part of WIX core). InstallShield - Commercial development environment for installation packaging. Generates MSI binaries. C-like InstallScript language. Wise - Commercial development environment for installation packaging. Generates MSI binaries. ClickOnce - Visual Studio supported framework for publishing applications to a webserver, with automatic detection of updates. No support for custom installation requirements (INI files, registry etc ...). Packages setup as an MSI binary. Install Aware - Commercial development environment for installation. Generates MSI binaries. Automatic Update framwork (Web Update). If I have missed any, please let me know. And found some useful discussions of these technologies on StackOverflow: Best Simple Install System Best choice for Windows installers Alternatives to ClickOnce I have worked with a few of these solutions, as well as a handful of proprietary internal installation solutions. They are mostly concerned with packing installations and providing a framework for developers to access the run time environment. With the growing requirement for web deployment and automatic software updates, I expected to find more of a consensus among developers on a framework for web delivery of software and subsequent updates, I haven't really found that consensus. There are certainly solutions available (ClickOnce, ClickThrough, InstallShield Update Service), but they each have considerable limitations (please correct me if I mis-represent any of these). I would be interested in a framework that provided some of the following: Third party hosting/management of updates. Access to client environment (INI files, registry, etc..). User registration/activation. Feedback/Error reporting This is leaving me with the strong impression that the best way to approach the web deployment problem is through a custom built proprietary solution (possibly leveraging existing installer packaging). I have seen this sort of solution work well for a number of successful applications: FileZilla - HTTP request to update.filezilla-project.org to check for updates, downloads an NSIS binary (I think) and then shuts down to run the install.

  • Storing Templates and Object-Oriented vs Relational Databases

    - by syrion
I'm designing some custom blog software, and have run into a conundrum regarding database design. The software requires that there be multiple content types, each of which will require different entry forms and presentation templates. My initial instinct is to create these content types as objects, then serialize them and store them in the database as JSON or YAML, with the entry forms and templates as simple strings attached to the "contentTypes" table. This seems cumbersome, however. Are there established best practices for dealing with this design? Is this a use case where I should consider an object database? If I should be using an object database, which should I consider? I am currently working in Python and would prefer a capable Python library, but can move to Java if need be.

  • Where is the visual studio 2010 setup and deployment project template

    - by Tom Brown
In VS 2008, when I create a project I can add a setup project easily. File-Add-New Project... then in Project types: select Other Project Types-Setup and Deployment - and there are a whole load of installed templates - including Setup Project to create an MSI installer. But in VS 2010 - there are no templates in the Setup and Deployment - I'm using the Pro edition, not Express or beta: Is this the same for you - or do I have a duff installation of VS 2010? Otherwise how do I create an MSI installer for my projects?
