  • Handling site not found and page not found with dynamic mass virtual hosting

    I have recently setup mass virtual hosting in Apache so that all we need to do is create a directory to create a new vhost. We're then also using wildcard DNS to map all subdomains to the server running our Apache instance. This works excellently, however I'm now having trouble configuring it to fail-over to an appropriate default/error-page when the vhost directory does not exist. The problem appears to be conflated between by my desire to handle the two error conditions: vhost not found i.e. there was no directory found matching the host supplied in the HTTP host header. I'd like this to display an appropriate site not found error page. The 404 page not found condition of the vhost. Additionally I have a specialised "api" vhost in its own vhost block. I've tried a number of variations and none seem to exhibit the behaviour I want. Here's what I'm working with right now: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/site-not-found ServerName sitenotfound.mydomain.org ErrorDocument 500 /500.html ErrorDocument 404 /500.html </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName api.mydomain.org DocumentRoot /var/www/vhosts/api.mydomain.org/current # other directives, e.g. setting up passenger/rails etc... </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> # get the server name from the Host: header UseCanonicalName Off VirtualDocumentRoot /var/www/vhosts/%0/current # other directives ... e.g proxy passing to api etc... ErrorDocument 404 /404.html </VirtualHost> My understanding is that the first vhost block is used as the default, so I have this here as my catch all site. Next I have my API vhost, and then finally my mass vhost block. So for a domain that doesn't match the first two ServerName's and has no corresponding directory in /var/www/vhosts/ I'd expect it to fall-over to the first vhost, however with this setup, all domains resolve to my default site-not-found. Why is this? By putting the mass-vhost block first, I can get the mass-vhosts to resolve properly, but not my site-not-found vhost... and in this case I can't seem to find a way to distinguish between a page-level 404 in the vhost, and the case where the VirtualDocumentRoot fails to find a vhost directory (this appears to use the 404 also). Any help out of this bind is much appreciated!

  • ANY way to consolidate this code?

    I am building a PHP registration form which takes the following fields for up to 20 athletes: First Name Middle Initial Last Name Federation Number Address City State Zip DOB SSN Phone Email I am only through 7 of the fields for each fighter and my php file is very large (over 40kb). Is there ANY way to consolidate this code at all? I am also having to validate the information on each field (as I said - 20 athletes x 12 fields = 240 validations on a single page). There is a number commercial tools provided by SAS, Oracle, Microsoft, etc., that allow to de-duplicate or merging names of individuals or companies coming from multiple sources. However, after reading the answers to the question mentioned before, I wondered why a seemingly interesting problem didn't receive any answers mentioning open source projects that could tackle the problem. Are you aware of any open source projects or algorithms to implement the so called "record linking", "record merging", or "clustering"?

  • Remote Desktop failed logon event 4625 not logging correctly on 2008 Terminal Services server

    When I use the new remote desktop with ssl and try to log on with bad credentials it logs a 4625 event as expected. The problem is, it doesn't log the ip address, so I can't block malicious logons in our firewall.     I spent another day tearing my hair out yesterday trying to resolve an issue with SSIS packages runnning in SQLAgent (not got much left at the moment, maybe I should contact the SSIS team for a wig). My situation was that I am deploying packages to a development server, and to provide isolation I was running jobs with a proxy account that only had access to the development servers. Proxies are an awesome feature and mean that you should never have to "just run the job as sysadmin". The issue I was facing was that the job step was failing. The job step was a simple execution of the package.The following errors appeared in my log file. I always check the "Log step output in history" for a job step, this ensures you get all the output from the command that you run. I'll blog about this later. If looking at the output in sysdtslog90 then you will have an entry with datacode -1073573533 and error message File or directory "<filename>" represented by connection "<connection>" does not exist.  Not exactly helpful. If you get the output from the console then you will also get these errors. 0xC0202070 "The file name property is not valid. The file name is a device or contains invalid characters." 0xC001401E "specified in the connection was not valid." It appears this error is due to the use of a UNC path and the account runnnig the package not having access to all the folders in the path. Solution To solve this you need to ensure that the proxy account has access to ALL folders in the path you are accessing. To check this works, logon as the relevant proxy user, or run a command window as the specified user. Then try and do net use \\server\share and then do a dir for each folder in the path and check you have access. If these work and you still have the problem then you have some other problem, sorry.   • Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

    I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. See logs below, I may be missing something, also how is it possible to log on the bootstrap vm. Could I manual deploy, if so what do I need to do.     When you’re sharing stuff back and forth between your computers, the names of those computers actually start to matter — in my case, I upgraded to a new MacBook Air because my old one has a dead screen and is out of warranty, so I made it into a desktop with an external monitor. That’s when I got an error that my two Macs had the same name. Oops! Luckily it’s an extremely easy fix. Just open up System Preferences, go to Sharing, and change the computer name. Done! You can also change it from the Terminal using this command, though obviously it’s much simpler to just change it under Sharing.

    Writing a recent piece on the pains of index fragmentation, I found myself wondering why, in SQL Server, you can’t set the equivalent of a fill factor, on a heap table. I scratched my head…who might know? Phil Factor, of course! I approached him with a due sense of optimism only to find that not only did he not know, he also didn’t seem to care much either. I skulked off thinking how this may be the final nail in the coffin of nominative determinism. I’ve always wondered if there was anything in it, though. If your surname is Plumb or Leeks, is there even a tiny, extra percentage chance that you’ll end up fitting bathrooms? Some examples are quite common. I’m sure we’ve all met teachers called English or French, or lawyers called Judge or Laws. I’ve also known a Doctor called Coffin, a Urologist called Waterfall, and a Dentist called Dentith. Two personal favorites are Wolfgang Wolf who ended up managing the German Soccer team, Wolfsburg, and Edmund Akenhead, a Crossword Editor for The Times newspaper. Having forgiven Phil his earlier offhandedness, I asked him for if he knew of any notable examples. He had met the famous Dr. Batty and Dr. Nutter, both Psychiatrists, knew undertakers called Death and Stiff, had read a book by Frederick Page-Turner, and suppressed a giggle at the idea of a feminist called Gurley-Brown. He even managed to better my Urologist example, citing the article on incontinence in the British Journal of Urology (vol.49, pp.173-176, 1977) by A. J. Splatt and D. Weedon. What, however, if you were keen to gently nudge your child down the path to a career in IT? What name would you choose? Subtlety probably doesn’t really work, although in a recent interview, Rodney Landrum did congratulate PowerShell MVP Max Trinidad on being named after a SQL function. Grant “The Memory” Fritchey (OK, I made up that nickname) doesn’t do badly either. Some surnames, seem to offer a natural head start, although I know of no members of the Page-Reid clan in the profession. There are certainly families with the Table surname, although sadly, Little Bobby Tables was merely a legend by xkcd. A member of the well-known Key family would need to name their son Primary, or maybe live abroad, to make their mark. Nominate your examples of people seemingly destined, by name, for their chosen profession (extra points for IT). The best three will receive a prize. Cheers, Tony.

    I have trouble naming the COUNT() column from SQL queries and will swap between various variants _Count [Count] (sql, or "count" or backticks for MySQL etc) C Cnt CountSomething (where "something" is the field being counted, or "CountAll") NoOfRows RowCount etc Has anyone come up with any name that you are happy with and always use without hesitation? This is bothering me because after joining SO just recently, my answers have shown this tendency of flip-flopping with no consistency. I need to get this sorted. Please help. (While we're at it, what do you use for SUM etc?)   • Default User Id at Login different from User Name in Terminal Shell

    During the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installation, I was prompted to enter a user name and password, so that a corresponding account could be created and set up for login. I replaced the one that was provided by default (i.e. '70319', which is the Windows 7 admin id) with a user name/id of my choosing. Now, when I turn on the computer, and choose to enter the Ubuntu operating system, the login id that is displayed is 70319 - that is, the one provided by Windows 7. However, when I open up a Unix/Terminal shell, the user id that is displayed at the prompt is the one I entered during installation. Otherwise, the installation of Ubuntu was a success! Is there some way of changing the user id that is displayed at the Login screen, so that it is consistent with the one I entered during installation? If it's any help, I installed Ubuntu using wubi on an ASUS Eee PC 1011PX running Windows 7, and ASUS Express Gate Cloud. EDIT: I tried researching it in the FAQ and documentation, as well as doing Google searches such as "closure compiler name". I couldn't find anything definite, hence the reason I am asking. I don't think I will get a profoundly helpful answer but I was hoping that I could at least satisfy my curiosity. I am not trying to solve a specific problem. I am just curious.

    I am looking at getting a VPS with RackSRV, and they don't sell domain names, but are happy to set it up after I get one elsewhere. Can anyone recommend somewhere I can purchase just the domain, and not have any hassles moving it afterwards? (Or can I just purchase the domain and make it point at the RackSRV ip address, while still using the domain sellers' control panel? I don't really understand that part of it enough! :)) I want the domain name registered in my name, ideally with myself as the technical and administrative contacts for simple transfers.

And hitting tab twice does not show me anything either. What I am missing here?

  • My Herokuapp is inaccessible from custom domain name

    I have a Heroku app that is located at myapp.herokuapp.com. I have mapped a domain name to this app, using the A properties. I followed the instructions on Heroku's website to the letter, and it worked for a few days. Now when I try to access the site from the custom domain, it's timing out! On Chrome, I am getting "Oops! Google Chrome could not find that page!" message. I tried pinging the name as well, but I got this error: ping: cannot resolve yourhostname.org: Unknown host The app itself is working and I don't see any error messages from Heroku. Or from new Relic. What's going on here? Also tried running host and this was the error message: ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
